The Magpie Inn in Mid Suffolk

Good Sunday lunch, but rather noisy when quite full.

We heard about the Magpie and went on Sunday 29th September for the roast dinner for my birthday. On arriving we went to the bar not sure if they were short of staff but the person behind the bar seemed harassed we were told that our table wasn't ready as the people were just finishing their desserts and could we wait? we were given tickets as you have a choice of different size meals but not explained what they meant! we were not told where to wait so we stood in the middle of the bar in the way. We then were told that they had another table for us which we went to also they mentioned that we only had a one hour slot which is not good as you have to queue for your meal and then have a dessert after isn't very long. the food was great which I cannot fault. It just was a shame that irt was all rushed. After our meal we went to another pub for another drink as no room in the Magpie.

Super friendly and nice 'ploughman' Ate

Barmaid very friendly and polite. Food not so good. Chips tasted like deep fried crinkle cut frozen chips, not home made, beans were a cheap make with no taste, ham tasted like thick cut tinned ham and the egg white was so over cooked and crispy. Meal was very basic and expensive for what it was. Didn’t know the area and chose this pub as they seem to have a lot of choice on the online menu.

I haven't actually been inside but I phoned to ask if they were playing football on a screen, they weren't but the person who answered the phone was friendly, professional and couldn't try to help me enough! Much appreciated 🥰

Utterly fantastic food ,best carvery I've had for years .Staff very helpful ....doing the best they can in cramped conditions ...Table booked at 1.30 finally got seated at 2 20 ran out of time for afters (car park closes early on Sundays ) Shame for us and them as they lost the sale of 13 afters ! Feel sorry for the staff ...as I always try and give a fair review .It was utter chaos entering people everywhere juggling for seats .We expected it to be busy as it was Mother's Day .....but this was another level .The first course we had was fantastic ! Well done Chef and serving staff !

Another lovely carvery at The Magpie today. Portion sizes are spot on and they’re always very accommodating with our one year old. My only criticism is that they only serve Jack Rabbit wine which whilst is cheap, could also strip the paint off the walls!

I would never go to ever again I find unfriendly people and the landlady is the one that split me and my love up from the landlady behaviour… me and my ex now was kissing and cuddling and snuggling up together when my ex was told off for us being to romantic in public and in the pub .. disgraceful behaviour by the landlady and I don’t recommend going here at all I spent over 50pounds for one night only to have a very upsetting evening by the landlady .. I no longer have photos of this pub ..

Excellent carvery best in the area! Friendly service and reasonably priced for the amount you get. Would recommend. If the interior decor was given a little refresh I think this place could be even more desirable.

Excellent food and excellent value for money. Six of us went for Sunday lunch today and we could not fault it. Lots of meat, very well cooked and a huge choice of veg. Very laid back atmosphere with great staff who made you feel very much at home. Highly recommended.

Lovely carvery but only serving carvery! no starters but there was a desert menu. Pub is friendly and clean. Dated decor, conference tables and chairs, but get over that and you get a good meal at a very reasonable cost. Will definitely go back.

Old fashioned pub with great music and a great atmosphere on a Wednesday lunchtime 🎵🎉😀 only gripe was burnt garlic bread for £4.50 - for 3 pieces; not great. If I; as the owner/barman had been taking out that garlic bread I would NOT have served it, but huge portions for the mains. I didn’t want to say anything as my mum gets embarrassed. (Sorry also my mum tipped £5 - there was barely a thank you) never mind…

Doesn't look much from the outside. But, like an oyster, once opened the inside is pretty good. Food is tasty 😊

We have been to this little gem 5 times now for Sunday Carvery and can only score it 5* To start with such a lovely pub with interesting artefact on the wall’s to read and over 100 Gins to try as well as great friendly staff. The food is amazing and with the cost of living the prices are great to match it. Stunning melt in your mouth Beef, my wife had Gammon and Beef, I tried some of the gammon and wow, didn’t have the Turkey this time however it looked delicious. So much veg, crispy roast potatoes as well as stunning hot gravy. There is a reason this place is booked up every week, we ate at 1:15 it’s now 4pm and I’m still stuffed….

Proper pub. Good carvery and nice dessert selection. The staff are really helpful and friendly.

Great pub, especially for the working man/woman and community. Lively atmosphere. Good food that is well known in the area. Would recommend for a Sunday lunch or theam night. Nice beers also.

Great roast dinner as always at a goid price

I've lived in the area for 25 years and have never been in the Magpie before. The beer was excellent, the staff were great and the food was excellent. We had two platters, there was lots of it and it was cooked to perfection. I will be going again.

Surprisingly very good carvery. The food seems a better quality than the big chains, the staff are great too and great prices. It is a bit tricky filling your plate up in 1 room then navigating a short corridor and through a busy pub to your table but i guess its similar to a main chain as you do it there. I enjoyed my meal and we had plenty of empty plates afterwards, with nothing wasted.

I was suprised how good this place was we saw it on google maps and called them for a table and said we have a small dog as we're on holiday and they said no problems you can eat outside and as it was nice and warm today it wasn't a problem parking was hard as it was quiet busy but parked locally and wandered in all staff so friendly and food was top draw, we both had the Sunday carvery and a drink each for £30:30 so pretty reasonable tbf. I Would recomend ths venue ❤️

Great meal well cooked and plenty of it. Good value for money. Staff were brilliant and helpful. There was 14 of us and we had the backroom to ourselves made a lovely start to our christmas.

On a visit from Ireland my daughter brought us here. There were 7 adults and two children and everyone enjoyed the carvery and desserts. The staff were very friendly and the portions and quality of food were excellent. Would definitely recommend.

So impressed with this place. Food was amazing! Had a carvery which was big and really enjoyable. Staff were exceptional so friendly and inviting and brilliant with the children. They were well decorated for Halloween which the kids loved!!!

Well what can I say ordered the toma hawk steak It was amazing butterflied and cooked to perfection Sides of fries and onion rings mushrooms offered salad but refused it as more than plenty on the plate Had a bottle of red wine that just made it An amazing meal Bar staff good and friendly What more can you ask for

Ah yes,, the magpie.... its now a gin bar ( sigh ) .... its always been a nice looking place though...friendly staff. If pretentious nights out are your thing,, this is the place for you . I was once regular here for around 20 years. Update: July 18 - ( please note that my review was based on multiple visits to this establishment when it first reopened advertised as a gin bar, and the reaction from people who enjoy having their ego stroked, helped with the description of my review at the time . However,, for obvious reasons this is subject to change and quite often is ). Apon a re visit, I can confirm that the food ( as it always was, being in the good food guide with previous owners ) is a very good standard with a very good price point , which was something I had not previously reviewed here. The staff are very friendly and very helpful, and again the building Is beautiful and listed in places. Irrespective of my review which is mearly my humble opinion at the time, I do always encourage anyone to discover their own experiences with any establishment reviewed. The experience will always be different if alcohol is consumed, and my review does not include that. My opinion is exactly that and doesn't necessarily reflect the true dynamic of any place in its entirety, but only for the experience at the time. As a non drinker, the magpie along with many other pubs offers a pleasant dining experience regardless of the inclusion of alcohol.

Great food, but beware that the prices aren’t the same as online.. says 9£ for roast but paid 9.95£ Each. Not sure how I got charged 19.90£ for two roasts🤷🏼‍♀️

I looked on Google for Sunday roast near me, the Magpie Combs Ford came up, we went into pub got a nice welcome from owner/staff and some locals, nice selection of beers, ales, cider on tap, roasts come in small, medium and large, one local joked have the large then you won't need to eat til Tuesday. We opted for medium, generous amount of meat with choice of beef, pork, gammon between us we had all 3, they were tasty and tender, then you have roast parsnips, roast potatoes, stuffing, then you have around 10 vegs to choose from, the cauliflower/brocoli cheese - the sauce was so good, all vegs cooked just perfect, then sauces and the gravy mmmm was so tasty and thicker as we all like it. The desserts list is also great, we had Belgium waffle and jam roly poly see are photos, the custard was so creamy. We booked ahead would definitely recommend this. Thank you all at the Magpie, my only regret is that I am not a local because this would definitely become my local pub if I did. Will be back though worth the journey.

Came to Stowmarket for the weekend, just me and my partner, we had booked for the steak night on the Saturday, but decided to go Friday night to see where it was, decided to eat there too, just loved it, so back again we went Saturday and also for the Carvery on Sunday! We had a great time, we were made to feel like locals, so welcoming! Would totally recommend 😍

4 of us went for a meal and it was lovely. My only complaint would be they don't cater for diabetics.

WOW what a gem, booked a Sunday roast here and what a lovely surprise, the meat was tender with three choices, plenty of veg options AND a chef that knows how to cook roast potatoes, not many places do now. Keep up what you are doing, we will certainly be back

A group of us had the Surf n Turf Saturday special last week and can only say Wow. All if us agrreed the steaks were probably the best we have ever had. The T Bone was so big that the side dishes had to come separately. The sirloin were juicy and tender and cooked to perfection. The dishes were so big it was a great we got a free drink to help it down.An absolute bargain. We will be back soon.

Visited yesterday for lunch with a friend, great menu and food was lovely. Quiet when we arrived at 12 but soon got very busy. Very popular place and we will definitely be back although will book next time as no idea it would be so busy.

A very busy pub, especially on a Sunday lunch, A Carvery is on offer as well as main menu. Good food, good staff. We have visited the Magpie quite a few times. Sunday Booking is a must.

Lovely food and service as always

Rather than review the food like most folk , I thought I would review the ale and atmosphere, both are excellent, best pint of doom bar outside of Cornwall, sports bar is great for a session , one of the best times to visit is when Big Kevs on the sauce ( don't sit in his chair tho) it's a laugh a minute . Proper pub with proper folk

We had our wedding meal here. There was 20 adults and 3 children. The food was delicious, all our meals came out within minutes of each other and everything was eaten. We would definitely recommend visiting this welcoming pub.

This pub is marvellous. It has a delicious Sunday carvery and a really lovely team working with the landlords Jen and Malcolm. It’s a real local with a great community atmosphere. It also has a spectacular selection of gins (well over 150) which are available from the bar. Please go and visit, enjoy the gins and food: not just on a Sunday it is great any day of the week(!) and enjoy a proper British pub!

Popped in after a weekend break, the first but not the last time ,beef cooked perfectly, plenty of it ,better than alot more expensive places we have been, and very friendly welcoming, could not fault it, definitely be back x

We have been at the Magpie before when we visited Suffolk at the farm, and today the carvery was very tasty and well cooked. Well done 👏to the chef.

We had a large family gathering. Great selection on the menu, good variety, some of the Asian dishes were on the spicy side (of course). The staff were friendly, the owners happy to help.

Been meaning to review for a while as the meal my partner and I had here has been etched into my mind for all the wrong reasons. I had a veggie lasagne and (I am no fussy eater) it was very challenging to eat indeed. Veg slop, very bland and veg tasted frozen. Partner had gammon and chips, gammon was fried like bacon and so tough it genuinely made his jaw ache. Dog seemed happy with it though. Staff nice enough.

What a lovely pub this is. Staff treat you as if they have know you all their lives. .Service first class very good choice of menu reasonably priced. Sunday carvery best l have ever had, knocks spots of the chain carveries. Very clean inside and out and full of character.

Firstly, kudos on this place for their menu that includes vegetarian, vegan & gluten free options that were clearly marked. Unfortunately not much else positive to say.When I ordered they came back 15mins later saying they didn't have the fake chicken to make the meal so would I like it with fresh veg instead - which was the same price but ultimately fine, whatever. Unfortunately I didn't realise veg meant raw mushrooms and a handful of peas and carrots - an interesting selection for a sweet and sour and sadly not to my taste. They then came and asked if I would like egg fried rice. I had asked for a vegan meal so a bit confused about this question. They had a selection of beers, most of which they didn't actually stock.My partner ordered "salt and pepper chips" from the menu opposed to his regular chips and literally got chips with salt and pepper on... for an additional £2.50. £30 odd quid for two meals and two beers, none of which was tasty, to say the least.Rounding this up with a mention of the very outdated decor, drunk customers falling over and screaming children. Probably would avoid this place in future.

I and my beautiful lady three yrs ago nearly went to this pub we had a lovely time and things was going well for us in the evening I spent 65 plus pounds on drinks to my other half then Mandy and myself but then the night gone from a nice one to bad one landlady had a go at my partner Mandy about us kissing and cuddling up together as we was so so loved up together landlady said to cut out the kissing as it was upsetting customers thought what the hell got to do with you lot we in here as a couple to have lovely evening here we was getting moaned at by landlady for being to romantic together....I emailed the pub few weeks ago about they cost our relationship and I am disgusted with there behaviour towards us as a couple ....... I never go to this pub again ever ......I hate them pure and simple hate them for what they done .....
