This is a small pub with a lovely size garden area. We went on a Sunday for the carvery, the service was perfect, and I'm amazed that it wasn't that busy, the food was the best I have had in many years, meat was cooked to perfection, proper crispy roasties with a light fluffy centre, and the veg was a delight. I whole heartily recommend, and myself and the rest if my family will definitely come here again.

I was conducting a few business meetings recently in the St Ive area, and decided that me and my business colleagues needed a place to grab a spot of lunch as we were getting quite hungry after all of our meetings - classic British food would be just the ticket, we thought. All of my colleagues are big fans of traditional english cuisines, and so we decided that a classic english style pub would be the best option, as we were sure we would be able to grab a slice of that english cuisine flavour we were really after. This looked like just the place. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a large dog - and look, I've seen the odd review here and there that are quite frankly slandering the character of this great hound. I can assure you that these are all untrue. The Large (beautiful) dog stood to attention instantly upon arrival, and was clearly extremely happy to see me and my business colleagues, which made us feel very welcome indeed. Within no time he was thrusting forth menus into each of our open hands as he seated us at a table adjacent the bar, which was beautifully polished and set with the finest of silverware. The menu was laden with choice of a bountiful selection of classic English flavours, everything from chips to pie and mash, and gammon slice. I personally went for the batter cod, as I like a taste of the English seaside myself - whilst all of my business colleagues decided on a classic bowl of chips and lasagne. What a fantastic choice - I must admit! In no time, the lovely hound returned with our fresh, hot and delicious meals. Fantastic. What can I say, a successful business meal through and through. Not a single crumb was left on our plates, and not a single stone of business was left unturned. We came up with some great business plans at that table - thoroughly fantastic. A true turning point, if I don't say so myself. As I finished my final chip, I saw a flash of white out of the corner of my eye - a lovely white cat exiting the kitchen. Now, at first sight a lot of clientele would assume this is just a rogue feline that has found its way into the kitchen area of the restaurant - but no no, you see, I am no ordinary clientele. I recognise talent when I see it. This was no ordinary cat - this was a culinary mastermind. Whilst we could not communicate in any form of verbal linguistics, I mentally thanked the chef for the fantastic meal he had just bestowed upon us. I could tell he worked very hard to the bone on that one.. Gorgeous, I must say. Just all in all, a solid meal - a must for all business conglomerates and associates, and their business parters. Great for decision making, and fostering connections over a bite to eat. I would throughly recommend, and would come again. Thank You

Popped in on the off chance and really regretted not just driving by. Someone, the landlord I guess, and another were burning creosote treated wood at the top end of the carpark filling it with a noxious fug. This was the highlight of the visit. Inside we were greeted by a scrum of kids and a slough of abandoned toys , which is fine if you like that sort of thing... The three bar staff, who clearly wanted not to be in this proto nursery for abandoned sprogs, eventually figured out how to serve up a pint and a glass of wine. We decided that it was preferable to sit out in the dystopian patio and gaze out across the scattered, listless assortment of neglected and sorrowful benches populated by no one other than a poor mange afflicted doggo and an equally unhealthy mog. I mean, yeah, sure, it was an experience. Ghastly.

We enjoyed our Saturday family lunchtime meal for the 8 of us. This traditional pub dates back nearly 400 years and is run by Karen, Kirsty & Sophie. We were made most welcome and seated in the restaurant side of the pub, which boasted a log burner with the doors open. We shared feeding the logs into the fire with granddaughter, Sophie. The main bar side, also with an open fire, had a village locals feel to it and offered draft Guinness, Peaky Blinder real ale and Somersby cider, along with lagers. There is a large garden area, with picnic tables and a smokers' compound to one side. I was told by Kirsty there is an annual beer festival held each July. Our meals, which were much enjoyed by all of us, were chosen from a wide-ranging menu that included starters and specials. For those who appreciate a traditional English pub which has not been 'modernised' or 'extensively upgraded', I wouls recommend The Mad Cat for either lunch, evening meal or simple dropping by for a drink.

We went for the advertised Friday pizza/fish and chips, but this wasn't available so we chose from the usual menu. The food was quite nice, but it felt like we were eating in someone's front room. The decor is tired and tatty and there's personal clutter everywhere. This could be such a nice pub if it was given a tidy-up. And lose the dated grubby tablecloths and place mats!

Called in for lunch, the place is quite outdated & not very clean. A vacuum cleaner had been left in the dining room still plugged in with the cable stretched across the floor, there were a couple of chips under another table & quite a few cobwebs. There was a large dog in the dining room which didn't bother us but then a cat came from the kitchen & got on a chair at our table again it didn't unduly bother us until he walked across our table & we had to lift him off. We were the only people in the pub & had ordered food on arrival , after 45 minutes we asked where it was & were told it was taking a while as they were trying to find things! It finally arrived after waiting almost 1 hour , ridiculous given that we were the only customers there, the young man & woman serving were very pleasant but it seemed that they were on their own & trying to do everything. Won't be returning

An Indoors BBQ for 20 people like no other was held during Storm Antoni where the innovation, patience, skill and professionalism of Darren, Kirsty & Mum Karen were tested to the max. Only popped in for a drink, so can't comment on the food, but I know they get great reviews for that. Bar staff were friendly and welcoming, and service was good. I've marked it down because the pub and garden both seemed tired and in need of a refresh, and neither offered the atmosphere to encourage us to linger. Simply mowing the grass and pruning the shrubs would make the garden instantly more inviting. Sorry

Well what can I say! We turned up on Sunday evening for a bite to eat. My wife had x2 starters & a pudding while had a starter, roast & pudding. The food was really good, no airs & graces just well presented, well cooked food. The beer was great & we were made to feel really welcome. Highlight of the night was the entertainment, which was a troupe of young ladies who presented a disney themed extravaganza!!! Unfortunately we had to leave just as the young ladies commenced the karaoke. All in all very good value for money.

Lovely roast, friendly people, clean and not terribly expensive. Generous meat portions. Only thing I might say could be improved is, the plates could be bigger. Not to be greedy but if the plates were bigger the food would look more presentable. When the plates are smaller, you pile up the food high and you end up looking greedy, when you don't need more food, just a larger plate. Other than that, brilliant.

This traditional pub is friendly - even better it's dog friendly. Their Sunday roast tasted like a proper home cooked meal, with lashings of tasty gravy. There was a constant stream of freshly cooked veg from the kitchen as plates were piled high! The roast spuds were the best - not frozen or pre-prepared! We just moved into the area and going out to the local was the best idea we had. Darren and the staff are delightful and super friendly. It will be a regular and they do takeaway roasts too! I went to the Mad Cat for a Carvery and the moment I walked through the door I regretted it. I was greeted by a large dog (very overwhelming for someone who is scared of dogs). I am unsure if it lived there or was a customers however it smelt terrible and made me not want to eat there. The food was very bland, just vegetables boiled in water, no seasoning at all. I had the beef and that was cooked lovely. Very odd they had frozen Potato Croquettes as an option. Unfortunately a lot of flies around the food, I appreciate the weather is still mild for this time of year but the food wasn’t covered. Sat eating my dinner I noticed a lot of mould and damp on the walls, the restaurant looked very sad and needs a deep clean and an update. Whilst eating my dinner I could hear the staff talking rather loud. I love staff being happy at work but it shouldn’t be them shouting across to one another. A lot of room for improvement.

The decor isnt much, but clearly being improved. The service and the food however, was SUBLIME. All food was freshly cooked and to a high standard. There was oodles of it and the menu is vast.

From the moment we walked in we were warmly welcomed. Drinks were ordered and brought straight away. The menu is great with lots of variety and there were lots of things I could have chosen. The food tasted great and the service was excellent. We had several servers. None too intrusive and all very friendly. We left and both said we will come back. It was a lovely dining experience and one I will revisit soon for definite. Good value too.

Went here today for lunch, had a lovely tender steak and chips, cooked very well, good value. Was also nice to be somewhere where the music wasn't overwhelming and could have a conversation! Hadn't been in here for years, but will definitely return soon!

They have a good menu and food is very good. You may have to be patient as they only had one person who was taking orders and serving drinks.

Update: After posting my review, the owner of the hotel asked us to leave. He was abruptly calling my husband during an important business meeting with a request that we must leave ASAP. In the meantime, when I saw the reply to my post, I phoned the hotel to ask what was going on. "Steve" introduced himself as the owner and said that I should have talked to him before posting such reviews. He mentioned that he hadn't thrown our stuff on the street, only because we were staying with our baby. When I called my husband, he said we are going to leave as requested. This place wasn’t worth that kind of stress. We left to stay at “The George” instead. Shame we didn’t stay there from the beginning, as this hotel was amazing. No REFUND was provided though. Lovely place and tasty evening meals, but we are disappointed and I would NOT recommend staying here as we were denied from a request to have breakfasts as “other guests didn’t ask for that”. No hairdryer in the whole building, total joke!
