Oh the lunchtime disaster that is The City of London. Over the years I’ve watched in horror as EC1 has been almost completely taken over by the likes of Pret a Manger, Eat, Itsu etc. Thankfully there’s still a smattering of independent establishments with character providing (relatively) freshly prepared food. Of course not all such places can be relied upon for quality but ‘The M Bar’ is the best combination for relaxing independent and just about affordable lunchtime food and drink that I’ve found – I’ve been frequenting this place for nigh on a decade. It’s like one of those old-fashioned Soho Italian eateries that has instead found its way to Leadenhall Market. There’s quite a wide-ranging Italian-British menu here, something for everyone but I normally stick to a Panini and black coffee. Admittedly the quality of food and drink here isn’t exactly going to win them any awards and the quality of the bread is variable but for most budget conscious office workers it should be easily good enough. The real attraction here is both the indoor and outdoor eating areas. Outside is obviously preferable in summer and is covered so you can stay out of the sun and rain. Inside upstairs is a lovely wood panelled mezzanine with comfy seating – the sort of place that you can retreat to at lunchtime when you want to hide away from the world and come out feeling somewhat restored and ready to face up to the afternoon. This place also attracts an interesting mix of people with some real characters – insurance market office workers, tourists and working-class types. Unfortunately prices do keep increasing – I suspect that the landlord The City of London borough council is to blame for that but you’ll still be hard pressed to find a non-chain alternative in the local area.

This is the best, old school Italian snack bar/coffee shop, with traditional Italian values! The service is exceptional, making you feel welcome and at home. The choice of food is extensive, and everything is so tasty and cooked to perfection! ( I particularly like the home made chicken escalopes). Forget the chains!!! Go independant and visit this beautiful snack bar, you won’t be disappointed!

I popped in this morning for breakfast. I said Good morning to the first person. The man just ignored me! I then said Good morning to the lady She just replied with "what would you like" The experience really annoyed me - where are their manners!? I did ring to speak to the manager. He said maybe they were busy or under pressure.. it was 8:40am and there wasn't many customers! God knows how they cope at lunchtime!

The M Bar is a shining example of the sort of high quality, unpretentious cafe restaurant that Italians just seem to do to perfection. Located in Leadenhall Market near the City of London, it's popular with local City workers, tourists and visitors alike. The food is very obviously freshly homemade - all the flavours are fresh and vibrant. M Bar offers a good range of filled rolls and sandwiches, salads and pasta dishes. Its business indicates its popularity and rightly so...this is everyday Italian food at its best.

This is my all-time favourite lunch spot in the heart of the city. The friendliest staff, the freshest and most delicious focaccia / paninis with delicious filling mixes and fresh pastas made every day. About £5-7 but so worth it. They have a loyalty card system too!

I'm a regular for lunch and breakfast at the M bar. I love having home cooked quality food on my doorstep instead of the usual expensive pre packaged food full of preservatives. This place is a little gem offering different options daily including high quality sandwiches, hot food options like pasta and lasagne and a different home made soup everyday. They also sell the best coffee in the market! Staff are friendly and welcoming. Nothing is too much trouble and they are happy to cater for special requests. Worth seeking out if you are in the city rather than relying on the usual chains.

Returned to what I remember as Marina's when I worked close to Leadenhall Market a decade ago for lunch on a snowy Monday after a business meeting. Immediately felt welcome in this family run café. Custom-made focacias and other Italian breads; simple hot dishes; good coffee. Outside tables under the market roof for alfresco eating. Recommended over any chain cafés.

Stopped in for a coffee before having drinks across the walkway with friends. Upon opening the door, the owner was shouting down the phone, the F-Bomb every other word!!! As I walked along the narrow path along the deli counter, having said "Wow!" to the welcome I received, he was walking along on the other side of the counter, continuing to shout profanities down the phone. Thank goodness the lovely woman behind the counter summoned me away from him. The coffee was just OK. The food looks good, but I didn't eat any. I hope the owner doesn't make a habit of welcoming patrons with strings of expletives!!

When I am staying in the City or nearby I always leave the hotel for breakfast. In The M Bar you just order what you want and also in the amount you want; 2 or 3 eggs, 3 or 4 slices of bacon etc. All is made fresh and the coffee is great. Also great for a breakfast meeting and other business talk.

A friend of mine took me to the Mbar for lunch and I was very surprised how much choice they have. You have a cold bad (salads, etc.), a sandwich bar and a hot counter (pasta, chicken, etc.). They have seating outside and upstairs, which are comfortable not in the middle of the crowd. I had the tortellini pasta and my friend the chicken with vegetables. both very well cooked and a good portion for a lunch and worth the price.Definitely worth a go when you're in the area.

A very unexpected find - situated just at the edge of Leadnehall market (behind the back of Marks and Spencer on Gracechurch, if you're trying to find it), a colleague suggested it as a place for a breakfast meet. I loved it! Reminds me of a traditional Italian Cafe from the 60's that are still to be found dotted throughout the UK - unpretentious, unexpensive. We sat upsatirs inside, but there's plenty of covered seating outside in the lovely Leadenhall Market with heaters to keep you warm. Nice! Polite, friendly staff too.Bacon sandwich and a great latte for less than £5 in the heart of the City? Perfect!
