I am writing this review, sat in bed, listening to the waves crashing into the harbour. What a magical spot and a lovely hotel. We are staying in the Lookout, very quaint, a few steps away from the main building. Smallish but very comfortable room, well equipped. The staff here are delightful and very helpful. All managing well and sensibly with the COVID-19 restrictions. The food is delicious. Menu delivered to your door in the morning so you have plenty of time to make your choices, difficult, as it is all so good. Our little dog is extremely happy!Such a shame everything is closing down again but this will be our first port of call when new restrictions are lifted.

Two nights this time after two previous visits. This time everything was disappointing.General appearance was tired, thread bare stair carpet, missing window latch on window that would not close.Various fitments missing in public areas. Rooms advertised with village view looked out on a blank wall. The very high standard of food experienced in the past did not meet expectations. Management made no attempt at service recovery.

We stayed in Middle Cottage - lovely views or the harbour and out to sea. We loved the terrace and the cottage was really comfortable. Lounge and kitchen downstairs. No mobile phone reception but the WiFi reliable. Kitchen has microwave, hob, oven and dishwasher - but no crockery or cutlery - maybe due to Covid-19? Great bed and lovely bathroom. We would definitely go back. The hotel was following Covid-19 guidelines to the letter which suited us fine.

We had booked an evening meal at the restaurant. We were told to go and fetch a face mask to be able to walk through the restaurant to get to our table. The food was excellent. We were asked to order desert at the same time as other food ‘to minimise trips to the table’. Of all the interpretations of coronavirus rules, this was the strictest and most unfriendly ☹️.

Was really looking forward to a 2 night anniversary stay at this highly rated hotel. What a disappointment Room was small, boiling hot with no air conditioning and the water treatment plant right outside the window meant a very noisy, or boiling night. The evening meal felt like a rush with 3, expensive courses served and collected in under a hour. No other option available to eat, without driving and the effort involved in parking in the ridiculously small and tight car park put us off the first night. But we did make the effort the second night. At nearly £300 per night it certainly isn't value for money. The staff were friendly but poorly trained. I asked for warm toast with my breakfast but that was too difficult. Toast, on both mornings was delivered as soon as we sat down and the breakfast sometime later. Such a disappointment.

Lovely position for a costal paths and surrounding area. Unfortunately service is poor on occasion ( although sone staff were lovely ) We were told no lunch to return to the hotel over run with non residents eating lunch . We felt like the poor relative after most of Cornwall is residents only we were stuck with nothing . Dinner also gone down hill no atmosphere and courses coming far to quickly in the attempt to move you through . Rooms small but ok only serviced on arrival due to covid . In summary lovely little port but hotel gave us no reason to return .

There was even a hot water bottle and hot chocolate left outside the room in the evening. The breakfast was amazing and I had Eggs Benedict, I’m no Masterchef judge but I can only describe the ones I had as the best ever!!! Most recommended to try. Spent a long weekend at this delightful hidden Inn in the fishing village of Portloe Cornwall. We reserved a room with a sea view, looking out into the narrow harbour. The large room was equipped with a six foot bed, adequate storage and good WiFi. The restaurant was excellent although the tables a little small. The menus gave a great variety of local seafood and meat. Beautifully presented and of excellent quality and proportions. Service impeccable and attentive, maybe a little too spontaneous with course delivery. Lovely touches in the room . Hot water bottle placed in the bed at night, chocolate and marshmallows nightcap. Afternoons with cake and biscuits. Pillow sleep sprays. Breakfasts sumptuous and extensive . The kippers one of the best. Some good walks along he coastal paths. Easy access to St Mawes by car and by Ferry ( worth booking on line for reduction and any time use) to Falmouth. King Harry Ferry also from this peninsula ( return car ferry £8. ) to Trellisic National Trust garden and gallery.

Possibly the nicest hotel I have ever stayed in. If you want something different, away from the corporate hotels with fresh air, a sea view and the very best hospitality then this is the place to go. Nestled in the small quaint harbour of Portloe this hotel offers stunning views from the restaurant and food that does not disappoint. From the reception to lounge area with open log fire and sofa’s it really is the most relaxing place. We spent 3 nights here and had the best sleep ever in our super king bed. Listening to the waves from our window was simply stunning and hypnotic and something you will cherish forever. All of the staff are so friendly and welcoming and the manager (Anne) is a delight. You may pay a little extra and there is no pool, sauna or jacuzzi but the scenery, service and little touches of elegance (including a hot water bottle delivered to your room) more than make up for this. We will be back for sure one day. Our thanks to the team for making this a truly memorable holiday.

A beautiful hotel nestled in a secluded bay right on the edge of the sea, such a tranquil place. We stayed for one night in a sea view room, which was in a little Annex across from the main hotel, which was no problem at all, it added to the seclusion. Our room was exceptionally clean, light and airy, a lovely touch was the homemade cookies left by the tea & coffee, with fresh milk in the fridge. We were met with a very warm and friendly welcome, with a brief but informative overview of the hotel. we ate in the beautiful relaxed restaurant which overlooks the secluded cove/harbour. The food and wine was excellent, freshly cooked seasonal food served by happy attentive staff, breakfast was also served in the same restaurant, which was all fresh with a good choice of fresh fruit, yoghurt etc. Also freshly cooked full English or other hot breakfast choices again excellent quality. We will definitely be going back to this beautiful friendly hotel, it’s far too good to only visit once, oh and you get a little goodie bag when you check out.. two bottles of water and some boiled sweets for your onward journey, it’s all about the attention to detail, which is excellent, you really must pay the Lugger a visit.

They were all friendly, smiling and helpful - nothing was too much bother, even our request for a last minute packed lunch was greeted with a “no problem”. Our compliments to the chef, we ate at the hotel on each of the 3 nights. Each meal was delicious and beautifully presented. We noted before our arrival that much was made of the cost of the wine. Personally we had no issues and managed to find a very nice wine at about the £30 mark. It was the little extras that added to our lovely stay. We felt truly rested and relaxed when we left.

Have you ever returned to a favourite hotel or restaurant after a gap of several years and wished you had never gone back? My wife and I were looking to book a friendly, cosy hotel overlooking the sea in South Cornwall, having stayed at a number of hotels in North Cornwall over the years. We saw The Lugger highlighted in a magazine earlier this year and recalled staying there more than 20 years ago. We made the trip and found the hotel to be fabulous in every way. Overlooking the cove at Portloe the bedrooms and restaurant had spectacular views with the coastal path winding its way over the cliffs to Mevagissey to the North and St Mawes to the South. The hotel was welcoming, luxurious and comfortable and the staff were helpful and totally dog friendly. We had five-star service and so did our three Jack Russell dogs. The food was so good we never wished to eat anywhere else. We enjoyed The Lugger so much we have been returned twice since June and we're planning our next visit in the New Year. MG.

This, despite their prominent sign outside saying "Open for morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner. Non-residents welcome". Given that there were very few residents in evidence and we were a party of two at 7pm, it seemed a little churlish. On a brighter note, we then went up the road to the SHIP INN which was absolutely fabulous. Welcoming hosts, gorgeous dinner, superb wine, dogs allowed and wonderful ambience. It is a beautiful 17thcentury built inn. In 2013 the Financial Times said that “it is hard to beat”. The Sunday Times named it “Best Seaside Hotel”. Now there are accolades you can’t ignore! There is a lovely terrace overlooking the sea, so if the weather is nice you can have a drink or lunch on there. a relaxing bliss. The hotel has got a restaurant but we didn't enjoy the food so much and felt they could do better with a traditional restaurant rather than fancy rosette rest. ( another review to come) and also serve lunch. Breakfast was a bit hit and miss. on one occasion we waited 50mins for cooked breakfast - a long wait if you ask me for eggs benedict - and it wasn't that busy at all. definitely need improvement on the speed . quality of food on that day was average .on a different day, the service was reasonably quick and dishes were much better . I think with the hotel of this reputation there is certainly room for improvement around breakfast service. we didn't quite get the ham & cheese on a side since there was no fresh bread/rolls to go with it. also, the young girls serving need a bit more training we felt. they were pretty clueless with no attention to detail or customer service. Having said that the rest of the staff were helpful and accommodating. some areas of the hotel need a bit tlc I would say ( parasols outside for example). All in all we had a lovely stay and would definitely recommend this hotel if you would like a relaxing stay. there are walks you can do and there is a pub in the same village .

Treated Mum to one of her favorite places but very disappointed with the service and food. What has happened? Our lunch meals were delivered an hour after ordering, without any cutlery, napkins or salt & pepper. The soup in a coffee cup was watery, the avocado sandwich was full of piccalilli, smoked salmon with poached egg was cold, and adding a side of chips was restricted to certain dishes. Comparisons with previous years show a huge decline this year and we will not be returning.

For a top location and lovely view The Lugger cannot be beaten. We stopped for a light lunch on the terrace, but were rather underwhelmed. Our light lunch was ok however the service was very inexperienced . The waitress had clearly not been well trained, she had no idea about the house wines being served and kept disappearing from view when needed. Needed to pay by card at reception which appeared almost to be too much trouble for the receptionist.

My wife and I stayed for 3 great nights at the Lugger. We took beach cottage which was really well done up, very comfy and the perfect place for our break. The location is incredible, watching the fishing boats come In and out was a highlight. The food was great and they really make an effort to look after you. I would go back in a flash.

Lovely old hotel right in the cove/harbour of Portloe, luxurious and very comfortable, well appointed bedrooms with hot chocolate and a hot water bottle provided each evening. A great place to unwind, go for cliff top coastal walks followed by a drink in the bar...

We had high hopes of 'The Lugger' as staying locally. When booking a table for a Sunday evening we were told they could only do 6.30 or 7pm which was a bit early. We presumed this was due to the place being busy but it was not at all. So we were surprised when some diners (presumably residents) were not taking their tables until nearly 8.30pm.

I have been coming to Portloe for the last 54 years and the Lugger has been there throughout going through many iterations. This version is very good indeed. We were not staying at the Lugger as we had rented a property in the village but we wanted to have dinner there one evening. Clearly, they give priority for their dinner spaces to residents but not all of them eat in. We pitched up in the morning before we set off for the day and they said they thought it would be possible to have a table for four at 2030 that evening but could we call back around 1400 to confirm. If you remain flexible then I think they will try to squeeze you in.

My wife and I dropped in here just to have a quick bite at lunchtime and a drink. What a lovely little village and so peaceful. We enjoyed our lunch and spent a bit more time than we intended here but that's what you do on holiday. We watched a couple of boats being launched to check on what I presume would be lobster or crab pots.

My husband and I are staying in the village and had heard excellent things about the Lugger. We decided to check it out first by just going for cream tea. When we got there, the two people at reception were lovely and very friendly. We were there at an off time, around 4 PM. They said we could sit in the dining room or outside. The view from the dining room was so beautiful and it was a little chilly outside, so we chose inside and we were excited because we had our pick of tables with beautiful views.

The drive to the Hotel was a little "hair raising" but well worth it , this hotel is situated in the most wonderful spot and the view was breathtaking. We enjoyed our CreamTea , which at £7.50 each was not expensive I think, and the Lunch menu also looked reasonable. However I believe the Dinner menu would be very much a "special occasion" venue for us. The hotel rooms only seen in their brochure, seemed well thought out and charming, but perhaps a little pricey. The only " fly in the ointment" was the staff, who were not exactly warm and friendly, and the ambiance was cool and disinterested. Perhaps as one young lady was obviously being trained by a rather "irritated" colleague things will improve once she has found her feet.

This is a very special place. Right by the water's edge, the hotel has managed to give all the facilities of a boutique hotel without losing its Cornish charm. A very warm welcome followed by drinks served up on the tiny outside terrace to catch the last of the early evening sun. Dinner was delicious, local produce, fish caught that day and properly cooked vegetables. Good selection of wines too. Comfortable room, fairly compact but very nicely decorated, unfortunately didn't manage to get a room with sea view, but we looked over a pretty garden. Up the road is a great little local pub with a garden so the next night we went there before dinner. Lots to see and do and this part of the Cornish coast is just beautiful. Lovely long walks and of course, the sun shone every day!

Stopped for lunch on the off chance. Very welcoming. Nice pint of Tribute with moules and fries. My wife had a very good ham sandwich. Although not fast the service was good and friendly. We sat on the terrace overlooking the lovely, quiet harbour. Altogether a very pleasant experience although I understand that we were very lucky just to walk in without a booking.

We have just spent 4 nights here on a DB&B basis and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.Despite the bad weather, the setting is almost idyllic,& a great base for touring the delights of the Roseland Peninsula. The room was compact but very well presented & lots of nice touches such as cakes in the room when you come back from your day out & hot chocolate ready to be made when you return to your room after dinner.Good breakfast, especially the kippers & some excellent dinner dishes.....got a feeling that there might have been more fish options if the weather had been kind enough to let the fishing boats get to sea. What we did have was very good, notably the crab & sole.Staff were friendly, attentive & helpful.

We stayed using a 'Secret Escapes' deal, which gave us very good value for money. The hotel is lovely, the setting perfect, our room in the Boathouse very comfortable, and the staff welcoming, friendly and hardworking. And all the other little touches - the cakes, hot chocolate and daily weather forecast in our rooms etc - were much appreciated. The chef is very talented, the menu is exciting and the food delicious. However, in common with some reviews here, we have to say that the service at dinner was really too slow to be able to be called 'unhurried'. From other reviews, this does not appear to be a constant issue, but it is something that crops up quite regularly, and we didn't simply experience a 'blip'. The staff in the restaurant and kitchen can be seen to be working extremely hard, so it must be down to some other cause, and it needs to be addressed, as this is the only disappointment. Had we been paying the full tariff, we would have been unhappy.

Portloe is a tiny little cove after about 2 1/2 miles of driving on a one lane road. Once you find it you can't help but fall in love with this gem of a hotel. Our room was a bit small for two women and twin beds but attention was given to every detail. Robes and slippers, a little fridge with fresh milk, a tray of coffee and tea selections. There was a storm brewing so we were very happy to eat at the restaurant in the main part of the hotel where we could watch the waves crashing. When we got back from dinner there was hot chocolate waiting for us. You can walk the cliffs of the coastal trail on either side of the hotel, stunning views. We walked into the little town of Verygn the next day and it was a lovely walk and a sweet little "town". When we got back there was two muffins and tea waiting for us. The staff was so helpful and friendly, felt like we were at home.

Truly hidden from the core of the Roseland. At Veryan, rather than turn right to The Nare, do keep going... and, at the end of the road, prepare to be treated by the modesty of The Lugger offering. Terraces overlooking the tiny natural harbour, restaurant offering protection from elements and great outlook. Simple lunch menu, well cooked, with flair.

The menu choice is varied with mostly locally sourced produce. The food is well prepared, presented and served. The portions are not big but with three courses to eat big portions are unnecessary.I have eaten both the Newlyn crab starter ( would have preferred the more tasty ' brown' crab meat) and the local duck egg starter, both were good quality and sufficient. My main courses for our two dinners were the Monkfish tail and the sirloin steak, the monkfish was in two pieces served with a dahl and an onion bhargee, an Indian flavour to accompany the solid fish. The sirloin was served medium rare in two slices, not a lot of meat but very tasty, accompanied by vegetables and red cabbage. My wife had the Hake which was excellent and the pork fillet, again in small slices. The wine list is comprehensive ( £30+ per bottle) .The staff are well led by the manager, they are very polite and attentive.Overall a really nice restaurant , particularly for those special occasions. These parking at the Lugger and great accommodation if you decide to stay! The SW Coast Path is on the doorstep, a wonderful walk, strenuous in places! If this review has been useful for you I would appreciate your vote....

Wonderfully located this restaurant has, at first sight, an aspirational and innovative menu that appears to promise 'high-end' dining at very reasonable prices. However, a lack of attention to detail and avoidable errors leads to the suspicion that the chef is over-ambitious for his/her skill-set and/or experience. The result is far from a disaster but disappointing for all that. The serving staff are excellent.
