A wonderful relaxing stay at this charming hotel. First class service from all the hotel staff. The breakfast and dinner menu extensive and extremely tasty. Our room was cosy with all the things we needed for a 3 night stay. The hotel had a wonderfully relaxed vibe and a great place to walk parts of the Coastal Path.

Portloe is a tiny fishing village with beautiful views and the Lugger Hotel was the perfect place to stay. We were welcomed by Callum who couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Our accommodation was lovely with views of the sea. The restaurant was excellent. I particularly enjoyed the breakfast and they have an outdoor terrace where you can enjoy a drink overlooking the bay. Can definitely recommend this hotel and will hopefully revisit in the future.

This is a stunning hotel in a unique setting. Our welcome was friendly and efficient and our room was clean and comfortable. The only downside is the restaurant. We waited a very long time for food, were largely ignored and food was very disappointing. The risotto was so poor that the waitress agreed to remove it from the bill. Everything else was fine, but not worthy of the very high prices.

We have previously enjoyed staying at this hotel. Getting to the Lugger, is at times challenging, given the single track roads, but we guess this is what makes portloe such a unique setting. We arrived early, reception staff were friendly and advised that our room was available, to our surprise we were guided across the slipway to a separate building, where our sea view room was located. During our previous visit our sea view room was located in the main building with stunning views. On this occasion there was no mention of our room being located in a separate building at the time of booking, which was disappointing. The room was located on the first floor with French-doors offering a view looking across the inlet. We settled in and took a stroll through the village to a local pub (The Ship Inn) which is worth a visit. The hotel has two terrace areas overlooking the inlet, lovely place to enjoy a glass or two when the weather is good, although service can be slow. We booked the restaurant, the limited menu was fine, service was ordinary, nothing special, our starters were nice, the main course rack of lamb was a little tough, we felt that the food and service was below that of our previous visit. Breakfast was enjoyable. All in all we like the Lugger, but probably wont be revisiting anytime soon.

Ok but disappointing. First impressions of this hotel are very good, it's hidden away in a lovely peaceful cove in a very quiet village with beautiful scenery. There's not alot to do in the immediate area apart from a very "local" pub and walks. That's absolutely fine by us, but if you're travelling and expect to eat anywhere else other than the hotel expect a 30min drive down some very windy roads. We decided to eat our evening meal at the hotel because of that reason. We managed (after a bit of persuading) to get a window table. They don't reserve tables so it's first come first served for where you get to sit, again that's fine, we waited for someone to vacate the table we wanted. The staff in the restaurant are all very young, maybe college age/recent leavers. They were nice enough but didn't really feel they had the confidence to be welcoming and proactive. We were offered a drink at the beginning of the meal but nobody came again so we couldn't reorder and they didn't check on how we were the whole time. After the meal we were left for quite some time with a stack of empty plates and we eventually just left our table to sit in the snug area, very nice and good to have some games there. Again nobody approached us for drinks the entire evening and I had to go seek out staff to order, I would have spent more if they had come to me. On to the room, we were in 204, it was ready on our early arrival which was great. The room itself is cosy, but there are some things I would make people aware of.... I like character in buildings. but I'm 6'2, if you are any taller than 5'10 you will hit your head on the beams, I couldn't actually stand fully upright for our stay. There was another block for normal people which would have been fine, if they had mentioned this on the website I could have decided in advance if I wanted to pay this price to crouch for my entire stay. This was a challenge particularly to have a shower as it's a shower over bath so I had to step up and duck at the same time. The bath itself is narrow and the shower head max hight is probably around 5'4 once you've stepped up into the bath. Because I was showering in a crouched position it was hard to get comfortable and I nearly fell out the bath several times, luckily there's a grab handle. We were below room 205, don't expect sleep if the room above you gets up to use the loo in the night or gets up earlier than you. The lightest footstep sounds like a baby elephant. Immediately outside our room door was the entrance to the car park, convenient but as soon as someone used this door or one at the other end of the corridor the air movement made our door wobble and rattle very noisily. Our hotel windows overlooked reception, I was woken up at 5.30 am by someone having a conversation outside of our room, not sure who this was, perhaps someone coming for a late night walk in the bay or a fisherman. Breakfast, there were 20 guests and 2 staff who were rushed off their feet, there were no glasses for the OJ and three tables were needing to be cleared away. The lady serving was nice enough and I could hear her apologising to other tables for the wait, something about it being bank holiday Monday, not her fault but down to management to staff with enough people, I asked twice and someone else eventually asked too. We got to out table just after 9 hoping to have a breakfast and a walk before checking out but at 9.45 we were still waiting for our breakfast which scuppered this plan. We also noticed a used cup on the window sill and there are dead bugs in the windows (inside), this should be cleaned or at least wiped regularly. When the food arrived it was really good, there were a very small plate of fresh pastries (all the same, no selection) and cereal. I had eggs royale which really fresh and tasty. My partner had a full Cornish which was as expected, not sure the experience was as "award winning" as they state on the website. Overall nice hotel, great views over the cove. potential for peaceful stay but only if you get the right room, we didn't and I had about 3 hours sleep, frustrating when I had a 4 hour drive home. Hotel management could do with recruiting someone with experience to run the restaurant floor in the evening and just more staff in general as relaxing is hard when you're chasing people to get served. The website states it's the only "5 star inn" with a two "AA rosette" dining experience so that what we based our booking, expectations from their website (and the price we paid) and review on. Don't get me wrong, it was a lovely 3 star hotel experience but the only thing 5 star was the price of the food!

This hotel's restaurant is worth a visit just for the view you can enjoy from the dining room or terrace, as it directly overlooks the picturesque Portloe harbour. The cuisine, however, is no different, and will delight you with traditional local dishes revisited with imagination and prepared with skill. An applause to the attentive and courteous dining room staff!

If the sea casts a spell upon you , this is the place ... We couldn't have been more pleased with our stay at The Lugger; and lucky to have been allocated the perfect room for us - The Lookout. The most dramatic , yet peaceful view from our bedroom, and the sound of the waves crashing, the perfect soundscape. Greeted by Allison, chirpy and welcoming, we were off to a great start. We dined nearly every night of our stay here, our compliments to the chef - the meals were delicious, beautifully presented and good portions , every single time. The breakfasts , equally outstanding- from scrambled eggs with a generous portion of smoked salmon to a full Cornish - plus buffet of fruit salad to porridge - cafetière coffee and fresh toast with butter, brought to your table. All staff were professional and friendly- This was a five star experience ! Will be recommending this to family and friends.

This is a lovely location for a hotel! Not all rooms have sea views, or views at all. We paid a lot of money to stay here during the busy season, and were given a room with facing the wall of another building. It was small and stuffy, as you don't get any breeze without a real window. It was marketed as a B&B to us, but breakfast is extra, and quite expensive. If you have the perfect room, you'll have an idyllic stay. Unfortunately, many rooms don't offer the beauty you see on their website.

Spent three nights here and had a very pleasant stay. The reception staff were very helpful arranging for our luggage to be moved to our room as I am disabled with limited mobility. Awesome sea view from our bedroom (room 103) window. Breakfast was very nice, good choice and the waiting staff were very attentive. My only regret was not checking about access to our bedroom which involved a walk from reception across the courtyard and up some uneven patch, then down a series of steps to the rooms, and finally up another flight of stairs to the room. But the stay overall was lovely.

The positive scoring is definately not for the restaurant but for the hotel. If you look at 1 star rating it mostly pertains to the restaurant which makes sense. We had a meal which was bland at best. That’s not really the issue. We were hugely put off by the manager’s deluded sense of self importance and disingenuous disposition. We arrived around 8.30pm. The manager saw his last chance to squeeze some pounds in and seated us though he pulled a face as if to say he was doing us a favour (I wish he hadn’t). He wore a belt with a massive buckle reading BOSS. Probably bought when Hugo was still on trend and wearing brands on your buckle was a thing. I thought straight away, oh, Lordy, he we go. All fur coat and no knickers. The guy had no class. The place was probably 1/4 filled at best and you could feel customers smiling but trying to wriggle away from his disingenuous banter. I didn’t like any of the starters. I’d already chosen my dessert. We ordered mains. The guy tried to hide that he was miffed he wasn’t going to get the revenue from a starter so when we ordered some fries he declined telling me they were too posh for chips - in a joking manner. This response was pompous. We sat, and could see two tables with moules frites. Upon enquiring why we were declined some fries with our meal - only with mussels. I’m sorry, but this is not attending to the customer. If you can do something easily for them, you do. As I say, the guy was a bit bitter we hadn’t ordered starters and certainly wasn’t going to allow us to supplement our mains with some fries. Bad customer, very bad customer. The spring onion mash was the blandest worst I’d had, they got my order wrong - no one checked and we didn’t stop to order the desserts we had chosen. I don’t know if the place is on the bread line but it seems to be penny pinching where it can and the gent was trying to push desserts on another table in a charmless (though he thought himself charming) disingenuous manner. Just to further highlight how they’re penny pinching - We ordered a coke, were charged £3 and it was a bottle sized for a mixer. I mean, come on guys! Get with the programme. This is not how to cut corners. Had we ordered two desserts he’d have made a further £24 out of us. We cut our losses and decided not to order more bland food from a disingenuous penny pincher.

Our second visit here for a night away. Our room was very nice with no problems at all and the lady on the reception could not have been any better. The two new young people in the bar and restaurant were also excellent. The restaurant manager however was rude and brash. He made us both feel very unwelcome over a table mixup not of our making. We would go back tomorrow but not if he is still working there. We did complain and got an apology from the general manager but this senior member of staff was just not good enough.

We have just had two FANTASTIC days at the Lugger. The staff were amazing and the food is really very exceptional. Breakfast was a wide choice of fresh fruit/cereal/ pastries and porridge followed by various delicious cooked choices. We had lunch out but dinner was an amazing experience. The waiters were completely on it and praise to the chef whose food was so delicious and presented beautifully. Our room (203) was really comfortable and super clean. The White company toiletries were a lovely touch. We could have stayed for weeks !

Probably the 6th or 7th time we have stayed here as we love it so much. The position right by the sea, the individuality of the whole hotel and the wonderful welcome are all part of its 'pull'. Since our last visit, the whole place has had a refit and everywhere feels fresh and clean, with well appointed rooms. We chose a room where we could bring our dog,and waiting for her ,were some doggie treats, food bowls and a mat. And Janet in the bar has a whole jar of treats for any dog visitors which Harper adored. We were booked for B&B and evening meal for three nights - the breakfasts were superb - no need for lunch afterwards. The pork belly we had on the second night was divine - and the crackling the best ever! Two of the evening meals were really top notch; one night was very dispapointing- mussels were overcooked, inconsistent by a wide margin in size and flavour - I've had far better mussels in places miles away from the sea! My husband's dessert was brought and it was not what he had ordered. We pointed this error out to the waitress who apoligised and said she would change it. Ten minutes later, the sticky toffee pudding arrived and it was cold, though still edible. No one came to our table to ask if everything was alight so we had a quiet word the next morning with a member of the restaurant staff and from that moment, all our other meals were absolutely beautiful. The Lugger - we love you!

Visited here for dinner a few days ago. My wife and I both had main of bream and dessert of mango cheesecake, both delicious although one fish fillet had many bones. Getting to the restaurant in the evening from St Austell by satnav was an awful journey. Narrow roads with grass down the middle in many cases. In addition because of heavy rain a long stretch of the road had about 6 inches depth of water. This created a bow wave in front of the car as we drove along very slowly. Awful experience. Fortunately a lady on reception at The Lugger gave us good advice on getting back to St Austell after our meal. We express our thanks here!

I’m just back home after two fabulous nights staying at The Lugger with my husband , our second visit . The hotel is located right on the SW Coast path so is perfect whether you’re a walker or just want to relax by the sea . This place is great summer or winter , there’s always a warm welcome . We had a sea view room which was stylish, clean and comfortable and had lots of little extras. The log burner was lit in the lounge, making it cosy for pre and post dinner drinks . The food was good especially the breakfasts! All of the staff were fabulous but I must say special thanks to the lovely Debbie serving breakfasts , for her lovely, happy face and helpful attitude. Also to Alison on reception, who is dedicated to making your stay perfect . I highly recommend and will definitely be returning!!

When my wife and I arrived for dinner we were courteously greeted by the restaurant manager, indeed every one of the front of house staff we had contact were charming and helpful. We had a pre dinner drink giving us time to peruse the Menu. It was nice not to be hurried. We were shown to our table and asked where we would like to sit rather than being told where to sit, which was a nice change. The food was excellent and compared to some of the restaurants we have eaten in, in Falmouth, the portions were of a good size and again unlike Falmouth good value for money. The Chef’s should be congratulated, and indeed we would like to draw attention to one Chef, Shannon, who we asked to be introduced to, who was responsible for some of our dishes. We are sure he will go far. Overall full marks, great ambience, great food and great staff, front and back.

And all staff we came across were very helpful and made us feel very welcomed. The room 307 was Cosy and clean, with great amenities and a very comfortable superking size bed. We had a lovely window view of the Portloe tiny harbour. Breakfast was fresh and delicious. We would definitely recommend this hotel. My only very small critique would be maybe to think about having " No plastic' wrapping on the robes, slippers and amenities....This is just my personal thoughts on being sustainable. Just back from two wonderful nights where the service, friendliness and food couldn't be faulted! Our lovely room had a small seaview and contained tea/coffee-making items (and gorgeous cookies!), fresh fruit and mints. A fridge with fresh milk was also provided, which was a lovely touch - no plastic long life mini cartons of milk here! Alison as front of house, really made our stay - from the moment we arrived and she gave us a tour of the lounge, bar and restaurant (and explained how breakfast was set up), then showing us to our room, to when we sadly left, she couldn't have been nicer. Similarly the head chef was great to chat to (we bumped into him in reception and then the car park), and dealt with our food allergy and intolerances in his stride. A few menu items changed for our second night which was nice. As someone has stated, they do add a 10% service charge to all food and drink (and clearly state this), but to be honest, it amounted to how much we would have left as a tip anyway. It is shared with all the staff (kitchen, reception and housekeepers) so you don't have to find cash to leave in the room etc. Luxury toiletries from The White Stuff in refillable containers was also appreciated and good to see. Fantastic location too! We will return ....

We really enjoyed our 4 night break in room 402 "The Lookout" with views out to sea and the harbour. This room is nicely decorated with a small fridge in the wardrobe, albeit space is limited especially the bathroom. The room had fresh fruit and bottled water provided every day. Customer service from reception (Alison & Joanna) and the restaurant was first class. The restaurant food was very good but the dinner menu repetitive for a 4 night stay ... the only fish was sole for 2 nights. Surprisingly the locally caught sea bass was not an option during our stay. As an alternative we tried The Ship with its classic pub menu just 150 metres away. If you are looking for good quality accommodation in an unspoilt location on the South West Coast Path then The Lugger will not disappoint.

Had a two night break on Dinner Bed and Breakfast deal, and received a warm welcome. Shown up to room which had good view of the harbour. Room was pleasant and clean, and like the bathroom, fairly small. Unfortunately, walls were paper thin, and next door room could be clearly heard - including when they were using the bathroom!! Dinners were well presented, although a little fussy. Would have been nice to have option each evening of fresh fish with new potatoes and veg. rather than with rice and curry sauce or other mixtures. Still very tasty, but couldn’t help think they had missed a trick by trying to be different. Breakfast was good choice of fruit and cooked full Cornish as you would expect, but I have to say bacon was very leathery (possibly cooked in advance?) As theTitle says, all of the staff were outstanding, and a credit to the company. Special mention has to be made of Katie - probably the youngest member of staff. After a long morning walk along the Coast Path, we decided to take a bus into Truro. Katie was at the bus stop, and advised us that a bus was due shortly, and said she would hold the bus for us while we changed our footware! She then gave us the times of the buses and where to catch them. She really went out of her way to be so helpful. Thank you Katie. Now a little criticism when it comes to the bill. There is a note on the menue that a service charge will be added to cost of drinks and food, but as we were on DB&B, I wrongly assumed that the charge would only be added for “extra” items. Wrong. It was also added for dinner! I must point out that menu states the charge can be taken off, which I asked them to do, then I left cash for gratuities to the staff. On my reviews I usually state whether I recommend the hotel and whether I would return. Definitely worth a visit, particularly if you like walking

Great rooms, with every little luxury. Friendly professional staff. Amazing food, made from local specialities. Huge sublime breakfasts and fabulous dinners. Good wine list, too, and a strong selection of other drinks, though a few more Cornish beers wouldn't go amiss. Not cheap but you...

Popped in for a cream tea - However, the scones were small and overheated in the microwave which made them very crunchy- so I’m afraid that I would not return for another or recommend it to friends- what a pity as the location was perfect

We stayed in Middle Cottage - lovely views or the harbour and out to sea. We loved the terrace and the cottage was really comfortable. Lounge and kitchen downstairs. No mobile phone reception but the WiFi reliable. Kitchen has microwave, hob, oven and dishwasher - but no crockery or cutlery - maybe due to Covid-19? Great bed and lovely bathroom. We would definitely go back. The hotel was following Covid-19 guidelines to the letter which suited us fine.

We had booked an evening meal at the restaurant. We were told to go and fetch a face mask to be able to walk through the restaurant to get to our table. The food was excellent. We were asked to order desert at the same time as other food ‘to minimise trips to the table’. Of all the interpretations of coronavirus rules, this was the strictest and most unfriendly ☹️.

Was really looking forward to a 2 night anniversary stay at this highly rated hotel. What a disappointment Room was small, boiling hot with no air conditioning and the water treatment plant right outside the window meant a very noisy, or boiling night. The evening meal felt like a rush with 3, expensive courses served and collected in under a hour. No other option available to eat, without driving and the effort involved in parking in the ridiculously small and tight car park put us off the first night. But we did make the effort the second night. At nearly £300 per night it certainly isn't value for money. The staff were friendly but poorly trained. I asked for warm toast with my breakfast but that was too difficult. Toast, on both mornings was delivered as soon as we sat down and the breakfast sometime later. Such a disappointment.

Lovely position for a costal paths and surrounding area. Unfortunately service is poor on occasion ( although sone staff were lovely ) We were told no lunch to return to the hotel over run with non residents eating lunch . We felt like the poor relative after most of Cornwall is residents only we were stuck with nothing . Dinner also gone down hill no atmosphere and courses coming far to quickly in the attempt to move you through . Rooms small but ok only serviced on arrival due to covid . In summary lovely little port but hotel gave us no reason to return .

i stayed here a few times in the good days but all good staff have left as they cannot bear the management and nor could i. unhelpful and obstructive. blocked sinks, no hotwater on one trip and cooked breakfasts thta arrived cold. there was a very bossy young man very basil fawlty who the staff could not bear and a jobsworthy newcomer to cornwall and a totally disinterested general manager who is never there.its a huge shame because the setting is wonerful. if you go for longer than two nights use it as a b and b and have as little to do with the management as possible.

A wonderful welcoming hotel. The staff were all very courteous to us and nothing was too much trouble. Lots of lovely touches in the very clean and comfortable bedroom such as homemade cookies to luxury toiletries. There was even a hot water bottle and hot chocolate left outside the room in the evening. The breakfast was amazing and I had Eggs Benedict, I’m no Masterchef judge but I can only describe the ones I had as the best ever!!! Most recommended to try. We live only 40 minutes away from the Luggar and will return there again for another sneaky night away from work/home life to recharge our batteries again. Thank you Lugger Crew.

First visit to The Lugger in Portloe, I usually stay in Port Issac this time we chose a little further south so were not sure what to expect and relied on Secret Escapes. Arrival first impression were good reception very helpful.Room very nice well equipped and comfortable. Every evening the bed is turned down, cups with hot chocolate for night cap and a hot water bottle placed in the bed. Every day muffins and cookies placed in the room.Bar area and dining room, very comfortable clean and well presented.Staff excellent they make sure one enjoys the stay.Good breakfast menu freshly cooked plus small buffet.Evening meal, new menu everyday based on fresh local products especially fish. The kitchen staff incredibly talented, the food is to die for chef has a real talent for bringing out the true taste of the product. A lovely young lady chef makes the puddings and what a treat they are.All in all a perfect experience that we can’t wait to do again, everything they staff do is for your enjoyment.

Spent a long weekend at this delightful hidden Inn in the fishing village of Portloe Cornwall. We reserved a room with a sea view, looking out into the narrow harbour. The large room was equipped with a six foot bed, adequate storage and good WiFi. The restaurant was excellent although the tables a little small. The menus gave a great variety of local seafood and meat. Beautifully presented and of excellent quality and proportions. Service impeccable and attentive, maybe a little too spontaneous with course delivery. Lovely touches in the room . Hot water bottle placed in the bed at night, chocolate and marshmallows nightcap. Afternoons with cake and biscuits. Pillow sleep sprays. Breakfasts sumptuous and extensive . The kippers one of the best. Some good walks along he coastal paths. Easy access to St Mawes by car and by Ferry ( worth booking on line for reduction and any time use) to Falmouth. King Harry Ferry also from this peninsula ( return car ferry £8. ) to Trellisic National Trust garden and gallery.

Possibly the nicest hotel I have ever stayed in. If you want something different, away from the corporate hotels with fresh air, a sea view and the very best hospitality then this is the place to go. Nestled in the small quaint harbour of Portloe this hotel offers stunning views from the restaurant and food that does not disappoint. From the reception to lounge area with open log fire and sofa’s it really is the most relaxing place. We spent 3 nights here and had the best sleep ever in our super king bed. Listening to the waves from our window was simply stunning and hypnotic and something you will cherish forever. All of the staff are so friendly and welcoming and the manager (Anne) is a delight. You may pay a little extra and there is no pool, sauna or jacuzzi but the scenery, service and little touches of elegance (including a hot water bottle delivered to your room) more than make up for this. We will be back for sure one day. Our thanks to the team for making this a truly memorable holiday.

Stayed for one night (hotel has separate review) and also had dinner here. The service was faultless. The lobster starters were lovely but the mains were not. The chicken main was really tough and dry. My hake was fine but was lukewarm and the accompanying veg were also only just lukewarm. Needed lots of seasoning. Not a great experience this time.

The hotel is located in the attractive small fishing village of Portloe, within walking distance of the Camping and Caravanning Cub site in Veryan, where we were staying. We stopped for lunch during our walk from the campsite to Portloe and returning along part of the coastal path - a distance of about 5 miles. Our lunch was delicious - a mussel chowder and smoked salmon sandwiches& salad, served in a delightful dining room with a lovely view from our window table overlooking the small harbour. Highly recommended - somewhere we would like to return to ( and stay in the hotel!) Good friendly service in the restaurant.

Quality oozes from this bjiou boutique hotel hunkered down at the high water mark of Portloe harbour, with its handful of fishing boats, right from the warm welcome on arrival. Our bedroom was spacious, with a decent bath, robes and (somewhat unexpecte) turn down service. But the high point was dinner. It was top drawer, from start to finish, from the amuse bouche to the beautifully presented puddings. The attentive staff were excellent. Can't wait to get back for a longer stay!

Lovely quaint and exceptionally clean hotel on the waters edge in Portloe. Very welcoming staff, nothing too much trouble. The food is interesting, well presented and the chef obviously goes to a lot of trouble to produce the dishes. Not all to our taste but a no quibble refund on one meal on our inclusive of breakfast and evening meal booking was graciously given. Breakfasts are good, cereal and continental table and cooked to order full English and various fish options. The smoked haddock was lovely. Enjoyed our stay lots of little touches, biscuits, cakes and a bag of bottled waters and sweets for the journey home - was definitely worth visiting.

Our meal on the second night of our 3 night stay was just perfect. I had a delicious antipasti plate to start, followed by corn fed chicken while my husband had rump of lamb. Both were meltingly tender, with delicious vegetable accompaniments. We finished with creme brûlée and plum and almond tart - gorgeous. Service was exemplary and our setting, by the window overlooking the small harbour, was out of this world. In short - perfection.

A beautiful hotel nestled in a secluded bay right on the edge of the sea, such a tranquil place. We stayed for one night in a sea view room, which was in a little Annex across from the main hotel, which was no problem at all, it added to the seclusion. Our room was exceptionally clean, light and airy, a lovely touch was the homemade cookies left by the tea & coffee, with fresh milk in the fridge. We were met with a very warm and friendly welcome, with a brief but informative overview of the hotel. we ate in the beautiful relaxed restaurant which overlooks the secluded cove/harbour. The food and wine was excellent, freshly cooked seasonal food served by happy attentive staff, breakfast was also served in the same restaurant, which was all fresh with a good choice of fresh fruit, yoghurt etc. Also freshly cooked full English or other hot breakfast choices again excellent quality. We will definitely be going back to this beautiful friendly hotel, it’s far too good to only visit once, oh and you get a little goodie bag when you check out.. two bottles of water and some boiled sweets for your onward journey, it’s all about the attention to detail, which is excellent, you really must pay the Lugger a visit.

My husband recently stayed at the Lugger for a long weekend to celebrate our Pearl Wedding. After a 7 hour drive we arrived at the Lugger - what a joy. We could not fault anything. Our room had a little terraced area and from that we could see the harbour. The room itself was spotless and charmingly decorated. The staff are the real asset to this hotel. They were all friendly, smiling and helpful - nothing was too much bother, even our request for a last minute packed lunch was greeted with a “no problem”. Our compliments to the chef, we ate at the hotel on each of the 3 nights. Each meal was delicious and beautifully presented. We noted before our arrival that much was made of the cost of the wine. Personally we had no issues and managed to find a very nice wine at about the £30 mark. It was the little extras that added to our lovely stay. We felt truly rested and relaxed when we left.

Lots of lovely little touches like hot water bottle and hot chocolate left in room, a bottle of water and mints for the journey home and friendly attentive staff who adapted menu to suit and who went that extra mile to make it a fantastic weekend away. The room was comfortable, clean and cosy and although we could hear the room above as they walked around it is after all converted cottages and full of character and did not bother us. We've been to the PBC on and off for more than twenty years, from when it would close for the winter, from when Sir Terry Frost would stride in for Sunday lunch in his red beret, from when it used to have quirky children's buckets on the table for the cutlery, and most especially for the frequently changing and interesting menus. Sadly, nowadays the menu stays pretty the same and uninspired, the portions scant while all the flair has seeped away, not that this is unique in Cornwall restaurants. But add to this the odd set menu that boasts mains at £20 but if you think of opting for fish curry there a supplement of £15! Fish curry for £35! Fish Curry has been on the PBG menu for years...is it still in development? We'll leave it be for a few years, see if the restaurant rediscovers some of the elan and distinctive charm that it has so obviously lost.

As we were staying in Carbis Bay (and having already really enjoyed The Ugly Butterfly) we chose to visit Walter's as well. Booking by telephone was easy and I was impressed that the person taking our booking asked about dietary requirements. We were, however, less impressed when we arrived at the restaurant and the staff appeared both disinterested to see us AND confused by being asked what for a gluten free menu for my wife. It took several minutes for them to manually mark up a menu with a pen to indicate what was gluten free, something we would expect to be ready at a venue in this price range. The food itself was very nice, which is the rescuing factor for this review, but when we pay this sort of price for food we also expect a nice ambience and friendly welcome. This contrast is made especially clear by our having eaten at both adjacent restaurants during the same stay (Beach Club and Ugly Butterfly) where both the staff and the vibes could not have been more friendly, welcoming and fun. We would not choose to return to this restaurant with both these alternatives being only a matter of metres away.
