Please rethink. We are here during half term. Busy? No. One other table only yet service took too long. The higher prices don’t match the quality of the bland food. Everything we had was dry and chewy.. we did complain and got one meal refunded as it was pork belly with no pork! The kids meals were ok to be fair but the main menu was awful, pizza was bought in and dry, ham crumbled upon touch. The greens with the mains were undercooked and spikey. The menus were laminated plastic like a cafe which doesn’t match the £29 price tag for some meals. No music, weird atmosphere. Breakfast was ok, basic and warm but left a lot to be desired sadly

This hotel has a captive audience next to the zoo and near peppa pig world. It seems because of this, it just doesn’t try. The restaurant is filthy, the chairs and tables are stained and marked. The menu options looked ok. Burger; husband said worst he’s had in 5 years Pizza; cheese and Tom dumped on a ready made stale base Fish and chips; sent back as had a dead fly in it! Witnessed 4 meals being sent back including my own. The boys serving were friendly but helpless. Don’t bother

Went for evening meal , no staff so bar food only. Great. Small choice so went with fish and chips. While waiting noticed one couple gave up waiting for the chips to arrive for their children's pizza and the couple in front of us had the wrong meals bought 3 times, quite something given their were only 7 choices on the menu. Breakfast was equally chaotic , bacon that you couldn't cut with a knife and sausages that were cremated. Came here 10 years ago and it was bad then, didnt think it could get worse but surprise! It can. Just because you do a half price 2 night stay doesnt mean you should get half the service! Staff are lovely and friendly but look shell shocked all the time you are speaking to them. They are all very young and no sign of a guiding hand anywhere. Shame, hotel could make a fortune if run correctly

What can I say … The afternoon tea food was really very good and consisted of really fresh sandwiches, lovely warm scones, with jam and cream and fresh although uninteresting and rather bland pieces of cake! The young man who served us was very polite and friendly! The hotel restaurant itself was a disgrace, in fact it was disgusting . The carpet was full of stains, the radiators were dirty, the floor had bits of food on it where we were sitting and our table was so sticky that the saucers and tea plates were stuck! We were the only people sat in the restaurant, we having afternoon tea so …being busy could not be an excuse!!! The afternoon tea was a gift! such a shame that I feel the need to alert people to consider visiting this hotel prior to booking the restaurant if you want a clean venue

We were staying at the hotel and were short on time so had to eat here but wish we hadn’t! The service, the food and the value for money were all bad enough for me to bother to write a review 4 months later! Firstly, I should say that the restaurant wasn’t busy but our drinks were forgotten and were brought after our mains arrived after we asked for them again. The gentleman who took our order didn’t write anything down and got the wine wrong and didn’t seem at all apologetic. The food is massively over priced, the £15 veggie burger was laughable and the £7 kids pasta was basically tinned tomatoes on fusilli. I feel like they’re trying be something they’re not and charge according to their aspirations. The following day’s breakfast was ok but we had to wait 25 minutes for the breakfast tray to reach us and serve us, tea, coffee and cereal.

After a somewhat of a disaster visiting the Marwell Zoo Hotel, we decided to move to the artisan restaurant to reduce the noise levels from the wedding. When the menu arrived we were rather surprised to see the tantalizing flavours described in the menu, the service was personal, welcoming and fun. I ordered a cote du rhone which was unfortunately was out of stock, and was left with limited choices. It is clear the chef has a flair for creativity, and superior delivery of the food. A good restaurant that is over shadowed by a hotel that really does not understand its customers.

My wife booked afternoon tea at the Marwell hotel as we were in the area. The restaurant needs updating and my wife spotted that the curtain was coming off its rail. There was only one other couple in the restaurant also having the tea, so not much of an atmosphere. We had to wait to go in the restaurant even though we had booked a specific time as one table was being used to sort something for a wedding that was being held later. Service was slow and the afternoon tea was disappointing. You get 3 finger sandwiches which were really small and slightly dry. We had ordered the champagne tea and our waitress only realised when I asked her to check our booking. The scones were not great either. All in all not a place to come for afternoon tea.

Popped to Marwell Hotel for a last minute romantic getaway to visit the zoo and ate breakfast and evening meal at the lounge. Was a quiet Sunday evening and only one waiter was serving with another behind the bar, he was incredibly friendly and welcoming and went above and beyond to create a great atmosphere, taking photos for us as we were clearly on a romantic break and taking the time to chat and joke just enough and leaving us alone when appropriate. Food was very good quality, exceptional for the prices charges, additional canapes and sorbet courses were included which hadn't been on the menu and helped really create a good evening. The entire building but especially the bar and restaurant areas are very impressive designs Cooked breakfast the next morning was lovely, my partner opted to upgrade to pancakes which she loved, I stuck to and enjoyed a perfectly cooked full english

The website for this restaurant and hotel looked promising - once we arrived there we knew it was all a complete fabrication. We were a party of 18 - a mixed age group including two infants and two children. The hotel lounge was decidedly run-down, grubby, (including the toilets), and uninviting. Once insdie the dining room we were in for a 'real treat'- a particlarly filthy and stained carpet, the fabric chairs were covered in oil streaks and other unmentionable looking detritus. The food took ages to arrive, and was (although beefed up in the description) a very mediocre roast. Soggy veg, tasteless undercooked meat and puddings which had been obviously microwaved into a hard inedible lump. The staff did their best - despite spilling custard down the back of two of our party - but were young and quite obviously undertrained. All in all ity was an embarrassing disaster. We will NEVER visit this place again and will certainly warn our friends and relatives. 0/10 overall

At first sight from the outside the hotel looks run down. Inside reinforces this view. The decor is tired and the whole place is in need of refurbishment. The carpets and furniture were dirty. The service was unprofessional and slow. We waited over half an hour for our starters and even longer for our main courses. There was a wedding party in another room, so the kitchen obviously could not cope, despite our party having pre-ordered all our courses. The food was very poor quality, badly cooked and expensive for a standard Sunday Lunch, despite being advertised as a Mother's Day Special. We had ordered a range of dishes and almost all were poor. The roast beef especially was under cooked and tough. The hot puddings had obviously been microwaved and were hard and dry.We felt that, although the young staff were trying to be helpful, they had not been trained and were let down by the kitchen and the management. We will not return to this hotel for any reason. All in all, a very disappointing visit for our large party.

As we were alone, she told us we could have waiter service! Great food and plentiful. Really hot and fresh cooked and the chef came out herself to see if everything was ok. Desserts were the winner. Fresh Chocolate fondant and rhubarb crumble with huge jug of custard. Yum. Slightly out of the way but food pretty good.

We always try and take matters up with the hotel or restaurant first so I rang to check who owned it and the head receptionist asked if I would send the e-mail to her. I did so on the 7th August and followed it up with a reminder in October. To date we have not received the courtesy of any sort of response. Sums the place up really

Had afternoon tea here yesterday with my mum for her birthday. We arrived at reception at 2:50 for our 3pm booking. Asked to wait in the lobby/bar to be seated in the restaurant. Waiting...waiting...3pm came...waiting...3:15...waiting...another couple of ladies waiting in the lobby, wondered if they were waiting for the same thing...one gets up and says they were booked for 3pm...lady rings someone...finally someone comes to pick us all up! 3:20. Smelling tea(which is a nice touch) until 3:38. Served tea at 3:40ish! This is why I've only given 3 stars. Due to being served tea etc 40 minutes after booking(I expect to be seated the time I booked!) and the fact that the customer service wasn't 100% the young waiter(guy-the girl was lovely)serving was a bit fed up looking and rather plonked down our bill and took away our tea stand as soon as our plates were cleared. A sign to say 'clear off now'! He took my voucher code with a 'all I need it this' and never came back!!!! Not so much as a smile. We weren't even there for the full 1.5hours allotted for the red letter day tea experienced. Also the sofas in the lobby and the decoration in the restaurant need some work. Scratches all along the walls. Every single window was open in the restaurant too and it was freeeeezing! We closed the one nearest us. The food-brilliant. Fantastic. Just attended a business conference where the hotel put on lunch. We had the choice of 4 types of sandwich priced at £5.50 per sandwich. That seemed pretty high, but having not brought lunch, we had little choice. What we got for our £5.50 was atrocious. The bread was store bought, thin and certainly not as fresh. The tuna filling was negligible in that there was not much of it and was very bland. The service was awful - we had all pre-ordered but still had to wait 30min for our food. All in all a terrible experience - if you are going to this hotel for a business meeting, I suggest you take a packed lunch. Oh and while you are at it, you might as well take a flask of coffee as they will sell you coffee for £2 a cup - it's filter coffee and not great so definitely not worth the £2 - massive margin I am sure! I didn't have the tea, but that's the same - hot water and a tea bag for £2 - simply not worth it.

I have now stayed here numerous times. I find the hotel quirky, but charming. There is adequate parking, the entrance to the hotel is a bit of a pain as the doors are stiff and small. The reception staff are friendly and professional. The reception is positioned opposite to the bar area. I have had a few rooms now and like first floor more than ground. Rooms are light airy and good for business needs, the connecting corridors are great with a large amount of glass. The bar is slightly small especially when there are a lot of people and tables outside can be open to the wild life liked or not, especially for the squeamish. Bar meals are various and very tasty. The restaurant is a real surprise cuisine wise. Decor is light and staff attentive and friendly……do try the food in the restaurant you will really be surprised!!. Breakfast is the normal buffet style, but slightly better, sausages are quite tasty, scrambled egg not over cooked and just nice. The whole place just feels like you’re on holiday and I love staying here on business. It can get ruckus near the weekends as they cater for weddings. But the staff here can’t do enough. More crystal champagne is needed though guys please. Keep doing what you do. I have not tried the spa and the gym and pool are really small but all forgiven.

My daughter treated me to afternoon tea on 18th April 2015. There was a wedding taking place but this did not detract from the service we received. On arrival we were asked to take a seat a young man then came to escort us to our seats. He diligently ran through the various leaf teas and left us to choose. our tea selection along with a timer to make sure our chosen tea was brewed to perfection arrived along with a selection of petite fours and sandwiches . The scones with jam and clotted cream arrived later. The waiter was attentive without being intrusive and was keen to make sure we enjoyed our experience and wanted for nothing. The customer service we received was excellent and I would definetly return.

Went there twice in 2 days, once to meet up with a collaborator from work and then again with an awayday. On both occasions I was pleasantly surprised how able, attentive and helpful they were at accommodating our needs, not only dietary, but also in other little ways, like the Maitre D observed that my partner is left handed and discretely swapped round the cutlery without him even noticing it had happened. They were knowledgeable about their menu and what the food contained (everything prepared from scratch on thee premises!) and had some fantastic tasting creations to offer, where even I as a fairly competent cook myself could not figure out how to re-cook the same dish at home. Gluten free bread was available as a matter of course, they brought us separate butter, so no cross-contamination would occur and made us feel all round very welcome and not like we were being awkward. At the awayday I only stepped in for a colleague on the day, so again they had no prior notice of my dietary needs, b but crafted a lovely Risotto and a dessert which was out of this world (some kind of chocolate souffle), this was the first time ever on a meal out that the gluten free dessert was better than everyone else's and I was getting jealous looks and comments! :-) They do weddings too, so I am seriously considering the venue. Last but not least it's in a lovely countryside setting and the Zoo Marwell Wildlife next door...

I ate squid ink tapioca with my meal at this restaurant, nuff said. It was amazing! Something really different and special about the menu. Very Heston-esq menu. Not the cheapest place I've ever eaten but the food and the staff were top class. The waiter knew so much about the food which was really helpful and informative and we even got a freebie taster course which was a lovely touch.

We were asked to eat in the restaurant for a pre-night wedding meal. The restaurant was quiet so we were surprised that the tables for the 30 or so guests present had not been joined up, or that an offer to do his was not suggested, that instead resulted in little if any interaction between the various parties. The restaurant was very dark with a number of guests having to get up out of their chairs and stand under a light to read the menu.Everyone seemed to choose from the “Bigger Bites” section given the extortionate A La Carte menu prices. I having the burger and my wife the fish goujons. Burger £11.50 came in a semi toasted burger bun so was not soft. Bacon was fine but cheese, mayo and pickle were minimal along with a small ramakin of about 14 chips. Total waste of money as were the fish goujons, £12.50 which were few, very dry and probably obtained from one of the big hotel catering suppliers. So disappointed we never bothered with a dessert.Restaurant manager was very attentive, didn’t bother complaining about the food but did mention the lighting or rather lack of it, particularly as he could not read the room number on our bill. He commented that he had mentioned this to the hotel and they were looking into it, but until this was resolved certain areas of the restaurant were either too dark or too bright if more lights were turned on, so taking away the romantic ambience of the restaurant. True but you’re not going to get a lot of romance from such a minimal menu unless you've money to burn! The hotel menu is of quality nouvelle Michelin style which would be fine if the hotel itself were of a similar standard, which it is not and have reviewed separately.

The dining experience at Marwell hotel was off the scale. We were there for my sisters 50th birthday. The restaurant was closed for cleaning and it was a Sunday evening. The staff very kindly made up a table on the mezzanine floor above the lounge/bar. It was perfect - even though the hotel was quiet the ambience was good, the staff (Chris) was attentive and informative. We started with a muse bouche which is a pre starter which truly tckled the taste buds. My sister is allergic to garlic and chef was asked to provide an alternative - when it arrived we were thinking mmmm broccoli not quite the excitement - but then the proof was in the eating! I wont give you a blow by blow but if you need somewhere not obvious to go and eat something lovely give Marwell Hotel restaurant a go - I am sure you wont be disappointed. Its not cheap but the its not from the freezer and deep fried! Enjoy

I had a reservation booked for my mums birthday here but really disappointed with the afternoon tea - after paying over £46 we received nothing like what they advertised on the website. Advertised:Roast sirloin of beef savora mustard Smoked salmon crème fraiche, watercress Free range local hen’s egg mayonnaise, cress Chicken caesar baby gem lettuce Cream cheese cucumber With parsnip crispsWe got: Salmon and cucumber, grated cheese, ham and mustard and egg and no sign of the parsnip crisps. We had 1 scone each (no choice of fruit or plain as advertised) and 1 tiny pot of clotted cream between 3. The cakes and pastries were non existent, 2 shortbread biscuits, a square of flapjack and 2 (disgusting) tiny tartlet things. We also had the choice of just tea, coffee and earl grey - no sign of an indulgent tea selection! Then we got just 1 pot of tea between 3 of us and no sugar! As it was a surprise birthday gift for my mum, I didn't cause any issues at the time however I have since sent them an email to let them know about our experience!

I bought afternoon tea as part of my friends birthday present.....what a mistake. From the outside it looked like a hostel, tired and rundown. It didn't get much better inside. Reception untidy with shabby cushions, could have looked good with a bit of TLC. The room we had tea in was awful, more like a church hall than a hotel restaurant, with one man eating lunch in his pyjamas and socks!! Prosecco was flat and warm, cakes were tiny which wouldn't have been a problem if they had been good but they weren't......sandwiches were nice d scones were lovely and served warm

I booked afternoon tea as a birthday treat for myself and my mum with a Groupon voucher. First impressions of the outside of the hotel, tatty, dark, tired and needing a complete makeover. Inside the reception area was extremely clean although the furniture was very dated. We were shown straight away to the room for afternoon tea and I have to say I felt a tad disappointed, not the nice country hotel described, I've sat in better restaurants in department stores! On the positive side, the staff were excellent, very attentive, polite and nothing was too much trouble. Afternoon tea was lovely, glass of prosecco, unlimited tea and coffee, good selection of sandwiches (although the bread wasn't homemade), scones, clotted cream and jam, and the bite size cakes were delicious! On the whole we enjoyed our visit but I'm glad I booked this through Groupon and didn't pay full price. Food and staff 100% but hotel really is looking tired and in dire need of some tlc.

£26.50 for a day pass, although asked for £30 which includes donation. Our party was made up of 5 adults - we didn’t donate. To put into context, my husband and I have been members of Marwell in our days before our children. It holds a special place in our hearts. We moved away but always managed to make at least 2 visits a year as the children grew up & still do - the kids are now into their 20’s and often visit with us. Sadly the experience over the last 10 -15 years has progressively gotten worse. Every time we go we hope it will be better. Marwell was always at the forefront of conservation and education & had an extremely successful breeding program for the rhinos and giraffes. Much money has been spent on enclosures that didn’t work, the snow leopards, the cheeta, the walkway over the persian leopard, now cloud leopard, the new tropical house, the gibbon enclosure, kids play areas. Now it is a shell. Few animals, lots of paddocks full of weeds, & plastic bottles & little or no information. The annual membership is a steal but place feels more of a kiddies play area than a serious home for conservation and education. It’s expensive and disappointing. Bit on context - The Cotswold Wildlife Park is £19 for an adult. A much smaller facility but full of animals and information & staff happy to help and answer questions.

This pub proclaim on their very own website to be a ‘friendly local pub’, ‘families welcome’, ‘friendly publicans’, ‘where community comes together’, ‘you’ll feel part of the family’…which is quite frankly outrageous given our two experiences here. On the first occasion my little boy became upset in the pub (over something i cant remember- but hes 4, so standard 4yo behaviour which lasted only a minute or two). And when i came back in from the garden, I heard them laughing and one member of staff said ‘hes a brat, and his mother just cant control him which isnt my problem’. Then (heaven knows why we went back) - my friends little boy cut his cheek on the side of a bench in the beer garden - they refused to give us any first aid or call a taxi for A&E, let alone any empathy or basic duty of care. When my husband challenged the manager (Ade) and he said to us ‘if i had my way id make this an adults only pub so we dont have to deal with these nightmare kids’. I could not believe how cruel and uncaring the people working here could be. A little boy had hurt himself and they couldn’t have cared less- but more than that- they were hostile, unhelpful and offensive about the whole thing. Despite it being our local, we have not returned- and we will not be.

Came in for some drinks with friends- the women wouldn’t leave us alone the whole night. Watched us on the CCTV when we weren’t doing anything wrong and asked us to leave when we had bought lots of drinks. The food is sub par and the drinks extortionate . My wife and I found ourselves at the Cricketers Inn having tried a couple of closer pubs which had stopped serving food at 3pm (totally understandable but we had a lot on and we're running late and hungry!). We're glad we did. We received a warm welcome and a great lunch. 2 courses and some drinks came to just under £50 which I'm not going complain about. The food came out nice and quick, fresh and roasting hot. It was delicious, hats off to the chef. My wife had a chicken burger and I had a stir fry, both went down well. I'd recommend a visit, I'm a little disappointed that we didn't have the kids with us as the play area looked like it would have kept them occupied! Well done.
