Two of us came here on spec on a dreary Wednesday lunchtime. At first sight we almost didn't go inside because it looked rather shabby but while sitting in the car park trying to decide whether to risk it, two people arrived and we asked if they'd ever eaten there which they assured us they had and they'd never had a bad meal. On going inside we received a warm welcome from the Landlord, ordered our food which turned out to be delicious (lamb chops for one of us and the salmon in lemon sauce for me). The chips, potatoes and vegetables were well cooked and the desserts (sticky toffee pudding/plum crumble) were very good too. Service was excellent. It's clearly a pub the locals value because lots of people arrived while we were there and were greeted as friends yet we didn't feel like outsiders at all. Yes, the decor is dated and the fencing outside a bit ramshackle but we couldn't fault anything about the food or service. I'd like to see the front door have a coat of paint because that was the most off-putting thing and made us hesitate as to what to expect inside. Go in, you won't be disappointed. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g1936909-d3206542-r973226471-The_Lord_Raglan-Staplehurst_Kent_England.html#

We ate here on a weekday evening. The place was quite busy. Service here is always friendly. The pub itself has not changed for many years and the decoration is starting to show its age. The menu has also been largely unchanged in living memory and there are many echoes on it of the last millennium. Having said that, the ribeye steak was excellent. Vegetables are quite plain but they were well cooked. Wine is reasonably priced.

This is such a great pub and well deserves to be recognised in these very difficult times in hospitality. The Covid distancing etc & one way system was good. All the staff friendly and wearing visors. The menu was varied and very good prices. All cooked freshly and was delicious - can definitely recommend the rib eye steak and the cod, faultless ! Plenty of parking. Will definitely return.

My wife loves a decent steak and this pub is bar far the best( we've tried all the other local pubs too) They also serve Goachers beer so what more could you ask? (I've never had a duff pint in there so they obviously look after their cellar). The pub itself is very old and it could be argued that it's not been decorated inside since it was built but perhaps that adds to its charm. Great log fires in winter and its dog friendly too. Always book in advance as we get the impression , many times too, that they dont like too many people wanting to eat there at once! So, great food, fair prices and excellent ale. Enjoy!

Why do people go to a local country pub and moan about it. The pub has rustic charm and would lose it if it had a lick of paint etc. It is well looked after and all the facilities are clean. If I was local it would be my local pub, it is where many locals go for a beer and chat. I had a fantastic steak one of the best I have ever had. All to many country pubs have been updated and sanitised, lets hope it never happens to this pub.

Had dinner here tonight. Good but not spectacular starter. Smoked salmon. But will now become a regular by virtue of the main course and in the particular the ribeye steak. I’ve eaten out a lot, in fact, far too much, but I have never had a steak like this with the possible exception of steaks had in Ireland. Very, tasty, very large and cooked to perfection. Asked for it to be cooked medium rare and it was spot on.

My wife and I visited the Lord Raglan on September 22nd. We had made a booking and it was a good job we had. The pub is a small, rustic pub nestled in the Kent countryside. We were given a warm welcome and the friendly barman advised that we might want to order quickly, as a party of 10 had just arrived. There was an extensive menu on chalkboards and I quickly selected duck breast in orange sauce, my wife chose the house burger. Prices were extremely reasonable and when the food came it was very well presented and most enjoyable. We followed the main course with a home-made banoffee pie and cheese and biscuits. We thoroughly recommend this pub, though with its small size, advanced booking is advisable.

We have eaten at The Lord Raglan many times as it’s only 10 minutes from our home. We have always found the staff friendly and helpful. They have quite a varied menu with several fish dishes which are delicious, served with either salad or freshly cooked vegetables also beautiful local lamb chops, chicken curry, pork steaks served in a pepper sauce and several other delicious dishes. They are all served with beautifully cooked chips or new potatoes. The Pub is festooned with local hops giving it a very Kentish feel. Was taken to pub restaurant by friends, was very taken aback by how old fashioned it was from the shabby interior, poor toilets no frills service, a menu from a Delia Smith 1970cook book . A real blast from the not so good past, don’t know how in this day and age a pub like this can survive!. No menus , food served no flair no garnish, soggy over cooked veg , poor sweet selection, hand written bills , instant coffee ,real a pub time left behind. My partner and I recently visited this pub for the first and last time. 9/2/17 A planned date night for us, we were excited to have a great night out at a well reviewed country Pub. Upon arrival we walked into the bar/reception area, it was not particularly busy, we waited and waited and were not greeted. I got the attention of the barmaid and was told '' 1 minute '', a customer came round from the restaurant side who she proceed to serve first and ignored us. Eventually the barmaid managed to sacrifice a moment of her time, i asked if they had a table for 2 , she looked very uninterested, sighed and paused. She then told us that it would be a 45 minute wait for food, so no. We would never have minded waiting 45mins for freshly cooked food, but it was made apparent that we really wasn't welcome and our custom was not needed. I got the impression that the ''barmaid'' was most probably the owner of the establishment. If so i am surprised they have any custom. Unfortunately we did not get to taste the food as i hear this is good, so i can not comment on that. What i can say, is that we went to another country pub of similar stature no more than 5 miles away and was greeted with a big friendly Hello when we walked in and seated quickly. The food was great, the service friendly and efficient. Fortunately they rescued the evening from the disappointing unwelcoming and rude Lord Raglan.

I chose this pub after reading views on Trip Advisor and looking at their website amongst others, I was looking for something traditional food wise and not 'gastro' and the Raglan answered my wishes. Lots of great baguettes hot and cold served with a salad garnish, traditional pub foods such as Ham, egg and chips, chilli with rice etc., good selection of beers. All of this was confirmed by the number of locals there at lunchtime all sat around the bar. Décor basic , real log fires.

The staff seemed not too welcoming, possibly and we were somewhat worried. Also we had to chose the meals from a blackboard on the wall which we did not found too enticing. Well, we should have not worried! The steaks were generous and succulent, the lamb chop tasty and the meals on the whole were well presented and delicious. We loved it. We had a nice meal but there were not enough staff before 7pm. Only one person who was behind the bar. We had to wait to be served drinks and again to order our meal (at the bar, as required). The service got better when more staff came on duty. The meal was fine. When the plates were being cleared we were asked if everything was alright. I said nicely it was but I thought there was too much rocket in the salad (about 85%). I wasn't asking for a refund and had left a sizeable amount of rocket. Had read the reviews on Trip Advisor re the good food etc and decided to go here as a change from Indian restaurants.First impressions were that it was nice and warm and homely, with a nice 'dark' bar.I never look at the menu before I visit anywhere as I like to see what I fancy on the night. Was not disappointed with the menu and we all chose different dishes. The food was served fairly quickly for a busy Saturday night and it was all lovely. There was a good selection of wine on offer, and we had a very enjoyable evening eating and drinking and being merry! We used the Lord Raglan a lot over the year ending mid August 2015 when sadly our free lodgings became unavailable. The real ale was always excellent, the staff pleasant & efficient and the locals friendly but we never ate there though the food looked good.On Wednesday we had the opportunity to put right that omission so called in at 18.45 or so and were pleased to get a table - always best to book but I didn't as we had a couple of fall back options. The landlord instantly recognised us and the locals were still just as friendly so the first hour was full of good banter. The meal was excellent. A large bowl of mushrooms as a joint starter was followed by duck (me) and burger (the boss). My duck was good meat, well cooked and plenty of it whilst SWMBO opined (as a one time pub restaurant cook) that her burger was the best she'd ever had.Well done to Andrew and Annie for keeping this traditional pub the way it should be and not following the trend to gimmickry. If you're in the area give this place a try!

We have been to The Lord Raglan several times for a drink, en passant, but never eaten there before, so took advantage on a rare night out and booked on the day (lucky to get in) for an evening meal. We will definitely be back! Andrew and Annie are lovely hosts and nothing is too much trouble. In the winter it's not big so you would definitely need to book as it is popular. There is a great choice of starters and if you are not a big eater and can't choose you could easily just have 2 starters as the portions are very generous. Or if you like your puddings (and they have great home made ice cream), then you might not make it if you have a starter and a main! The food choices are what I would describe as upmarket pub - steak, burgers, fish, casseroles, etc, but all beautifully homemade - the burgers are yummy! Almost everything comes with a choice of new or chipped potatoes, veg or salad. We really liked the lack of canned music, there was just the gentle burble of people having conversations, (yes really!), the crackle of the fire and the occasional chink of glass - a real country pub atmosphere.

....and the hole in the car park mentioned in May, and familiar to all regulars for years and years, is suddenly gone, neatly tarmacked over. But don't expect extra parking space because Andrew and Annie are not 100% confident it won't sink again, so they have tactfully placed beautiful flowering tubs around it to keep cars away. There is plenty of parking up and down the lane, and in fact there are no ditches, just safe flat grass. We often eat here for a special treat, and I always choose the fantastic duck breast with port and orange sauce. I became a regular around 1986. One of the highlights of recent years is Onion Day on Bank Holiday Monday (today) and in spite of the relentless rain we have spent a hilarious day sheltering in an impromptu marquee and a couple of gazebos and celebrating everything to do with onions while intrepid Morris Men danced to the sound of a violin and a serpent. You have to visit this unusual pub if you are in the area. It is not as cliquey as some have suggested - it is just that the regulars have known each other and the bar staff for years and naturally talk to each other....just join in.

Lamb chops to rival any of the best restaurants you'll ever go to, friendly service, good selection of starters and mains. Menu doesn't change much but it doesn't have to as they know what they're good at, and very reasonably priced too, what more could you want?

Came here for lunch after visiting nearby Sissinghurst Castle. Food we had was very good and an overall enjoyable experience. The impression of a local came over strongly, which is by no means a bad thing and in fact quite the reverse. However, the barman could have been a bit more welcoming to offset the regulars who were blocking the bar and left me with a feeling I was fate crashing a private party. I don't expect to be the first person to say hello when I enter a pub, but when I do I don't expect to be greeted with silence either. The beer from Goachers, the excellent local brewery, was in good condition, but regrettably over chilled. Sorry to carp on about the negatives, but with a little more thought, this excellent pub could have achieved full marks from me

A super looking typical old English country pub in spite of having to park by the ditch down the road. A big hole in the car park reduced space, and seemed to be the place one would go to smoke. In its day as a pub it must have been great.Took a group of Dutch friends there to sample English food rather than beer. Be sure about it, if you eat here you are crammed into the restaurant space available.Very little room to move made an uncomfortable meal. The service was not the best, although the food was acceptable. Downer of the evening was being snapped at by a waitress "We don't do that" on asking for a sweetener for my coffee.Didn't quite make me ashamed of what Kent can offer its visitors, but it came close.

I've had a few lunches at the Raglan when visiting Boughton Monchelsea but recently I was taken for dinner there. The service was very good and as ever the food was tasty and just the right size portions. The atmosphere is very traditional 'pub' which I like and the prices are pretty reasonable.

I have been going to this Pub for many years. This is really what pub grub is all about. Nothing fancy just honest good value food and a reasonable wine list. Owner cooks the food and service is friendly. I love going to this Pub!

Consistently good pub grub. It remains a good old fashioned pub and is a good place to for a night out whether just couples or with a large group of family or friends.

My wife and I have been eating here for nigh on 10 years. Can feel a bit clicky, and still don't get anything more than a nod from the owner, despite having eaten here over 100 times - but don't let that put you off. The food is simple and unpretentious, and the menu does not change much (why not have a weekly special?) - but it is unbeatable for value, and always of a decent quality. Particular favourites have been the ice creams and cheesecake.

Ive eaten here quite a few times and popped in just for a beer as I'm local to it, it can at first visit feel a little clicky being a locals village pub, partly because its small so you feel all eyes on you, but get beyond this, push your way between the locals at the bar on stools with there Labradors etc and you will find all within welcoming and friendly. There's never any fear of trouble and the food is of an excellent quality indeed and proper home cooked on the premises ( no 3663 in sight) The menu is limited though but big enough to find something you'll like. There's usually some fish, vegetarian and always meat which occasionally is game such as pheasant, partridge and sometimes venison. It's always cooked to perfection and my wife swears that there shepherds pie is the best she has ever tasted, she was disappointed at our last visit as we went specifically for this and it wasn't on so she had lamb chops instead which were also excellent

Have been a few times to this Pub for both lunch and evening meal ( with a group). Most recent visit on 25th March. Not a very nice day and not many other customers. Two nice log fires which brought a nice warmth to the area. We had salmon very nicely cooked and lamb chops (3) again very enjoyable.Excellent chips in seperate bowl and good selection of veg also in seperate bowl. For dessert we had rhubarb crumble and chocolate and orange cheesecake both good. There is a good selection of beer including the excellent Goachers ( lowest alc).Have not been when the weather has been amenable but there appears to be a nice outdoor area with tables among fruit trees. One word of warning avoid the permanent puddle. It does have cones round it but not sure how deep it is). Would certainly go again.

Had not been to this 'pub' for a little while. Took some friends who continued to praise the food and atmosphere. We were delighted that the food was consistently good. We had 2 starters of smoked salmon. One of smoked venison. The main courses were duck, cod, stir fry beef and salmon. Then for sweet ( puddings) we had rhubarb crumble ( between two people) and bannoffe pie ( between two people). Absolutely delicious. Keep up the good work.

Visited this quintessentially English country pub at lunchtime on a cold February day. Warm welcome, and quickly served good beer (a fine selection of 'Real' ales) but the venue was cold to the extent that the bar-staff were wearing fleeces. There was an open fire complete with logs, but little heat, and a wood-burning stove giving off some heat, but with its doors firmly shut. As we were sitting by it, and felt that fleeces, jumpers and anoraks were not the most stylish way to eat lunch we asked if it could be opened so we could warm-up. A simple No was the reply. Having arranged to meet-up with friends there we persevered and ordered our meal hoping that the nice bar area would eventually warm up. It did not. The meal duly arrived with the server in a needed fleece - complete with a scarf, and wearing gloves! The food was good, both in taste and portion, and the menu was interesting with a lot of choice - possibly too much. Was it all really being prepared freshly for the small numbers eating that day, or was some pre-prepared by food-service contractors and simply bought-in? Our party made our own warmth, and enjoyed the meal, but it would have been nice if the building had been warm as well. Go in the summer, or wrap-up well!

Whilst this is my neighbourhood pub and restaurant they justify being better known. The wood fires and the beams and friendly staff make it worth the trip, but the food is really worth travelling miles for. All cooked on the premises, so the menu is simple and all the better for it. There is a lovely garden overlooking orchards and there are no juke boxes or video machine, just what a country pub should be like, even to the dogs being welcomed as warmly as the customers. Oh, and the beer is good too!

Wonderful atmosphere with warm log fires, much appreciated on a wet and miserable evening in November! I can also imagine sitting out on a warm Summer evening, enjoying a glass of wine or local beer before your meal was served. Food to die for. Plenty to choose from on an uncomplicated menu. Delicious starters. We can recommend the duck and salmon. You must save room for dessert, particularly the apple and quince crumble. Excellent service from friendly staff. Good value for money.

I've been bringing people here for over a decade and it never misses the mark! The bar is just lovely - roaring fire in winter, dog friendly, really GREAT beer, often festooned with hops, very pretty, very friendly, fantastic atmosphere. The food is always up to scratch - I can say hand on heart I have NEVER been disappointed. It is better than standard pub fare, often with seasonal foods, and has also got "alternatives" like stir fry or curry if you don't fancy the usual steak/lamb/duck type of item (The lamb chops are really very tasty indeed!). The prices are excellent and I always leave feeling I have had good value for what is on offer. It is an Idyllic country pub - great for taking friends!

We visited on a Saturday evening for a family birthday. The food (Cheese burger and cod & chips) was great and good service. Desserts were nice and big, sadly I didn’t get a picture before we dug in! Lovely classic pub atmosphere. Would be good if they had menus as you have to read off the board which an older guest found difficult, but ultimately we had a lovely meal. Will be returning.

Popped in for afternoon tea with a voucher. We come every year for my Birthday and this year was still fabulous. Service has got alot quicker and our servers looked after us asking if we wanted more coffee. The ham in the sandwichs was particularly delious and the warm scones were just yummy. Coffee from here is the best and yes I say that every year! Best of all you can have as many cup as you wanted. Shame it's a hours drive to get there but we will be back!
