The Lord Crewe Hotel & Restaurant in Northumberland

Our fist “eating out” experience post lockdown! We were lucky to get a table in their small garden at lunchtime. Two excellent sandwiches and their only draught beer (presumably reduced for the pandemic). Proper Covid-19 precautions, excellent and prompt service, food hot and tasty, no complaints!

Reasonable lunch venue. Good food & helpful waitress. Not outstanding but pleasant enough. Fish finger sandwich recommended.

We booked a table at the very last minute as we decided we just couldn’t be bothered to cook on holiday and we were able to get a table in the dog room as we had our dog with us. The food was ok (I didn’t have to make it so bonus!) but the menu was the Sunday lunch menu and some specials which is fine but didn’t make it feel like the dinner we were there to have. I should have checked beforehand so I wasn’t as disappointed; lesson learned. We were sat a little closer than I would have liked to the table behind us although all other COVID adjustments were there. The staff were great however it did take a long time after we had finished to be checked in on again (easily 25-30 minutes). I was hoping to order another drink and look at the desserts menu but by the time we finally grabbed the waitress’s attention the moment had passed and we decided on the bill instead. It wasn’t one of the best places I have been and probably wouldn’t head back but that might have been because I was expecting something a little different to what we had.

Had a great walk around castle and beaches with dog for a couple of hours, then a walk into village when my wife said shall we have a bite to eat. The Lord Crewe took our eye so sat down in the outside eating area to the left. Staff were doing table service and must say how speedy and well we were served. Really enjoyed the food and quick beer, couldn’t fault at all, would visit again

I was impressed by the precautions taken including the hand sanitiser by the door and serving one person at a time at the car. We had lunch outside. The table service was efficient and the food good. Recommended.

We had a tasty lunch, served by friendly staff. We were impressed with the way they were dealing with the regulations in relation to Covid in hospitality.

Visited for lunch. With the weather been lovely and sunny opted to sit out in the beer garden. Excellent distancing due to Covid19, table services and contact less as well. Went in to use the toilets very well organised. Hand sanitizers at the doorway. One door in and one door out. Markings on the floor for one way. I had tuna mayo on a roll which came with side salad and crisps, hubby had ham/cheese roll and we got a portion of chips between us, both very tasty and plenty of filling on the rolls. Very busy and very well organised. Friendly staff.

We visited twice this week and sat outside for a drink or three.They have got perfect measures in place to try and ensure customer safety.One way system works perfectly. Other similar premises could certainly learn how to deal with the current restrictions we have to live with. Well Done.

Booking in advance we were pleased to find the restaurant taking the covid compliance seriously. Masks were work by all staff members and compulsory for guests while walking too and from their tables. All tables were well spaced out and open windows helped with ventilation.The menu was rather brief but we chose the sea bream (£20) and rib-eye steak (£21). Other options for mains were limited to burgers, curries, sausage and mash, fish and chips and scampi. Our food was perfectly cooked and presented. After several meals in the surrounding area we found the Lord Crewe to provide both the best meals and most secure covid compliance.

Enjoyed a family meal here with the kids.The menu is great and offers a good selection - especially starters.The staff were friendly and attentive. The only improvement I would suggest would be to improve the atmosphere - we were sat In a small room with a few other diners and there was a lack of background noise to make it feel a bit more vibrant. That was my only minor negative.

called in this evening for a quick drink was curtly told by bar staff that facemasks had to be worn and refused service ! YET no one in the building (including bar staff) was wearing a mask! local pub for local people???? not wanting outside trade obviously will not be returning

We only popped in for a cup of tea as had somewhere else booked for lunch but would definitely return and have a meal here.I didn't realise how big the restaurant area was, there is 3 large rooms with lovely decor and tables spaced apart.Masks are expected to be worn when moving around the restaurant which is good practice and should be followed by other places too.

But then again everything in Bamburgh seems aimed at the well heeled. The Black Sheep Bitter was slightly too cold and slightly too expensive for my liking, but I suppose you ay for the location, which, overlooking the castle, is sensational.

Stayed in a cottage in Bamburgh the 1st to the 8th August. Each evening had a drink outside. Felt very safe. The hotel operate first class Covid procedures from being at the bar, a one way system and asking each evening for our data for track and trace. Well done!

Where to start ? Covid regulations strictly adhered to, exceptional standard of cleanliness, both in the bar areas and bedrooms. The staff are really friendly and efficient and the food is perfect. We could only stay one night whilst house hunting in the area and didn’t want to leave. Highly recommend.

Good choice of alcohol, seating area indoors and out. Nice decor inside and is a nice place to visit after walking from seahouses. Friendly bar staff and very professional. Will be visiting again.

We popped in for lunch today and though the children’s scampi and chips was ok, our fish and chips was overpriced and very disappointing.

Very glad always to get a table as a walk in. Good precautions for covid, track n trace, masks and 1 way system. Ok service. Quite pricey but expected in a tourist spot. Fish was superb, chips were fine. Good pint of local ale too.

We called in for a late lunch and our first pint since lock down. Lovely pub grub - the scampi was great and so were the goujons. Very friendly service and a nice pint.

Taking into account that Covid 19 ts causing people issues doesn't excuse one of the most uninspiring menus ever and the food was the type of massed produced fare that you get in a supermarket cafe! My wife orderd chicken curry where it was obvious that chicken had just been tossed into the other option on the menu which was a vegetable curry! My wife reluctantly made that choice because the rest of the menu was equally uninspiring. Cost was OK f we had got what is expected from a restaurant.

Out of season but recommended by Cottage and very light, friendly and good menu. We used twice as good vlue for money

Nice staff, nice space for eating and an enjoyable lunch. Certainly a place we wouldn’t mind staying in if we were wanting to stay in Bamburgh itself

We asked a regular Bamburgh diner friend where we should try on our first visit 'sans chien'. The Lord Crewe was their immediate reply. Great advice. Tempura King Prawn starter. Best I've ever had. Huge, fresh and perfectly battered. My wife's goats' cheese starter with roasted hazelnuts and beetroot chutney was just as good. My burger was epic, her penne with chilli, chorizo and chicken a close second. The ginger sponge was loaded with chunks of the stuff. If you like ginger, just do it. But take care, it's thermonuclear! Great meal and will go back very soon.

Spent the day in Bamburgh and visited here for lunch. Really good menu and I had the largest fish and chips I have ever had!! Well worth a visit after wandering round the castle and beaches.

Popped in twice in the 2 days we were there. There is a "doggie bar" & seating area. Ideal as the dog was with us. We ate both times & the food was really good. The service was friendly & efficient.

Dropped in yesterday, never tried any of these local places before but it was a very nice experience, good value, fresh and tasty and lovely places to sit, tables not too squashed in, lovely paintings on the wall, good food.My husband had duck breast salad and I had goats cheese salad. Very quick service, colourful and fresh salad, tasty and lots of flavour in the balsamic dressing (these little touches make it sometimes), and we shared halloumi fries....all just yum. Overall a delightful experience

Hidden gem, especially in winter, great food and fab lady behind the bar...sorry I missed her name....very fired ly and brought the drinks to the table for us...can’t recommend enough

Yes it does have a dog friendly area which is a bonus.. Popped in for a quick drink and a sandwich... The staff were really uninterested in life... Absolute poor service and attitude.. I did find £10 expensive for a beef sandwich.. It was fatty too....Clearly rely on the transiant tourists rather than retention of returning regulars...Average to say the least

great dog room, the staff are very welcoming and genuinely like dogs. Very pleasant decor. Very good menu something for everyone. The seafood curry was fantastic (the third time I've sampled it and it is always very tasty).

The Lord Crewe was the only place open for meals (other places were closed because it was out of the main tourist season). Sat in the small bar area on entering the premises. 4 of us had drinks and meals of; small fish-n-chips, crab sandwich, and 2 x steak sandwich (huge!) with chips. All very well presented, and amble sufficiency to fill our appetites. Reasonable prices .

Great ales and incredibly dog friendly. Highly recommend for beer and dog lovers if you are in the area.

Called in here on an off chance as they were advertising dog friendly, and dog friendly is what you get, separate areas for dogs so if you don’t like dogs you are not affected either as you have your own area too.

I came here on the evening of Friday 22nd November. Could not fault the food, the prawn cocktail and halloumi fries were incredible!!! Next time I’ll save room for dessert!

Went here with friends for evening meal, there was 12 of us altogether. Food totally delicious. My Husband and myself both had the Halibut served with new potatoes and tomatoes still on the vine served with a white wine cream sauce. Delicious, plenty of food on the plates, in fact none of our group had room for a desert. The staff very friendly and efficient. Definitely would recommend.

Four of us called in today for Sunday lunch . My wife has a dietary requirement of no gluten due to her Coeliacs disease. After checking the menu we found that traditional fish and chips was on the menu as a Gluten free option so we proceeded to order. At the point of ordering we were told that the GF option in fact was actually baked fish without the batter. Dissapointed but hungry my wife accepted this. However when the meal arrived it was not with the home cooked chips as described but with the worst looking French fries you could ever imagine. We asked the waitress why the French fries and the reply was that they had replaced the chips with French fries which they had cooked in the oven rather than cross contaminating with gluten in the fryer ( they were not even oven fries !! ). After expressing our dissapointment , the manager was reluctant to discount any of my wife’s meal. Do not go here if you have a gluten free requirement as they clearly do not understand that you are entitled to the same quality food as the rest of the paying customers.

Midpriced. Loved the local bangers and mash. Plenty. Local beer excellent. Staff friendly and attentive.

We had a very friendly welcome. Our twin bedded room was large with an excellent shower only bathroom. The decor in the hotel was very nice and our evening meal was lovely with plenty of choice. The breakfast was really good - presentation excellent

My wife and I were staying here for a weekend in late October.

Had it not been for the well over the top prices charged, we’d have been very happy with the meal.

Had a very pleasant lunch in here today.

We popped in here with friends + 2 dogs. There is a room specifically for dogs and their owners which was lovely. Food ordered and served very quickly. Dogs were looked after too. Food was great. Many other ‘dog friendly pubs’ could learn a lot from the Lord Crewe, we didn’t feel like second class citizens having to sit out in the cold but allowed to enjoy a relaxing meal in a lovely setting, well done.

We visited on a lunchtime with our dog, there was outside and lovely indoor seating they have a room inside which is just for people with dogs, it has a lovely homely atmosphere we ordered the beef and crab sandwiches with dirty fries the portions are very generous and the food was really nice, would highly recommend and we will definitely visit again.

Dog friendly area looked inviting so we decided to have lunch. GF choice looked good but was told on ordering GF battered Haddock, Chips & Mushy Peas that the Haddock was oven baked!

We only called in for coffee purely because we saw that it advertised a "dog only" room. Orders had to be placed at the bar in the main part of the hotel and when our drinks were brought down they were accompanied by biscuits for our dog. How's that for service (which, by the way, was also quick and brought by a friendly person who made a right fuss of our dog). Looking at the menu, there was a good choice and there were plenty of Gluten Free options. This pleased my wife, as she is Gluten Free. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to stay for a meal but next time we are in Bamburgh, we certainly will.

Popped into the Lord Crewe for drinks only... good flowing to tables around us looked lovely, but sadly didn’t get the chance to dine here. Lovely ambiance though.

Called in for the evening meal, their fish and chips are worth the trip alone. The fish served was the largest I have ever seen.

We were happy to dine here as we could bring our dog in. However, if you don’t have a dog there is a separate dinning area. Lovely seafood curry with scallops and fish and chips for hubby. Even the dog got a biscuit. Hubby came back from the bar with a really good IPA that was recommended. All in all a great end to a evening in Bamburgh.

We holiday Northumberland 3 times a year and the Lord Crewe is always one of lunch stops. Brilliantly dog friendly. The atmosphere in the ‘dogs only’ bar area is great. Such a change to find somewhere that dogs are welcome not just tolerated. If you don’t have a dog you can eat in the other ‘dog free’ zone. Tried the Beef stottie which was fresh and tasty, no gristly beef here ❤️ Husband had the fish finger sandwich which was fresh and tasty as always. Staff were friendly as always and generous with the dog biscuits... so a big woof from Otto. After a dog walk on the beach the Lord Crewe always delivers. We will be back.

My wife and I just returned from a short break in Northumberland and ate dinner at a different Bamburgh restaurant over three successive nights. Our verdict: We'd been advised that The Potted Lobster was very good and it didn't disappoint...at least an 8 out of 10; Our meals at the Victoria Hotel were filling but underwhelmingly ordinary and atmosphere was lacking...5 out of 10; Steak Friday at The Lord Crewe was a triumph...truly delicious and standout ribeye and chips, the best we've eaten for years and a solid 10!

Booked a table for 6 & our border terrier for a birthday dinner. Not disappointed. We had a lovely steak meal and the service was friendly and attentive. So pleased the restaurant was dog friendly. Everyone really enjoyed their steak and it was good value. Highly recommended.

Dropped in only for a coffee, but was impressed by their service and willingness to oblige with our needs.

We had a very poor crab sandwich here last week. The bread was dry, the lumps of crab were hard, the taste was unappealing and my friend had a big piece of shell in her sandwich! We left more than half of our food but received no discount. Such a pity the standard of food has gone down, it used to be great! I felt so embarrassed at recommending and booking this restaurant.

Had a meal in the dog friendly bar / restaurant.

On arriving at the pub for refreshments, we were asked to re- seat ourselves because we did not “ own a doggie “. This was in the main seating area. We pointed out that humans were more important than dogs, and that they paid the bill! Naturally we left without our drinks and sandwiches.

Took family to the Lord Crewe for lunch. Beef stottie was a nice idea let down by the beef being rather gristley. Crab sandwich tasty as was fish finger sandwich. Overall the lunch menu is pretty carb/bread heavy. The pub itself is presented well but I think the menu could be a bit more inspiring.

My mother in law was staying at the hotel so we decided to join for breakfast. Unfortunately we were placed at the end of the room, separated from other guests with chairs piled on top of each other....food was good but overall disappointing

We all had one course: a generous he,ping of three lamb cutlets, a sirloin and beef fillet medallions. The last mentioned were a little overdone but otherwise everything was first class. With drinks, coffees and a tip the bill was£105 for the three of us. Not cheap but good quality with efficient, friendly service.

Stopped off on our way home and were pleased to get a table without booking. The food was delicious and would definitely eat here again.

We came here eighteen months ago and had an amazing white bean chilli. What a difference now. Is nutrition part of chef training I wonder? Nobody would think to serve a carnivore a meal without a source of protein but it so often happens to vegetarians. For reference good sources of non animal based proteins include pulses, nuts and for those who are eat them cheese and eggs. Sorry to be so patronising but a veggie curry...however tasty...without chickpeas, lentils or similar, just isn't sufficient.

The Lord Crew Inn is situated in close proximity to Bamburgh Castle, which makes it the perfect place for a civilised summer shandy after exploring the Castle. The beer garden sits in the shadow of Bamburgh Castle, they have free wifi and the drinks are well priced. I regret not ordering dinner here, as the food that came out looked delicious. Picture this- you've had a fantastic day exploring the castle, poking around the beach and now you're tired. Lean back, sip a shandy and bask in the bliss of Bamburgh.

We walked from Seahouses to Bamburgh on a hot day and were ready for a drink & food. Sitting outside the pints went down well and then our ordered beef stotties arrived and filled our hungry stomachs. We would return.

Booked for Saturday night dinner and so pleased we did. Nice place, dog friendly room one of our jack russells is timid so we asked to be moved to a quieter table which was done without any problems. The food was very food quality, staff were pleasant even though they were rushed off their feet. Would recommend the chicken and chorizo pasta.

I can’t express enough how disappointed I was with the meal, service and ambience of Lord Crewe. The only saving grace was the drinks, which there had initially been confusion regarding due to lack of communication between bar staff.

Had chops, tempura vegetables and a burger. Nicely done, good service, nice contemporary space. Worth a try

We are currently staying in Bamburgh for the week and had already booked a table here for Sunday lunch, having eaten here twice before and found those times to be really good. When we went in the waitress, a middle-aged woman, was speaking to someone on the phone, but showed is to our table whilst still carrying on with her phone conversation. We thought that a bit unprofessional. We were shown to our table which was situated under the open sky-lights. We have food allergies, which we had told them of at the time of booking, and the same waitress went to check the menu with the chef. When she came back she had ticked loads off as not suitable or that they could be adapted, which was good, as we need to feel these things are taken seriously. This place does address allergies really well. My husband wanted to order the artichoke and goats cheese salad, but was told it was just a goats cheese salad, as they had run out of artichokes. She then went on to say that the smoked duck salad was actually chicken because they had run out of duck. Ok....good to know these things beforehand. It took a while for our starters to arrive and when they did they were really good. For mains my daughter, who has a nut allergy, had ordered the gourmet burger, having been assured it was suitable for her. This was supposed to be served in a brioche bun. When it finally arrived there was just a burger..no bun! We questioned why, as the waitress had told my daughter that the burger was ok for her. The waitress said the chef had decided the bun was not nut-free after all, which is fair enough, but If she had been told this beforehand she would not have ordered it and would have had something else. The waitress did offer to change her meal, but as we had already been waiting some time for our mains to arrive my daughter declined. The waitress then did give her this meal free of charge to make up for the lack of information. The rest of the food, when it finally was served, was delicious. We did find the manner of this particular waitress to be somewhat cold though. She was like a school teacher in the way she spoke to us and hardly broke into a smile. She was also quite dismissive towards our son at one point. He has autism and is really scared of wasps. When one flew in and was bothering us at the table, I mentioned to her that our son had autism and was scared of the wasp, but she did nothing and carried on clearing tables. When I said again that the wasp was worrying my son her reply was, 'well they don't bother me!'. By this time all 4 of us were out of our seats and had to vacate the area or our son would have started screaming, as the wap was very persistant. Then luckily the other waitress who was serving came in and she was brilliant. She got a tray and managed to get the wasp out of the dining room and we could resume our meal. They then closed the sky-lights and offered us another table, but since the wasp had been dealt with so well by the second waitress we decided to stay where we were. The first waitress really needs to be more empathic with guests, particularly when they have special needs. If someone is scared of a wasp in the dining area the response should be, 'is there anything I can do to sort the problem?', not 'well they don't bother me!'. She did not come across as being very good with people to be honest. We felt she thought we were a nuisance to be honest. Her attitude kind of marred our experience there and although the food was really nice, this sort of thing would put us off from coming back.

Passing through Bamburgh on the Northumberland Coastal route we decided not to go back to our hotel for a meal as we had not been impressed the previous evening. Walking through we came across the Lord Crewe and went in to ask if they did GLUTEN FREE.. They showed us a menu which was either GF or they could adapt.. Looked good so we booked dinner. Had Lamb cutlets with a Lemon Tart for sweet all GF. I wanted a smaller meal so they did Prawn Cocktail as a main course . Good portion of large prawns (double a standard) and 4 very large shell on. A bit messy but delicious .Salad of leaves ,tomato &cucumber; . I couldn't resist sticky ginger pudding and custard. We enjoyed the meal so much we went back the next day even though it was a 1 hour drive.

Day up the coast, didn't realise how busy the area would be, however managed to find a space at the Lord Crewe,

It was quite a surprise to find a modern interior to such a traditional building, it is clean and comfortable but rather lacks atmosphere.

Nice inside bar area usually busy- booking needed. Food posh pub grub! Wine expensive. Good but not great. Parking not easy. Staff polite and friendly. Dog friendly

At busy times you might want to book, it’s a popular venue. Good service and a decent menu ensured a thoroughly enjoyable meal with probably one of the nicest deserts I have had in a long time!

We first went in for morning coffee & were delighted to learn that there was a bar set aside so that customers are able to take dogs in with them. We reserved a table for dinner and enjoyed an amazing Sunday roast. Plenty of fresh vegetables & very tender sirloin which tasted simply amazing.

Good food and a relaxed atmosphere instantly set customers at ease. Good local produce and ales on offer to suit most tastes.

Came here last year and was very impressed. Alas this years visit was not so good. The venue is fine but we had to sit in the rear even though we booked in advance. The lamb dish was huge but the gravy seemed to taste of bistro! The chicken and chorizo linguine had a very thick sauce like a thick cream of tomato soup had been poured on it. Quite a lazy dish for the money. The venue is very smart and the staff good. I suppose keeping standards high in a busy venue is difficult and being in a tourist trap like Bamburgh it is easy to let standards slip. Saying that we will be back next year and yes we will probably try again.

Stopped here during our walk from Seahouses to Bamburgh and back. Wasnt going to eat but the lure of a fish finger sandwich and a plate of dirty fries was too much to turn down. The fish fingers were lightly battered and freshly fried in a brioche roll with mushy peas and tartare sauce. The dirty fries were covered in cheese and jalapenos and were just delicious. Really good beers and friendly staff. I want to go back!

We visited on 5 May for Sunday Lunch having booked the night before. Wow! Great service, superb presentation and food was amazing. £113 for 5 of us including drinks and deserts - clean plates all round.

Just popped in for a coffee but the ambience and the room is good, fresh produce on the menu will return!

Another eating establishment where I didn't have to share my space with a K9 . When I had a dog it stayed in the car while we ate what's changed ?

Managed to secure a table on a busy Friday evening. Pleasant staff. Good fish and chips. Reasonable wine.

After being disappointed the price of Bamburgh Castle, we went here for some food. The menu is good and the quantity was excellent; prices are reasonable, but overall it was good value. I had haddock and chips with mushy peas and the fish was really lovely. The Sunday roast was lamb or beef and there was no shortage of meat here! The bar staff wander around the sprawling pub with doggie treats (for dogs, not humans!) - a nice touch!!

We visited the restaurant for lunch whilst passing through Bamburgh we were a party of ten and occupied two tables in the ‘dog friendly’ area. We were treated with contempt at the bar when ordering our food and on returning to our table our friends were asked to move from their adjoining table to us so that a party with a dog could be accommodated.

The food here was great, hallomi fries yum, my fussy child wolfed down the soup and bread. The sandwich i had which was cheese and pickle was a delight and my husbands burger looked yummy, unfortunately, he didnt share! Theres a dog friendly section to the place which is good. It nice inside, modern, clean i would recommend.

We stopped off here after a nice walk along the beach. The Fish Finger sandwich was excellent. The batter was light and it was a nice touch being served in a brioche bun with mushy peas. Worked so well together. Will be back. Thank you!

Great meal nice atmosphere loved it - but a little bit pricey for us maybe we are out of touch but £75.00 for pub dinner for 2 was a surprise. Still nice place literally 3 mins walk from our cottage.

On the face appears to be a quaint country inn. It’s unfortunately let down by lack of atmosphere and contradictory decor. We had our drinks in the area to the right side of the bar, which was obviously a dining area. It seems more of a restaurant where you can have drinks; it lacks a nice cosy bar area in my opinion. The lighting was very bright, which contributed to the lack of atmosphere. Staff however were very nice, they couldn’t be faulted.

In a field of very high quality local competition, the Lord Crewe restaurant stands head and shoulders above the local competition for quality of freshly made food, value for money and excllent service. Many thanks - we will be back !

Stopped by for a drink at the end of our visit to Banburgh Castle ad beech. Friendly staff and the pub is well fitted out if rather new looking - not a traditional Northumberland hide away but pleasant.

A large group of us visited whilst staying in Bamburgh and all ordered the rib eye steaks and we were all very pleased with the quality of the meat. We really enjoyed our meals.

We stopped off for a spot of lunch, sheltering from the biting north wind and frequent showers on a Saturday in early May.

Just as good as we remembered from two years ago. One side of the premises is dog friendly and, being very popular, consequently needs to be booked. We had smoked duck and chicken liver pâté to start and fabulous lamb steaks and a spicy chicken linguine for out mains. The highlight for us is that we can eat great food, in a lovely stylish atmosphere with our two whippets. Highly recommended.

Booked for an evening meal; service was good and the restaurant had a lovely atmosphere. The fish and chips were gigantic as is usual for Northumberland but my 12 year old cleared his plate! The rib eye steak with peppercorn sauce was heavenly and cooked just how I wanted it.

Visited on 19th April, 4 adults 2 kids.

Had a light lunch as a family of three. We had our dog so made use of dog friendly room, which was spacious enough and clean. Service was friendly and efficient, so why only 3 stars? Value for money! There was nothing wrong with the food, but having eaten at the Craster Arms and Salt Water cafe in the same week, the Lord Crewe felt 10~15% over priced.

Stopped here for lunch after a chilly walk on Bamburgh beach. They have a section for customers with dogs which is why we went in. The food was very good. I had the seafood curry (scallops, monkfish & king prawns) and my husband had the hot beef stottie. Both dishes were good quality and very tasty. The craft beers were also excellent. There was also a good vegetarian choice on the menu.
