What a smashing hostelry. Cosy bar with happy chat, great menu and tasty home cooked food to order. Really enjoyed a very pleasant hour ( found purely by chance). We will definitely be back for more and longer. Thank you.

I arrived on my own with my dog after a walk along the river for Sunday lunch. What a fabulous lunch we both had as plenty to eat! Meat and a full selection of vegetables for a traditional Sunday. The service was attentive and comfortable especially as I had gone on my own. Value for money, loads of food and great service. Thank you.

Delightful place, run by the lovely Wendy. All 4 of us ordered Steak and Ale pie which was absolutely superb, oodles of good quality meat and gravy, huge home made chips + veg none of us could quite finish and sadly, simply no room for the delicious looking desserts. Would DEFINITELY eat here again ☺️

Excellent place camping and caravaning pitches near the river with lovely views. The pub is run by Wendy who is a very down to earth friendly lady. The food is absolutely EXCELLENT fish and chips, home made steak and ale pie, burgers etc all home made and very tasty. Service with a smile. A must to visit just for the food and pub,we live in York and visit when we can and we are never disappointed. Seating inside and out. Toilets are always lovely and clean.

The family time had a great time at the pub even in these unique times we thoroughly enjoyed our cheeky takeaway in the car. However this isn't our first cist, before the restrictions we loved to dine inside the pub has terrific family and cosy atmosphere

Visited for a Sunday lunch for my dad's b'day. Pre booked/ordered online due to covid. Seating was outside next to the river/lock, lovely watching the boats come and go. Lovely staff and even better food. A place to return to and recommend.

I am not rating the restaraunt / cafe / bar here. We are boater's and new to the River Ouse this past year. It is my understanding that the moorings on both side of the lock are under the management of the lockhouse and its owners. I am talking about the overnight moorings as opposed to the lock moorings. The moorings coming up the river from York are the grimest that we have encountered on any of the inland waterways. They are muddy and overgrown with undergrowth, totally negleted and dangerous. The fee for staying overnight is £6 and this gives you access to the toilets and shower rooms- which are appallingly filthy- and are in need of a visit from environmental health. On that basis I would not risk a visit to the restaurant - I dare wonder what state their kitchen is in. It is my understanding that this venture is Up for Sale, clearly the current owners have given up on it ! We have been into the bar on several occasions and have always had a friendly welcome, presumably from the present propreietors. The above is a great shame as the whole site is picturesque and worthy of a good deal of business, but this is not going to happen without a a significant capital investment programme of improvement, and enthusiasm.

A day off and driving back from York it was time for lunch. Headed to The Lockhouse Cafe and have to say had one of the best currys for many a long year, backed up with great friendly service and in terms of value, well, in London x2 and add a fiver for something not nearly as good. New boy Daz (ex RAF and one of Northern Ireland's finest), was the life and soul and could not have been friendlier. He quickly steered me to the Madras Curry on the Specials Board and how right he was to that. Two freshly cooked poppadoms with mango and yoghurt, two piping hot Nan Breads and then the curry. Beautifully presented, beef of quality and a kick that was bang on. Rice nailed. As somebody that has travelled the length and breath of India this was as good as it gets - Wendy take a bow. A filter coffee to wash it down (beer when I'm not driving next time) and job done. Oh, nearly forgot. £11 - what stunning value in a stunning setting overlooking the Ouse. I'll return, you should go and if you're on a boat I suggest you just moor up here at the Lockhouse all week as there's no finer traditional pub food this side of Amritsar. Respect

Breakfast finishes at 11.30 so we just missed it. Stayed for Sunday dinner. The staff advised they were busy but would try and fit us in. Drinks are ordered at the small bar, no fancy coffee machine so straight forward coffee, tea or alcoholic from the bar. There is an open fire so lovely and warm. We were lucky to secure a table. Sunday Lunch very nice, lots of food all well cooked. Some of the party had other items off menu, scamp and home made chips and hot beef sandwich with homemade chips. I cant have dairy so the chef accommodated butter free veg. The puddings sounded lovely but we didn't have any. Reasonably priced at £8.95 for Sunday lunch. Service fairly quick. There are seats outside when weather good. Probably best to book if visiting as requested by staff. Popular with walkers etc. Toilets and cafe clean, friendly service, car parking available. Footpath uneven so care to be taken. There was a door with no steps, however locked...I'm sure it could be opened if not able to manage steps. There are steps down to the toilet.

6 of us went for Xmas lunch and we all said it was the best around York. The service was great and the food was excellent all the vegetables were cooked to perfection, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, sprouts, carrots and turnip, red cabbage, peas, parsnips what a feast!!! We couldn't fault a single thing. We will definitely be going back.

A good friend is living on a boat next to the marina, we went to the lock house cafe, for a meal. It is certainly more than just a cafe, the menu is extensive and they have a license. They have different specials, on during the week, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Excellent value for money

Made to feel welcome from moment we arrived...the young very polite attentive staff were falling over them selves to be helpful, prob as was a steady day food literally arrived within minutes of us sitting down, having said that we would have been happy to wait or que for the Sunday lunch knowing what's in store when we go again ! outstanding meal from such a small pub ... Have to say reading a previous review there are NO signs saying no dogs ? The pub was full of all sorts of breeds, admittedly there is a sign asking people respectfully who are just walking dogs and not drinking or eating not to park there in the pubs private I guess very limited parking spaces as its a single track road down to the river it could spoil their trade. pleasant Sunday lunch sat next to the lock whatching the herons catch fish and the odd leaping salmon, what more could you ask for after a long week in the city..

From the minute you arrive the unwelcoming signs are abundant ! No parking, no dogs, no cycles here . Maybe if they build some more walks there would be room for some more rules ! After having a round of drinks for 4 people we asked if we could come back for a meal with our dogs and were told a strict No . Not a sorry we don't have dogs inside just a No. It's ok in Summer when no doubt they are busy but all winter we will pass here in our boat and take our business elsewhere where we are welcomes. Why does a basic country pub where 99% of business is their caravan park, walkers and boaters from the canal not accommodate dogs or have a friendly attitude to visitors? So luckily we had foid on our boat and the quiet pub lost out on 4 meals . No doubt they don't mind because they had the 2 locals supping their ale. Try the Downly Arms down the road. Dog friendly and customer friendly !

The Lockhouse is small, the restaurant area probably only seats about 20 people but it is clean, nicely decorated and has a fabulous view of the River Ouse. Food is very reasonably priced and good portions. I had nacho's topped with Chilli and Cheese to start and Chicken, Mushroom and Bacon pie for main. The chips were made by peeling potatoes and cutting them into strips, not frozen and not arty, farty even shaped oblongs - proper chips! The veg was made from fresh veg, cabbage, cauli, runner beans and carrot & swede mash - not a frozen pea in sight! I couldn't manage a pudding so I can't vouch for them. Sorry.

I was expecting more having read reviews. Sunday lunch. My Brother ordered a draughed Guiness having spied the tap, only to have the barmaid open a tin from the fridge. Someone elses used napkin under the table. Choice of four roasts which were generous in size. Can't really complain about the food if you just wanted a roast but it was nothing extroadinary. Oered two different puddings three times but still all got the same. I will be careful relying on reviews in future, I suppose rating is subjective and I must just expect more when someone gives 5 stars.

A beautiful lockhouse overlooking the river Ouse. Very picturesque setting with a lovely, friendly atmosphere and helpful staff. The menu has plenty of choice for all tastes and appetites and the food we have had there is always consistently good and we have used the takeaway option, too which has been a great success. The food offered is freshly cooked to order and is excellent value for money. You certainly won't leave hungry! Try the cottage pie.

We have just called here for lunch, we had a fish pie and fish and chips. we were given the choice of cod or haddock, with or without skin and mushy peas or curry. I chose haddock and peas. we ordered and sat outside next to the lock. our meals arrived and were piping hot the fish was the full length of the plate with a nice crisp batter and no grease the fish pie was a good size with a nice portion of fresh vegetables we had a drink each and all for less than £20 we have paid a lot more for this quality of food and service.

Good old fashioned pub/cafe. Only serve Sunday lunch on Sunday, which included choice of chicken, lamb and beef. There was also a choice of hot meat sandwich with or without chips. Chips were proper fried chips! Delicious! Sat outside overlooking lock, canal, weir and river. Seemed really popular with locals and regular campers. Access is via a single track.

Lovely! The old lock houses converted into a bar and restaurant / cafe. Recently been refurbished due to the floods over Christmas and clean and fresh inside. Dosnt look like anything more than a house from outside and you have to drive off the main road down into the lock campsite carpark area but well worth the journey. Recommended to us and couldn't fault the value, steak and chips for £9.99, chicken parmesan was delicious and only £8.50. really good home cooked food and very reasonable prices. took the kids and there was kids menu and very welcoming with our giggling, messy lot! Right on the tow path and the kids loved looking at the locks and gates etc.

Quality is good. However, the portion sizes have massively decreased, the Parmesan for example is half the size it used to be and is very very thin. Chips are only provided to share between the table, so this is a clear way of trying to save money. The Bay Horse always used to be consistently good when booking a large group. Unfortunately , this will be the last time I visit until they sort out their portion sizes for the price they charge I ordered and paid for drinks at the bar which cost me £40. 2 pints of Pepsi 2 J20 2 sparkling water 2 half pints of lemonade 1 lime and soda 2 lattes

A warm welcome for all your doggies here at the Fika Room cafe! We have visited several times now with our rather large Bernese Mountain Dog and we are always greeted warmly and have been happy with the staff, the cakes, the drinks and the way that dogs are accepted and welcomed indoors. The staff have always been chatty and very pleasant. Well done! We will be back!

We called on spec today for a quick lunch prior to visiting friends in the area. The welcome was friendly. Staff and customers were most welcoming to our two little dogs. How nice this was. The food was most acceptable . Decent-sized portions and a lovely selection of seasonal vegetables. Pity not all pubs are so accommodating.
