The Lock Inn Cafe in Wiltshire

Disorganised. Tables being sat and told of table service but then no one taking orders or giving out menus. Tables were putting hands up to catch the eyes of servers. When people were going in to order due to waiting so long, a server was quite rude. Our drinks came 20 minutes before food. Our order came and both were wrong. Then had to wait another 15 minutes to correct the order. When we did eat, it was ok but not worth the money,

Went out for a monthly meal with my Mothet. We have been here before and it was fantastic but unfortunately today's visit was not. I am celiac so have to jave gluten free food. I ordered the Breakfast and most of it wad stone cold !!!! My gluten free bread was like a brick, fried egg was sont cold along side the hashbrowns and mushrooms where also cold and dripping with oil and the bacon was cold and not smocked ( as the menu stated)The only two things that stayed hot where the beans ( in a pot) and sasauges. I am now not feeling very well due to this. My mother ordered the Lasagne with chips and coleslaw. The pit of coleslaw was extremely watery and the chips where like a brick, also stone cold ( like they have been sat in the fryer basket doing nothing) and the Lasagne , the meat in the middle was pink. The service was not great. Ordering ny gluten free food I got asked if I wanted black pudding ( not gluten free), pointed this out. This is small but not the point. My mother and myself had two pints of diet coke and tasted like the postman had gone. We had to go and order our food at the till and the waiter did not return and had no check backs to see how the food was. When getting cutlery on the table( cutlery and napkins in a glass) looking in the glass the napkins had a black like mouldy stain in the corner so we used the other tables cutlery and they where dirty. Upon leaving the venue, we where seen by staff but no comment as we walked back through the doors to leave. No thank you or good by and have a nice day , witch is just polite as a customer leaves but we had nothing. I understand people are busy and have a job to do, but check backs on food is a must, customer service is a must and being polite also. Unfortunately to to this we will not be returning to the venue

Used to come here all the time. Great location and food was great. Sadly the new owners don't come up to par. Price increase but quality and quantity have gone.

Called in here and sat outside undercover at a wooden table and chairs amongst lovely hanging baskets watching the canal boats and kayaks. There was plenty on the menu - simple honest nothing fancy. The Mac cheese with bacon and onions was enormous! The other half had chicken schnitzel - it was nice but would be better with a sauce. There were dog bowls and dog treats. I don’t know why folks moaning about paying up front! Would come back again .. certainly left full!

This place used to be a great spot to stop by the canal for both food or just a drink. Unfortunately the menu leaves a lot to be desired now. The outside used to have lovely big wooden benches and now it’s just cheap plastic tables and chairs like you would have found in an old greasy spoon. I’m not sure if I will go back or not.

Nice food, lovely location. Each and every one of the staff were polite, pleasant and attentive. They even gave our dog 2 sausages they had left over from breakfast. Definitely recommend

The person taking our order was friendly, and our order was taken promptly. My friend and I were then surprised when the waitress came back and asked for payment before we had our meals! When we voiced our surprise, we were told, "That's the way we do it." Not exactly helpful. When our meals arrived, we had ordered chicken schnitzel. We were underwhelmed. The Schnitzel was not as expected, freshly cooked, but more like a frozen breadcrumbed chicken burger. Another diner sitting behind us had ordered the same meal and, like us, had expected a freshly cooked schnitzel. We decided not to say anything. After all, we'd already paid for our meals and couldn't be bothered with the hassle not wanting the meal would cause!! The two meals and a Pepsi and 7 Up cost £36. People reading this review may be of the opinion that's not expensive, but it was for the poor quality of food served. We won't go back.

Went here for breakfast at the end of our celebration weekend in the area. My wife is Coeliac and the menu offered a lot of choice, although we were prepared for a few options missing as it was a Monday morning. Needn't have worried. We were 11 and having sat outside right alongside the canal we were served by a lovely waiter and his trusty ipad. The menu choice is extensive to start with, but when you are offered your fried eggs as soft or hard, your tomatoes tinned or fresh and your sausage pork or smoked it goes to another level. Admittedly it wasn't overly busy, but the food came in a very acceptable time and despite the number of us it was spot on. No incorrect orders, no missing items. The Coeliac choice was very good and all available. I liked that you paid when you ordered as it saves that interminable wait at the end for the bill etc. Our waiter was well armed with his trusty ipad, a card machine and a great personality coupled with a huge knowledge of the menu choices. No complaints at all from us and would definitely recommend.

Absolutely first class. All of the staff were incredibly polite and friendly, and the food was excellent. If ever I am in the area again I will definitely give this place a visit.

We booked the potting shed well in advance, specifically so we could have a private space. When we arrived, we were told somebody else was in it and asked whether we could "just sit somewhere else". When we argued the fact that we had booked two weeks ago, the extremely rude manager told us that the people in it had booked before us. When I asked to see their booking, she said she would show me later as she was "busy serving other customers". The kind waitress helped us find an alternative shed, and explained that there had been a mix up with bookings, the other group had booked that shed but been placed in ours. If the manager had just been honest about this and apologetic (which she wasn't at all) we would have understood. To top it off, my drink was really bad.

Haven’t visited here for a year or so. Staff - lots of them!- very friendly. However I had the worst coffee ever! Bitter, almost like the coffee you get from a vending machine - certainly not freshly brewed. Visited the toilets whilst there - awful. One was flooded with no loo paper / floor was awash. The other one was blocked. Advised the staff. There are lots of alternatives in the area so doubt we will be visiting again. Such a shame as it used to be such a great place to eat & drink.

It is a lovely location but that's about it. The whole place is dirty the drinks are terrible, watery hot chocolate and bitter coffee. We waited 40 minutes for two breakfast sandwiches both served on stale, rock hard bread one had an item missing which they did bring out quickly but everything was flavourless and the bacon was barely cooked.

This is a great place for lunch outside on a sunny day, with plenty of space inside when it’s cold or wet. We enjoyed the generous all day breakfast and tasty breakfast ciabattas, sitting alongside the canal watching narrow boats navigating the lock. The food, service, and prices were all as good as the view!

Not as good as we remembered! The place seemed a little run down with about 15 different staff members on. The waiter tried to take our drinks & food before we had even finished! The food was nice with big portion sizes but the table cloth was dirty when we arrived. They did give us extra chips as there was a little wait for food (which they told us about when we ordered) and our 2 children were getting abit restless. We had to pay for our food when we ordered which was fine but we had no reciept or anything, we were just told the amount we had to pay. Such a shame as this used to be one of our favourite places to eat when coming to Bradford on Avon.

We have been coming here for 15 years. Sadly the place seems more run down each time. It has a lot of very young staff who are trying to do their best, but they seem to lack leadership in my opinion. Our waitress put the menus down on our table carefully avoiding the wet patches and lump of something chewed looking. She did wipe the table over when i asked her to. There was some food and mayo flicked on the front napkin in the glass on the table. There was a butter pat and dirty napkins on the floor by our table for the whole visit, various staff members trod on them but didn't pick them up. We ordered 2 teas, one of the cups had a hair in it and the other had a brown ring in it. The toilets are dingy and horrible, one of the toilets didn't have a seat! The tap has been dripping for as long as I can remember (years). The whole cafe looks like it needs fumigation. The food was OK tasting but sadly we won't be returning as the state of the place put us off, I wouldn't like to think what the hidden parts look like! It really feels like no one really cares about the place anymore, it's a real shame as its a lovely location.

I found it strange that we were asked to pay before our food was served, (Dubious practise that should have rang the alarm bells) I soon discovered why, My wife and I ordered Chicken Masala. What ever we were served, it wasn't like any Masala, I have ever eaten before. Coffee that tasted much like I would imagine heated washing up water would. Now we realised why they took our money before this hideous food was served. The assault on our digestive system left us both ill and regretting the moment we set foot in the pace. Never again.

Very disappointed. This used to be a superb place to eat, but today’s serving of Chicken Tika Masala was less than delicious. It looked as though it had been mixed with sour milk or cream - tasted OK but just that: OK. Nothing Special…and we had to wait a further 5 minutes for the mango chutney to be delivered to our table. The staff were friendly and helpful - at least that was a saving grace - but suggest they change their chef.

Delicious hearty breakfast enjoyed by the whole family. The build your own breakfast is a great idea and full of options.

Dropped in for lunch. Lite bites were substantial - excellent nachos, baked potato with beans and cheese. Think the mains are likely to be equally generous. Loved eating in a canal boat overlooking the canal.

A lovely Mothers Day lunchtime with family , we enjoyed all our meals.. I had fish & chips & staff were all polite & friendly thankyou ,a really nice afternoon

This is a jewel of a find. Fantastically cooked food, great quality ingredients in a quirky original cafe with welcoming staff who know who how to look after their customers. I have just read the last two reviews prior to posting this, and in my opinion, the last one in particular must be malicious as it bears no relationship whatsoever to what we observed and experienced today on 20.2.24. We shared Mac and cheese with the additional option of crispy bacon and onions, and steak ciabatta sandwich. The mac n cheese was the best I have ever tasted and a very generous portion. Lots of sauce, very cheesy and the bacon on the top was tasty and delicious.! The steak sandwich was also the best we have ever had. It was full of beautifully cooked great quality steak and fried onions. Both dishes were under £10, which was amazing value for money made even more impressive by the quality of ingredients. One of the best lunches we have eaten out in a very long time. The quirky, decoration and environment of the café was a bonus, as was the great music being subtly played in the background.

Arrived well before lunch service ended, but was told couldn’t order from the lunch menu as the chef had to get away early So ordered from the snack menu - a hot dog and chips Had to take it back twice - first for mould on the hot dog bun (was told it shouldn’t be mouldy as had just come out the freezer - seriously!! The bakery 200yds away in sainsburys was flogging the freshest hot dog buns I’d ever seen) - second for cold hot dog, to be fair they did offer to replace the hot dog, but having waited 30 minutes for it, just asked them to chuck it in the microwave for 2 minutes, so we could get something it eat and then leave During the 2 trips to return the food , noticed plenty of staff in the kitchen - presumably they were only qualified to cook hot dog and chips from the freezer and not gammon and chips from the freezer 🤣 Having said all of the above, the staff weren’t rude, so maybe the place was just having an off day But next time we’re in B-U-A we’ll go to the pub opposite instead

Delightful cafe set on the canalside. Lovely coffee and tea with friendly staff. Warm and cosy with some interesting artefacts. Well recommended.

I’ve been here twice since new owners. And both times been disappointed with the food. £9 for a plain tuna ciabatta spread with MARGARINE not butter, just wrong in my opinion. I think it could also come with a garnish just to make up paying £9. I had the sausage and mash. We’ll just the sausage as the mash was also lathered in margarine so that was all you could taste. The chunky chips anemic and not cooked enough so still hard and not enjoyable. The service and onion rings were very good tho :) I will always return to this place as I am local however only for drinks, shame as this was a nice place to go with family

The wait for hot food was too long so we declined the wait and instead chose Coffee/Tea and cake. The cake was fine but the Coffee/Tea had an odd taste. We believe ot was a processed milk that is used in their Coffee machine; it did not look or smell like 'Fresh Milk' and we thought it was a 'Longlife' milk. We will NOT be returning to a cafe we had been to on several previous occasions as a result of this.

We visited the lock inn a couple of Saturdays ago with our grandson, we were greeted at the door by a friendly Team, we ordered our food & drinks promptly & our drinks came almost straight away, we didn’t wait long for our food either! The food was great & we ate it all. The staff are a credit to the place, they were so polite & helpful! It’s like they’d actually been taught about service! Something lacking in most places, they deserve recognition but sadly we didn’t get names, in particular a young man that was so kind to our Grandson! He brought him a dinosaur to play with as he had printed dinosaurs on his clothing, he’s a big credit to you!

A quick stop off and look around this quaint little town. Decided to stay for a spot of lunch, what an amazing place. Being a vegetarian I don’t normally get much choice but here they really cater for everyone. Staff were polite and friendly and portions were large my wife and I both struggled to eat it all, but we did manage it. Excellent Value.

I want to be positive, but I'm sorry I can't.. Place was grubby, cutlery in pint glasses that were dirty Worst coffee I have EVER had Long wait for food (4 other customers on site) Food came with missing items (they did rectify when I told them) Food luke warm Tasted cheap and I genuinely struggled to eat it I felt sad Very young staff who seemed very underconfident, and appeared to be lacking leadership One young man who cleared my plate was lovely though, wish I had got his name as he deserves a mention as he was really trying in his job and if I ran a local business I'd have offered him a job. He clearly cared. I've known this business since the day it opened. I just wish they could improve some basics. Please buy a proper coffee machine. I can't stress enough how awful the coffee was, like dirty dish water, anything would have been better. I paid 3.25 for it and I wanted to complain but it wasn't the teenagers fault, and could see no authorative worker to explain this. Deep clean needed. Replace the chipped crockery. Get a strong team leader.

We stopped for coffees on our walk along the Kennet & Avon canal. The setting is perfect with open and covered areas with canalside seating and plenty of room inside too. The food menu looked very tempting and we would definitely recommend a visit.

We have visited The Lock Inn many times over the last 20 years, this was the worst. Non of the staff appeared to be over the age of 18 which I wouldn't have a problem with if they were confident in what they were doing. The furniture was tacky and worn. I am sure the sticky back plastic on the tables in the barge was the original from when we first used to take our- (now adult ) children.It certainly didn't smell, or look like anything had been changed. The menus were dirty and worn with limited options. We were able to choose a table and after waiting to be served we were eventually told its was at least a 40 minuet wait for breakfast! The Inn was only about a third full...why the wait!!!!? We left! Not likely to go again. Even if it was just an 'off day', they couldn't recoup it enough to make me want to experience that again!

My husband and I stopped here for an all day breakfast . sat by the canal a lovely setting. The food was really good but the whole experience was excellent due to the staff - all young but they have got customer service to perfection - well done - attentive, polite and friendly without being overbearing .
