The Lock Inn in Highland

We went here on the last night of our engagement trip away and really enjoyed our visit. I had the venison burger and my partner had the beef burger, both were great and the chips were amazing. We also shared garlic bread which was mouthwatering and full of flavour. Was great to see the pub so busy on a Saturday night with all the locals, although it’s nothing we aren’t used to coming from Dundee! There was also live music with fiddles etc which was a nice touch. Staff were really nice when we went in to enquire about a few things during the day, come night time you could tell they were exhausted which is to be expected due to how busy this pub is, and I can sympathise completely with them working in a pub myself. So, I would take all the reviews from tourists about staff’s bad attitude lightly, and their issues with ordering at the bar. Welcome to Scotland, that’s how things work here. The only downside is that the pub itself is quite small. Overall, brilliant food and standard service. However, I would say if you’re looking for table service and staff with a fake smile plastered on their face, then this isn’t the place for you.

Great little pub on the cally canal. Went for a walk with the dogs and then pop in for soke food afterwards. Had the homemade curry partner ordered the burger. Was delicious. Highly worth a visit if in the area. You'll not be disappointed.

We had the worst experience in this restaurant, really bad service, we wait for 15 min, the lady clean the table next to us and ignore us all the time. The guy at the bar couldn't say to us that we need to order at the bar. It was really a bad experience at this place. We really enjoy our trip to Scotland highlights, but this stop,really upset us.

I was a bit dissappinted with this pub. It has lost the atmosphere it used to have a few years back and the menu is very expensive. In fact, it is the first place I have ever chosen not to order food because it is over priced. Great location but lost its homely pub feel.

Es una pena que un pueblo tan bonito cuide tan poco a la gente que vamos a disfrutar de él y su comida. Parece que como vamos los turistas en tour contratado, tenemos que comer a la fuerza dentro del pueblo, y tuvimos muy mala suerte en que había otras recomendaciones cerradas. La comida estuvo repitiéndose en nuestro estómago todo el día. El sitio estaba como sucio y las dos personas que estaban estaban trabajando tenían tan pocas ganas de hacerlo, que estábamos deseando que el autobús nos recogiese para volver.

DO NOT GO HERE!!!! Had something to eat in here today (1st Dec 2023) This place has ZERO atmosphere, staff didn't really engage and looked miserable. Place was a bit dirty. The fish and chips we had to send back because it was dry and tasteless. You would think being near a fishing area that it would have been fresh...NO, it had been heated up. I really should have read the reviews before going in there, and then I never would have entered the place. AVOID!!!!

After road-tripping through the Highlands for days we were underwhelmed at the overall food quality of various pubs and restaurants, until finally finding this gem. Very high quality food, fair prices and friendly service. Can't recommend this place enough.

Food is good, sticky toffee pudding excellent. Decor is all new but a little disjointed - red uplighters are a bit odd too. Comfortable and spacious. Great service.

One of the best homemade steak pies I've ever tasted. Big succulent chunks of tasty beef in a really nice gravy. Even the puff pastry is better than most other places.

Brilliant pub with even better food. Portion sizes are gigantic. We thoroughly enjoyed their fish and chips and homemade steak pie. Soup was fantastic too. Service is quick. Ambiance is nice. Typical pub. Decently priced for the portion sizes. Food tasted fresh.

Recommend to have lunch very cosy clean pub however the staff could not have been less interested if they tried, I think bar person mission was to see if she could serve all of us without speaking, or look at us. Drink & lunch average. When I asked for Wi-Fi code a slate with it code was thrown at me. Very disappointing when people really having to think to where to spend their money. All the group from our tour said they experienced the same.

Great little pub to stop into for lunch in Fort Augustus. Really cosy, friendly staff and the food is great! Really recommend the macaroni cheese.

In a town with limited dining options, this was recommended as being okay, which it was. Limited menu due to limited staff, limited seating, you get the idea. Ordering at the counter was not the burden some reviewers felt, although carrying drinks upstairs added an element of excitement. Food was brought to our tables. It wasn’t bad, nor was it particularly memorable.

We went for lunch after the steak pie being recommended to us. We are a family of 4, one of whom is under 1. When we walked in the staff did not welcome us and almost felt being there was spoiling their day. The food was nice, portion sizes were good but the service was just awful. I needed to change the baby's nappy and was told "don't have changing facilities, you'll need to go to the public toilets across the town". I'm sorry but if you offer high chairs and have room in the toilets, which they did, provide a change mat. Could be so much better with welcoming and friendly staff.

We wanted a hot lunch on a cold day walking round fort Augustus. The Lock Inn did not disappoint. It served up tasty and hearty meals at very reasonable prices. The service was friendly and surprisingly quick, especially given how busy it was.

A little pub on the loch. Ordered the fish and chips. A large fish haddock. When I lifted it up oil was dripping from it. The mac and cheese was also ordered and it is what it is.

We were going to eat here but it was always fully booked, we did have a drink whilst waiting on our table at Beaufort pizza up the road from here, the food looked nice, but, the young lad running the bar was extremely rude to customers popping in looking for a for a table, not once but several times, he’s needs customer service lessons or a new vocation, we’re Scottish and assume we’re saved from his acid tongue, but the Americans Chinese and various other visitors will think we are all rude!!!

Lovely family friendly little pub. Had lunch here on 2 occasions (had to go back a second time as my Son enjoyed the macaroni cheese so much!). Fish and chips was excellent too. Sits right next to the Lock where you can watch the boats passing through if you're lucky enough to be there when that happens. Very clean, great service, great food and nice atmosphere. I would definitely recommend coming ere for food.

We had lunch here after a Loch Ness cruise. I ordered the fish and chips. The presentation was nice but the taste was so-so. The fried fish piece was huge but the serving was mostly the fried batter part, which was crisp but way too greasy. No seasoning at all in the batter. The chips were not that tasty. The fish came with a small cup of tartar sauce. One of my party asked for a second tartar sauce serving and had to pay 50 pence for it. For a meal that was £18 pounds, that’s ridiculous. It’s a no repeat for me.

Enjoyed authentic food at this charming place. The coffee and chips were especially delightful, providing an old-world ambiance. Good service added to the experience.

A lovely little pub on the quiet, rainy afternoon we visited. Service was pleasant and efficient and the beer was well kept too. The Fish and chips were very enjoyable and the vegan Chickpea and Sweet Potato curry, though a staple vegan option in many pubs, was much better here than other places I've had it. It wasn't blow-your-head off spicy but there was definitely a subtle little kick to it that I've not tasted elsewhere! Oh and I also had a start of tomatoes on bruschetta but I ate it so quickly there wasn't time for a photo! Definitely recommend The Lock Inn

This place was an accidental find that turned out being utterly amazing. Sit downstairs for a pub atmosphere, or take your food upstairs for a quiet, coastal vibe and a great view of the Caledonian Canal. We had the Haggis, the Cullen Skink, and the steak meat pie and all were absolutely perfect. The Bellhaven Saltire Lager was a crisp and easy beer to accompany a great lunch! Would highly recommend this gem!

Great place to have a coffee and watch the canal boats go through the locks

Located right on the canal in town was another great lunch find. Cold beer and great meat pies with super friendly service.

Great lunch at the Lock Inn Grilled goat cheese salad starter one of the best things we ate over 2 weeks in Scotland. Also fried haddock sandwich was the best fried fish I had during our trip. Get there early as it fills up fast!!

This place is lovely inside, and I really do not like giving bad reviews. I had Macroini cheese which was lovely and inside the venue is lovely, so I really hope the owners can deal with the below. However on holiday we would have gone there more accept for the barman who clearly did not want to work there or make pleasant small talk. I know we were tourists and this is a tourist spot and staff tire of it . However if it had not been for the unfriendliness 3 times we would have spent more money there but even with other venues shut. We decided to stay in our cottage and that is saying a lot from people I was staying with as we like a evening out.

Vegan options in Fort augustus worth trying - luckily we found this nice place to have dinner (when everything else was closed and was only 8pm lol) - loved the atmosphere and the food

Das Essen (Mac&Cheese, Süßkartoffelcurry) war in Ordnung. Unten war leider kein Platz mehr, weshalb wir nach oben geschickt wurde. Dort ist leider wenig „Pub-Atmosphäre“ bzw. überhaupt Atmosphäre, weshalb wir direkt nach dem Essen wieder gegangen sind.

Great pub above the locks. Chicken tiki marsala, and soup was great but the mac-n-cheese was the best we've ever had!! Highly recommend!!

Leider hatte der Service keinerlei Interesse an den Gästen. Schade, denn damit steht und fällt dass Wohlfühlen. Die Aussicht auf die Schleusen ist super, aber mehr positives hab ich heute leider nicht.

Macaronis were good (but a but heavy with the fries 😀) Service is okay but very quick - convenient for our boat tour just after lunch.

Surprisingly good little pub. One local cask beer on. Excellent steak pie and a friendly atmosphere from staff and locals. A pub where you can buy a beer and stand at the bar to drink it is a good thing! Amidst the tourist traps of Fort Augustus there is a decent pub :)

I did expect much of this pub, because of the location. Its a beautiful spot, but I was dissapointed when I was served ale in a plastic glass. I can understand the use of plastic glasses at big festivals and such. But this is a nice little countryside pub with a few benches outside. I prefer drinking craft ale from a regular beerglass.

Delicious chickpea burger (vegan). Tastier than most we have tried in the UK and the US. Chicken tikka is also pretty decent. Warm good and prompt customer service in a very nice spot. Highly recommend when traveling in Scottish highlands

Einer der beiden Pubs in Fort Augustus. Unten normale Pub-Einrichtung, oben in skandinavischem Stil. Zwei engagierte junge Frauen hinter der Bar - freundlich und effizient. Das regionale Lager war eine willkommene Erfrischung - sehr lecker!. Alkoholfreies Bier gibt es auch, aber nur aus kleinen Flaschen. Sehr leckerer Kaffee. Das Essen war gut bis sehr gut, aber nicht ganz so gut wie im "Bothy" nebenan.

Cute little pub by Loch Ness. Amazing steak pie. It was very well seasoned. Great flavor!! Meat was quite tender. Veggies steamed on the side and served with fries. My friend got the fish and chips, which was a big serving and was also really good. Got there around 1215 and had our food within 10ish minutes.

This is located right near the canal but we found the restaurant dirty and the wait staff exhausted. You have to order from the bar but no one tells you that upfront. I had soup and my friends shared a burger that was undercooked and...

We came here for some pub grub, the menu didn't offer alot of options, but I guess thats because they nail down how to cook the few options fantastically. I had the steak pie and chips, it was huge, and the Chucks of steak inside the pie were massive. The steak to pie ratio was perfect. The price seem a little steep, but we are in the Highlands so it's expected. Staff behind the bar were on their phones and didn't realise I was standing there waiting to order.

We were staying at the Highland Club for the 2nd year in a row and went back to the Lock Inn several times. Really good staff, great Bellhaven, fantastic views, we loved it. Thanks to the staff. David, Tina and Jacob

Grossly overpriced for the bruschetto, 3inch piece of a baguette sliced into two slices, 4 cherry tomatoes sliced and a drizzle of olive oil and no hint of garlic or any fresh basil, tasteless for the cost of £8.95. My husband mentioned to the waiter how dissapointing and overpriced it was but he couldn't have cared less.

Stopped for a meal on our canal travels. Good food and service was quick and friendly. Accomodating with kids fussy food requests as well. We didn't book but got a table no problems.
