The Lion Pub with Rooms in Amber Valley

Stayed for 2 nights in room 2 and I got to say I might as well tried sleeping beside the road there is nothing to deture road noise sleeping is near on impossible in that room it's a loverly pub and service from staff was polite and to the point staying in that room has given me a new perspective on why homeless people are so grumpy sleeping outside.

I have been using the Lion for 12 years now. Its just what I want for a business trip. I know some of the staff and I know my way around. It's a friendly homely and still stylish place. Food is always good and the beer is very good. No Bass this time but the Wainwright's and the Pedigree were a good alternative. I would recommend this place.

Excellent service and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Would recommend 100%. The food is first class and very generous portions all fresh products

Great atmosphere, really busy, great service

We have always loved The Lion. Always loved the food and the service has always been great but sadly we won't be rushing back after last night. We booked for eight of us. Six of us arrived first were seated and drinks ordered. When the remaining two arrived they ordered drinks. Food order taken. Starters arrived and were lovely. Although one had soup and one of us had to go to the bit where the staff stood sorting orders to ask for a spoon as after a few minutes we realised they weren't bringing one. Had to ask twice to get more drinks and then each time the server walked off without checking if anyone else required a drink. One of our party had to get up again and go over to ask for the drinks. A pint of coke with no ice and a coke were two of the drinks. The person who ordered the pint of coke got half a glass and ice. When we said why is it half a glass we were told you asked for a bottle - no we didn't. She took it away with a bit of an attitude and brought a full glass back! I do wonder if the servers wearing those headsets is an issue as we had to repeat ourselves a few times through the night. A steak was brought out and the same server didn't know if it was the medium one when asked so walked off with it to ask then when she put it down she said it was rare! It wasn't. Another mixed grill was brought out but we already had the one ordered. We had to ask for more cutlery as it had been used on the starters. It was plonked in the middle of the table as though we were making a fuss. I always had their burger previously as it was delicious. Tonight's was dry and not half as tasty as previous occasions. They did come over and ask if everything OK- one person in our party said yes thanks. I honestly thought it was pointless saying anything to the servers we had cos they weren't listening or bothered up to this point. We sat there surrounded by empty glasses and pots for ages. One of our party put some of the glasses on the empty table behind to make some room in the end. I get it's a Saturday night- I've worked in the food industry but a little effort and acting like they were listening would have helped tonight! We left feeling very disappointed and won't be rushing back sadly.

Excellent food, especially the pizzas.

Just nipped in for a quick bite, staff were friendly and allowed us to take any seat as long as we were gone 15 minutes before the reservation on the table. The pizzas are lovely! Perfect place for a few drinks and some food!

Lion burger presentation excellent chef made burger homemade onion rings 100% first class . The staff polite and attentive nothing too much trouble. Would seriously recommend.

Very bad. i dont know where to start. A family of five , with two young granddaughters. Three of us didnt have big appetites but they refused to serve any small plates for the sunday lunch because they were not under 12 years of age, so we ordered 2 large plates, and shared it, still loads of food was left. what a waste. Food was cold, so asked for extra gravy which may have warmed it up a little, when that eventually arrived, which was about half a cupful, guess what, that was cold too. I didnt have the energy to find anyone to complain. After eating, we sat there for over 30 minutes with our leftovers before eventually having to go to the bar to ask for the dessert menu and ask for our table to be cleaned. I complained when i paid the bill, but I dont even think the guy behind the bar would have mentioned it to the manager. One of the worse Sunday lunches Ive had the displeasure in years.

As regulars of this place I have to say what a massive disappointment tonight.. if it wasn’t for Kat doing her upmost we would have moved on.. The Sunday dinner is usually one of the best in Belper (hence y we return)however not tonight.. Our food was stone cold and the veg well so bland is an understatement, We complained And received our food for a second time well a lot hotter than previously ordered. But still bland and tasteless with no greens whatsoever or gravy as ordered .. what also surprised me was the table at the side of us asked if we had any spare gravy as there’s had not been delivered. We did make the waiter/manager know how disappointed we were but to be honest there was no care in the world or any apology to us bringing us a bill for £51… o and no professionalism taken with there chitter chatter behind the bar..I’m going to say as a local to this area we will not be returning and not now recommending this to others I’m very disappointed tonight

Overnight stay for a nearby family gathering. Easy, free on site parking. Reception, bar, breakfast and house keeping staff were all polite, helpful and friendly. Continental breakfast was good with obliging and friendly staff who quickly cleared and set tables. Bedroom spacious, warm and clean. All the hotel areas we accessed were clean, tidy and well decorated.

A group of school friends and myself chose the Lion to meet after not seeing each other for many years ! Although I’ve walked by this place many many times I’ve never been in ! The bar was busy and my only criticism was there wasn’t enough staff on the bar on what was a busy evening ! However that was the only negative, we were quickly shown to our table and served drinks as required and then ordered our food ! All of us ate something different but everything looked beautiful ! I had the fish grazer a selection of fish, whitebait, Gougons, Prawn, smoked salmon with a salad and sour dough ! It was amazing and at only £20 well worth the money ! A friend had the chicken pie which again looked beautiful ! Staff were attentive, friendly and organised ! I shall definitely make and effort to go back next time I go home x

We've been here a couple of times over the last few months for family celebrations. It's not a restaurant that I would personally pick as it's very expensive for what you get. The mains are around £15-£17 and the desserts are around £7.50. The food is nothing that I would hurry back for. It feels like it's trying to be a notch or two above the standard pub grub offerings, but for me the food doesn't match the prices. The pizzas are around £12-£14 with a large variety to choose from. I had the veggie one, but it was extremely salty. On another visit I had the fish and chips. The fish looked more like a battered sausage. I've definitely had better fish, but the chips are really good. One of our party is gluten-free and there was a good choice for her and my partner enjoyed his fish tacos starter. My parents live locally and come here regularly. A plus point for them being it is a dog friendly restaurant. Good points and bad points, but for me it's nothing to shout about.

Awful food, rude staff this place used to be nice but recently it has been horrible I had the salon and it was vile it just lacked flavour .

You're standard pub grub advertised as gourmet and priced as such. That said, service was excellent and the variety of dining areas makes the venue ideal for a variety of customers.

Very poor service, had to ask staff to clean table before we sat down as it was sticky/dirty.Pieces of plastic in 2 starters 1 inch long . Polythene sticking out of another starter. Never going back and would not recommend it.Apology received and starters not paid for. Even so very poor service

Stayed for a weekend. This place is clean. Some of the food is great some a little lacking in temperature at the point of service, it is also along treck from the kitchen. It’s in need of a refurb. It is also lacking in spare PowerPoints for charging phones etc. some guests moaned about the noise not a problem fir us in the hot room staying cool was our issue but hey ho we weren’t cold which is the main thing. Would stay again bargain prices.

My food was of a very poor standard. The fish was burnt and rubbery. I did let the waitress know this, but there seemed to be little in the way of an apology from the chef. The waitress service was of a good standard.

We chose this Hotel for a birthday and wedding anniversary function for forty people. We were very impressed with the events organiser, Megan, who was friendly and helpful especially as nearer the date changes were made and accommodated due to illness. The room was lovely and the food excellent plus the DJ kept things going well without excessive volume. There are always a few gripes, in this case the long wait for the people who ordered the fish so that the vegetables were cold, communication about the delay would have saved us looking round wondering where it had got to and fresh vegetables should have been brought with the fish. Insufficient gravy for the beef eaters was the other one, particularly annoying due to extra gravy being requested when the menu choices were submitted. But overall a very pleasant and well organised event.

Sorry but over rated. My daughters bought me for mothers day. I had fish and chips. Ended up with really bad stomach all night. Fish was awful.

Pizzas were great and extra toppings or changes to the menu list wasn't a problem.....also we had the best chips ever!

I can only speak of the rooms we had but it was terribly noisy. Both overlooking the smoking courtyard, no chance of peace. Currently I'm laying awake with children who can't sleep at 10 to midnight and there are people shouting out there. I'm not sure what to expect as it is a bar, and people have to have a place to smoke, but this is terrible. Wouldn't stay here again. Shame as the rooms are nice, as was the room service.

Fantastic Christmas Fayre meal, very friendly attentive staff, nothing too much trouble, would definitely recommend. We will certainly be back.

We didn't stay thank god...... But had an xmas meal 03/12/2022. The food was just about okay but the service was absolutely diabolical. We would have had better service in a drive through restaurant. The young people that served us (especially the female) should probably think about a career change as they made it obvious that we were a burden. NOT GOOD LION HOTEL

We went with friends for Sunday lunch after a long walk and really looking forward to Sunday lunch. Staff initially very pleasant, starters good. My husband and friend had liver which turned up tepid. It was returned and obviously microwaved. The roast was ok When the plates were collected and asked how meal was , not good considering Liver not touched. After that no one came to see if we were ok or if we wanted anything else. We even had to go to the bar and ask for the bill. All the time I had to see loads of dirty glasses on the bar not washed up. You need to review your customer service

We went midweek as a Birthday treat. We had pre booked , shown to our table after leaving our details and temperature checked , drinks order taken quickly along with our food order a short time later , my partner had a fresh cooked pizza which she said was delicious, i had a beautifully cooked steak and we shared a salad , good service and food with great hygine measures in place . Very enjoyable , one of our favourite places to eat in Belper .

Ordered a Capricciosa about 2 weeks ago and was charged £11 50p. I said it should be £10 as per the takeaway menu. Felt a bit 'done' that the lady on the phone was adamant I had to pay-up. I asked her to get the website changed. But, it's still on Facebook and website today [2 June] at £10. Which is the correct price?We are both Lion 'regulars', eating there frequently and really enjoy our meals. The bar staff are always friendly and helpful, so, I'm sure this is a 'blip' in the Lion's usually good service. We will therefore be returning as soon as possible.

What a great idea to offer a takeaway/delivery services during these worrying times. Food was just as good as it’s always been when visited previously. Great to be able to support a local business suffering during theses hard times. Keep up the great work guys it is much appreciated and stay safe

I stayed here for just one night on my way through from Worcester to Sheffield, Lovely room very helpful staff, cracking Pizza (made in front of you by the chef and then slid into a proper pizza oven).. a couple of pints of real ale and a very good nights sleep... The breakfast the next morning was excellent.. If I get married again I will have the wedding here.. (don’t tell the wife ) .. I would definitely stay here again

Had a very pleasant lunch last Sunday.Order for drinks taken and promptly delivered on arrival at our table, everyone enjoyed their choices from a wide choice menu served by attentive staff.All in all an enjoyable experience and will visit again.

We had booked for a pizza. After a wait in the room where the pizzas were cooked we were a little unclear how or where to place our order as no staff were present. I went firstly to reception and was sent to the main bar. A very nice young lady came to take our order. our starter of bread, oil and balsamic dip were promptly brought to the table. The main course of freshly baked pizza was ordered and quickly cooked. The friendly young Italian chef advised us well and we ordered the Margherita with sun dried tomatoes and king prawns. This was cooked to perfection and really enjoyable. Many thanks to the chef and the waitress who were both attentive and friendly.

Christmas lunch with family,service was very good,starters came out quickly and all very good,mains was served soon after,giving us a chance to chat in between,disappointed with amount off vegetables for six people,only ten Brussels between us and all vegetables were hard,rest off mains was nice.Pudding caused alot off confusion with the staff not knowing if it was brandy sauce or custard,although custard not a option on the menu,on closer inspection it was custard but head waiter (I think) tried to convince me it was indeed brandy sauce,but later offered a French coffee to make up for lack off brandy sauce. Enjoyed the ambience and staff on a whole were pleasant.

There was a group of us that attended the Christmas party which was located in the marque. The tables were dressed lovely but the chairs were way too low and I practically had my chin on the table. The whole evening was very average. It took a while for the starters to arrive and mine was cold, and lacking flavour. The main course took over an hour to come out too, and again was not great. The veg was undercooked and I needed a chainsaw to cut the sprouts. Dessert was lovely though. I can’t comment on the pub grub served in the main bar, and I will give it a try before I out rule returning. I hear the pizzas are nice!

Visited on a sunday night and was surprised how busy it was in fact it seemed to surprise the staff as they had to sort out the back room, scraping chairs and tables whilst we waiting on our food. Food was really nice. I had pizza - spicy beef not that spicy so good and my wife had a vegetarian salmon carbonara which you dont see very often. Service only ok

Having visited here before and always being left frustrated by the time the food takes to come out we thought we would give it one more try. We weren’t disappointed this time! It seems they have finally managed to get the food to leave the kitchen a bit quicker! We had a mixture of Sunday roasts and main menu meals. Very disappointing that there was no vegetarian option on the Sunday menu :( however the veggie option chosen off the main menu was very good! The beef and lamb were beautiful, the roasts and mash potatoes we one of the best I’ve tasted on a Sunday lunch out! Will 100% be back again for it. £11 for a roast beef dinner of a great quality is more than worth it! And the desserts were fab too. £6.50 for a big chunk of chocolate orange bread and butter pudding! Couldn’t fault any of it, great friendly staff too :)

Struggled to find a table to eat but once we did service fab chicken tikka pizza yummy, burgers looked fab my husband said best burger ever!! Good choice of gins but a bit pricey. Didn't have pudding too full.

The meal we had was excellent - however they let themselves down by excluding some of our group because there was no vegetarian options on the Sunday lunch menu. Frankly it's quite backward not to offer a nut roast these days.

First time visit for my sons 18th birthday. When we arrived we were shown to The Vault. This is a cold, dull room devoid of any atmosphere. The tables looked like a local cafe and we were completely on our own. I did complain, and we were moved to a table in the dining room which was slightly better. Despite this bad start, the food was excellent and the pizzas were especially good. However, first impressions count and I don’t think I’ll be going back.

We booked a family meal here and would definitely recommend. We live locally and this is not our first visit - as the food is great and we are never disappointed. Wide variety of food on the menu, every plate delicious.

We came here for a meal on a week night.i had fillet steak and a spinach saag to share for starters. I had mine medium, it was Cooked to absolute perfection and the peppercorn sauce was stunning, think tasty and creamy. It came with none greasy onion rings ( a rare find ) Hand cut chips and all was absolutely awesome. My partner had steak medallions rare on sourdough bread with liver pate, she said it was amazing and really well cooked. The service by a Lithuanian gentleman was second to none he looked after us throughout making us feel special and being attentive, kind and thoughtful even refilling our glasses as we ordered Prosecco.

We ate here early on a weekend day evening. We'd reserved a table that was cleared for us when we arrived at the pub. We chose food from the standard menu but many in the dining room were eating from the pizza menu (which looked very appetising!). We choose roast dinners, fish & chips and gammon & chips. The food was ok: the portion sizes were quite filling. Prices were reasonable. The service was 'fit for purpose' but not necessarily engaging.

Lovely roast dinners - won't leave you hungry. The Lion has pleasant areas for meals, a drink of coffee. The authentic pizzas looked and smelt great too!

Always been happy with standard of food. Particular staff can be hard to judge and approach.Young staff are either too shy and aren't efficient enough for this kind of establishment or clueless as to what their job is.

a spur of the moment decision to drop in for Sunday lunch turned out to be the best decision I made all day. We had a lovely table in the corner and were served up wonderfully tasty roast lamb accompanied by delicious roast potatoes and really well cooked vegetables. Every mouthful was a delight

Perhaps it was because we were booked to eat quite late in the lunchtime window but service yesterday was friendly but poor. This was a shame because food was really good and worthy of a revisit. Main courses arrived a good 10 minutes before the vegetables and we had to search for staff to clear the table and bring dessert menus. A shame because overall this was a good lunch and a pleasant visit.

There were 4 of us and a baby it was half term and very busy but we were seated quickly and well looked after . Couldn’t fault my salmon and prawn sandwich- yum The boys had the fish finger sandwich on ciabatta - well presented and very tasty! The children’s portion of nuggets was generous with hand cut chips - all in all very positive - thank you :)

I reviewed this place on January and couldn't fault the food but the service was terrible. This had been the case on my previous visit too.

We come here fairly regularly, not through our choice, but through invitation by family members. They always, ALWAYS skimp on the veg for the Sunday lunch! One of our party doesn’t eat potatoes and so we ask for extra veg instead of potatoes and they never bring it (happened 4 times now!)

Over 95% of my approx 100 reviews have been positive but not this one. We were on a table of 11 amongst a private celebration of approx 50 in the rear dining room. Two tables of different heights had been put together to accommodate our 11, but only one tablecloth had been used to cover them, resulting in an unseen half inch differential. Needless to say ,when the bottles of wine arrived they were put in the middle of the table, one red immediately tipped over covering one friend's jacket in red wine and splashing the dresses of two ladies. A waiter arrived promptly and mopped up replacing the napkins but made no offer to replace the wine or attend to the clothing. Because of the size of the party food choices had to be made in advance from a short list, no problem there except two ladies had chosen the fish main course. When the main course arrived there was no fish. We showed the waiter our copy of the order, but he simply said we have no fish. He went to speak to the Chef and returned saying we could wait 2o minutes for some fish or have all that they had left which was one chicken and one beef..Friends that chose the chicken were happy but the others with beef complained that it was as tough as shoe leather.and tasteless.In the corner of the room was a small bar staffed by a young lady. On three occasions. I went to the bar to buy additional wine. Each time she was not there. The first two times she returned after five minutes but on the last occasion we gave up and walked round to the very busy front bar.The lady was there in deep conversation with a young man at the bar., not serving. After a long wait we were served efficiently by a polite apologetic young man, during which she returned to the rear bar. Before leaving we asked to speak to the manager and was told his name and asked to ring him the following day. We rang the next morning but he was unavailable and a promise made that he would return our call later that day. Despite two further calls he did not ring back until three days later. Although polite and offering to pay for the dry cleaning cost of the jacket and a free bottle of wine on our next visit., he was totally dismissive of the other problems implying that they could not be true. In all a very disappointing experience that none of our party will repeat.

Dined on a Saturday evening and very busy. Our favourite meal is the pie and chips which is always amazing! What has happened, very poor - hard veg, thick just cooked chips and too rich sauce with more mushrooms than meat ! Told the waitress but still charged full price .....

Visited one Friday evening with a friend for a catch up. Shared a ‘Lions Pride’ pizza and fries, was very nice! Nice selection of drinks. Was slightly crowded but being near the centre of town that’s understandable, will be back

The events team were extremely helpful and flexible in arranging our night out even down to a cancellation on the night.

We had difficulty initially in pre ordering food as several wanted the gastro menu and some the Christmas menu and we were told our booking couldn’t mix the 2 menus! However this was easily sorted within the group. Initially we were served the wrong starters but this was recitified. Drinks took a while to come after we ordered them at the table. Food was great I felt the pheasant was a little over cooked but there was plenty. Personally I would have liked more vegetables 1/2 sprout per dish !!

I come to Derby on business quite often and when I stay over I always come to The Lion Hotel in Belper as it's just perfect. Not too busy, great food in the bar and the best cooked breakfast.

Love the Sunday Lunch at the Lion Hotel, the Lamb is possibly one of the best roast meals I have tasted in a very long time. Succulent meat, roast potatoes to die for, perfectly cooked vegetables and the best tasting gravy since childhood. A must visit when in Belper

Not a place I would recommend to anyone visiting area. I had a margharita pizza which was a soggy dough topped with so much cheddar cheese the grease was running off it. No sign of mazarella or basil. My friends all had food that seemed to have been heated in a microwave. A side order never arrived and was offered at end of meal. There was not much choice for healthy options. There was a dirty hairbrush on window ledge next to table. No friendly greeting of welcome on arrival. Was ignored by man in reception and man in bar.

We visited The Lion Hotel for a meal on a busy Saturday night. The food and service was excellent. Two of us had pizzas and they were the best pizzas we had ever had. Lovely deserts too. It was also very good value at approx £11 a main course. We would definitely visit again.

Just been for Sunday evening dinner. The adults had roast, one kid had the chicken nuggets and the other had a pizza. All the meals were excellent - they were tasty and hot. The kids meal was really good. Haven't been to the Lion for dinner for a while and was really impressed. The staff were also very good. Well done Lion really liked it. Having had poor meals at The Devonshire, Nonnos and Nourish lately my faith in getting a nice meal in Belper has been restored.

Booked for a family lunchtime celebration including three generations. Despite the restaurant not being full by any means, we were put in a dull back room on our own where we weren’t able to attract the attention of staff without leaving the room.

Booked a table for two people at 5.30 and arrived at 5.30 as planned to be told sorry you booked a table for 7 o’clock. [i know what time we booked as I wanted to get home for 7pm] anyway we were put in the bar area which was ok and ordered two roast beef Sunday lunches. The food came and it looked great but the meat was rare and fatty. Asked for the manager and she appologised and asked if we would like some more beef and we said yes. The only problem was we had finished the food when she brought us more meat so we said don’t bother now thanks. No offer of a complimentary sweet and no discount off the bill. £32 for two drinks and two roast dinners where the beef was very poor to the point we left most of it. (Also no cutlery on the table) won’t be rushing back in a Hurry. Very dissapointed

Excellent table service especially since a wedding party was there too. Nothing too much trouble and friendly staff. High standard of food as commented on by friends and family who had not previously been there.

Three of us had a lamb roast and one had beef. We couldn’t fault the dinner, absolutely beautiful. First time coming for something to eat, the customer service was brilliant. Because we didn’t book a table, they found us a table for four of us in one of their suites because they were busy. I am most definitely coming here again! Delicious food, brilliant customer service!!
