Booked a table for 8 well in advance. Were asked to pre-order because of the table size. Arrived on Friday night in plenty of time for the booking and were rushed to the table with the manager asking if she could start serving starters. We asked if we could order drinks first because we were not in a rush having all travelled 100+ miles and had arrived before the booked time. The manager said that they had another large table booked (clearly taking priority) and encouraged us to start eating!! Starters arrived which were good. Then mains arrived very quickly afterwards, including two plain cod dishes which had not been ordered and weren’t on the menu. The manager returned to the kitchen to be told by the chefs that they were a replacement for fish stew which had not been delivered by the suppliers (so not made on premises). She admitted that she did not know fish stew was unavailable, bizarre given she is the manager and what she said later!! Neither of the two people who had ordered the now unavailable fish stew wanted a piece of cod and had to re-order whilst the remaining six started eating the main courses. Surely, we should have been told when we all sat down that two choices were unavailable and given the opportunity to order another main course at the start of the meal so that all mains arrived together?? We assumed (foolishly) that the two replacement main courses (steak and risotto) would be given priority because the other six main courses had been served. Twenty-five minutes later nothing had arrived and the manager had avoided any form of contact and issued no apology, in fact was chatting happily in the kitchen. One of our party entered the kitchen to cancel the order because the rest of the table had now finished. The manager told him to be patient because it takes at least 25 minutes to cook a steak, which was definitely disputed - more like 4 minutes! Risotto takes several hours to prepare so was presumably ready and bubbling away in a pan!!!! We asked the manager why we had not been contacted about supply problems prior to our arrival or at least asked to re-select when we first arrived, she then said that she had tried to contact us which was a major contradiction (in view of her previous comments) and definitely not the case. Given the nods of support from other diners this was pointed out to her by one of our party who was then asked to leave. The rest of us followed suit although agreed to pay for drinks, not the food (which was indifferent at best). The restaurant lost several hundred pounds because of this incident which could have been avoided with a more proactive management stance. On a more positive note, we all went to No5 restaurant on the Saturday night had a wonderful time and enjoyed some exquisite food. Top Tip spend your money at No 5 a couple of doors down North Street.

A lovely venue. We were 6 for lunch. The food was great, delicious Reubens sandwiches and a sea bass salad. The service was remarkable. Kealeigh was our waitress and had a remarkable attention to detail and eye for service. The rest of the team were also notably kind, accommodating and helpful.

It was a short walk to the Lion Inn for dinner. We were seated promptly with a reservation. The braised lamb was good, the accompanied au gratin potatoes were best ever! We booked a table for 5:15pm and sat outside in the beer garden for a while which was nice. We then sat down at 5:15 am. My husband and I both had the Grilled Tenderstem broccoli, chickpea chips, romesco sauce, cashew cream, dukkah (ve) to start off with which was lovely and would recommend it. We both then had the beef sunday roast which was also good. It was a good portion. Afterwards I had the rhubarb cake which was also nice. Couldn't fault the food or service. Would definitely visit again if in the area.

Smack in the middle of town, with a very pleasant ambience, friendly management and staff, a decent range of draught beers and lagers, and a bar menu with something for everyone. No hesitation in recommending the Lion for either a swift half at lunchtime, a very tasty Sunday lunch or a relaxing pint in the beer garden (weather permitting).

What a glorious weekend spent here! 6 of us and 2 dogs were all made extremely welcome. Nothing was too much trouble. The manager arranged for flowers and chocolates to be put into the rooms before our arrival. The rooms were beautifully appointed with nice touches like real coffee and hot chocolate. The garden is pretty and we spent a happy afternoon in the sun, with the option of watching the Euros on the large screen outdoor TV. Our meal in the evening was gorgeous. Lovely dining room and very good choice of vegan and vegetarian options and everything was well presented and delicious. Breakfast the following morning was worth the trip alone! What really made it memorable was the outstanding service. Everyone was friendly and efficient but Karin and Ula were utterly fabulous and could take up second careers as stand up comics. They didn't charge extra for the entertainment laid on! We would dearly love to come back as soon as possible!

A disappointment! Even when taking into account the age of the building. Our room was extremely shabby,it had a badly stained carpet, paint off the walls and the door. Braiding was hanging off the chair. Door to bathroom did not shut properly. We had a painted up draw to one of the bedside cabinets, torn and dirty paper lining the wardrobe shelves and the bedside cabinets. These are not as a result of an old building! However, the bed was very comfortable as were the pillows and the bed linen was of an excellent quality, similarly the bathroom towels. Shower very good, although as no window or extractor fan in bathroom, the door from the bathroom had to be kept opened otherwise everything remained damp. Housekeeping of the room poor. Additionally, no coffee making machine, had to ask on second morning for one to be left so we could use the 'proper'and only type of coffee on the beverage tray.No note on arrival to say milk had to be obtained at the bar. A dead plant adorned the room. Breakfast though was excellent and service pleasant. We expected more given the cost of the stay, and wouldn't return.

The pub here is lovely. Food is good, varied selection of beverages. Included breakfast was also really nice, as was service from all the staff. The room was a major letdown, however. Room 2 at the front is not one of the pictured rooms, and it's clear why. The carpet is stained, mattress cratered, smelled a bit like backed up plumbing. Bathroom built into a former closet, couldn't stand up straight in it. Trivia night with amplified music until 23:00 directly under the room, with yelling until 23:30.

Didn’t even get round to book a table. I called to enquire about the accessibility for a wheel chair user. First person hung up immediately after I asked this question. Second person said my partner would have to stand to use the toilet. I’m pretty sure he’s thought about standing and it’s not really an option hence the wheel chair. There is a lady there who is Caucasian, middle aged, she has red hair…. She refused to serve my friend who is of Zimbabwean descent. She stated the kitchen wasn’t running for lunch… 15/20mins later a white couple arrived and she directed them to be seated and said very loudly “At least if you try and run away, I can catch you” it turns out the kitchen was running and she selected to just deny my friend access to having lunch. I do feel this was racially motivated and I am extremely extremely disappointed that such a nice establishment would hire such people to attend to their guests. We were in the pretty town of Winchcombe visiting friends at Sudley Castle . We decided to venture into the town to find several eateries they looked nice but just didn’t have that wow factor. After 10 minutes of walking around Winchcombe we came across The Lion inn , we looked in the window to see a lovely restaurant and a log fire burning. Well that made the decision for us after entering we thought 💭 christ we haven’t booked a table ! There is four of us. But we didn’t have to worry as when we walked towards the bar area we were greeted by a member of staff , very polite and a big smile . We asked if we could have a table we said with heads slightly lowered, we haven’t booked sorry 😔 in return we were told no problem and were showed to a table . The service through out was good , the food was lovely and the atmosphere was good . We had the same member of staff throughout our service. . I politely asked for her name her name was Marie or Maria . So a big thank you for looking after us all . It’s a 10 from the 4 of us Marie or Maria . From the moment we arrived the energy was lacking from the staff, who appeared to favour tables of "regulars" over new dinners. The food itself was ok but nothing worth writing home about. What was most disappointing was when we finally did secure a table - having attempted on three separate occasion due to other peoples recommendations we received a below average level of service. Hence we feel it was not value for money when we have since eaten elsewhere locally for less money and received ten times the service and quality of food. I would be hard pushed to recommend the Lion Inn to someone and we will not be returning any time soon.

Second lunch in the garden since the Lion re-opened. The food and service were both very good. However the beautiful garden space is totally spoilt by disgusting amount of cigarette ends left both under most of the tables and actually stuck between the slats of the wooden table we sat at. No ash trays anywhere. Also a lot of paper condiment wrappers left on the floor under our table which was a shame and very unhygienic especially in covid times.

I ate here with my partner on a sunday evening in April.Really nice beer garden and beer was good to go with it. Unfortunately we felt the food was disapointing considering the high price. We had beef brisket burger and beef sirolin roast. The roast which cost £18.50 was missing the advertised cauliflower cheese and the description also said it came with creamed horseradish, when sadly it was just a sachet of sauce provided with the rest of the coniments (mayo & ketchup) - for that price I expected the sauce could have been made. The meat also had an enormous amount of fat on it and some of the vegatables were undercooked.Burger was a bit dense and flavourless, tasted like a supermarket burger and not home made. although the bacon and relish were nicely done. Overall for £14.50 I expected better.Discretionary service charge was also added to the bill which I admit is a pet hate. I dont mind for michellin star standard food, but i object for standard pub fare at inflated prices.

A long-awaited return to pub lunches, ably catered to by the excellent Lion Inn. The staff are friendly and very helpful, bringing us blankets and offering hot water bottles. The outside seating is well-spaced and comfortable, including a number of lovely wooden booths. They even allow dogs! The food came quickly and was hot and delicious; we particularly recommend the trout and any of the chips. The Aspen chips are particularly brilliant if you’re a fan of a lovely mature cheddar. The desserts are also great (I tried to take a photo of the cheesecake but it didn’t last long enough!), as are the coffees and other drinks. Lovely restaurant, but unfortunately the service left us wanting more. Lovely people, but perhaps need a little more training in how to treat customers. Not being offered a drink until half an hour after being seated was quite frustrating, as we only had a limited time due to Covid restrictions. Had we had a drink straight away, we would have spent more money, but the slightly absent service meant we couldn't order more. It was quiet, so the atmosphere was very muted. Felt like we'd turned up after a very busy day, and were treated as such.

The three of us shared two oil and balsamic vinegar offerings with bread which was delicious. My wife and daughter had the vegan burger which cost £14.00 and they said tasted really good. I had the brisket brief burger which was £14.50 and equally tasty. They added £7.05 discretionary service charge which I thought was a little steep, but because the bottle of wine only cost £20, the meal for three totaled £77.55Altogether a good place to eat and a good ambiance.

Reopened post Covid and actually a pretty poor experience. The setting is fine and garden drinks popular with locals, restaurant is lovely room but as with many loses a bit of atmosphere with social distancing. Staff courteous but disorganized, we were served by all 4 different waiting staff and none knowing what the other had covered which displayed in no cutely for the main course, gaps in food delivered, being asked to pay twice. The meals were poor for a venue of this quality. Smoked salmon and watercress .. just that dropped on a plate, no garnish no special touch just felt straight from the supermarket packet. The burgers likewise felt like supermarket shoved in a bun with small portion of fries. Nothing to note no garnish or sauces, small portion pretty bland. Vegetarian cauliflower was better but small and luke warm. We didn’t stay for desert. All quite embarrassing for our guests to the Cotswolds and the 12.5% service charge added in was not worthy.

Only two choices of rose by glass; chose one, and the other one was delivered as they had run out of my choice. Asked to taste first, not what I wanted and the waitress seemed annoyed as she had already poured the glass.Smoked salmon and fennel salad arrived without the fennel. Asked if I could have the fennel and no apology given, just returned to the kitchen and bought some.Rest of lunch was nice and quick service.Service charge added (only two of us); why? I paid it but to be honest the service wasn’t that great. Anyway, we live locally, I usually like The Lion, but please sort your service out before we come again.

Our roast dinners and pies were excellent and the staff were very friendly and helpful. They managed to change our table from 4 to 6 at very late notice and welcomed us to stay in the beer garden after our lunch. The garden looks lovely and it looked like they were setting up an outdoor pizza oven and gin bar for the evening!

A surprise reunion and dinner at a local restaurant for a group of six. Social distancing no issues and a very pleasant member of staff as we checked in. The room was ideal with a very comfy bed and a nice bathroom, shower no bath. The rooms form around a courtyard and are on two floors. One couple had a larger upstairs room, very warm and the fan provided did little to cool the room. But the rest was very good. We had one or two issues with one of the rooms and breakfast was slow, but worth the wait.Throughout the stay one particular member of staff was outstanding, Katie. She resolved problems, served drinks, breakfast and smiled throughout. She does need support however, thus the delay in breakfast. Again, worth the wait though. Many of the other guests were attending a Porsche event about a mile away, so the carpark was a Porsche enthusiast's dream. In summary, Katie was fantastic, the room was good, the location is lovely and all in all, I shall return.

A lovely Sunday lunch in mid August. Between us we had roast pork, chicken and beef. The first two very moist, tender and succulent, but the beef was not the most flavoursome. Vegetables, potatoes and Yorkshire puddings were perfectly cooked. Desserts were generally good - sticky toffee pudding and rhubarb crumble, although the chocolate brownie was a little overwhelmed with sauce. Place is typical of a Georgian coaching inn and service was good.

Popped in a few times whilst we stayed in Winchcombe. We loved the service, great beer, good wine and fabulous food! I had an amazing crab and tomatoes salad gazpacho, and my husbands steak was tasty, well cooked and delicious. Thoroughly recommend.

On our first day in Winchcombe we called into the Lion Inn for a drink and were seated in the beer garden. This establishment is positively encouraging the sole use of a mobile phone App to facilitate both ordering and payment for food and drink from your table. However, you can use the usual methods of payment upon request. Please note that you will attract a service charge using the App.Four days later, we returned and once more sat in the beer garden. We experienced difficulty with the App and placed our order face to face.Upon leaving, our eldest son paid for the drinks with his debit card and we made a reservation for a table for four later that same evening. We returned later that evening and sat in the restaurant and ordered a round of drinks and four meals. The food was very tasty and well presented but quite small in portion size.We chose to pay using a debit card and were presented with a significantly higher bill than we'd anticipated. We queried the amount with the waitress and this caught the attention of the Manager who rudely sidelined her. His explanation for the amount charged astounded us. He claimed that a ticket had been left open (unpaid) for our table earlier that day when we visited for drinks and that had been added to our evening bill. No mention of that until we had questioned the bill. Furthermore, and very fortunately our son had the receipt for the drinks from the earlier visit. What gives him the right to load our bill without first doing us the common courtesy of asking or explaining why??He came across as a very rude and abrupt person even before this situation developed. On a positive note a refund was applied upon request and I can now confirm that our bank statement reflects this.

What a lovely lunch ! Met with a friendly warm welcome and offered a table inside or outside. Felt very safe with plenty of signage, sanitiser and social distance between tables. Drinks were great - enjoyed a couple of pints, and the food was excellent - an interesting menu with plenty of variety and good value too. Would heartily recommend the tomato gazpacho to start and the lamb rump main course. My wife had a burger, a great test of any pub, and enjoyed every bit !! Can’t wait for our next trip over.

Was staying very close to Lion Inn so called in around 18.00 - family of 3. Welcome at the door was tepid - told kitchen busy with bookings so could not eat until 20.00. “Find yourself a table outside and use App if you want to order drinks”. Moving on drinks came quickly - good service. Looking around I would say no more than half of customers were eating inside or outside. To my mind this is a strange idea of a service. Menu is limited and simple and place was not buzzing at 18.00 on a Monday. Guy at door could not be bothered so we won’t be returning. Place is nothing special so you would think they would make more of an effort.

Really nice night. Beautiful gin menu. Food was fantastic. Fish and crisps were hot and crispy. Full of flavour and freshness. Love the interior design and gardens are beautiful.

Our recent visit to the Lion Inn in Winchcombe for dinner was such a disappointment. The staff weren't particularly welcoming, the service was slow especially in taking our order, the food was tepid and just average quality and the prices high end especially for wine by the glass. What was worryingly absent was any sign of 'covid security'. There was no hand sanitiser anywhere, no asking for contact details for track and trace and the table we chose to sit at was filthy so obviously hadn't been cleaned after the previous occupants left it. There is nothing to recommend this place at all.

Enjoyed a drink in the gorgeous garden before eating in the restaurant. Food was amazing and service friendly and efficient. Would definitely recommend the Lion especially the lamb which was so tender and delicious.

The food was great...the roasted Cauliflower, Chicken Tarragon Pie and Moving Mountain Burger were all cooked well, were nice and hot and were very tasty. Unfortunately the service was slow and patchy and we had to wait a long time to order additional drinks, desert and the bill. We were seated out of sight in the restaurant side of the pub with only one other couple and staff did not come regularly or frequently so both tables felt forgotten....probably a symptom of staffing as mentioned in the response to a previous review, but still not great.

We enjoyed the food. Delicious vegetables and mash, the pie was good albeit a bit too much pastry and not a lot of filling, suspiciouslying bought in?? The big guy with the sweaty back was a bit patronising in his implementation of the distancing measures. Could do with some social skills training

Went for Valentine’s Day lunch and we were one of only two tables occupied in the restaurant. Very little choice on menu, basically burger, fish and chips or salad. Enquired if there were any specials but were told these had already sold out - at 12.30pm and with only four other people present! Settled for two starters each as main courses were so uninspiring. There was only one copy of the dessert menu which was stained and dirty. The waitress (who was very pleasant) said she’d tried to print another copy but was unable to - not sure what happens on a busy evening! Sadly this was our second bad experience at The Lion - the first time we were booked for a birthday lunch and were phoned an hour before to say they’d double booked. Fortunately a more accommodating restaurant nearby saved the day on that occasion. Will we be returning? Definitely not.

Volveremos

Our server Dean was very busy but his service was great. The restaurant was busy as it was peak Sunday grub time so we queued at the carvery for a while but all staff were lovely and friendly, and everything we wanted was available and very nice.

Stayed overnight at the Premier Inn on a meal deal, which normally includes a full breakfast. Restaurant closed no official reason given. Whitbread really know how to upset both staff and customers. Closing a large number of Beefeater restaurants will deter many regular Premier Inn. customers. Only advice we can offer is Better get a Travel Lodge.

Starters good. Main roast not so good. Turkey bundled onto the plate in a heap. Vegetable portions non existent. Small stalk of broccoli and 2 miniscule pieces of cauliflower. Seem to think that a huge Yorkshire pudding and a few extra potatoes makes up for it. Unimpressed

Character pub well supported by locals with cosy fire burning in typical old English pub surroundings. We felt very welcome as we looked forward to our Sunday lunch. Apparently they have only been serving Sunday lunch for a few week and for sure they have it right. Tender pink roast beef served with parsnips, carrots, cabbage, roast potatoes and a good sized Yorkshire pudding. A further side dish to share with cauliflower cheese, red cabbage and swede. All very tasty. It’s not a huge pub, a number of folk were disappointed and had to return later with a booking, but well worth it. Surely one of the best Sunday Roasts in Tewkesbury.
