We visited for lunch on Saturday 29th March. Our waitress was Karin(or Karen - sorry!). She was wonderful. We all agreed that the service she provided was exceptional. Helpful, authentic, informative and just hilarious(!). I’m ashamed to say that I very rarely leave reviews however we all agreed that we couldn’t not. Thank you Karin, you made our lunch/afternoon!

We just spent five nights at this small, cozy inn at the center of Winchcombe village in the Cotswolds. Everything, the management, staff, food and atmosphere were excellent. For those looking for a relaxing stay in a quiet, peaceful village, I would recommend the Lion Inn most positively.

This place is awesome. Loved it. Great pub, quiet but enough going on. Amazing food. Room was ideal - no noise at night and gorgeous comfy bed. The town is straight out of Harry Potter - for anyone that enjoys a wander head to the Cotswolds way and go north or south. Thank you all the staff for making is such a great stay. nick

My lovely boys brought me here for a mothers day dinner and we were not disappointed!! From the minute we walked in, the staff were attentive and polite. Karyn, our waitress was exceptional and her attention to detail was faultless. The kids loved how well she interacted with them. The food was not too long a wait, served hot and most of all, was delicious! The trio roast was absolutely perfect and the gravy was like liquid gold! The chocolate fudge brownie was rich and indulgent, but just the right portion size. It was great value for money, and we will certainly be returning!! Thanks Karyn for making my already lovely day, even better!

Slightly disappointed this year. We have been for breakfast during Cheltenham week for several years and thoroughly enjoyed the experience hence returning year after year. This year the breakfast menu was slashed to the bare minimum and the price raised to £20 for the English Breakfast I have no quibble with the food which was excellent. Please have a rethink about choice and cost Thanks

Booked for Sunday lunch on our long weekend away: we had visited here a couple of years ago and remembered the good food. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. Food arrived and a hiccup with 2 of the dinners. 2 plates out of 5 were cold but fair play to them, the plates were whisked away and a few minutes later replaced. And no, they had not been reheated! I'd added some sides to my plate before realising there was a problem and was definitely new plate of food. If im being honest the food is a little on the expensive side but was delicious food!

Good old pub with plenty of history. Recently revamped I a subtle way without making much difference. Some interesting and attractive food, but not to die for. I Still think it's over priced for drinks and food. Smiles in short supply from the team.

We had a fantastic meal made all the more memorable by our waitress, Karen who was the true star of the show. Her sharp wit and sass kept us entertained. Beware she may pick a particular target to bore the brunt of her (hopefully) playful teasing. As for the food, we couldn’t fault the roasts—pork, beef, and chicken were all superb, the servings offering great value for money. The roast potatoes were excellent, crisp on the outside and fluffy inside, and the fish and chips were also top-notch. If I was being picky the Yorkshire puddings were a bit dry, but as an Australian, maybe I’m not the best judge of a proper Yorkshire pud. Desserts were also a definite highlight, with the figgy pudding and stewed plums standing out. Karen enthusiastically sold us the 24-hour caramel croissant bread and butter pudding , which also was a crowd pleaser. The service was great, with the staff happily accommodating all our requests. However, I think the real reason to come here is Karen. She’s like a roast dinner in human form: warm, a bit crispy, but packs a lot of flavour. Highly recommend the Lion Inn if you’re ever in Winchcombe.

We had enjoyed a nights stay at the red lion our room was wonderful all decorated so nice and a comfy bed - just marked down as we were over the kitchen and a noise from the cellar extractor went on all through the night so sleep wasn't the best. We did mention this on checking out and were told that this has been a problem since the renovation and they are trying to solve it. Once this has been done wouldn't hesitate to stay here again if another room wasn't available

We had a great stay over the weekend at the Lion with friends. Positioned neatly in the middle of Winchcombe high street, with a large courtyard garden and parking right out the back. The pub is a lovely old building that exudes charm, extensive dining and a fabulous menu with specials, we ate in the evening at it was lovely. Our room looked to have been freshly renovated (classic room), nicely decorated and a comfy bed, only marked down 1 star as it was positioned over the kitchen and extractions fans in the morning made quite hum in the room. The staff were great and the whole place is very dog friendly, perfect base for walks in the area...we look forward to coming again.

We didn't stay, but popped on for a pint with friends. Drinks are overpriced and the landlord is rude. This has been highlighted on other reviews, so it isn't just me. He really should recognise that his customers have ears and can hear what he is saying about them. He called last orders an hour early, which I guess was aimed at us!

We stayed at the Lion Inn as part of a weekend walk on the Cotswold way. The place is cosy and charming with a lovely bar area and all day fireplace as well as an outdoor sunny terrace/garden area. We had three rooms - these were all beautifully appointed with lots of character and delicious tea etc. Some of the rooms are above the restaurant/pub area so be mindful that noise does carry a bit but this is the nature of staying in an Inn. (This wasn’t an issue for us and they also provided ear plugs.) The food was delicious (both dinner and breakfast) and the service was fabulous - the team were all so friendly and accommodating. I hope to come back!

First time visiting The Lion but I'm sure it won't be the last. I had lunch with a group of friends here on Saturday at the end of a long walk over from Prestbury. We were so ready for some good food and drink by the end of the hike; The Lion did not disappoint. 3 of us had the Chicken Milanese Flatbread which was delicious. Other members of the group tried the burger, the fish-finger bun, and the chopped salad - everyone loved their meals and the various side dishes we ordered were equally as good. Fantastic service from the lovely Brooke, who made sure we were all looked after. The pub was busy - which added to the great atmosphere - but our service and food was very prompt! It was also lovely to see so many people enjoying the sunshine in the pretty beer-garden. Can't wait to visit again 👏

Recently purchased a couple of properties in Winchcombe, and decided to take a look around the local pubs to add as a rental point. Before entering i admired the beautiful building from outside, lovely old stonework with beautiful windows. It was a week night but the place was pretty busy which is always a good sign, was greeted by staff member and ordered a Guinness, it was a tad on the pricey side but it was properly poured and was very good Guinness, so didn't mind that at all. The restaurant seemed busy with food coming from the kitchen on a regular basis, although the setup seemed strange as was walking through a busy bar area to go through to a seperate side, to serve the food. Garden area was very nice, a nice patio area that would be lovely to sit in during the summer, and some lovely wooden huts to sit in at the top of the garden. Toilets were a little smelly, but hey it's a toilet at the end of the day. Overall a good pub that I will recommend

Lived in the Cotswolds for many years, but never eaten in Winchcombe. Found ourselves in town at lunchtime and thought we would give the Lion ago, especially as it has been recently refurbished. We were first in, so as you would expect and hope, the service was great and the food came nice and promptly. Unfortunately both my wife and I were somewhat disappointed with the food, especially with how expensive it was. My fish finger sandwich could have done with fish in the fish fingers and my wife’s flat bread was extremely dry and hard. Sorry folks, but if you’re going to charge well the food better live up to it.

We loved our stay at The Lion! On arriving, we decided to extend our stay, which meant a room change, but they were more than happy to do this - it also meant a room upgrade for us! Karyn checked us in, we had our free beer in our hands within minutes and we felt right at home by the fire. The food is lovely - a varied menu from comforting grub to luxurious elegance. Breakfast is top notch too (get the full English, the Butcombe Breakfast plus some extras!) The bed was wonderfully comfortable and I enjoyed the cast iron bath every night too. The dog felt very welcome too - he was even served a breakfast sausage. Karyn again stood out with her hospitality, by writing out some walking instructions for us to wear off the hearty breakfast. We felt almost part of the family during our stay, thanks to Karyn. After a morning of walking, we found our spot by the fire again and played some of the wide selection of games available before watching the Six Nations. Many Butcombes were sunk! It was really wonderful to be hosted by people who clearly have a passion and enjoyment in what they do. Thanks again to Karyn, Alex and everyone at The Lion for such a wonderful stay. What had the potential to be a lovely family getaway ended up being disappointing. my 8month pregnant daughter could not fly home to South Africa so we chose to celebrate Christmas at your establishment, considering we booked our 3 rooms (family of 6) many months in advance we sure were made to feel like an after thought. Our first dinner was pre booked but double booked at the same time so we were advised to rush that for the next guest. Christmas lunch, our table was squished in and the two beautiful 6 seater round tables on either side of the restaurant had a couple ( 2 guests) and the other had 4 guests seated at each. After exploring the village we returned to the Inn just in time to order before closing at 4pm and we were told that although we were paying and staying guests we weren't allowed to order from the bar even though there were other patrons being attended to. The general attitude was poor besides Karyn who brought joy everytime she engaged with us. Decor needs attention and food was good.

Unfortunately the atmosphere in the restaurant was as dead as a doornail. It was 3 days before Christmas on a Sunday at 6.45pm and we were the only table in there for the last 30 minutes after the one other table left. There wasn't any music or festive cheer at all! The food was OK. The menu a bit sparse and lack of diversity. I had the festive turkey meal with all the trimmings however the turkey was a bit cold. My husband had the vegetarian risotto which he said was nice. We booked this 6 weeks in advance and told the establishment about our son having a sesame allergy however they brought out a sesame bun on this plate. They did, however, make a new burger without the bun but that shouldn't have happened since we gave them prior warning. The staff also weren't trained on the details of the food and felt "they are made with butter and things like that" was an adequate answer to the question "what are these?". The poor staff shouldn't be put in that embarrassing position. So, not a great experience overall. It's a shame as when we popped in earlier in the day to ask if we could change the time of our table, it was busy and welcoming. Obviously we were after thoughts as the last customers of the weekend!

Perfect location in the town, but wasn’t told how to find the pay and display car park at back of hotel.we stayed in room 3 which was so noisy, couldn’t get to sleep until every one had gone home. There were lots of stains on the bedroom carpet and curtains, no fire notice on the door, the bathroom door wouldn’t close,. Such a shame as it had great potential.

The Lion Inn was a beautiful pub! We had a table of 5 for lunch, we had friendly service, lovely atmosphere, and amazing service. The food was wonderful and we all had something different from each section of the menu. It was fabulous and easy to get the bill and attention of the staff if we needed it. Would recommend.

We booked to have our staff Christmas lunch here, although didn't choose the Festive menu as we preferred the look of the regular one. We booked through the website for a table for 6 between 2pm and 4pm. We arrived shortly after 2pm to be told the kitchen shut at 2pm but if we were quick we could place an order. We did this even though 2 of our party had not arrived. We ordered mains which arrived 5 minutes before our other 2 guests. The food, I have to say was absolutely delicious, we couldn't fault it, except maybe a little cool for 2 of us! After our plates were cleared no one else came to our table. I understand that if the kitchen was closed we would not be offered dessert, but I feel we should still have been offered some coffee or more drinks. The gentleman who welcomed us said we shouldn't have been able to book a table for that time, but, as I booked it through their website, I feel that is more their fault than ours! It was a real shame because it is a lovley place with well cooked food and we were looking forward to our celebratory lunch. Perhaps around the festive period they should consider being a little more flexible with the kitchen opening times!

I stayed here the first night of a six day Cotswold Way hike from Broadway to Bath, and it was a perfect end to the first days walking. Friendly welcome, clean and comfortable room and very nice shower/bathroom. Pub atmosphere was exactly what I would have hoped for, and for dinner / breakfast the food was good and service professional.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch with friends before visiting Sudeley Castle for the spectacle of light. Excellent quality roast (not the largest portions), well kept Butcombe Rare breeds Pale Ale and delight pudding (which if the roast had been bigger I wouldn't have had room for - so a plus). Lovely log fire. Very busy but not over crowded and very good service/welcoming staff.

Came for dinner for my boyfriend’s birthday, it is a lovely pub and you can take your dog! I had a lovely meal, however the other meal was awfully salty and ruined his dinner. Left a bit of a sour taste so we didn’t stay for dessert, the manager did refund the meal but it was a shame for a birthday at what was otherwise lovely place.

Very nice pub. The barmaid Amy was so helpful and chatty. Well with the visit. And the Guinness was great.

Super quick the fish and chips are amazing and portion sizes are huge and it's great. The chicken burgers are amazing. Definitely visiting again.
