Here, at the Lion Inn, we found the PERFECT stay. When we arrived at the Lion Inn, which we’d booked as part of a circular walk of the Cotswolds, we were amazed to find ourselves in a 15th Century Inn, with so much character and beautifully cared for. We were warmly met by Kealiegh, the Assistant Manager. We were lucky enough to receive an upgrade to a large quite ensuite room at the back of the Inn. Little did we know at the time that the renovation of rooms had only just occurred in January. This large beautiful room was sympathetically refurbished to provide every modern convenience travelling guests could want, including a small night light beside the toilet in case of getting up in the night. The King bed was very comfortable and the room included tea and coffee, a smart television, a lounge, desk, a large bath tub and separate shower basin and toilet. We were offered a small jug of fresh milk without even asking. The consideration and sensitivity to guests needs is beyond what one normally experiences while travelling. We chose to have dinner there in the evening and what a lovely quiet table towards the back of the restaurant which is an adjoining area of the Lion Inn. In fact the restaurant has just received a Rosette, which is thoroughly deserved. Clearly, all of the kitchen staff as well as those we met in the dining areas are truly passionate about their work and caring for the inn. It was the same experience for breakfast. We were so warmly treated throughout our stay we felt completely at home. It is rare that you experience such a memorable stay for a single night, where everything is perfect. This was the one for us. We just wish we could have stayed for a week! Congratulations to all of those who work here and give so much of themselves to the Lion Inn. Thanks Kealiegh, Lottie and Karyn. You made our circular walk of the Northern Cotswold villages truly special.

Amazing staff and the food ....no words(brilliant). They have this huge garden . Only one small point to add ....you should think , maybe having only one part of the garden for smokers. Also people should be more aware of their surroundings. Maybe when you see people at the next table having lunch don't smoke like a train .

I was totally blown away with the service we received at the inn and restaurant! It surpassed my expectation in all areas. The room, the Oakley, was absolutely beautiful. The decor throughout the entire inn was beautiful. The fabrics were high-end and the service was the same. The food is great! We had breakfast and dinner twice. You will not be disappointed. Acabamos de regresar a casa después de un hermoso paseo circular desde la Abadía de Hailes a Winchcombe, completado por un delicioso almuerzo en el encantador Lion Inn. Booked for Sunday lunch on our long weekend away: we had visited here a couple of years ago and remembered the good food. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. Food arrived and a hiccup with 2 of the dinners. 2 plates out of 5 were cold but fair play to them, the plates were whisked away and a few minutes later replaced. And no, they had not been reheated! I'd added some sides to my plate before realising there was a problem and was definitely new plate of food. If im being honest the food is a little on the expensive side but was delicious food!

We had a fantastic meal made all the more memorable by our waitress, Karen who was the true star of the show. Her sharp wit and sass kept us entertained. Beware she may pick a particular target to bore the brunt of her (hopefully) playful teasing. As for the food, we couldn’t fault the roasts—pork, beef, and chicken were all superb, the servings offering great value for money. The roast potatoes were excellent, crisp on the outside and fluffy inside, and the fish and chips were also top-notch. If I was being picky the Yorkshire puddings were a bit dry, but as an Australian, maybe I’m not the best judge of a proper Yorkshire pud. Desserts were also a definite highlight, with the figgy pudding and stewed plums standing out. Karen enthusiastically sold us the 24-hour caramel croissant bread and butter pudding , which also was a crowd pleaser. The service was great, with the staff happily accommodating all our requests. However, I think the real reason to come here is Karen. She’s like a roast dinner in human form: warm, a bit crispy, but packs a lot of flavour. Highly recommend the Lion Inn if you’re ever in Winchcombe.

Our room looked to have been freshly renovated (classic room), nicely decorated and a comfy bed, only marked down 1 star as it was positioned over the kitchen and extractions fans in the morning made quite hum in the room. Recently purchased a couple of properties in Winchcombe, and decided to take a look around the local pubs to add as a rental point. Before entering i admired the beautiful building from outside, lovely old stonework with beautiful windows. It was a week night but the place was pretty busy which is always a good sign, was greeted by staff member and ordered a Guinness, it was a tad on the pricey side but it was properly poured and was very good Guinness, so didn't mind that at all. The restaurant seemed busy with food coming from the kitchen on a regular basis, although the setup seemed strange as was walking through a busy bar area to go through to a seperate side, to serve the food. Garden area was very nice, a nice patio area that would be lovely to sit in during the summer, and some lovely wooden huts to sit in at the top of the garden. Toilets were a little smelly, but hey it's a toilet at the end of the day. Overall a good pub that I will recommend

We loved our stay at The Lion! On arriving, we decided to extend our stay, which meant a room change, but they were more than happy to do this - it also meant a room upgrade for us! Karyn checked us in, we had our free beer in our hands within minutes and we felt right at home by the fire. The food is lovely - a varied menu from comforting grub to luxurious elegance. Breakfast is top notch too (get the full English, the Butcombe Breakfast plus some extras!) The bed was wonderfully comfortable and I enjoyed the cast iron bath every night too. The dog felt very welcome too - he was even served a breakfast sausage. Karyn again stood out with her hospitality, by writing out some walking instructions for us to wear off the hearty breakfast. We felt almost part of the family during our stay, thanks to Karyn. After a morning of walking, we found our spot by the fire again and played some of the wide selection of games available before watching the Six Nations. Many Butcombes were sunk! It was really wonderful to be hosted by people who clearly have a passion and enjoyment in what they do. Thanks again to Karyn, Alex and everyone at The Lion for such a wonderful stay. We do hope to be back again!

We have had the most wonderful stay at The Lion! The room was to of a high standard and we had an interrupted sleep. We were pampered from the minute we arrived and the breakfast and evening meal was amazing. We had breakfast by the open fire and we really did not want to leave! Thank you team for looking after us!

What had the potential to be a lovely family getaway ended up being disappointing. my 8month pregnant daughter could not fly home to South Africa so we chose to celebrate Christmas at your establishment, considering we booked our 3 rooms (family of 6) many months in advance we sure were made to feel like an after thought. Our first dinner was pre booked but double booked at the same time so we were advised to rush that for the next guest. Christmas lunch, our table was squished in and the two beautiful 6 seater round tables on either side of the restaurant had a couple ( 2 guests) and the other had 4 guests seated at each. After exploring the village we returned to the Inn just in time to order before closing at 4pm and we were told that although we were paying and staying guests we weren't allowed to order from the bar even though there were other patrons being attended to. The general attitude was poor besides Karyn who brought joy everytime she engaged with us. Decor needs attention and food was good.

We booked our evening meal at The Lion Inn in Winchcombe for a 7pm table. We were offered a table in the restaurant area but ultimately decided to stay in the bar area close to a roaring fire. The atmosphere inside this inn is particularly cosy and welcoming. Despite being busy, the bar staff were super-efficient; serving without delay, stoking the fire and ensuring no one was wanting for anything. Absolutely first class which is why we cancelled our second evening in Winchcombe in favour of a repeated night at The Lion Inn. The food is sumptuous and inviting as you can see from a couple of photos I took. All in all, thoroughly recommended - we shall return!

We booked to see the lights at Sudeley castle , so we decided to visit the lion inn pub before visiting the castle . We phoned to say we were going to be approximately 10 mins , the lady said “ fine “ We had a party of 12 people . When we arrived the young lady with her hair in a pointy tail , shrugged her shoulders and said they were all booked. It was so disappointing and so unprofessional, we had only heard of good things about the place . I think the fact we had a couple of infants with us put them of from excepting us. Overall we felt really let down and disappointed

This may be a pretty pub but avoid at all costs!! One staff member behind the bar was the rudest and most unhospitable we have ever experienced in all of the Cotwolds! Agree with all other poorly rated reviews... staggering rudeness! To add insult to injury, when we couldn't wait to escape, we were given an incorrect inflated bill... a mistake apparently! Advise you not to go to this pub at all but if you do, check your bill carefully and be prepared to be insulted!

We had the most wonderful Christmas at the Lion...2024...the rooms are stunning and beautifully kept...the staff are simply wonderful..nothing is too much, very approachable and helpful. The food is fabulous and Christmas lunch was perfectly proportioned..breakfast was lovely and fresh with options for plant based which was great for me. Every single staff member needs mentioning who worked from the 24th to the 26th December 2024...you all deserve a paid week off 🙂 Thankyou all for an unforgettable Christmas 🎄 ❤️

Always a pleasure to visit the Lion Inn. Took my 90 year old mother for boxing day lunch and although it wasn't a festive menu, the food was brilliant and everyone could have what they wanted including vegan. Service was superb. Friendly, efficient and at could not have been more accommodating from booking and reorganising a later time for us through to the meal. Perfect, thank you to all concerned.

Delicious food. Great atmosphere. Beautiful garden for relaxing with a wee drink. Climbing frame for the children which they all love so much. Space for them to run around playing tag, etc. PLUS our pooches are very welcome too. They even have a large keg/barrow full of water and plenty of bowls to keep our Dog's hydrated & as happy as us humans! This is the perfect public house to visit in the summer time with the whole Family. You will never be disappointed at the Appletree! 10/10 ⭐️

If I could my latest experience zero stars I would. Over the years I’ve been buying fish and chips here and it’s been great with decent portion size or if anything too much. I always order large cod and it is massive however today I received 2 slivers of cod. I went back after buying with it to ask if I had been given the wrong cod - the grumpy lady behind the counter opened it and declared it was definitely large and told me sorry you came back and its now cold, wrapped it up and gave it back to me. Not what you expect and I could clearly see the fish that was cooked and waiting was larger. Awful customer service, would rather drive 5 mins further and go to Simpsons-similar price but with food customer service and better tasting food

We've been customers for years but our last visit was appalling. My mother is terminally ill and in a wheelchair, we arrived for a carvery and found somewhere to sit in the bar which we didn't realise was reserved because there were no reserved signs, only cutlery laid out (which apparently substitutes a reserved sign, whereas most restaurants have cutlery laid out on tables anyway, so how is one to know the difference?). We were then told to move by a red-headed woman with glasses who was the picture of apathy with her attitude and very surly when I challenged her on the lack of reserved signs (apparently cutlery being laid out on a table means that it's OBVIOUS the table is reserved) well, it clearly doesn't suffice or we wouldn't have sat there. I had to move my wheelchair bound mother to sit by the toilets on a table that was raised too high for her to sit at, which clearly wasn't suitable. We were appalled at the servers surly attitude - We would have been happy to move if placed at a suitable table and asked politely. I'm afraid this establishment has lost us as regulars.
