Great village pub ! Such a good place for a mid walk, warm and welcoming stop. The new management has made a big difference. Even the outside (and the toilets 😁) are pleasant now!

The new management have done a fantastic job re-opening The Lion. Grab a pizza and a pint or a glass of wine, you will not be disappointed. There is plenty of room at the back of the pub when it is warm enough and it is situated in a charming Suffolk village.

We were visiting Clare and then meeting friends, so thought this pub sounded like a good bet. Good reviews on Trip Advisor and very easy parking, being just outside Clare. This is a simple traditional country pub.. We had a nice welcome from the landlord and the few locals enjoying their beers. We all went for prawn baguettes or sandwiches, and these were excellent. The bitters were good and the choice of wines suited the ladies. This was an enjoyable visit and we will return.

We visited this pub a couple of weeks ago for lunch and the food and the welcome was great. They only thing they need to improve on is the outside space as it is very overgrown. We will definitely be back next time we are passing.

A proper pub used by local where the drinks come before the food. Friendly service, and scrupulous attention to the COVID regime. Recommended.

As a small group of walkers we visited the Lion on Thursday lunchtime. COVID rules, registration, screens, table service, etc was in place and used. A good range of beers and simple but good traditional food was enjoyed and served with a smile.

This is a lovely pub, with friendly service and excellent food in the middle of a lovely village. We've been here many times and never had a disappointing meal. The staff are great, and the place has a warm and traditional ambience without being old fashioned.

Nice restaurant in a local pub environment. Good selection of choice. Thought the starters were slightly overpriced and quantity was disappointing. The main course was better value for money and of reasonable quality however the meal could have been served at a better temp. There seemed to be a delay in the meal being rung as ready and the serving team getting the meal from the kitchen to the table. Desserts were very good. Overall our bill came to £110 for a table of three. Nice location, good choice of menu but perhaps we thought the quality could have been better achieved on this occasion. We would return.

Overall an enjoyable dining experience. There were however a few points which have afforded a deduction from the award of five stars. A side salad was requested without onion, but came with it; a steak was requested 'blue' but was served medium rare and a dessert was requested with custard but came served with ice cream.

It’s been a while since we ate here. We were very impress with the new decor. Service was great from the moment we walked in. They didn’t rush us to our table so we were able to relax in the bar for a drink. The young lady that was our server was polite, not pushy but apologise for the delay. We didn’t feel there was one. They were busy in the restaurant with a huge group so that’s most probably why she felt she should apologise. She knew what was available so when we order three of the same starters she knew straight away there was only two left, normally in our experience you order the food and the waitress would come back to say not available. She made sure through out our stay that we were ok and kept us topped up with drinks. Food was fantastic and good value for money. Told my husband we should make the effort and come here more often.

The food was nice and the staff were friendly. I think our expectations were quite high because of reviews and that they had to take card details on booking but we had to wait over a hour between courses and it wasn't very busy. The waitress did apologise but only once they brought mains out and just avoided eye contact in between. We still had a nice time and would return.

We meet with friends from Bristol as it is halfway, and we always have a good time with excellent service and excellent food.They always comment on how comfortable the place is and would not go anywhere else. Always confident to recommend to friends.Well done to all the staff.

Food was incredibly tasty and there was a wide selection

We found the menus confusing. A two course fixed price and an a la carte. The former had items, which did not feature on the latter. It was odd that we could not choose one item from the fixed price menu and another from the a la carte. All the choices must have been available and it would not have been difficult to price accordingly. Otherwise, the food was good, well cooked and presented and the service was very attentive. It was disappointing to have to suffer background music in the bar area, although this is a universal problem. It is quite unnecessary. People visit pubs and restaurants to eat, drink and talk, not to listen to music! Our table was directly under one of the speakers and although we asked for the music to be turned off, we were told it could only be turned down, not off. I doubt the other customers would have objected if they had been asked!

Went for a family meal to try the Sunday lunch & it’s was the best we’ve ever had. Fantastic cut of lamb, beautiful cauliflower cheese & brilliant service, we will definitely be going again.

Professional friendly customer service from the staff. Very nice relaxing atmosphere in the restaurant which was perfect for our occasion. Food was good quality for the price overall but the mixed grill could have been better cuts of meat and bigger portions for the cost. Overall, a lovely pub with a room for everyone and would definitely recommend to family and friends.

Absolutely beautiful venue, and food was second to none. Slightly quieter than normal wondering if Louise will be back soon as she is a big presence in the pub and really holds a good atmosphere while hosting in the pub.

Really nice, friendly, cosy pub. Good selection of real ales but no food on the lunchtime I visited. A perfect stop for those like me walking the Stour Valley Way and there is even a community shop next door selling ice creams. Perfect.

The food was great, but considering the price and service level, I don’t feel it was a good overall experience. The pub is lovely, well decorated and the tables haven’t been set too close to each other. Unfortunately though, it took us a long time to place our drinks order and the bartender seemed inexperienced and it took a great deal of time for our drinks to be ready (coke and pimms, nothing complex - turned out the pimms was just pimms and lemonade). The food came relatively quickly and was well presented and tasty. After finishing our meal it took around 30 minutes for our plates to be cleared at which point we decided to pay and take our chances elsewhere for a dessert. The bill then took another 30 minutes. All in all a great shame as the place has potential to be great. The chef is clearly well skilled but the bar staff weren’t. Must say though that the service at the table was very friendly.

A nice clean, very efficient restaurant serving fantastic food. Staff are very personable and even as a lone diner, i was completely relaxed. Be warned though, they are completely cashless... You must pay by card. My only disappointment...is just another establishment that does not serve New Zealand Sauvignon by the glass. I wish this would change. But that aside, i would definitely eat here again.

Although the pub was very quiet on the night my friend and I were there the food and service was excellent,the young girl who attended to us was polite and friendly, the fish and chips we had were absolutely delicious, my husband and I booked here last time we came down from Liverpool , this would be our regular eating place if we lived down here,

First time eating here and will make sure I return. It was really quiet I thought for a Thursday, only 3 tables in. The food was very good, I had lamb and my partner had a steak, which he said was cooked perfectly. The decor is really clean, and modern, I love the sink in the ladies loo. My only slight moan is I like my dinner on a plate and it came in a bowl, it's really hard to balance your cutlery on a bowl. Staff were friendly too.

This is still a ‘proper’ pub that also does meals, as opposed to a restaurant that serves beer. The premises are unpretentious and unspoilt in a bit of an old fashioned way (not a criticism to my way of thinking). We were welcomed cheerfully and made to feel at home. A small choice of real ales were available to us (again, not a criticism, but a plus) and we were swiftly offered a taster of one that we had not come across previously. Two of chose a baguette for lunch and the other a sandwich. The baguettes came with a small side salad and a portion of chips. The sandwich and baguettes (each with a different filling choice) came extremely well filled and were nicely presented. The one with the hot filling was nicely hot. Prices were extremely reasonable and we are very likely to return.

Overall very good, starters 1st class, mains very good. Sweet menu all very similar and sadly limited, however overall a very pleasant experience.

Two of our party were vegan and they thought the menu and food excellent. I could easily have eaten what they had and I’m not vegan. Our food was also excellent.

We have visited this restaurant before and found it to be a pleasurable experience. We have always been impressed with the separate vegetarian/vegan options. However, on this most recent visit, it seemed as though we had stumbled upon a different place. On arrival I informed staff that we had booked a table. We were told to go and pick a table, so there was no specific one reserved. The menu did have a vegetarian/menu but not as extensive or as interesting as before. My starter of hummus was not the smooth & silky delight I had been expecting but was more like chunky mashed chick peas . Two of the main courses - sweet potato burger and a lion burger were OK, but nothing special. My main of marinaded portobello mushrooms was so overpoweringly flavoured with ginger that I only managed to eat a third of it. The predominant flavour of the seafood risotto was cheese. The clearing of the table was quite sloppy, napkins, cutlery and food were not cleared away before the dessert course. My ice cream again was nothing special and was unnecessarily decorated with what I thought were inedible silver balls. I didn't want to risk a dental accident by trying them. The most disappointing aspect of the evening was the fact that it was a special occasion. I had spoken to a young man on the phone to arrange a different start time and had told him that we would be celebrating our wedding anniversary and my husband's 70th birthday. In the event, no mention was made of it at all. I was not expecting any complimentary items but a mention of the occasion would not have gone amiss. I cannot understand the dramatic change in the service and standard since our last visit. A very underwhelming experience which we shall not be in a hurry to repeat. Such a shame.

When I arrived was informed I was too early to be taken to my table ( it was actually empty). Was advised to take a seat and waiter would come and take our drink order - waited half and hour and he did not arrive. Approached a waitress and was shown to table straightaway. The food and service was good, plenty of choice on the menu.

Went for my mum’s 80th birthday. A lovely little pub with a fantastic atmosphere. The staff who served us (Eleanor & Andrea) were delightful, they couldn’t do enough for us. The portions are a good size and the food is delicious. We’ll definitely be back. Try the honeycombe baked Alaska 👍👍👍

We had a lovely meal for our mum’s birthday. The golden lion catered especially for our little 2 year old granddaughter with a plain simple meal (I did ask in advance but they were very helpful). The staff very friendly and warm, the food was creative tasty attractively presented. It was quite busy so it was a little slow to arrive but worth the wait.

The staff were fantastic here this evening. Very accommodating to get a table sorted in a very busy bar area as we had a dog with us. Food delayed as extremely busy but that was not an issue at all. Real lovely feel to venue, food was excellent! Deffo will return and very soon. Thanks very much guys, great night had.

Excellent food and staff very attentive. <br /><br />The only issue was that we were dining on a Sat night (7.30) and the restaurant was full of noisy children. I really don&#039;t mind children being in Restaurants with parents but would have preferred somewhere quieter on Sat evenings. This is not a criticism as I could have asked at time of booking but an observation.

We had family Sunday lunch in the Golden Lion last weekend, the food &amp; service was fantastic. <br />I would highly recommend the Lion - it is our favorite place to go for drinks with friends or food with the family by far.

Had family visiting and wanted an early dinner as we were taking our 18 month old with us. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals and the staff were also very accommodating with our baby. <br /><br />We will definitely be coming back!

Traveled down from Liverpool to visit family and decided this time we had to try The Golden Lion, we were not disappointed our starters,main and dessert were delicious, the young girl who waited on our table was a delight, very friendly and informative,after our meal we went through and sat in the pub part for a couple more drinks, we wanted to tip Katy but when my husband went to pay the bill she was no where in sight which was disappointing for us because she deserved a tip,all in all a lovely night spent in the pub,

The whole experience was very enjoyable. The food was excellent, the service was friendly and efficient, the dining area is cosy and the ambience of the pub is very welcoming.

This is a lovely pub restaurant in a quiet little town. They boast a really decent vegan menu - the cottage pie was amazing and then the rice pudding was elevated beyond a home cooking staple by the presentation and the extras. My meat eating (difficult to impress) friend was also very pleased with her choices. My only comments in terms of improvement would be that some research into the vegan wine options would be very much appreciated, and also that at the end of the meal we would have appreciated more time to sit and chat without being brought the book then asked every 2 minutes if we would like to pay now (maybe we looked like likely suspects for a dine and dash?!). Overall we really enjoyed our evening with you, and will be back.

A friendly greeting when we arrived. The restaurant was not too busy so we were led to our table immediately. Our starters arrived after a short wait. My wife had the Pork &amp; Pistachio Terrine. She felt that the terrine was a little bland and there was not enough toast but she loved the Red Onion Marmalade. I had the Crispy Calamari and it was cooked to perfection. For our main courses my wife had the Nasi Goreng and she raved over it. I settled for the BBQ Blade of Beef and was not disappointed. Overall it was an excellent way to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

Exceptionally good food and great value for money. For me the blade of beef was tender, beautifully presented and the taste was fantastic, I could not fault it.

Disappointed at the lack of choice considering the extensive menu options they have in the restaurant. When we arrived at our table we were told we could only order from the one one menu. Either the four of us could order from the Xmas Menu or the normal bar/dinner menu. Nowhere prior to the booking was this mentioned to us; only when we arrived at our table. Considering we choose this restaurant because our party consisted of an 89 year old (very plain eater), a dairy free son and two adults (try anything); We thought we could order what we actually wanted; not the case! We really could not understand this policy as the restaurant was fairly empty for our booking at 7pm.<br />As this was my wife’s birthday celebration she choose the Xmas Vegan Menu as it made life easier for our son. Unfortunately this only left one real choice for our mother; the very large cottage pie ( she left most of it as it just wasn’t to her taste).<br />Overall we were disappointed with the night. The vegan menu was quite nice for the three of us but no good to our 89 year old. The inflexibility of the menu options was bonkers and we couldn’t understand why we couldn’t just eat and order what we wanted. The meal for the four of us cost £150 with drinks but we felt short changed as we know had we been able to order from the dinner menu we would have had a far better evening. We felt the most stupid issue was that had we been able to order from all of the menus we would have spent a lot more than the £150 so this menu policy is just crazy.<br />Had we known how inflexible this restaurant was going to be we would have booked elsewhere but as you only find out when you get seated at your table it’s very misleading.<br />We have always felt that the Golden Lion is one of the best places to eat it the area but on this occasion we have left feeling disappointed because of a silly menu policy.

Second visit and enjoyable again. Baguettes served with chips are a big meal! Really enjoyable and super value. Very helpful and friendly staff.

Arrived early and waited in the bar area for while. Service was excellent - just about the right length of time between courses. Very pleasant staff and good choice of food. The food was very well presented with the exception of the Golden Lion sundae which did not compare with the standard of the other food. Fairly expensive but well worth it. We would definitely go again.

We meet friends who live in Bristol here for lunch a few times a year and the welcome,service and food are always good.

I’ve never given 5* for a review before. I had high expectations after watching Dion two years in a row at the Newport food festival and having tasters of food he prepared in front of us as an audience.<br />This year they gave out a voucher, so an excuse to visit! <br />I went for date night with my partner, a fairly local pub for us. <br />As we approached the bar we were greeted and seen to, drinks in hand we made our way to comfy sofas to wait. Its didnt seem like waiting, we were able to enjoy our drinks in a relaxed, warm atmosphere with the buzz of other peoples concersation in the background. Given a menu to ponder, our orders were taken whilst still in the sofa. <br />A few moments later we were seen to our rable, coats taken for us and met with our starter. <br />Plentiful bread and olives platter to start with oils and butter. Shortly after our mains arrived, blade of beef with the poshest but tastiest mash ever with a gravy to leave you wanting more. And a steak with proper chips and tasty side sauce. <br />The portions were generous and we we did not feel rushed, nor asked about our food whilst with a mouth full (which always seems to happen). Ambience thoughout was lovely and the decor refreshing. Final check - the toilets, modern, clean and freshen up toiletries for the women which was a lovely touch. <br />We left wanting to return, possibly sooner rather than later to try out the desserts and other tempting dishes. <br />Thank you to the staff, two men and a women that served us you’re a credit the team and kitchen staff it goes with out saying you’re in the right job! <br />I would recommend this place for food to anyone!

Outstanding meal and excellent service all in a great location.

Stopped off on the way through and enjoyed an excellent pint - did not have time to sample the food which looked interesting on the menu.

Staff very good, the food was pretty good but one of us thought the fish was too dry. On learning of this complaint management came out and offered us all a drink, that was very kind but not necessary. We shall return.

Had our friends birthday party and meal here. Staff were lovely, very attentive and friendly. They allowed us space whilst we chatted but were always available when we needed drinks or were ready for our next course. Would highly recommend .

The service was friendly but slow. The beer was OK but the food was below par. I had the chef&#039;s favourite so was expecting something outstanding but unfortunately not. My partners chips tasted &quot;old&quot;.....I guess re-heated. The overall location and decor was good and toilets clean but I expected more from the food.

Best pub food in this area, without a doubt. Have been a few times now and have never been disappointed. The staff are very friendly and attentive, without being over-the-top. It is a little expensive, but as the saying goes - you get what you pay for!

We visited the Golden Lion for a pre-Mothers day lunch. The staff were very courteous and helpful, even getting a bulldog clip from behind the bar for my Mum to clip her napkin to her collar to stop it slipping down!<br />Our food was mostly excellent, the only issue being the Nasi Goreng was way too salty - so much so that neither Mum nor I could eat it all. I did bring it to the attention of the staff who apologised and offered to replace it, which was good. The desserts were awesome.<br />Overall, an excellent place to visit for lunch or dinner, good value for money too.

The manager asked the chef to come and discuss the various options for our meal as my wife is a diabetic and allergic to gluten. The meals we had were of excellent quality and quantity and beautifully presented. An evening to enjoy.

Stopped here for lunch after a local walk. Got caught out last time we were in the area on a Monday when it is closed! Good selection of baguettes which are large and served with chips and a salad, very reasonable at £5.95. Nice beer too.
