Good beer & shows the football & rugby 🍺

I attend the quiz on a weekly basis on Thursdays with friends; and have been doing so for months now. The staff are truly awesome and the quiz equally so. The ales are always top notch and the lagers the same. It's lovely to see a proper traditional pub still about.

We didn't have food on this occasion, but the music was amazing and the cosiness was great too

Looks nice from the outside, lovely brickwork, windows and signage, but is a bit soulless within. Nobody else drinking for the hour at lunchtime I was there. Not the pub's fault but I'm being asked to grade the atmosphere, so... 6X was fine, music was a really weird 90's mix of banging house and German rock ballads. The aspect and views out the windows were bleak. All in all an odd experience, sorry. Probably a great pub once full of sozzled punters and a live band 🤗

Hosted a family party here and Kev and the team were really accommodating. Everyone enjoyed themselves. They sorted a lovely snack buffet. Highly recommend!

Chanced upon the Lion when the boys from the band 45 RPM were playing their hearts out! Lovely welcome from the landlord offering napkins to clear our glasses (specs) 😎 on a chilly evening! From the Great music To the other customers, Steve and Heather, and Mike all making us feel so welcome. Add good beers and ciders - we had a great night to end our wet and windy little trip to Newbury! Storm Ciaran can go away now!

The Lion is a great pub just off the main high street in Newbury. Friendly atmosphere, great choice of drinks, comfortable seating and even a nice covered outdoor area for sunny days or smokers. The pub staff / owners are all great, as well as the regulars - all friendly and welcoming, and help to make The Lion feel how a pub really should feel. Tex/Mex food served from the kitchen - order at the bar - all freshly made and very tasty, usually happy to accommodate asks like extra soured cream or salsa. Often they’ll be showing live sports or live music on occasion, and we can’t recommend enough the pub quiz every Thursday; easily the best quiz in and around Newbury!

I was treated with Mexican burritos and was very authentic.

Nice pub situated in Newbury. Camra discount available to members, Cask marque certificate and good conditioned cask beer. I tried the vegetarian burrito and it was delicious. I would recommend, you might want to add some sides as the burrito is just the burrito and fillings. They serve food only on Thur Fri and Saturday...

Great for Rugby. Mexico snack food and real ales. Kev and Sam run it well. The occasional band too.

Friendly staff good ambience and nice choice of drinks. I was treated with Mexican burritos and was very authentic. This pub has a nice collection of ales. I received the best vodka martini that was ever tasted by me and made by Mr Kevin although they don't serve any cocktails.

As the 🌟 rating suggests, it's OK. No frills, like the food. Has a number of TVs for watching sport. Friendly punters.

My favourite pub in Newbury. Really welcoming staff, relaxed atmosphere and they put on some great bands too. Stoked that they've started selling food, I had the vegan nachos last night and they were banging.

Where do I start? The owners and the team are the kindest bunch. The pub is friendly, warm and cosy. The food…damn. They do tex-mex and it is INSANE. Best in town and probably most towns. I love this place, it’s a pub I want to spend money in and support, because there are one of very few businesses that give so much personal attention to their customers.

Quiz night was a lot of fun, decent selection of beverages available. I haven't tried the food yet so when I do I will update my review

Nice pub just off the main drag. Good decor and patio garden. Mostly Wadsworths ales though we tried and enjoyed a guest ale, Purple Moose's, Dark Side of the Moose.

I walk past this pub everyday and is always busy , beer garden looks lovely with the lights and barrel plants. My car actually wouldn’t start and Kieran couldn’t of been more helpful !! Went well out of his way and called people in to help. I got sorted and went on my way but whenever people ask where to go around the area I always tell them the lion!! My next night out in Newbury this will be my first stop 👍🏻

Nice beer, lots of tellies and Mexican food

It's always a joy visiting the Lion. Normally I'm there to see a live band. More recently was Christmas eve eve for the quiz. Great bunch behind the bar. The clientèle are mostly regulars and never a problem. The place is always clean and tidy. Reasonably priced drinks. Smoking area out the back. My girl and I find it a nice enough place to visit for a drink. And will always come back.

My first visit to The Lion was brilliant. Kevin and Julia were perfect - warm and welcoming. The beer was outstanding (and I have consumed a fair few pints of 6X!). Do visit this hostelry. It does what it says on the tin!

Enjoyed our first visit to The Lion on Saturday- sat at bar, chatty guy, good selection of real ales and REALLY good food! Clean, cosy, comfortable interior. Will return!

I don't want this recommendation to encourage any more punters to this establishment. Especially on Thursday nights when they carry out an enjoyable quiz for all. Unhelpfully for my cause, not only are the staff friendly but the other punters are unnecessarily nice too. Yes, I don't want this excellent pub to be more popular than it is. That would be terrible. If I don't get a table for the next quiz, I'm blaming YOU.

Amazing place, nice, clean and fresh. An amazing range of ales and gin. Good prices too! The owners are lovely and welcoming. Best pub I've been to in a long time.

The Lion pub is a nice local pub with friendly bar staff and a good atmosphere. On Thursday night the pub hosts arguably the best pub quiz in Newbury. The quiz runs from 8:30 - 11:00pm which is quite late for some, especially on a school night. The let down for me is the drink selection, in particular beer/draft ales which are very limited and often unavailable. We usually have to order a pint of ‘whatever is available’ which too often tends to be Fosters! It would be great to see some more things on tap and in stock. Just a shame because in other respects it’s a great pub.

Terrible service, the staff were rude and accused our party of criminal damage because we were strangers. No explanation or consideration just expulsion. Do not spend your money here, there are far more friendlier pubs in Newbury

This used to be a great little boozer but has gone seriously downhill lately. Never know what draft (if any) is going to be on. ale not great either. landlady loud and swears quite a lot. not what you expect.

A proper local town pub. Decent beer and pub grub. Sky and bt sport. Often has live music on Saturday night.

We popped in on a Saturday night for a pint and ended up staying. The welcome was very friendly and the beer excellent. There was a band playing in the front bar which was packed and the rear bar area had spare seating for those that preferred to talk.

Bar staff great fun to be around, Thai food is very, very good indeed and the young lady serving the food is a hoot! Its definitely worth a visit in my book, almost forgot the live music nights are well supported too. I will be going back again.

Been here once before and food was very good so we came back again. Though food was very good as before, the waitress was totally appalling. She stopped short of throwing the plates into our faces, and even asked one of my mates to " just eat and stop complaining". She also threw our plates on the table and asked us to sort ourselves out.
