The staff were good and the service was quick. The carrot cake was 5 star. The hot chocolate was a good size but not strong on chocolate. I have had many, much better hot chocolate. A lot more chocolate powder and some milk is required. Hence, the 4 star rating.

Delicious jacket potato and cakes. Coffee is lovely too. Not too noisy. Polite and friendly staff. The only thing that we find slightly odd - and a little bit worrying - is how slippery the floor is. It’s as if it’s been oiled…though it’s clearly clean…?

Dreadful service and food. Firstly the place stank of deep fat fryers. The staff were unattentive and didn't look at all pleased to see us. they were no that friendly. Two gormless girls who looked totally clueless and out of their depth. The food was sub standard we all had Fish and chips .The large fish was absolutely tiny and no bigger than the small portion ordered. the mushy peas weren't even mushy peas they were disgusting all watery with no flavour. The tartare sauce was not even a sauce just great big chuncks of gherkins and mayonaise. It had not been blended. All the time throughout the meal having to call the lack lustre, lethargic staff for things including clearing the table our bill, cutlery, sauces etc... Hardly a smile in sight ! We had a long wait for our over priced food. All in all a very poor experience with lousy service and food . Thoroughly dissapointing.

Food freshly made with good quality ingredients. Staff were kept very busy with indoor and outdoor seating as there were only two of them. You were allowed to take time over your food which made for a relaxed experience.

Quite expensive for what it’s worth. Also, they add the service charge to your bill *before* asking you if you’d like to include it, basically forcing you to accept the fee since it’s already there. That’s not how you treat customers.

Overpriced for what you get. This place seems to have gone downhill recently and I won’t be visiting again. Not particularly friendly or helpful staff and overpriced at £12 for 2 coffees and hot cross buns served with a portion of cheap margarine which tasted disgusting. When I mentioned this to the staff they did replace my bun and gave me a portion of butter although they didn’t seem very keen to do so. It would have been nice to have been given a choice when I ordered. I shall be going to the cafe at Peterley from now on as it’s far superior.

I arranged with a friend to meet at The Limes this afternoon as it is half way between where we both live. We had checked online that the cafe was open until 5 as my friend couldn’t get there until 3.30 after work. On arrival it was very obvious by the attitude of the staff that our visit was an inconvenience. This made me confirm that the closing time was 5pm. I was told by a sullen member of staff that they normally close at 5 but as they were quiet they were closing at 4. They did serve me with a drink and my friend, who arrived minutes later was served also. Unfortunately the member of staff forgot her order for a cake and she was served this on request about 15 minutes later. At precisely 4 pm one of the members of staff started stacking chairs onto the table very loudly. A chair fell off making go a loud noise. It was very distracting and added to the utterly miserable atmosphere in the cafe. Another member of staff asked Alexa to stop playing the music and it became very obvious that we were not welcome. We left and finished our catch up at Peterlee Cafe. The welcome couldn’t have been more different. We were met by a lovely smiling member of staff who made us very welcome and confirmed that although the cafe closed at 5 and it was by now 4.30 it was no problem at all. We were not ushered out at 5 and any tidying up was done very discreetly by the staff. What a difference. I would not recommend The Limes and suggest that for a warm welcome and excellent customer service Peterlee Cafe is far superior.

Went today for mothers day took my mother in law. We arrived a bit earlier than our booking time no issues our table was ready. Staff very pleasant myself and my partner had the roast beef it was lovely and plenty off it. Puddings very nice. And the starter that my partner had. One slight issue my mother in law had the lamb she found it tough but didn't want to make a fuss. I mentioned it when paying the bill just so they are aware for the future the lady who was possibly in charge said my feedback will be passed onto the chef . All in all a lovely experience and will definitely return 🙂

This is a lovely tea room to visit for brunch, lunch or afternoon tea and a slice of cake. We’ve frequented the cafe before and after the change in management and the recent changes have resulted in much improvement. The decor has been updated and the dishes now have more thought in the presentation, variety and taste. We take our dog and tend to sit in the corner which is nice and out of the way. There is lots of space between tables so you don’t feel crammed in and the staff are very friendly and attentive. Also great that it is located on the site of a garden centre and DIY shop so you can pick up anything you need and there is ample parking.

3 of us pre-booked and pre-ordered Christmas dinner at the Limes Tea room. Two had the turkey dinner (very generous portions); and one the trout (sea trout - so more like a salmon fillet than a bony trout!). The vegetables were cooked to perfection. Wonderful food to find at a cafe.

This is an established cafe venue on a site that has a garden centre and gardening supplies shop; a hardware store (still with loose screws and nails!), a wonderful kitchen and china shop; and a gift shop that always has interesting possibilities. The cafe changed management recently and the menu now offers more substantial meals and variety than before but is still somewhere you can buy a cake and a cuppa or a sausage roll if that is what you seek. (We did!) The extension to the older part of the cafe means that there is a covered conservatory area that provides very good ventilation. The door between the conservatory and the cafe was also providing ventilation to the cafe. The Limes now offers breakfasts (varied menu), Lunches (including daily specials), a very interesting range of cakes and snacks; and Sunday lunch. There should be something to keep everyone happy in the cafe and there is so much to see throughout the site.

The day we ate here was my husband's birthday, and a good fry up is his favourite meal. Because our usual place was closed, I phoned Hildreth's café to ask if they did an all day breakfast. The lovely lady on the phone assured me that they did and we could just turn up without booking. When we arrived, we were told we could choose where to sit - which was reassuring, considering it was such a hot September day. We were both pleasantly surprised by the large all day breakfast. The sausages in particular were really tasty/good quality and the egg yolks were a beautiful golden, orangey colour - a clear indicator of local farm fresh eggs. The decoration was enchanting and the ambience calming and relaxing. It was also very clean and tidy with well spaced out table and chairs. We would not hesitate to go back for another lovely breakfast and might do it more often, considering we shop there too. We are a couple of fusspots when it comes to eating out, so rest assured, this lovely café is a perfect place to eat out. On a final note: how lovely for the locals to be able to shop at Hildreth's and then go for a breakfast or a lunch.

Came here for lunch bc of great reviews but both of us were "underwellmed", put it mildly. Coffee was good. The food was freshly cooked but tastewise just ok, maybe we were unlucky with our choices. My falafel wrap came with super spicy chilly-like red pepper that i could not even eat. Nothing on the menu suggested it was this hot (and I am usually ok with spicy food). My husband Lasagne didnt even look like one - mushy mass swimming in tomato sauce. It tasted ok but should not be called Lasagne. Dontthink we will be coming again

We used to frequent Hildreth's tea rooms and get lovely 'English fayre' at reasonable prices, we used to queue for a table with all the hussle & bussle of a busy lunch-time 'restaurant'. We used to get a reasonable plate of freshly cooked fayre with lots of 'proper' vegetables (cabbage, greens, diced carrots & even garden peas). Now ... argh! We visited yesterday to find plenty of empty tables and a menu more in keeping in an expensive London eaterie? Gone was all the English fayre and replaced with overpriced, undercooked sparse-on-the-meat 'faddy-food'. I ordered what was effectively a shepherd's pie (but with a very fancy description) only to get a small pre prepared pot of soup with mashed potato on top (I counted just 2 pieces of meat in my pot. Accompanying this were a miniscule portion of undercooked green beans and 4 baby carrots. Mum had the sausage & mash - 3 quite unpleasant-tasting sausages on a mountain of mashed potato surrounded by a moat of gravy. We will definitely be avoiding Hildreth's 'The Limes Tea Rooms' in the future - which will have a knock on effect with the garden centre as ... no decent eaterie on site gives no reason to go out of our way to visit. The waiting staff were very pleasant and they still allowed us in with the dog - but without the 'olde-traditional' menu that we all loved - sorry but it a NO from us. Don't get me started on the prices - they've gone way North - message to the new owner ... change back to the good olde English fayre, please, and bring your prices back down to reality?

We are regulars at The Kitchen Larder and Rachel and the team have continued to maintain their very high standards. Most food is locally grown or sourced and is of a very high quality. We normally order and collect to eat at home and can recommend the Smoked Avo, Salmon and egg salad! We have also used the Kitchen Larder for Corporate Catering and the food selection and presentation was outstanding. The KL also has a stunning selection of small scale producer sourced foods.
