The Laundry in Lambeth

This place is pretty average in terms of food, atmosphere and service. There are too many hidden charges, even when booking which puts locals like me off. A £35 pp cancellation charge is extortionate for the area - this isn’t exactly a Michelin-starred restaurant, or a small family run place that warrants that kind of cancellation charge. The normal canx change for the area is £10. The extra charge for water and ‘extras’ to make your meal a full meal, reeks of entitled gentrification. There is rather basic atmosphere - it doesn’t feel like a true Brixton venue. Fine if you want an overpriced lunch / brunch with most tables outside and to say you visited a firmer washhouse. Avoid if you want a decent meal and to experience Brixton properly. Won’t be going back.

The laundry opened just before Covid struck, and has now established itself as one of the destination places in Brixton. Unsurprisingly from the name, it is an old laundry building, early Edwardian with beautiful early 20th century design cues, and they’ve made a good attempt at blending original with new ‘industrial chic’ interior design.. this is a great place to hang out for drinks and cocktails or have brunch or dinner with its ‘open all day’ kitchen. The a la carte menu is very fairly priced and with daily specials. I went with three friends on a Tuesday evening, where you can bring your own wine with no corkage. They were very helpful, providing us with fine glassware to accompany our fine wines and we ate a very nice two course meal. A great kitchen team and a very customer focused and friendly front of house team, delivers a very nice experience. As we took our own wines, I didn’t sample their wines on this occasion, but a glance at the wine list shows some very interesting wines by the glass and the bottle, both classics and vanguardist wines Highly recommended

Came here in a large birthday group for the first time a few weeks previously, was very happy impressed with the how the staff looked after us and the quality of the food, so decided on an off chance to give it another go. We were not disappointed-we hadn’t booked but we’re welcomed by Annette, she was our waitress and looked after us amazingly, making us feel welcomed and relaxed the whole time, nothing was too much for her, she had time, and a great knowledge, recommending dishes, what a fabulous lady, a wonderful asset to the company, can’t think I’ve been more impressed by a waitress/waiter AND the food in one place, this is so worth the hours drive from my house! Love it 😍

We went there because a friend who lives in Brixton chose this restaurant because of a bring your own bottle without corkage option one night midweek. We are a wine club group, always looking for a place where you can bring your own bottles. The service was attentive, although we were all shocked by the 15% service charge. I went without a starter. I had the duck with orange but there were no visible vegetables. Just undercooked duck neatly arranged and a few slices of orange. I was a bit disappointed. Somebody else had steak and chips. It looked okay. They complained their steak was tough, but I cannot verify that. I tried a chip. I liked the chips. I opted for dessert. The passion fruit ice cream had by another sounded interesting but I could not remember anything afterwards about my dessert. My husband seemed happy with the final price The location is good. The toilets are downstairs but the stairs were ok. Brixton is a fun location. The food was unexciting but we had a good evening starting with a Champagne for our birthday boy and trying all our different wines so the place served its purpose. I wish I had mentioned that we had a birthday as I later read that they bring out something with a candle.

A wonderful dinner! I had a dinner for a large group in the semi private dining area downstairs. The space was perfect and the sharing dishes were nicely presented and delicious. The staff were lovely, looked after us really well and offered drinks to people on arrival. I would definitely recommend

Our table wasn't ready and once we had ordered Sunday roast it took 50 minutes for the food to arrive. Some of the veg was hots, some tepid, some almost cold. We were told "hey guys you can have extra veg for free!" - the portions we were given were so small we immediately ordered more which duly arrived with the comment " hey guys here's you FREE veg"!!! You can't give tiny portions then tell diners we give you "free extra veg" - it's not free - it's what you should have included anyway. " Discretionary service charge" was added to the bill meaning it's hardly discretionary When we paid were were told AGAIN for a 3rd time "hey guys I hope you enjoyed your meal, especially all the "free extra veg"

Nice room and nice table, service also good. But very overpriced. Food was nice but you may as well go to the ivy for three courses for the same price as a main. Service also 15%.

Good food. I had the fillet steak and was very tasty. My friends had the pork belly which I tried and was very good too. Staff were friendly but service was slow unfortunately.

Big Family Birthday Sunday lunch. Food all excellent - and all the veggies were perfect... especially the roasties. Roasted pumpkin was delicious. All veggies seasoned well and the cauliflower cheese addictive. Roast Sirloin was delicious. They served the cake we'd brought with plates etc.. Drinks excellent - service superb. They know their jobs well. Lots of smiles. Nothing too much trouble. The building it's in is worth a visit on it's own. Not cheap - but excellent. You get what you pay for.

We came on a Sunday a couple of weeks ago. We were sat outside under a marquee, which despite its best efforts, meant we paid over forty pounds per person to sit on a metal chair in the blowing wind. The staff I will first add, are very attentive and friendly. We enjoyed the venue because of them. The food was average on the whole. Meat was tasty, and a fair portion. Veg was fine, but you could get additional if required. The gravy unfortunately was like water. I'm not sure if that is so they can keep their promise of unlimited refills on gravy, or if they lack cornflour to thicken it up. Now on to the grabby extra charges added to the bill. This is an example from one of the couples in our group. Yorkshire puddings are not included with pork roasts, so that's £1.50 extra. Cauliflower cheese for one is £4 extra. £1 is charged for water, which goes to charity. Service charge is FIFTEEN percent. So for a one course roast, that's £30.48. I'm sorry, but the additional charges take this place from being pricey to extortionate. As I say, the food was good, and I would pay £30 for a roast in an upmarket pub or central hotel, but I will not pay £30 for a roast to sit on a chair out in the wind in Brixton.

Very relaxed friendly service - great brunch - good selection of wines - nice atmosphere- ideal for a Saturday lunch time get together and the price was very reasonable too.

Six of us went for a Sunday brunch to celebrate a birthday and had a lovely time. Food was really good and interesting (I got the cornbread with corn salsa and avocado), staff were lovely and went above and beyond by bringing out a surprise birthday cookie and ice cream. 2 of the group ordered espresso martinis and were chuffed to get another round for free after they were made by accident. Lots of tables are on the terrace (although you can book indoors) so thoughtful touches like having blankets on hand go a long way. Their private room downstairs looks fab, so hope to book that for a party soon!

Friday evening with a friend, great cocktails and lovely atmosphere outside in the hot weather. The staff were amazing, I can’t stress how friendly and attentive they were.
