The Lancer in North Hertfordshire

Food was nice, but smaller portions than others and was extremely disappointed with only getting 4 pieces of chicken in one of the dishes. This was takeaway that was also 25mins late even when ordered in advance

My family and I have tried out nearly all of the indian restaurants in Stevenage, Baldock, Hitchin & Letchworth and regard the Lancer as one of the best in the area. As a result, we have become regulars here even though we live in Stevenage. The poppadom chutney tray is good, there are a range of mild to spicy curries for all tastes, the service is great, the lamb is tender, the portions are good, cobra on draught, on Sundays and Wednesdays they have great deals on. I would highly recommend the lancer.

Here again with my mum. The chef is brilliant here and it's one of my now favourite Indian restaurants (better than many in Leicester, Birmingham, and Rusholm). We had the prawn balti and prawn korma with a few sides. Food always cooked to perfection. Highly recommended. Service always brilliant and speedy every time we've come. Do try it if you're passing or live nearby.

Ordered online for delivery. Meal for three. Delivery took ages even taking into consideration it was a Saturday night..and we had to telephone to see what was going on. One rice order was different to that ordered. Onion bhajis were dry and overcooked. Naan bread burnt on one side .Dhansak was extremely hot for what we expected but I suppose they vary. Sorry but disappointed and not happy as our guest paid for the order on our suggestion as we thought this was a runner up in Curry awards and would be great...maybe it's better as a sit down restaurant but we won't be going.

I went to the lancer and it been a delight and has always the best food in the whole of Baldock the staff are very friendly and very caring people would come again

We were with friends (4 of us). Reception when we arrived was very friendly and service for drinks came soon after. Our main order was too long and the food was absolutely superb.

1st time eating here and will be the last , took 20 min to get a drink to us , took 1hour 40 min to get food to the table and there was only 4 others in the restaurant, they seemed more concerned about the takeaway side of things food had no taste chicken over cooked all the dishes seem to have all the same sauce on , lots of flies buzzing about not good at all very unhappy customers

We went to the Lancer tonight and there were only four other people in there. We ordered drinks and had to wait 25 minutes for them and some of us didn't even get a drink! We ordered food and that took 50 minutes to arrive. The food was absolutely awful I was so annoyed I refused to pay for my food and left. I have never been out to eat and never not paid for food until today! They seemed more worried about getting takeaways out of the door than feeding the people sitting in. I definitely will never be going back there again.

Unfortunately The Lancer let me down this time. I usually eat in the restaurant and have no issues and the food is amazing always … , but ordering takeaway is a nightmare - I’ve ordered takeaway twice now and had problems both times. This last time was the worst… ordered my online takeaway at 8.15pm, by 9.30pm no sign of it (they advise that it can take 60 minutes). So I called the restaurant thinking the driver was maybe lost, only to be told that our food had been cooked but there was no driver so our food was still in the restaurant!! Apparently they were very busy… it’s a Saturday night so would always be busy in there so that’s not good enough. When I complained, the manager, who said he’s not normally there, assured me that a driver would be sent immediately - so my food arrived eventually 1 hour 45 mins after I ordered it, it was not warm obviously , and I wasn’t hungry now ! If I had not rung to complain, when and would I have even got my takeaway? More importantly, this person had promised me a refund of my whole order which never happened despite me emailing The Lancer 10 days ago…. Hence now they’re getting this very negative review and I will Never order from The Lancer again (they’re not my local)

Lovely staff and great food! Kitchen does not use nuts either which is perfect (and incredibly rare) for nut allergy sufferers!

Dinner was great, all came very hot, prompt and tasty. Service great too. Ricky was a ray of sunshine.

Everything was fine except they have GURUDWARA DARBAR SAHIB photo on the wall and people enjoying alcohol there which is not acceptable. They should remove that asap.

First time eating here but definitely won't be the last. Efficient online booking and easy to rearrange time wise. Lovely traditional decor in bright colours in a clean tidy environment. Ricki looked after us really well. Poppadoms and pickles to begin, the chilli lime pickle was just so good 👍. Dopiaza for me, and honey mango chicken for Mrs W, both meals superb. Plus point is doing 0% Cobra, got to have a beer with a curry. Highly recommended and will be back before long.

Went last night with my partner and we both had a lovely meal, outstanding food especially the lamb vindaloo. Nice cold beer and brilliant service from ricki, will definitely return to this lovely restaurant.

Visited here with my family on a very busy Wednesday night. Despite us being a large party of 7 we were really well looked after from start to finish. The food is exceptional and the banquet is such good value for money. Starter, main, side and a choice of rice or bread for just £15 (on Wednesday’s and Sunday’s). There were so many highlights but a shout out for the mixed starters, chicken tikka masala (it is amazing here), mushroom bhaji and Saag paneer. I will let the pictures do the talking. Great choice of wines and the Pinot Grigio blush at under £16 was refreshing, light and a bargain price. The one element which elevates this restaurant above all others was our waiter Ricki. Warm, friendly, genuine and a real laugh too. He really did make our night out so special for all my family and I. We will come back again in the hope of seeing him and to enjoy all the wonderful food, with the chance of trying some different dishes. I travelled down from Manchester and have never experienced such a wonderful waiter as this who really cares for his customers. Thanks Ricki and all the team for such a lovely evening.

Visited on a Saturday night ,Restaurant was busy ,sat down 20mins later offered drinks,then 45mins later they took our food order whilst in the mean time walking past us was a conveyer belt of just eat orders going out the door we eventually got our starters cleared them away when finished then 10 mins later asked us if we were waiting for our starters overall the food was okay whilst all this was going on approx a table of ten arrived behind us who liked the sounds of their own voices to extent the acoustics made it difficult for us to converse overall just eat takeaway was more important than the restaurant customer experience we will not be returning

Had a fabulous meal at the Lancer. The service was friendly and the food was stunning. They are trying really hard to make the food they serve look and taste amazing and they are succeeding. The menu was traditinal but with a twist for some great sounding dishes. We even had a couple of dishes not on the menu yet so can't wait to go back and try more. Defo give it a try.

We’ve eaten in the restaurant a fair few times as the food is fab, but not in my recent takeaway. The lamb pieces, far too big pieces, in the Lamb Bhuna were very fatty and hard to even cut in half to eat. Very disappointing…. We won’t order a takeaway again and spend the money here. Do theyuse a different chef for the takeaways than for the restaurant maybe?

Fairly normal Indian menu but well presented and authentic flavours. Staff delightful.

This is with out a doubt one of the best Indian restaurants I have ever eaten in. The food is always fresh and hot. A great menu choice the staff are always friendly and helpful nothing is to much trouble for them.ive also had takeaways from them .every thing I order is always in the bag nothing missing always hot and always a reasonable waiting time. Shocking service went there after a recommendation after an hour we had 4 drinks & 4 poppadoms......no sign of any one asking to take our order when we left their excuse was its a Saturday night we're busy, not acceptable I'm afraid. Although the just eat take away service was a lot better than the restaurant maybe that's more important now!!!!

This place is the best of the best .. Amazing food and service that is way beyond expectations. Not over priced but very reasonable. They look after us every time but especially when I took the family in for a truly fantastic evening. Alam and the other waiters are so nice .

I went on a quiet night in fact I was the only person there after a table of 6 left. The food was piping hot (not in a spicy way) and tasty. Worth looking out for when they have a deal on as it was quite expensive for a small town with at least 5 other competitors. Tbh, I prefer the atmosphere in the other restaurants but that is MY opinion.

Exceptional curry and exceptional staff. I highly recommend the chicken tikka dansak and lamb madras! Best bindi I’ve ever had too. Can’t fault any of the food or the lovely staff! We will definitely be going back!

Seven of us came here for the first time last Sunday, and we were warmly welcomed an shown to a table and quickly brought drinks. We had poppadoms and generous trays of dips which included lime pickle, a favourite of mine. The mains soon arrived and everyone was really pleased with their choice, my son who isn't a fan of Indian food absolutely loved his chicken balti and has now been converted. I thoroughly recommend The Lancer and will definitely be visiting again

Sadly have to edit my previous 5* review. Ordered today at 18:15, arrived at 20:21. Estimated delivery was 45mins and it took over two hours! They didn't even ring me to say it would be late. Dreadful.

Don’t understand the negative reviews. We went here monthly but since the new management, food was delicious and even the house wine was nice. We had three separate waiters, all of which were super helpful, very nice, attentive and didn’t feel rushed. Would happily go again. There’s mention of outdated restaurant?
