We booked here for a sunday dinner and it was beautiful very large portions, beautifully cooked and warm. Nice range of vegetables with even a creamy leek addition which was unexpected but lovely. My husband had the Black Forest gateau for afters and loved that also.

Went for dinner here with my partner on our camping trip in Wales. I am gluten free and was happy to see the menu had allergen labelling (V / VG / GF). We initially ordered the nachos to start however were later told they weren't gluten free and had been labelled wrong on the menu. We had the lamb koftas instead which were absolutely delicious! I had the beef brisket loaded chilli fries (GF) which was so tasty and a huge portion! My partner had the dirty burger and really enjoyed it. Would come back again as the food was great!

My wife and I dropped in on our few days break in Mid Wales. The food was absolutely top drawer. My wife ordered a dirty burger and I had a Chicken Tikka Massala. We didn't have to wait for very long. Both meals were absolutely delicious, full of flavour. We would definitely go back again when we are in the area.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Lovely pub. Steady flow of customers on a wet Tuesday afternoon. My wife & I had drinks (Carling & a Pink Gin/Lemonade). We also ordered food and was advised that the chef was a little backed up so expect a short delay. All handled perfectly and still arrived, piping hot in a timely manner. Hunters Chicken loaded fries for me and Beef Lasagna for my wife. All beautifully prepared and delicious

After a long walk with the hound stopped off for a bite to eat on way home. Large benched area outside and dogs welcome . Ordered a jacket potato with tuna mayo (£8) and loaded beef chilli fries (£12) . Whilst the jacket potato was tasty it could have been warmer whilst the loaded fries were excellent and would have fed 2 ( only slightly more expensive than the dross served in Cornwall reviewed below) . Staff were attentive without being overbearing.

It’s frustrating when you look at the menu on line then make choices in anticipation for when you arrive. I was looking for Gammon and Egg or meat pie when looking at the online menu The evening menu given to us did not had have these available. I was disappointed to start with So had to order differently I started with sticky ribs These were not fresh probably two days old you certainly needed a good set of teeth to get over the chewy texture. Served on a bed of coleslaw which was delicious . For mains the drunken burger with pulled shredded pork chips onion rings. The burger did not have texture of fresh minced beef it was more like a puck from ice hockey ring. The pulled pork was very dry. My other half had Lasagne with chips and a tossed salad All in all a disappointing evening out

Basic accommodation, great location We stayed for one night and found the location fantastic and the staff really friendly. We ate in the restaurant and the food was lovely too. But the accommodation really does need a clean and an update. Windows were moulding, blinds broken, radiator had paint peeling off. Chair was broken, mattress was lumpy, bathroom Lino peeling off, toilet roll holder broken and the shower was full of mould. There was no mirror in the bedroom. Also bathroom sink was tiny and had timer taps. This was room 3, I hope the others were nicer! If we had been staying longer we would have complained or left, but since it was only £75 and one night, we just got in with it, but I wouldn’t be staying again.

Dropped in here as are usual place was closed. Nice open fire, as we were soaked due to welsh weather, nice touch, Large TV in bar area. We didn't book so 3 of us asked for a table, to our disappointment it wasnt anyway near the fire...lol to which we were escorted to another separate part of restaurant. No hot chocolate machine!! No Coca Cola just Pepsi. Scanning menu came across expensive £15 per meal! Until I found the LOADED FRIES page. They were £9.99 meals...bit more like it. I wasn't disappointed either...Good sized portions, the BEAN CHILLI was superb, and they had the hunters chicken, which was equally very well cooked and presented.. I asked to see dessert menu, which 1st glance the choices looked good but not the price £6.95. Always busy here which is a good sign, staff very pleasant tho. Would try again all said and done.

The pub itself was busy at the bar as football was being shown, the dining room is in a separate room, which is a good idea, whoever felt that you sometimes got forgotten about by the staff as they were busy on the bar, the food was good and was reasonably priced.

We were rather disappointed with our experience. There wasn’t much room at the tables, they were rather squashed together and we felt ‘crammed in’. The service, though quick, was lacking in the pleasantries department. No smiles, food and drink plonked down in a hurry, rather than placed down with a smile! The beef, though flavourful, was fatty and hard to cut and the vegetables were hard and nothing special. The coffee was down right awful! We won’t be going back.

I booked to have dinner at The Crown and as the chef was unwell my booking was transferred to the Lamb and Flag. It was obvious from the moment I walked into the pub that it wasn't for me but there were no tables available anywhere else. The pub was dirty, it needed a good clean, bar, floors, tables everything. I stood at the bar and waited and waited while young bar staff talked and laughed completely ignoring me. Eventually a female from behind the bar showed me a table. It was so small my dinner plate barely fitted. The table was next to the door to the kitchen and staff continually banged the door as they went in and out, it was almost unbearable. I did ask for a different table, apparently that wasn't possible. To make this nightmare even worse there were a group of young people shouting and screaming in the bar at a game of some sort, that went on for 20 minutes. I was given a menu and I asked if there were gluten free options available. The waitress had no idea about gluten free and suggested that most food was gluten free. I gave up and ordered a plain steak and salad. Absolutely the worst experience.

Great location in the centre of the pretty little town of Rhayader, Powys near shops, bars, leisure centre and car parks. Our room was spacious and the beds were comfortable. There was a TV plus tea and coffee making facilities. The shower was really powerful. We had dinner here and spent most of the night drinking in the bar. Visited the area for one week and kept migrating back to this great welsh pub. The staff are its greatest asset, followed closely by the food. Dogs welcome. Food delicious and fairly priced. The only downer, is the closeness to passing traffic. But you cant have it all ways, traffic needs to use the road and it quietens down significantly in the evening. If you are in the area, try it. You wont be disappointed.

We hadn't booked lunch so were pleased to find there were tables available outside under a canopy. My partner had steak baguette with salad and chips - the steak cooked exactly the way she'd asked, and I wanted roasted veg baguette rather than roast veg pizza, and they made one up for me. At £7.95 each, served with really good chips and a nice dressed salad, we thought it excellent value for money. There was a wait for food, understandably as it was freshly prepared to order; drinks were brought promptly; and the staff were friendly. The pub was well managed for Covid safety too.

Stopped off on route back from seaside. 4 adults a teenager and a child, All very hungry. Reserved a table while on route and the helpful staff guaranteeing we would have one reserved. Arrived an hour later to a table waiting. All good so far. Waiting to make our order seemed to take an age though they were quite busy so this can be forgiven. Drinks arrived at our table promptly and correct followed by a 45 minuet wait for the food. Drunken cow Burger - A Very tasty beef burger with beef brisket and blue cheese in a Brioche bun, chips, salad and a pot of coleslaw. For a hungry person this meal isn't fully satisfying and would benefit from about double the amount of chips. (About 10 on the plate) Not worth £10.95Huntsman burger - Equally delicious and tasty burger with chicken breast, bacon BBQ sauce and mozzarella Plated the same as the Drunken cow with the same sides. Again not enough Chips for a hungry person. Not worth £9.958oz Rump - Tasty, cooked exactly as asked and Plentiful on the plate. Peppercorn sauce was a great addition. not the best value at £14.95Gammon steak - large Gammon Steak, egg, pineapple with plenty of chips and salad. Probably the best value meal we had at £9.95. If you like gammon you cant go wrong. Kids Pizza - This turned out just to be Half a cheese and tomato Pizza with a very dry and over done base. No Chips. No sides. pretty awful. We didn't realise it wasn't with chips and had to order them as an extra... Thankfully the extra chips turned up in a few minuets. £5.50 for this nastiness is truly disappointing. We asked for sauces and between 7 of us we were given 4 ketchup and 4 mayonnaise sachets. asking for more saw the member of staff disappear inside and not return. Just shy of £100 for 6 adult meals 1 child mean and drinks puts Lamb and flag down the bottom of the list of places we will return to. Especially as some of us left unsatisfied.

We've stayed in The Lamb & Flag inn since Ty Morgans was full and eaten at The Crown. Food at the Crown was ok general pub food. Staff was friendly, however the rooms were very basic and needed a lot of TLC. It was clean enough, however beds and pillows were not comfortable, teas in the room with not much variety plus looked old, bathroom cold and bland, decoration very dated. To be honest I must confess that I have stayed in better Youth Hostels plus the price was exaggerated comparing to the quality of the rooms (70£ for one night nothing else included). Also, this is close to a noisy road where there was a fight outside the pub yesterday night. A big frustrating bit is that there are no car parks, only paid ones at walking distance which the parking permit only renews daily so you need to wake up at 8am to renew for your car.

Our dog was brought a bowl of water on request and we found it a very pleasant experience sitting outside in the late afternoon sunshine.I see that previous reviewers have criticised the food. Nice.Felt like we were trying to sleep in a shed placed on the carpark.Very noisy over night as close to the road. Even noisier in the morning when everyone sorts out the empties in the bins etc. We all had a crap nights sleep. We did go for breakfast in associated cafe called Ty Morgan next morning (very closeby) and that was superb. Quality fod well cooked and delicious coffee. We had a meal in the restaurant. The restaurant itself was fine and comfortable/smart. Food was ok but nowt to rush back for. Mixed grill was all well done even when steak was asked to be medium rare. Not even close. Chicken curry was very oily. Others in our group had pie which was good. We had a very good pub meal, served by friendly staff who were respecting the Covid guidelines well. The breakfast in the sister pub Ty Morgans was excellent - they serve the most amazing full breakfast and coffee. The rooms are clean but basic rooms, as is common with this type of accommodation in Wales. We visited Rhayader to walk the Elan valley trail and stayed overnight in Rhayader. Upon arriving late afternoon we visited for just a drink outside. We were very impressed by the safety measures in place, including a one way system, leaving of contact details for all who entered the pub as well as staff wearing masks and regular cleaning of tables. Fast forward to the evening where we felt this would be a safe place to eat and wow what a difference a few hours can make! The bar staff seemed to have had a changeover and this time we were not asked to leave any details upon arriving, then we were taken to our table that was occupied and when the people on it were asked to vacate the table was not cleaned for us, this was the start of where the evening was to head. Despite there being a one way system in place, numerous locals who by now filled up the outside area at The lamb and flag as well as the grounds of their sister pub opposite, The Crown, the majority ofthese seemed intent on going against the one way systems in place every time they entered or left the pub, in doing so they seemed to relish the fact they they were having to almost brush against us at our table every time and never using the hand sanitiser on offer, when entering or leaving to order drinks. As stated in a previous review there was definitely an attitude from the locals to tourists visiting the pub and they were clearly going out of their way to make our visit uncomfortable. We spent probably around 90 minutes eating and drinking here and during that time I would guess the small space behind our table that shouldn’t have been used to enter/exit the pub was walked past on at least 20 occasions. In the current climate this behaviour is dangerous and if deliberate then very irresponsible. We will not be returning here as it was a very unpleasant experience, and if others are looking for a safe environment to visit post lockdown then I would think twice about visiting here!

Staff were friendly and helpful but some of the locals together outside (approximately 15+ people) made rude comments about tourists which was out of order. Definitely no social distancing whatsoever by them which was made worse by having to go past them to enter the pub.

Just been here for a meal. Good decent pub grub. Limited menu due to corvid which is understandable. I had the rump steak and my wife had the fish and chips which was very fresh and tasty. I asked for med/rare but it’s was medium to be fair. still tasty and all things considered the staff were pleasant and I would love to return when the full menu is back on as the lamb dish sounded great

Stopped in for Sunday lunch. it was very nice with a good range of vegetables to choose from. The offer of the vegetarian option was also nice as it can be difficult to find a Sunday lunch that serves a vegetarian option. The only slight let down was the mash was a little cold. But this did not ruin the over all meal as everything else was cooked perfectly! Wonderful staff and a nice cosy atmosphere on a slightly chilly day.

Had lunch here when visiting family (we have tried 3 places in Rhayader). Just couldn't work out what was going on with decor! Typical boring pub from outside followed by a strange American feel in the bar (metal chairs??), cosy bistro area by fire and through to a corporate meeting place dining area?! I have since seen that they have updated the dining area and it looks great (except the meeting room chairs are still there!) but it's still such a strange mash up of areas! It'd be a great place if the new theme ran through and it was actually given some curb appeal. Food was amazing. Reasonably priced, great selection, piping hot and mouth watering. Bar/waiting staff on hand but I suppose due to them not being very busy.Overall, a great place to eat and reasonably priced (if you want a £6 meal, go to tesco) but significantly let down by exterior and tired looking bar area. This has the potential to be a great restaurant if not for some oversights.

Stayed one night. Pub noise was loud late into the night it was a Friday in December One of the drunks set the fire alarm off . Staff could sort it out kept going off. Finally sorted. 1230 noise finally abated .room quite nice and clean. My mattress was thin and could feel slats underneath . Slept ok as I was so tired after long drive and long emotional day .Breakfast wasnt included in the room price of £70. And was a walk down the road at another establishment. I didn't bother .Oh and the bathroom floor was wet from a leaking toilet! .nice town stay elsewhere

Visited here for lunch meeting friends - Rhayader is sort of half way between Hereford and Aberystwyth! Welcomed by lovely staff Kylie, who was very helpful and friendly and was very knowledgeable about the dishes on the menu. All four of us ordered something different - beef chilli, shrilankan veg curry, chicken and leek pie and jacket potato with chilli. All the food was delicious, homemade and good sized portions. Unfortunately too full to sample puddings. After our meal we moved to sit by the lovely open fire. Very comfortable and Kylie waited on us serving wine and coffee on demand and ensuring the fire was kept supplied with plenty of logs. When Kylie went off duty we were served by Jon who was also very efficient and friendly. We were there all afternoon from 12pm to after 6pm and felt very relaxed and comfortable. Would highly recommend this pub as a great meeting place for lunch and or drinks. Will definitely be back, probably our next catch up in February.

Always pop into the lamb and flag for a pint while we wait for a Chinese takeaway from across the road, haven't tried the food but certainly looks appetising. Always a busy pub with a great atmosphere, it's a bit of a tradition to come here for a pint of strongbow.

After a lovely morning spent in the Elan Valley walking the Reservoirs, my wife and I thought we would try and find somewhere for a Sunday lunch in Rhayader Came across the Lamb and Flag as notice outside confirmed lunch was being servedWent in, lovely lady behind bar said that a table for two was available, it was in bar area but this was not a problem We ordered a couple of drinks and she said it would be about a 10 minute wait for the carvery After a short wait,we were shown the way to the restaurant area where carvery was being served Again a very pleasant lady serving the carveryI had the beef and my wife chose the turkeyPlenty of meat on plate, lots of choice of vegetables and great value for money, both meals were piping hot For dessert I chose the apple and cinnamon crumble with custard, my wife declined as she was too full from dinnerLovely atmosphere, young waitress very attentive We would certainly be calling in again when we are next in the areaHighly recommended this place

Not right sure to be honest. We lived in Rhayader now for 5 month, and we've been in twice, and twice they say booked up for meals.First time, yes,it was a classic car rally, but second time there was no one in.Surely, not every table is reserved until 2pm,when we arrived at 12 noon, but yes was booked up.Maybe a note to management that possibly they look after ' walk ins ' as well especially when 2pm is two hours away.!!!!!??Admitadely,we were offered lunch by a very uninterested lady, who didn't seem to care,so we left. The service is appalling. The staff ain't interested. It took me longer to get served than to drink my pint. The staff too busy on their phones.!!!?Get a grip.Customer service is paramount. You ain't got it.

The staff and owners are clearly making so much money that they couldn't give a toss - just look at the scathing reviews & can't even be bothered to reply to criticism - go on I dare you to be bothered! walked out as nobody could be bothered to serve anyway - went to triangle which was superb in every way

We booked on line & required parking for our motor bikes. We arrived at 3pm check in time. Eventually after a 10 min wait a young girl arrived at the bar. We were told no parking then asked us if we had a push bike. It was obvious to any one given we both had bike gear & crash helmets. Eventually we able to park in the shabby out side seating area. We were not shown to our room just handed a key. The room was pleasant enough basic & only 2 tv channels. The hotel has about 6 rooms above a very lively pub. The food wasnt great & service very poor. We ended up going over the road to The Crown pub their sister pub. The food & service terrible again. We arrived back at the hotel around 11pm only to be kept awake til 3am from the noise from the pub downstairs. The music stopped around 1am but was kept awake by young crowd outside the pub. When it quietens down you are left with the very busy traffic noise as it on a main rd. This is not the place for a quiet weekend. We checked out at 10am very tired & had a long drive a head. We didnt even have breakfast there & found a nice cafe on the way home.

I arrived at a hotel just around the corner on wed evening 5/7/19, the barman was quick to take my order but that’s where the good points stopped, the food took around 25 mins to arrive, even though they were dead, I think there were three people in, I ordered breaded mushrooms as a starter and meatballs as a main. After 25 mins my meatballs arrived and I was more than a little surprised!!! I informed the waitress that I had ordered a starter and she said yes I know it’s coming now, I said but that was a starter !!! She simply ignored me and put it down and left, the mushrooms were bland boring and dry, the meatballs were the same, I know it’s cheap food but it doesn’t have to taste so poor, I was their for two nights and I didn’t go back, your service sucks and that’s being polite. And it would be nice to be acknowledged when you make s comment.

My wife and I walked in on our first evening in Rhayader. Barman was looking at his phone and ignored us; 4 blokes sat around a table looking at their phones; solitary drinker sat at the bar, and guess what? Looking at a phone. We took a look at the (empty) dining room and decided to leave and try the Crown Inn which is directly opposite. Whilst enjoying a pleasant meal in the Crown, we could see two other couples do exactly the same as we had done. Up your game!!

Although the staff were very welcoming and the pub was traditional and in good order, I wouldn't go rush back. There was an ok choice of drinks but the constant in and out of youngsters on a Saturday night, with the door left ajar, on a December evening doesn't take long to make you want to go elsewhere. A couple of good TVs so could watch football or rugby. Decent enough but one for a night out with the boys.

For a bank holiday weekend, I was willing to put the bad service and rushed food down to being busy, but when there’s only 5 other tables looking equally impatient and muttering about their dishes, you wonder if there’s chaos in the kitchen.

I had a very good aubergine and courgette bake It was well cooked with a delicious cheese and tomato sauce. There was a good salad and very good garlic bread with it. Less than £10 too. Choice of pudding was very limited as they had run out of some dishes so I went to the Spar and bought a bar of chocolate. There was a good log fire in the rather unattractively decorated bar room. I would eat there again as the food is good.

We stayed here a few months back and found the place to be excellent again! Last time the breakfast service was poor due to a member of staff, this time the complete opposite ! The pub is amazing and has a nice atmosphere, the restaurant is lovely and the food excellent ! The staff are all really eager to please, the breakfast as I mentioned was excellent with great service ! Room 12 is a challenge for a 6’2 person but comfortable ! The bath should be replaced with a shower cubicle really but can’t fault the place overall and will always come back even if in room 12 :-)

We stayed here for bed and breakfast while enjoying walking in the National Park. Rooms are spacious and clean, if nt a little dated. Friendly service from staff and a fabulous breakfast. A nice chilled atmosphere to the hotel. All reasonably priced, and we look forward to returning again.
