The Smithfield Bell in Powys

Visited here for a treat. To say it was underwhelming is an understatement! We ordered Sausages and mash - tiny portions arrived, burnt sausages, watery gravy, undercooked onions and almost no flavour to the dish. This is bangers and mash for god's sake. It isn't cheap either, £27 for what was basically a snack. We won't eat here again.

Lovely pub, bar staff a bit grumpy not really friendly apart from the waitress, 25/1/25 they need to order decent meat for the steaks, had it medium to rare with a mixed grill, still chewy and you could tell it was a cheap cut of steak, the mixed grill is small, they used to do a mega mixed grill which was better for value, most of the meals that we have had there lately have shrunk in size, I had a sirloin steak and it was medium to rare, very gristly and chewy, so we would recommend them getting better cuts of meat, table was sticky and cutlery wasn’t clean, it’s ok for a cheap meal but I’ve had better in Newtown at the black boy/wetherspoons. The bar staff need to smile more!

Called in on my way back home for lunch and was delighted with the food and service I received and will definitely call in again when passing

Very spacious but not very busy

We booked and paid a deposit for a meal there on Boxing day! The service from the young man behind the bar was excellent, he was lovely couldnt fault him! The food was just average but the vegetables esp the cauliflower cheese, was not what you'd expect from a pub/restaurant normally pub grub is good and reviews for the food here were good! Very disapointing sorry, so wanted to love it, but we wished we had gone home when we arrived and saw no other customers were there In response to the owner : We were told that we were the only ones booked in for food! The chef was sat in the bar on a sofa on a laptop, and looked miffed that he had to get up and cook! There was no excuse for the way the food was prepared so no we wont be back! He didnt even look at us or say anything when we left, he was again sat in the bar on a laptop! I have never seen a chef behave like this at any place we have eaten! Terrible attitude!

Smart Marston's pub next to shopping park. Good pub fayre menu. Tasty steak and ale pie with chips peas and pot of gravy. Pie hot and cold in centre indicating microwave warmed. Marston's Pedigree not as good as we used to enjoy in Burton upon Trent, but similar to other chain pubs. Reasonable price £12 per meal.

I didn’t realise the food was gonna come out that quickly when you place it order on you know that on the website and the good thing they check how many people ordered and I guess they they know how many people are probably used to having people ordering separately, so the staff come and check so that’s a goofy One thing. It did surprise me how quick the food came out soon as you place your order came out second bro 5to 10 minutes later. The food was there on the table.

Always enjoy the pizzas here, particularly when their pizza chef Sue is working. Food is good value for money and I always enjoy a chat with Jade when I go in!

On holiday in the area for a second time this year. Found The Smithfield Bell, earlier in the year. It did not disappoint last time and again today, we have had lovely food and great friendly service from Michael. They are dog friendly and very welcoming to my fur baby, who suffers with dust allergies and she has not scratched once so she can vouch it is really clean in here too.

All the staff are amazing and super friendly! The bar tender Michael remembers my drink order off by heart now and is super happy to help always.

Great atmosphere and excellent customer service

Lovely family meal for 8 of us. Food was good made adaptions for autism needs. Nice to not wash up or cook. Blue light card accepted too .

Currently sat in Smithfield Bell, Welshpool. Do yourselves a favour, stay home! After removing the dirty serviettes off our seats we sat down at our sticky table eagerly awaiting our culinary delights. After 45 mins I got fed up of waiting so asked a waitress to find out where our food was, miraculously 5 mins later ta-dah our food landed. My wife ordered the Hunters Chicken ... which was described as 'smothered' in bbq sauce ..... ( I just hope if i'm smothered to death, it's done by the chef at the Smithfield ) what she received was a dry chicken breast & a bottle of Heinz Classic squeezy sauce. ( see photos for description & what we received) Food was dry, late and utterly disgusting. Anyway, time to peel my shirt sleeves off this sticky table and get the hell outta here! ...

Very good Sunday lunch, good value. An extra person taking orders would have resulted in 5 stars across the board.

Terrible experience, I booked a table online and on our arrival after waiting 10 minutes for someone to welcome us, I had to go to bar to ask where we could sit. ‘Anywhere’ was the answer. I ordered our food via the app at 1.55 at 2.30 I went to the bar to ask how long our food would be, baring in mind some people that had come in after us had had their food. The waitress told 5 minutes. At 2.45 I went to bar to say we wanted a refund as we couldn’t stay any longer. 4 other people were also asking for a refunds. One family because there was 6 in their party, of which 4 had had their food and the other 2 had been waiting 40 minutes for theirs. I asked the lady what was the problem, ‘we’re short staffed’ she screech at me. I mentioned that it would have been courteous to tell people there was an hour wait for food as they came in. She said that she was unaware there was a problem, which isn’t true as when she brought our tea and coffee over she was on the phone asking for staff to come in. Once she’d done the refund she turned the next couple, no apology, nothing, to which I then asked for a receipt, she said the till roll had ran out. Huffing and puffing she found a new one and printed me a receipt. Her attitude and customer service skills and the whole experience was absolutely shocking.

Been in tonight for the burger night tonight it was brilliant I believe it was made by David and all the other staff were amazing and helpful

Disgusting experience. Over an hour for food to come and then when it arrived it was inedible. Was going to complain but overheard someone else arguing with the manageress after making a similar complaint and he was getting nowhere due to her attitude And unwillingness to help. Left food cut out losses and won’t be returning. Avoid at all costs

Waited an hour plus food came out cold ordered a steak medium came out well done which we didn’t order well done so didn’t get what we expected the waitresses was good he was nice and understanding but the complaint

We had a beautiful meat lovers pizza made by the lovely Sue! We will definitely be back for a pizza night in the near future!

Feel really at ease, the service was really good and obliging nothing too much effort. The food was lovely will definitely come again

We came in for lunch on Wednesday and were welcomed into the pub with friendly staff, our food and drinks were excellent. Service was great and we would highly recommend that you take a visit.

First time visiting. We all had Sunday lunch Turkey and beef, the food came out hot, the meat was cooked lovely! Staff friendly couldn't do enough for you. Highly recommend

Firstly I would like to thank all the staff at the smithfield Bell for reuniting me with my lost wallet containing cash and cards,such a relief. All staff are friendly and helpful always. Food and drink ,as well as the price, always good. Once again a big thank you to everyone for your service and honesty. Keep it up guys.

Pleasant place to stop and have a meal, the lunch menu is ideal, smaller portions, 2 courses, ice-cream was yummy Thank you. Clean toilets too we always stop here when traveling to this area, always been pleased with food and service.

Currently in Smith field bell Out food was overcooked. We asked politely if we could have our steaks done properly. They have refused and won't give us a refund after waiting over an hour. Very disappointed

Booked a table online the day before,We completed all contact details.We were staying approx 30 mins out of Welshpool, when we got there we were told that due to unforeseen circumstances they were closing the kitchen early and would not be able to accommodate our booking, we replied with why has no one contacted us so we could of made other arrangements.The poor worker did not know what to say, The Manager could not even bother to come out and speak to us and did all his talking through the young worker. We would not recommend this place,It’s poorly run and poorly managed.

We came in for 5pm and the place wasn't very busy , ordered our food and drinks and proceeded to sit and wait until I realised that the girl who served us had forgotten my drink. When our food came out it was hot and a decent portion too but I felt sorry for the young lad who was bringing out the food as he was flying about. At least we had a better experience than the last time we visited but that might be due to a change of management.

Lovely experience me and my family had was served by two very nice young men and the the lovely lady who served our food and wore a skirt was so kind and sweet I’ve never had such nice service before the food was very well made as well I wasn’t expecting such nice food for a marstons however it was delicious

Orders Mixed Grill and Sunday roast. Mixed Grill all meat was like rubber . Steak was cooked well well done not medium rare. Egg well it was like a crispy fried egg hard and solid !. Sunday roast no stuffing !!! Yourskhire pudding rock hard . Turkey very watery !. Very disappointed to say the least. Presentation and training in kitchen is needed . No staff member came to see if we were OK.

Ordered a mixed Grill and Sunday roast.. Mixed Grill - Egg was so hard and crispy with fat and rock jars , Steak was Well done not medium cooked as asked for . Yorkshire pudding rock hard. No tast at all. Very disappointed Manager did refund us and said she talk to the kitchen but honest to god they need to know how to cook .

I would like to know if anyone has actually eaten at this place , because every time I’ve made the effort to go , we’ve been given some poor excuse to not get served , yesterday the kitchen staff were all on break at half 2 on a Saturday , the time before you didn’t have cheese for your pizza on pizza night … god knows what the other reasons were, wouldn’t recommend to any hungry people to be honest unless you like a gamble ?

Fairly typical Marston's pub. Decent food. Good prices and accept Blue Light card.

Arrived here a little after 8pm to find the pub literally empty and told by an extremely abrupt female staff member that the kitchen was closed for the day, totally disgusted as we know Marston pub serve food till 9pm we left and hit a chip shop instead. Won't wast our time going back again, as not every one wants to have dinner earlier plus we had just driven from Stourbridge to visit family in Welshpool. A very poor pub sadly.

We Came here for dinner,was lovely being Greeted at the door. I had the steak and ale pie was okay but was alot of pepper on the top of it,my husband enjoyed his mixed grill. One member of staff wasn't dressed very Appropriately had a belly top on could see her belly bar had a Skirt way to far up,she had very long hair it should of been put back as she was running food.

Met up with friends, and we had very enjoyable meals, staff also attentive regular asking all OK 👍 will be going again.

Only one beer on (Pedigree) so I won't be rushing back

my daughter and I went one lunchtime and I could not fault the chap that served us. He was polite and eager to make sure we had a good visit. We both had the steak. The steak was cooked well and although rare.was not.tough to cut into. We enjoyed our visit and would come back again. My only disappointment was that the spicy burger was no longer on the gluten free menu.

Stopped off on way back to the midlands. Pleasant atmosphere, nice meal and pleasant service from Jade.

Booked a table, walked in and it was very dark and quiet. Two girls behind bar just stared at us whilst we waited to be seated. We went over to them after a little while of awkwardness. Told us to seat ourselves which was fair enough because it was very quiet. Waited for about 10 minutes before we realized we had to get up and get the menu (which was hidden) ourselves and order online.. would've been handy to know what to do as we expected someone to have explained that to us. Food was nice and quick, drinks were watered down with lots of ice. No one came to check if everything was okay. Just a lack of basic customer service skills. Quite disappointing. The one young girl seemed very moody and didn't smile once. Weird atmosphere.. don't think id recommend. we felt uncomfortable. But that might just be us.

2 time coming and everything was perfect

Nice enough place, OK, pub decor, very nice staff. The food has changed over the time we have been going, smaller portions, and reduced menu. But still good, PS, be careful, a large glass of vino will set you back £8 ! And yes you can get a decent wine for £8 a bottle in tesco.

Family meal out we all enjoyed the food and had great service from the staff. Mix grill was fantastic

We really enjoyed our visit, the food was hot and well cooked. The staff were welcoming and very pleasant. There was only one disappointment and that was the fish had run out and my husband had to have the gammon instead. All in all we really enjoyed our visit.

Service spot on and lovely workers behind the bar, always have a smile on their faces :)

We ordered 4 steaks which were cooked to perfection, it was also nice to have a choice other than chips with them. Staff very friendly and checked everything was OK throughout the our meal. Good value for money too.

Fabulous service great food. And lovely atmosphere. And jade served us. She was friendly polite and able to have a laugh. Which is a rare thing.

Really nice lunch while passing through Welshpool, an extra bonus for me is they have neck oil on tap!! I recommend the ultimate chicken burger. Jade who was serving behind the bar was great.

The pub itself is lovely and the staff helpful and friendly. However the food wasn't too good. The lasagne had hardly any flavour and the hunters chicken was dry and didn't seem to be put together too well.

As a group we normally use smithfield bells twice a year. Most of the time food is fine, basic and good place for a group to gather. This time however it was different. Quite a few of us ordered fish and chips, over cooked fish or rather re cooked fish was terrible. We tried to bring to the attention of lady who seemed to be managing the place, she just said well that was cooked. We went to get some beers, they were not cold from the tap agin she said its fine no one said anything. So sorry smithfield bells, after many years of bringing many groups we don’t feel like returning

Decided to give this place another go but nothing has changed beer not got maney run out kitchen was just shutin when we came out about 645 had food was OK but choice of what we wanted was not available so will go back

Decent workaday pub meal with friendly staff. I had the mixed grill which was a reasonable £15 or so. I asked for it to be cooked “medium” and it all came “well done” though. Plenty of room inside and out, although outside seating didn’t have any shades. Also had a good quality play area for kids.

Couldn’t fault it. The young lady who greeted us on arrival was very professional and kind. Food was ordered without any problems and arrived quickly. It was very well presented and hot and very tasty. Reasonably priced aswell. Will definitely visit again, sooner next time. Thanks for a great dining experience 😀

Food was lovely. Waitress at our table had zero people skills Dumped our food without speaking Collected our plates, didn’t even ask if we enjoyed ,have we finished just marched up to the table and whisked the plates from under us Off putting to say the least. We like a friendly face. There isn’t one here anymore now the other lovely welcoming waitress seems to have left

We went here for a Sunday roast and was very disappointed- I don’t think we’ve ever not been able to finish a meal before but it really wasn’t good. Firstly the starter we had to send back as the chicken was stone cold, then with the main the meat on my partner’s was so dry, the Yorkshire pudding was rock solid and the roast potatoes hard too. For the cost which come to about £45 it was definitely not worth it. The service was very fast and efficient which improved the overall experience. We went here for a meal the evening before (as we stayed in Welshpool for a weekend away) and the food was a lot better.

Menu deals were not explained properly to the customer in front of us. This led to the staff member and the customer having a bit of difficult conversation. This was a bit of a downer. The food took while to arrive, longer than I would have expected.

We went at lunchtime and chose from the £5 lunch menu,I had scampi and chips and my partner had fish and chips,nice and like a mini meal so good as a small dish... Decor nice inside,staff helpful and as quick as they could be...

Went there the first time yesterday lunch time, was recommend by family. Nice and clean lovely staff really helpful and pleasent. Returned later on and had a meal which was excellent. Returned again this evening and had a different meal, very nice. A family member asked if they could have mash instead of chips. No problem at all.. Excellent service. Highly recommended.

Nahco starter was a big portion to share which was great. Steak was cooked to perfection and the fish and chips were delicious. Highly recommed a visit. The staff were welcoming and lovely.

The restaurant was very unprofessional with the waitresses standing around talking to their friends and not interacting with anyone else. The wait for food was 45 minutes with only a small order with half the food hot and half cold. When the food came it was also incorrect with the wrong dressing on one plate and the children’s meals incorrect. When questioned on the wait there was no apology made by the staff at all, a definite avoid.

I’m glad I have a chance to congratulate your staff, in particular I presume the manager. A warm friendly welcome. Showed us to our table which I had booked in advance. I am disabled so I like to have room around me, also to be able to see my Granddaughter play in the outside play area. On our last visit 6 months ago, the service was poor, the food was terrible. Because the pub is so handy for me personally we tried it again. I am so pleased we did. The food was GREAT, I had scampi, garden peas and chips. My Granddaughter had cheese and ham pizza ( child’s menu) . The manager brought our drinks over as I’m on crutches. THANK YOU we loved being back to a favourite pub and we shall visit again shortly. Please keep the standards up so that I can recommend. 5 ***** .

Probably wise to call in advance to check food is actually being served as we arrived at 7:55 pm on Tuesday March 5th to be told they were only serving drinks.

I was disappointed this time. The food was not nearly as good as previous times. It wasn't busy at all but waited 40 minutes for our food. 2 of us had roast beef which was tough. My mashed potatoes were lumpy and it was all lukewarm. Like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for ages. I don't know what's happened but it's not good! I'll try somewhere else next time.

Clean and welcoming, food was really nice everyone in our party and there was 9 of us enjoyed there food. Will definitely be coming back soon

Dreadful. No butter on jacket potatoes, tuna mayo is just tuna with a bottle of mayo to add your own, veg chilli and cheese hardly any veg chilli the cheese was mozzarella a tasteless cheese that is not suitable for a baked potato. One of the waiters had cut his hand and was serving with blood running down his hand, the tea was not nice, and the kid’s blackcurrant cordial was really weak and served in adult glasses. To add some balance the pizza was ok but all in all it was very poor and we won’t be back again.

called in today Sunday for a drink and coffee looks at menu but beer pumps only one beer pub was dark no smell of food no atmosphere. remember when first open great place allways busy food choices compared to now pub is dead shame marstons Don't care should sell it of love to see a harvester or weather spoons. beef eater . but welshpool allways behind other towns thank you for reply but when I go to other towns real ale is still popular also stop at other marstons inns plenty of beers . pity they didn't build a hotel here but that's not your fault best of luck
