Lovely staff; cannot fault any of them at all. I hope they are all decently paid because they thoroughly deserve it. The food was really very good, beautifully cooked and nice-sized portions. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Our friends stayed at the hotel and were happy enough with it.

A last minute decision on a Sunday afternoon to have a family afternoon tea. No problem booking in and no problem that some of us are vegetarian. A shame we were the only ones there as it would have been nice to have other people around us enjoying themselves. It was like a ghost town. Perhaps we could have been seated in a ‘cosier’ part of the extensive resort. The food was fine, although perhaps not quite up to the levels I’d had there a few years ago, and the choices of teas weren’t the same - very basic Twinings options, as opposed to the delicious loose leaf choices from before. Service was very good. The price is fair for what you get, so all in all it’s worth 4 out of 5.

The "posh" restaurant in the Stoke by Naylands Resort is supposed (and priced) to be "fine dining". However, the chicken dish served this evening was more "bas cuisine" than "haute". You really shouldn't have to fight with a chicken breast or cut away inedible dry bits in order to eat it. But that's what occurred. Notable that there was not a hint of apology when this was mentioned to the serving staff. Unsatisfactory on several counts. Made for a disappointing evening despite the lovely company...

My partner and I dined here during our final nights stay at the Stoke and Nayland hotel (which is fabulous!) We opted to go for a 2 course meal (£24 each) and we had some water for the table, slightly concerning that the bottle of water is £3.80 mind. Nevertheless, the service we had from Hugo tonight made up for the slight mishaps on price. Before we started we opted to have two gin and tonics, moderately priced. My partner had the Hendricks option and I went for the ginger spiced themed gin and tonic. For our main meal my partner opted for the chicken wrapped in bacon whilst I went for the confit of duck. Both dishes arrived promptly and were presented as well as they tasted - delicious. We opted to go for a dessert each and we both went for the Banoffi themed waffle, which was the right size of portion to end the evening off. We’d like to thank Hugo for his professional manner of service tonight and Gianluca too, for his wonderful service. Both men clearly enjoy what they do and this made our dining experience that much better!

Unfortunately the website says, “Fine dining has never tasted so good in our Lakes Restaurant” Wrong it did 6 months ago, now it’s not even worthy as a pub experience. Not fine dining, not a la carte or fresh I would not recommend or go back. Service is great but food is terrible. Award winning it was,not anymore. A lot better places in the area. 0 out of 10 for food

Usually my wife is the one who fills up the comment cards, feedback forms and writes few words on tripadvisor of the place. Usually we are a very happy, cheerful and satisfied customer most of the times. But after this dinner at the Lakes Restaurant I had a feeling I have to write a review by myself. As I am an Italian person I love food (to eat and also to cook) enjoying wine, sweets and coffee too... So I have to say if someone is really passionate about to have a good dinner this place is not the right choice. Bar is lovely, bit outdated but does the job. We discovered on arrival the bar person was already half drunk speaking and laughing even more loud than the guests! And there was a young guy in blue vest, white shirt was kind of annoying too who could not stop saying to every single person around him he is very busy "has to look after a big function" but till we left the bar after our aperitif he was still hanging around and chatting to his co-workers. Not a problem at all, I thought someone else will looking after his guests... Lakes restaurant looks nice, good atmosphere but the problems are just started here... Sat down, got menus in hand bread arrives in few minutes, before we even opened the menu and had a look... Nice quick service, bread sliced, slightly warm, looks fresh and tasty! Lets choose some wines, then order some food. Wine arrives by a very professional waiter, Hugo. he looks smart, friendly, helpful and knows how to serve wine in a professional way. Well done! After this we had a look on the menu and realised the choices on the menu are very poor not seasonal and overpriced but as we are already here lets eat something! Starter takes ages to come, really disappointing, tasteless food, wilted salad and supermarket part baked baguettes croutons, and just doesn`t look appetising. Finger prints on the plates everywhere. Main course coming after a long wait too looks like a pub-grub, lukewarm, lots of gravy (I guess made from gravy cubes) very far from 2 rosette standard, very amateur presentation. But at least plate warmer was working as my wife`s plate was extremely hot, but not the dish, eh! Very disappointing food £14 apparently home made burger, must be kidding, please tell me which part of the dish was home made. I had the same somewhere else in a simple pub just few days ago when I went for a quick meeting with my colleagues and had a meal with just for £7 included a pint. We got offered to see the dessert menu but I was really sceptical to see the choices as I thought they must be the same quality as the previous courses or even just simply bought in from a local bakery so we said no to the waiter. Luckily he was trying to convince us to try some so as we were still pretty hungry so we accepted the challenge. I have to say that was the best choice of the night as they were so delicious and they looked amazing Vanilla brulee and Boxford farm cheesecake. The dinner was really disappointing, never thought food can be this bad at Stoke by Nayland, don`t think we would like to come back ever again or might be just for some wine and some sweet treats or might be just for the spa treatments. Food experience 0/5 but giving 5/5 for desserts so that makes 2/5 in overall Service 1/5 for the funny welcome at the bar plus the food runner had no idea what is going on but 5/5 for Hugo the Spanish waiter so that is 3/5 in total. Price 2/5 as the quality is not matching with the price. We still left some tip and did not complain on the night to anyone as they were major problems not just a little mistake which can be solved right away with a free coffee or a 10 % off the bill. We don`t want to receive any free meal or our money back after this review and if management are still happy with everything just please ignore my opinion.

I booked a table for 3 people for a Sunday lunch and requested a window table. The booking was for 12:30pm. We arrived and were shown to a window table, however the way in which it was set, only 2 of us could benefit from the view. Although we had booked for 12:30pm it was very clear that the restaurant was not ready. We were advised the menus were still being printed. The carvery was not set up until almost 1:00pm. Drinks arrived promptly but the bread did not arrive until we were leaving the table to get our carvery. The food was tasty but not very hot! Also the vegetable containers all had their lids left on which made serving difficult and several people did not realise that there were different vegetables at the back of the dishes. Pudding was slow in arrival. My partner and I requested coffee which took over 15 minutes to arrive and when it did there were stains down the outside of both cups. The waiter excuse was that someone had “bumped into him”. I sent mine back for a fresh cup but my partner put up with his although when I pointed out that if the coffee had been spilt there would be slops in the saucer it was to be noted that the stains on the outside of the cups were dry, which does not indicate a recent spillage. This is not our first visit to this restaurant and each time standards leave room for improvement.

Chosen because a last minute decision to go out for Lunch . Lots of popular good places locally but all probably unavailable at 12.30. The i remembered Stoke by Nayland Golf and country club was on my radar. Good reviews and personal recommendations, plus it was a large place so probably had space and they even did on the day availability booking on line. Decision made. A friendly greeting and shown to our seats immediately , it may have been raining but the view was lovely over the greens and in summer eating on the verandah must be a great treat. 2 Courses £19.95 . 3 Courses £23.95. Both of us opted for the Courgette soup as it was that sort of day and the home made bread. Lovely smiling waiting staff taking the opportunity to chat a while but never intrusive, quickly brought the starters and drinks . Both of us opted for the traditional Beef from the carver. No rough old leather this but thick slices of best quality Sirloin carved by the chef and then helped ourselves to Y.P , good roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese , Mashed swede, red cabbage , carrots and sugar snap peas. Hot gravy and horseradish finished the meal off. A lovely plate of food and comparable to the food at another favoured local inn. The main difference is the price , there the main alone costs £18.30 for a roast with less vegetables. Yes it arrives looking less of a car crash than mine did when i had finished loading it onto my plate but I could have as many of my favourite vegetables as I liked and no need to ask for more gravy. I like my gravy and find that chefs can be a bit parsimonious with their gravy which is fine as I know some people do not like it over everything but I love it when you get a gravy boat of plentiful grey to help yourself or like this ,a never ending supply of hot gravy. Plus the YP was by far better. Sadly no room for dessert but 2 large decent glasses of wine and a large bottle of water for under £26 a head . Yes we will be back ,Masses of car parking and a bar right outside where you can sit and wait of retire to after the meal .I have just discovered they do a breakfast buffet too for £13.99 a head , certainly one to do for the family Christmas breakfast outing.

We couldn’t see the Menu until the night so we had no idea of whether there would be anything on it we wanted/fancied or liked. When we saw it we were not impressed. I had a lovely salad from the bar menu. Husband code a starter, chicken liver pate, and cheese and biscuits as nothing else appealed. The chicken liver pate was tasteless - he said Lidl’s was better! He waited 40 minutes from asking for the cheese and biscuits and walked out. Yes they were busy but... in our jobs had been to lots of hotels and hotel restaurants so not “nit picking”. The rest of the stay, hotel, spa and especially the bar and reception staff were all great. We will go again to the hotel but will try a local pub or eat in the bar. We really had looked forward to a special meal so yes - very disappointing.

Technically it was not the Lakes restaurant but a function room where we ate lunch before enjoying a fashion show . However the same kitchen prepared the food for over 100 ladies. The tables were set beautifully, tap water already chilled and on the table and I was very impressed with the efficient service . The food was excellent and a choice between chicken wrapped in ham or a Goats cheese and pepper mille feuille. Both with a very seasonal selection of vegetables and good sauce. Dessert was advertised as Strawberries and cream but it was so much more . A restaurant style selection of small strawberry desserts. My party of 8 were delighted with their lunch and went on to enjoy the fashion show. A great afternoon .

We were a party of six friends - we are not golfers and this restaurant is part of a Golf Complex. Sat down at a lovely table and got settled in, however within half an hour a large group of golfers arrived taking up two large tables in the area we had been placed. The noise was overpowering to the point of pain!! We could not hear even if we shouted, which was not what we wanted. When we pointed this out to the staff, they were incredibly helpful and moved us to a much quieter area, apologising continually throughout the meal - ensuring we were happy: I would suggest that they pull the sliding doors across when they have such a golfing group or business meeting to cut the noise outFood was excellent - even the different types of bread prior to serving the mealDefinitely would recommend

For this kind of food lol! Good looking restaurant. Weird they made us wait 10 minutes to "make up" table but it was one we saw that was already done? Odd. Sat down and got brought a bread basket. I didnt get the bread choices, white chocolate blue cheese? Or cranberry and orange? Too fancy for me. Then we had 2 powercuts so ate the bread in the dark lol.Took awhile for mains to arrive due yo powercut but they were apologetic. Was all very fancy so me and my fiancé had steak. The steak was huge and cooked perfectly! Came with lovely truffle fries and a friend mushroom! Was a huge plate of food and worth the £20. £3 for peppercorn sauce wasnt worth it though. Other members had some pork and shrimp thing but it was so small, it looked like a starter lol not great for the money. So that meant another bread basket and cheese and biscuits for them! Service was very slow even though the room was only a quarter full. They brought over a small plate of biscuits and the cheese came out 25 minutes later! Was a joke. Had a good meal but probably wouldnt return for dinner, might try afternoon tea sometime.

For starters we has smoked salmon with mint which was really lovely, the steak for main was awesome and was honestly the best I've ever had. The desserts sounded rather funky and we had bacon or dessert... Yes, BACON. I don't know how we had Bacon on a Doughnut but we did and it was delicious, I'd recommend it to anyone!

I am sorry to say that the Christmas lunch was a great disappointment to us. We were a family of 8 and expected a delicious meal with all the trimmings, but the turkey was dry and tasteless. The brussels sprouts were hardly cooked at all so that we couldn't even cut one with a knife! So we had to leave them .....the roast potatos were dry and uninteresting. The only good things were the parsnips which were very nice. There was no cranberry jelly offered. That should be a standard accompaniment to the turkey as everyone knows! What is going on in your kitchen? The Christmas pudding was also tasteless! Very bad meal altogether.Surely for the price there should have been an aperitiv offered? Extraordinary that there isn't an overall manager checking on these things!Margot K.

We visited for Sunday lunch as we are scoping the area for potential hotels for our wedding guests next year.First let me just say that the food was pretty good for the price. A reasonable £15 for 2 courses and the roast beef was tasty and plentiful. However, we endured some pretty remarkable service. When we arrived there were only 5 other tables seated but the staff, one lady in particular, were already quite manic and flustered. To save writing a long rambling paragraph I'll bullet point the main issues:- One of our party had food spilled down her back whilst they were cleaning an adjacent table.- No wine list was provided and the first time we had a member of staff come to the table (after about 10 mins) was to take our wine order.- After ordering a 2nd bottle of the same wine, the lady brought the wine and proceeded to refill all the glasses, mixing the wine in 1 glass. It then became apparent that the wine was not the same as the one previously ordered. When we pointed this out we were told that they were actually the same wine. One was a Shiraz. One was a Pinotage.- When the bill came no discount or concession had been applied for any of the above and several drinks were on the bill that we did not order. The bill was taken away and returned, still with no discount, and still with more drinks that we had. Third time lucky and it came back as it should with a 10% discount that the restaurant manager himself described as 'small'.- For the duration of the meal, the next table which had been vacated had a large amount of food on the floor by a child seat that was not cleaned up.All 1st world problems I know but not even close to the service or standards you would expect from a 2 AA Rosette restaurant.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights in November & decided to eat in The Lakes restaurant the first evening, enjoyed it so much that we ate there on our second evening too. Waiter Juan was most informative both on the food & the wine & helped us make some interesting choices. The food was quite elaborate,( possibly a slightly less rich alternative would have been desirable), but excellent - starting with the delicious artisan breads right through to delightful desserts. (There was a slight error with my dessert on the first night which was quickly made amends for). There were several diners the first night which gave it a nice atmosphere but we were almost alone on the second night (there was a large function in one of the suites) & we still enjoyed the feel of the place.

Disappointed when it arrived as the bread felt a little stale as though the packet had been open a day or two. Their baps are certainly not freshly baked onsite. Horrified when my friend took a bite to find the underside had a patch of mould on it. To the hotel's credit, they replaced the dish and gave us a full refund without a quibble, but really?? Sloppy quality control!

Oct 2014, 6 of us stayed in one of the lodges on the golf course, and dined here on the Saturday evening.Food and service were spot on, and the prices were very reasonable. All in all we had a great night. And the free trip in the minibuses back to the lodge after. Absolutely no complaints.

Having enjoyed a lovely meal here earlier in the year with my mum, I returned with my husband.Despite it being incredibly busy with various functions in the hotel and a full restaurant, I can honestly say everything was incredible.Yes, we did have to wait a long time to order, but the staff were very pleasant despite being rushed off their feet and did all they could to ensure we were accommodated.Food was amazing. My waffle with whipped lardo, bacon, blueberries and salted chocolate oil had wave after wave of taste sensations and my hubby's cod cheeks with an Asian influence were fab too. We both drooled over our main courses, mine of crisp lamb breast with sticky jus, spiced carrot purée, chickpea purée, crushed pistachios and pickled rhubarb jam and my husbands of smoked pork collar with succulent pulled pork and a melange of beans with cheese and sausage, and gorgeous homemade ketchup. Then for pud there was an interesting doughnut and a zingy dish of coconut cream, lemongrass curd and sharp lime gel.All presented to a very high standard. You have to try this place!

My review is not the normal restraint review because we attended a reunion at Stoke by Nayland Golf where it was a set Two course menu and they were serving 250 people all at one sitting. We have been to many of these reunions in the past and usually they are not memorable. However, this was by far the best we have attended. The food was first class and everyone, on our table of ten, couldn't fault the food quality or the high standard of service staff.

First course was very tasty spicy soup, second course the duck dish was excellent, the steak not so good a little on the tough side. Third course was excellent, one was too sweet but this was changed for another dish and not charged for which was;very much appreciated . The wine which was recommended was excellent. We shall certainly recommend to our friends.

You don't usually expect to get outstanding food in a 'leisure resort' restaurant but this one proved to be very good. The restaurant looked much the same as any other large hotel restaurant and perhaps lacked the ambience to put it in the 'excellent' category but both the A la carte and the Menu of the Day were varied and, based on what we ordered, first class. The Day's Menu apparently changes each day and the Waiting staff gave good advice and were willing and able to discuss the ingredients and emphasise the choices that best reflected local and in season produce. The wine list was not over ambitious and prices reasonable. For a three course meal with wine we paid only a little over £60 for two, before service, which we felt represented very good value for money. This is part of a family run hotel, albeit a large one, and there was throughout a sense of 'really caring' that would not be found in most of the big chains.

good service, but the atmosphere in the room is weird and you can't see a thing out of the window because it's pitch black out there, it's like sitting in front of a mirrow (shudder!). The food was tasty but too complicated. Not big enough portions - for eg, we had duck breasts and mash. The mash was creamed about only about a tablespoonfull, smeared across the plate with the duck atop. It looks nice, but wasn't enough to fill you up. It was served with beans, but again, these were just slivers of beans - looked pretty, but nothing to eat!We would eat there again if we are staying in the hotel, but I would not consider it a destination restaurant. Breakfast, on the other hand, was great!

Our group of 10 ate here on our last night in the lodges,The food was amazing. I had pork cheek for starter ( one of my favourite cuts of meat, and if found in a restaurant normally a sign of a great chef), the roast beef for main course (best roast ever probably) and bread and butter pudding with blue cheese ice cream for dessert ( yummmmmmmmmmm). Our waiters were very friendly and we had some good banter with them. The wine was great. We will definitely return next year!

We visit Stoke-by-Nayland restaurant a fair bit. It's middle of the range pricewise, so not the cheapest, but the food is usually original and good The venue is very pleasant with views over the scenic golf course, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Therefore, we thought it would be very nice to go there for Christmas dinner. We discussed the menu beforehand as I'm coeliac, and we were assured that any of the dishes on offer could be adapted for me. However, when we went to order, it seemed that items would have to be left off the plate if I ordered certain dishes. This is always quite disappointing as there are various alternatives, especially if ordered beforehand. There was gluten free bread, but I know that there is better quality bread out there. Some restaurants serve fantastic rolls etc, but I'm afraid this looked a bit like Tesco's seeded sliced bread. Forgive me if I'm wrong, and I wouldn't usually mention it, but we were paying £75.00 each. The salmon starter seemed a bit dry, and the main course, was distinctly uninteresting. I couldn't have the pigs in blankets or the stuffing. (There are gluten free options out there for both.) There wasn't enough gravy, and the vegetables were so uninteresting - plain carrots and sprouts. Sorry, but it had the appearance of something you would order in a very cheap place. I had some thing instead of stuffing, I think it was a gluten free Yorkshire pudding. It was so leathery it was hard to tell. For sweet I ordered a meringue concoction, but again, since I couldn't have cream it was very dry and uninteresting. It was a bit of a let down. This was an expensive meal, and the establishment had plenty of time to consider providing a few alternatives like soya cream substitute and gluten free stuffing. I wouldn't normally expect it, but for this money and with prior warning it would have been possible. It just didn't seem good enough and I was very disappointed.

I have eaten at this restaurant twice in as many weeks. The food at the restaurant is lovely with a chef who is clearly passionate about the food he cooks for his customers. During a two visits between us we have tried an number of different dishes including monkfish, steak, and pork, all of which have been cooked to perfection. The food at the restaurant is well worth its 2 AA rosette's. The first time we visited the restaurant was mid week and the it was empty. It seems that during the week the restaurant relies on the hotel customers for its business, which is a shame as the food deserves better than this. It is a bit of drive out from Ipswich and Colchester but well worth the effort. I don't know Colchester very well, but struggle to think of anywhere in Ipswich where the food is as good as that served here. Furthermore the view from the restaurant is amazing.Well worth the effort to get there.

From the restaurant manager through to the waiting staff everybody was excellent and very knowledgeable about the food on offer. The twice cooked lamb was amazing as was the bream and the monkfish orders. The desserts were stunning and was a shame to eat them as they looked so nice on the plates. We will definitely return.

We were fortunate to have a meal here on a golf break in May 2013 and were very pleasantly surprised when instead of the normal Sunday roast, we were offered a fine dining experience which surpassed our wildest expectations. The quality and presentation of the various dishes were superb and the waiting staff (especially Joao - lovely chap) was excellent! We will return just as soon as we can...

Nice pub but slow service and typical of a place run by friends and family who seemed to overrun the bar area.

We celebrated my sisters 50th birthday here ! We had the private function room upstairs which has recently been refurbished and it was lovely. We were allowed in early to decorate with banners and balloons. Baring in mind we were a large group and all opted for three courses the food was still all served together so we had no one waiting, the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We couldn't fault it all :) A few of the family stayed and were extremely happy with rooms and the yummy breakfast :)
