We arrived and were seated from the waitress shouting at the other end of the room to take a seat where we like. It wasn't the busiest place but she looked very flustered. Eventually got a menu and were told that there would be a 45 minute wait for food. We said we would have a drink and think about it. We felt we were an inconvenience and being told about the wait, felt we were being put off. The waitress never returned to take our order so we left.

I have been a few times to the Olive Tree, sitting inside and out. Both lovely areas. Every time I have visited, the staff have always been friendly, polite and helpful. The food and drinks are delicious. They have the best coffee! Everything is homemade and freshly cooked to order so there can be a wait when they are busy but it's well worth it. For a large group of us, I always book a table as they can get full up quickly.

Good variety of choices, delicious, tasty dishes. Service was a little on the slow side but the quality of the food made up for it. We were shocked to hear other diners complaining vociferously to the young staff about the length of time their meals had taken. In these exceptionally trying times for the hospitality industry, a little understanding from patrons goes a long way. Staff are up against it, are under huge pressure and are trying their best. Be kind, be empathetic and leave a tip!

A walk around Long Melford, a pleasant-looking tea room... We were in luck! Once inside, we had to be proactive in getting a menu and then ordering. The food and drink took an age to arrive; both were good. The service really was awful. There were two young women/teeagers trying to cope with the serving and the washing up between them. Someone else was helping with the food preparation. I paid with cash. There wasn't enough change in the till. One of the waitresses asked her manager for some change. The response was a shock: the woman unscrewed the 'Tips' jar and threw the money onto the counter with 'Take it out of there!' snarl at the girl. As we waited outside the shop for a moment, others came out with their own moans and groans. Will we return? Never!

From the outside the Olive Tree Tea Rooms looked very inviting. Sat at our table & read "local sourced produce" on the menu. My husband loves a sausage sandwich with butchers sausages you'd like to think from the Butchers up the road, but didn't taste that way, tasted like Walls sausages. Sandwiches arrived, I buy this bread from Tesco, thought the bread might have come from the Bakers up the road from the Tea Room. My sandwich filling was ok nothing exciting & definitely not over filled. Such a shame as The Olive Tree has the potential to be a lovely little tea room.

A warm welcome, good food and excellent quality earmark this cafe, which has a style all of its own in the shabby-chic genre. We had looked in at some of the other eateries in the village on a cold wet weekday lunchtime, and felt obliged to look further. 'Nuff said! The Olive Tree's owner and single helper were very busy as there was a group of Ladies That Lunch, and loads of other patrons - every table was occupied. Luckily one came free immediately and we sat down to enjoy an excellent Rustic Rarebit with loads of salad and pickle garnish, and a bacon and brie salad for my husband which they kindly adapted to suit his no-carb diet. Sizeable portions, good value and such a pleasant and attractive atmosphere. Best in town!!!

From outside looks quaint, inside well laid out and decorated. Seems to be a family owned/run business. It was quite popular but not full. The two staff were both busy in the kitchen, or waiting, and so occasionally patrons were waiting to pay or have orders taken.Menu was fairly straightforward, and what we had was quite good. The let down were the ‘outside’ toilets which are very basic and could be cold in bad weather. These really need a major refurbishment.

I have been visiting The Olive Tree in Long Melford for about 2 years now and I absolutely love it. We make a special trip from Colchester because we hold this place in such high regard when we fancy a family lunch out. The staff are exceptionally friendly and efficient and I’ve never once had a problem with service. The restaurant is clean and beautifully decorated. My youngest child loves the fairy lights. My favourite dish to order is the soup, no matter what flavour soup it is, it is always delicious, we’ve even tried to make soup as good at home but it’s never quite as good! My 7 year old son loves their soup too and is always trying to steal mine. I have ordered other things from the menu in the past such as the polughmams and chilli con carne and these have also been very tasty. I would highly recommend The Olive Tree to anybody visiting Long Melford.

Conclusions;A lovely little cafe, serving some cracking food. The afternoon tea was definitely good value for money. Cons.Nothing really. No afternoon teas after 14.15hrIf we were pushed . . . .the loos are not the greatest.Pros.Now the good bit.Prebooked afternoon tea for two, for 14.00hrWe turned up 10 minutes early, but were met with good cheer and shown to our table.Chose our sandwiches (brie and cranbury & ham and mustard, both on granery bread)Tea turned up promptly, closely followed by our full afternoon tea (see photo)Presentation was not formal, but was original. There was also plenty of it! The sandwiches were 1st class, really tasty and came with a small but adequate and delicious salad. The scones two each, were, again, really flavoursome with butter, enough jam and plenty of clotted cream. We were worried that we would not be able to do justice to the cakes, so, only had one scone each, putting the others to one side.Unfortunately, the volume of cakes did for us. We had three pieces, but that left nine . . . . . . . . yes, nine.No worries, the lovely, bubbly waitress bagged them for us.All in all, a very tasty tea, made better by staff who clearly enjoyed their jobs and made sure that we were happy with our visit. We will be back.

The olive tree is a wonderful cafe that does the most amazing hot chocolates and good food. The young waitress was lovely. (We left a £3 tip for our “£9.99” snack). We were overcharged by another rude lady who seemed to be running the cafe. Stopped here for breakfast on the way back from a weekend away further up in Suffolk. The Olive Tree is unimposing, but bigger than it looks, consisting of a modest tearoom and outside seating. We had breakfast, which was delicious (both meat and vegan options). They also sell cakes and teas, with kids options on meals. The lady in charge was very friendly. Cost was mid-range - just under £10 for large breakfast

So glad we did as we discovered The Olive Tree and decided to go in. The staff were lovely and very friendly. We ordered our drinks and food. My husband went for the ploughmans and I had the homemade quiche. The service was quick and the food was very good indeed. My portion of quiche was massive but it was so delicious that I just had to eat it all, the pastry was fabulous. The ploughmans was also very good with a nice selection of cheeses. Customer service and general manners seem foreign here. Went for lunch with my mother and aunt and ended up being insulted and treated with the most laughable amount of respect, to the point I felt so uncomfortable I broke down in tears. The waitress went and took another family‘s oder who had quite clearly arrived a great deal post to our arrival and then when I merely glanced over in confusion she said to my mother „your daughter or whoever she is just gave me such a dirty look all you have to do is point it out“ when I am definitely not one to have the confidence to notify the staff that, actually, we were here first.

We were passing through this delightful village on our way home and decided to stop for a cup of tea. It was 3.15 pm and a notice on the door said that the tea-room closed at 4 pm. There was only one other couple inside. We ordered tea for two and were persuaded to share a fruit scone as those displayed on the counter looked inviting. We chose one that looked nice but the lady said she would get us a fresh one from the kitchen. The scone from the kitchen certainly did not seem freshly baked that day and just crumbled into a mess when cut. As we were pouring our tea another member of staff walked to the front entrance and put the closed sign up (at least 30 minutes prior to the advertised time) and then switched the quite pleasant background music off ! She bid farewell to the other lady and left. The remaining lady then started mopping the kitchen floor which was in full view of us and made us feel as though we were keeping her up ! We paid and left at 3.40 pm. Sadly this is typical of so many English tea-rooms/cafes. If you are open till 4 pm then turning music off and putting a closed sign up 40 minutes early is not at all welcoming and in fact will lose valuable profits. These people would do well to learn from our European neighbours who value customers right up to the last minute.

The afternoon tea here is priced resonably, however the only thing you can choose is your sandwich. We were given spiced fruit cake, carrot cake and a winter berry dessert, none of which myself and my friends like, so most of the afternoon tea we didn’t enjoy or eat. Going to the counter there were all different cakes we could have had the choice of. Included in the price is unlimited tea, but if you don’t like tea, the coffee is expensive and not included. I understand coffee from a machine is more expensive but why not offer unlimited instant coffee for those who don’t like tea. Also a 330ml can of Diet Coke was £2.25, outrageous. The best part about it was the sandwich, even then wasn’t worth £14.50, the cakes are definitely packet mixes too, they taste like Betty Crocker not homemade.

The time was 3pm so what's the point of staying open until 430pm (another hour and a half) and not serve food? We ended up in a chain pub when what we really wanted to do was support the local and smaller business. Hopefully the owner will take these comments on board and improve their service.

On the main street, which is very long indeed for a village (hence the name of the village), so seek it out if you need a break. Essentially it's a tea room which does simple food but there is plenty of variety, served with a smile. Baguettes, wraps and sandwiches made to order with a decent variety. Good coffee. Some limited cooked food but the surroundings are nice and if the weather permits, there is a nice terrace garden invisible from the main street. Toiletes spotless, always a good sign. Nicely done.

It is probably best to describe as "light lunch". Two of us had baked potatoes - these come with substantial fillings and lots of different choice, along with coleslaw and a generous side salad. One had an omelette - again with lots of salad and coleslaw, and I had a delicious quiche - a very hearty portion with a side salad. If you want to go for breakfast or afternoon tea they are both available and there are often gluten free choices. The cakes look scrumptious but never tried them - one day! I now see they do Sunday lunch as well which I am sure will be as delicious as the rest of their offerings, would think booking essential for this.

Don't get me wrong this is a lovely tea shop serving great food... we'd just some tea and a freshly baked scone in the garden (which is a delightful space, like the tea shop itself) but we were greeted by "we've stopped doing cooked food" even though we only wanted a light afternoon tea. The rule was repeated to all customers on being seated; and at 3:01pm when we heard a customer asking for a baked potato we overheard the young waitress saying "sorry no more cooked food, we don't serve anything past 3pm".

Today we had a very diaspointing experience, despite having ordered our drinks as we past the counter on the way to the rear garden at five to eleven, when the drinks arrived at one minute past eleven we were refused breakfast as breakfast finishes at eleven. We didnt touch our coffees but paid for them. Neither waitresses seemed bothered at our disappointment. Surprisingly inflexible for a small business. Whilst I accept people have cut off points for various reasons, I doubt this needed to be so strictly unsypethetically enforced.

Lovely little tea room, with a small but cosy back Garden. We both had a milkshake as it was very hot. They were lovely and creamy and came with cream on the top and a straw.

On Saturday 24/6 I popped into the Olive Tree with my partner and was told when I sat down there was no more hot food so I asked for balsonic and bread, the waitress said this wouldn't be a problem but shortly came back to say the chef/ owner would not allow me to have balsonic and bread and I had to have sandwich which was considerably more money and more effort to prepare

Having walked out of the Swan (separate review) we walked down the road and were greeted cheerfully at The Olive Tree when we enquired about breakfast. My friend had the full English and I had scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and it was reasonably priced. Nice environment and good service.

We called in here on a hot afternoon and ordered ice cream! The ice cream is home made and was delicious. Very refreshing on a hot day. Various flavours available and I recommend the peanut butter! We sat outside in the shade which was pleasant. Service good and staff friendly. Recommended.

We visited Long Melford yesterday on one of the hottest days in the year and after walking round no admiring the beautiful buildings in the village we popped in here for one of their home made ice creams - my husband choosing rhubarb and custard and I had a strawberry and peach one and they were absolutely delicious and not too expensive either! The interior of the cafe is very light, bright and inviting and has a lovely enclosed outside area too! The staff are also very friendly!

We were in Long Melford as a family of 4, visiting Melford Hall. We arrived early and had to kill some time. We wandered along the high street and stopped in the Olive Tree for a slice of cake and a cup of tea.

First time visiting and will be coming back. Lovely homemade food and setting is very modern and trendy. Waitresses were very pleasant and accommodating to our food requests as we had a starter to share. Not over priced either. Best place in Melford to go.

Excellent fresh food served by friendly and efficient staff who make me feel very welcome (I visit regularly). Cafe is prettily decorated and has a lovely homely feel. Sandwiches are made with lovely fresh bread and fillings are generous; their jacket potato with chilli and cheese is to die for. The cakes are amazing and far too tempting.

Having waited for what seemed an eternity I was presented with a chicken and bacon baguette which to coin an old phrase was "as tough as an old boot" the woman serving with the glasses was incredibly rude and quite frankly I didn't care for her establishment or her face. Will not be returning.

The young ladies working here are an absolute delight! We'd booked a table and were there early but were made very welcome even though we must have been a bit of a nuisance on a busy Easter Saturday! The hot chocolate I had was lovely and the other hot drinks looked delicious. I always have the homemade soup as it is so yummy and the rarebit and ploughmans lunch were both thoroughly enjoyed by my husband and mum. The cakes and desserts looked scrumptious, but alas we were too full! There are several places to eat in Long Melford, but we always make sure we book a table at the Olive Tree! It never disappoints - love it!...

We celebrated my sisters 50th birthday here ! We had the private function room upstairs which has recently been refurbished and it was lovely. We were allowed in early to decorate with banners and balloons. Baring in mind we were a large group and all opted for three courses the food was still all served together so we had no one waiting, the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We couldn't fault it all :) A few of the family stayed and were extremely happy with rooms and the yummy breakfast :)
