Lovely stay at The Mill Excellent food Lamb Shanks delicious as all the other food, All precautions taken due to Covid restrictions. This is our 4 th stay here would highly recommend

Lovely old mill building with working water wheel in the restaurant, set on the river which was slightly flooded today . Room 33 right on the river, ground floor. Room quite small but had an area to hang clothes and cube shelves to store other things. Tea and coffee as was provided . The bathroom again was small but functional with good shower. We booked a meal in restaurant. Hubby had the special which was roast turkey which he really enjoyed, I had the fish and chips which I was a bit disappointed with, although it look amazing the 6 chips were only just cooked and the fish had bones . Breakfast on the other hand was efficient , quickly served and delicious. All the staff were pleasant and happy to help . The hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the town centre. Hotel parking is free and provided just across the road from mill and you just need to log in at reception Will definitely return here

I have stayed at the Mill numerous times over the years and it is always a pleasure.It has a lovely casual relaxed warm atmosphere and the hard working staff are very friendly and helpful.I did have one small disappointment with my evening meal but it was trivial and disappointments at the Mill are rare.I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone whether it’s just a meal out or a stay.

Recently stayed at mill House hotel, room lovely and clean and warm and overlooked the river and meadow, lovely to see the swans and ducks.Dinner (lamb shanks) overcooked as were vegetables, couldn't guess what they were but sauted potatoes black.Breakfast looked nice but bacon undercooked and all very cold couldn't eat. Toast standard bread and was brought out well before breakfast. Fruit salad only melon.All staff very nice and friendly.

Stopped here after our walks. Eaten inside and out. I suppose the best I can say is, it's ok...Would be nice if they made more of outside. Lovely to look across the field, but the seating area is not special. Wooden tables. Dog friendly but nothing to enhance the space. Food ok (but had lunch once - sandwich with 'side' of chips -except they were on the same plate! No - they should be in a separate bowl!) Bar area also not special apart from the feature mill wheel which is lovely. Service pleasant.Needs a little bit of money to make it better.

Great hotel in Sudbury. Lovely setting with nice walks surrounding hotel. Lovely river running outside and at back of hotel. Lots of swans, ducks and animal friendly. Excellent service and staff too, very friendly and polite. Breakfast and evening meals excellent. Very clean rooms and bed so comfortable.We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend staying here 100%.

Ate in hotel first night and was expecting basic food. Very varied menu. Food hot , tasty and well presented.

Just returned from a two night break . Hotel and area was lovely . Food great and staff lovely BUT the hotel was extremely busy breakfast was in the restaurant which was packed quite a few people wandering about with no masks getting up to get juices . Bar area was very busy , tables close together and one party of 10 were seated together until a customer complained . The party had come down to stay from a lock down area . Anxious stay . Plus side lots of sanitiser around

Everything is ‘ok’... some of the staff are very lovely, others just don’t seem like they’re interested. Food is okay. A shame as it is a beautiful building/location. (Consensus locally is that The Mill rather think a lot of themselves...)

One of our favourite places to stay in beautiful Sudbury. The present weird situation we find ourselves in being coped with very well by the hard working friendly team. The food seems even tastier since our previous visits and the busy dining room was socially distanced and managed very professionally. We can’t speak highly enough of the lovely people who looked after us this time round. Constable and Gainsborough country on your doorstep, our room had a fantastic river view and we’re planning our next visit already.

Stayed here on a groupon deal very nice indeed nice clean room with a good shower.breakfast was very good and just a 10 minute walk into town with some nice pubs.

Had an overnight stay using a Travelzoo Voucher. First visit with our little dog, in a dog friendly Room. Lovely, clean Room overlooking the River and the Ducks. Had booked Dinner at the time of booking the Room but hadn't been recorded so this was a bit disappointing - but worked out well, as we had Dinner in the Bar area instead. Breakfast was very good. Staff were lovely. Great deal and would be happy to stay again based on this offer, as great value.

It’s such a shame to leave just one star as when we arrived we thought it looked cute in a sweet little town, but this place does not perform its basic functions. Pros: the food in the restaurant is great. Although the head waiter was a bit curt. The actual bed and pillows were ok. Cons: check in was a joke. Rushed but chaotic. They had no idea what my booking was (I booked through Great Little Breaks). Was told nothing about WiFi, breakfast times, parking etc. The rooms itself needs some series TLC. Warn and damaged walls. Mould smell and dated. The windows were peeling, holes on the frame that you could put your finger through! Spiders and cobwebs. I had to deal with 3 spiders and a wasp! The room was stuffy and charmless. Dirt marks on the bed sheets (not fun to see during Covid times). We did not sleep at all - all night I felt like there were things crawling on me. I sure there weren’t but it felt like it! Woken by ducks outside at 6am. And by other guests talking in surrounding rooms soon after (such thin walls). Noisy heating system sounded like things were stuck in the pipes. Not the hotels fault I know but at least make it cute and give ya ear plugs or something! Not that it mattered as were not asleep anyway. We could not wait to breakfast so we could just get out of the place. And that was not worth it!

Stayed there yesterday, it’s an absolute perfect location, beautiful meadows and rivers to one side, a plethora of streets, shops, pubs on the other.The hotel itself is great, good sized rooms and good bathrooms, the bar service wasn’t too shabby, the restaurant is a good size and the waiting staff are doing a great job.

I dont often do reviews and if I do it will be if I've had a good experience. My husband and i came here last night for dinner. We ordered drinks but our starter arrived before any drinks appeared. We had to ask where our drinks were. I cannot fault the food but found the service appalling. The head waiter was not friendly at all, clearly they were very busy but there is no excuse not to be friendly. When our steaks arrived the waitress didn't know which one was which and laughed and said 'it will be a surprise!!'. We had a nice evening as we don't go out very much but it's a shame it was spoiled by a grumpy waiter and inexperienced staff. Will stick to Henny Swan in future!!

Great hotel in rural setting on the edge of Sudbury. 10 min. Walk into town. Large rooms and lovely bar overlooking fields. Good walks straight room hotel to Melford Hall along Old branch rail line. Food in restaurant excellent, plus doing what out to help out until end of August.

Booked 42 nights here on a deal of travelzoo via great little breaks for a change of scenery,on first impressions all looked rosy,nice location,decent room with nice bathroom,quirky old watermill with great views at the back,on the first night we had the evening meal included in the deal,the menu was limited properly due to staff furloughing,but several of what was left was also off the menu,so only left 2 dishes for my vegetarian wife and only a few standard fair for me,we ordered and what we had was nice although we had to send the wife's back due to a long hair in the samosa,which they said they brought in so not there fault.The next day we had a cream tea on the deck and when it came the cups were badly stained and dirty,they were face up so the waitress had obviously seen them but still gave them to us and walked away,when I complained they said sorry but it should have never had happened.On the second night we ate in the hotel again,and again half the menu was off,so had a cheeseburger from the bar menu which was very nice but a bit pricey,but the government scheme made it good value,and the wife had curry,all the food was very nice and good quality.Breakfast the service was very slow waited 45 minutes from ordering to being served,and saw one old couple walk out without breakfast because of the wait.The staff were all pleasant but a bit chaotic and needed extra training in my opinion.On checkout I paid my bill and got a bit of a sarcastic reply when I asked for my change,which I wouldn't normally but I didn't think the whole experience warranted a tip,would I stay here again,properly if I couldn't find anything better in the same location.

The Mill is clearly complacent and trading off its location, judging by the fact that including me, 3 of the last 4 restaurant reviews are only 2 stars.We had lunch here last week on eat out to help out, which made it around half price and, thereby, more in keeping with what it was worth. It wasn't bad. However, I had exactly the same dish as I had the week before at Henny Swan, and this week at the Cock Horse in Lavenham. Both were infinitely superior to the Mill (since you ask, it was the steak), so first up, the chef at the Mill isn't great.Other ways you could improve:a) Don't have loud, intrusive 80s music blaring out in the restaurant. Come on, this is Sudbury and supposedly a cut-above place;b) Train your serving staff properly. Ours was gregarious but mistook joviality for efficiency, in particular intruding on our personal space (during the present crisis, I would have thought utterly inexcusable, mask or not);c) Have an accurate menu. We arrived to be informed that no less than FOUR items on it were off. One would be understandable. FOUR means complacency / mismanagement;d) Moreover, deliver what you advertise. We had the bread bowl for starter, supposedly including music bread (it didn't), two of us then had steaks, supposedly with triple-cooked chips (the chips were NOT triple cooked), and another of us had the veggie curry, supposedly with onion bhaji (missing). This is all amateurish, isn't it?I'm sure if the Mill reads this they will say we should have pointed this out at the time. In fact, there are so many things they got wrong, we wouldn't have known where to start.Dessert was nice, though!!

Always average, great location. Staff are let down by obviously poor management. Could be so good! Frustrating.

Booked using a Travelzoo voucher but got a wonderful room in the main old mill building overlooking the water and animals in the fields beyond. Dinner was great and staff were very friendly and helpful. Free parking and close to the town. Would have given 5 stars but the English breakfast was not quite 100% with toast cremated in an automated "conveyor" machine, sausage, hash brown and eggs undercooked, and ingredients piled on top of each other on the plate so bacon underneath was soggy as it was underneath the beans etc.

The restaurant has a lovely setting, and we have eaten here before, but tonight the service was a bit of a shambles and the food disappointing and overpriced. The seasonal veg side dish was miniscule, and inexplicably consisted of three pickled onions, a few bits of celery, a couple of broad beans and some peas - a snip at £3.50! Would argue that menu was overpriced as a whole, even allowing for reduction of £10 a head on government 'eat out' scheme.

Cracking location within walking distance of the town. Our room was clean and well maintained. We had no complaints. Had a meal in the restaurant which was ok but a tad overpriced for what we experienced. Congratulations to the hard working waiter with the ponytail. He was the only waiter working on the evening we visited the restaurant. He was rushed off his feet!Only criticism was the staff worked hard but there weren't enough of them.Due to poor staffing ratio's this appeared to compromise appropriate cleaning regimes on occasions due to amount of customers in the bar areas. Such a shame.

We were pleasantly surprised. Lovely big room with everything we needed. Clean and well presented bathroom. Comfy bed. Food was tasty, but we decided to have breakfast in our room as we weren’t quite comfortable with the Covid precautions....there was a buffet, little social distancing, staff were not wearing masks and no obvious signs of hand washing/sanitising. Having said that, the staff were fantastic and certainly a credit to the hotel . We loved the outside water meadow views and nearby Lavenham. Although over the outside seating area, our room no 25, was quiet. Parking is free and easy to access. If we were in the area, we would stay here again.

My favourite place for day drinks with the girls! Gorgeous location as shown in pictures attached, lovely staff and atmosphere. 10/10 would recommend

The Mill Hotel is very comfortable with lovely views over the water meadows. The terrace is a pleasant spot for a meal or just a drink. The staff are all very friendly and helpful.

What a wonderful hotel and restaurant, I stayed here whilst on a business trip to Suffolk and what an amazing find ! The food is absolutely exceptional and service is second to none ! Will definitely be coming back

Love the relaxed feel of the mill both inside and out. The meadows are so tranquil and perfect for walking dogs. This was our first meal since lockdown and it was so well cooked as it is each time. Had a tasty salad which was just the right amount for lunch. Nearly all the tables outside had gone, and the only ones left had no umbrella so it was a bit hot. But plenty of tables inside so not a problem

This place is an absolute joke. Trying to charge £100 for parking because they have a system for the car park which isn’t clearly stated at all. No signs and the staff don’t mention it just so that they can get extra money if you’re going here don’t use the car park. If I’m honest don’t come here at all.

I parked in the hotel car park and had a meal in the restaurant. A week later I got a £100 fine for not registering my car at the bar. I appealed and included my credit card receipt which showed I was in the hotel for the time I parked but the appeal was rejected. I totally understand that they need to keep their car park for hotel users, but this is clearly just about making money. Could the waiting staff not have asked if we had a car? If that's the sort of business to which you want give your custom then fine, but I won't be going back there.

booked 2 night special here including breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner. We arrived 1/2 hour before check and told to go away. Room was very small, afternoon tea on first day included stale scones. Dinner first night was already sold out of preferred mains option even at 7.15. Nevertheless, dinner on each night was really good. Second afternoon tea had fresh scones. With the exception of the initial receptionist, the rest of the staff were really friendly. It a dog friendly hotel adjacent to a flood plain which is great for dog walks. Walk into town is quite short and enjoyable. Would consider returning in future.

Fabulous stay. Beautiful location, room overlooking river and meadows, staff incredibly welcoming and friendly , lovely chairs around wood burner in the bar with a great range of gins.Excellent menu for evening dinner and a good breakfast. We could not fault The Mill at all.We will definitely stay again this summer to experience the outside roof top bar.

We arrived early but we parked a registered our car. Walked into town for an afternoon tea at the Strawberry teapot We a a choice of tables and sat at a window table. The tea and cakes arrived with a selection of sandwiches Very good.

We were given an overnight stay, with cream tea, evening meal & breakfast at this hotel.On arrival (2.25pm)we were told to wait as customers are not registered until 2.30pm. Another couple were also waiting in the only available seats in the entrance lobby. We were eventually checked in at 2.50pm. This is the first time we have ever been told to wait in all our travels in & outside of this country. Not a great start as we had travelled through storm Dennis to get there!Once seen we were told our room was on the third floor, no lift.The room itself was clean and roomy with a fantastic view of the river, the bonus of being on the third floor .Our cream tea (with coffee) was good. The evening meal was a delight. We stayed on a Sunday & they catered for a roast dinner which we appreciated. The food is really great quality, well cooked & presented.There was a reasonable choice by customers needs.It is in a very picturesque setting.We did walk into town but both found it disappointing and wouldn't rush back to visit there.

Just had a really nice break at the Mill. We have been 3 or 4 times and it's still so goodGreat being on the river so relaxing. The food is superb the chef is great the taste and presentation is so special The service from the staff was so good nothing too much trouble. My best friend and I decided to have a girlie lunch oh wow we were not disappointed. Set in the best Suffolk countryside The Mill Hotel features a water mill as a central focal point in the middle of the restaurant/bar. My friend choose the sirloin steak which was cooked to perfection, with chips that were homemade and the perfect accompaniment, together with mushrooms and tomatoes. My friends verdict best steak out she'd had in years. I choose the skate with samphire, chorizo and caper butter. WOW every mouthful was a delight, beautiful combination of flavours and well presented. A couple of glasses of wine accompanied our meal and with great service we left, replete and looking forward to our next visit.

Booked for 4 adults initially and phoned to change to 6 people and also ask if we could change sandwich choices which the waitress checked with kitchen and took our order. On arrival, table only booked for four people and no message re sandwich choice. Waitress was extremely rude and we felt rushed. The sandwiches and cakes were all very nice but we left still feeling a bit hungry, we are always usually full to bursting after an afternoon tea! The waitresses are rushing all over the place and it was not a relaxing environment because of this. Will not return for food or recommend although we love the setting. I also felt a ghostly presence! I was poked roughly in the back twice while sitting in the restaurant with no one behind me and only my elderly mother next to me who can’t lift her arms. Spooky!

Fantastic hotel with lots of history.My other half brought me here for a getaway treat for my birthday. Evening meal was fantastic & all you can eat breakfast just as superb.The staff are all very friendly & always seem to be rushing around to cater for & look after customers.We cannot praise all the hard working staff, Anthony is a lovely guy & couldn’t do enough to make sure we had a pleasant stay & the manager also couldn’t do enough to ensure we enjoyed our stay. We can’t speak highly enough of the staff & excellent customer service we received throughout our visit. Thank you, we would definitely recommend this hotel & we will definitely be back.

Very quiet location next to the river and millpond. The bar is cosy with the mill wheel still working in the middle of the room. Our room was overlooking the river, clean and tidy. The restaurant menu was quite extensive with plenty of choice. The staff were friendly and helpful. The town centre is a short 10min walk away with good market on a Thursday.

Went for a family celebration meal and then stayed over for the night. Everything was excellent, the food, the service and the room. Couldn’t ask for anything better.

Ate here whilst staying at the hotel. Friendly service from the guy running the restaurant. Whitebait was a bit of a small portion but quite nice. Main of goats cheese frittata was nice with good potatoes and a side salad. Nice restaurant, probably really nicer in the summer. What I would say is given their prices they may need to step it up a bit so their dishes firmly justify their price tag.

Lovely afternoon tea, staff were so attentive. Food was yummy.......the scones were one of the nicest I have had. Will definitely go back.

great value afternoon tea, with fizz, served by a superb waitress called Kaz. Take a bow young lady as your customer service skills were exemplary. Good portions and tasty food made this an excellent afternoon.

I recently visited the Mill Hotel for lunch in the bar with 3 friends. The bar, which has stunning views over the river and water meadows was warm and cosy. On arrival the receptionist took details of the car for the hotel car park but failed to show any further interest and we were left to find our way to the bar and our table. We sat and waited for service but no one came so eventually we went up to the bar to be told that the procedure was to order at the bar and pay for our meals as we ordered.

We were looking forward to a nice catch up with friends in the bar but we were disappointed. On arrival the receptionist was not helpful. The setting of the bar was very good. Some of our party had Skate wings which were sent back. The bar staff dealt with the situation correctly.

My friends arranged a baby shower here for me. They were able to put up their own decorations in a room upstairs and were able to bring in cupcakes they had made for the occasion. The food provided was good and the member of staff was lovely. They opened up a hatch in the room that served as a bar which meant we didn’t need to go up and downstairs to get drinks. Tea and coffee were also provided. We had a lovely time and it was a great way to celebrate the impending arrival of my son.

Didn’t love the afternoon tea. Beautiful building and views of the meadows but generally disappointed food. Hit and miss with the service. A nice place for just a cuppa and a chat or meeting, but there are way better places around for food.

Interesting hotel with lots of history. Pleasant views out to water-meadows and we sat right by the old water-wheel (behind glass). Somewhat lacking in welcome and we wandered around a bit to find out where to go but the waiter was friendly. The tea was tasty with a good choice of sandwiches, cakes and a large scone each. We were offered tea and coffee refills. All in all it was a good experience.

Been a number of times. You can't beat this place for location, over looking Meadows with roof top seating, perfect on a sunny day.

We've stayed before. Ma'am used to work at the adjacent hospital (now converted to housing) and it brings back happy memories. A listed site, beautifully set in Constable country by the river Stour, there is little to fault. Staff, rooms, food all excellent. Be aware it is a listed building, so no lift - check if you have problems climbing stairs. We were lucky to have a room with superb views over the water meadows.

Stayed for four nights. Staff were friendly and helpful from reception on arrival to our checkout. Asked many times if everything was to our satisfaction. Our room was large and overlooked the water marshes and river. Breakfast was more than sufficient with fruit, cereal and cooked items. The bars are comfortable but we ( I ) thought drink prices were a little excessive. Perhaps it’s just a northern thing !

We arrived on a Thursday and were staying that night going to a wedding further out and returning Saturday. There we many of us staying at this time and many of us shared a similar experience. Our check in was friendly, our room was very small and needs a refurb (beds/blankets/carpet) and a deep clean. Every window as far as I could see is manky dirty on the outside. Downstairs at floor level the ceiling is unusually low and I had trouble traversing the various lights, smoke alarms and beams. The next morning for breakfast there was a tiny amount of fresh fruit and the coffee was not good. Except for the lady that checked us in, the staff were exceptionally rude. There was also leak at reception which closed the stairs leading to the bedrooms leaving a walk through the entire first level (signs done were as clear as mud!) On returning on the Saturday we were told that check in would be 2.30pm by a member of our group. We went for a walk through town and did a bit of shopping and then lunch. We went back to reception at about 1.30pm (and we could see by room keys ready on the counter) and were told we could not check in before 2.30pm in a very rude manner. I did not want to stay but the group said to let it go. I did. The room on Saturday was a bit better than the Thursday but still needs a refurb. The location is really good, surroundings are fab but this hotel needs new management, investment and beyond to correct it. Manners cost nothing but they still could not provide them, amazing in this day and age.

Popped in with my partner for afternoon tea. The service and quality of good at the Mill cannot be faulted. Love this old place Been coming here for years. Well done everyone.

We visited on a very warm bank holiday weekend .... The roast dinners were absolutely lovely and the veggie option was delicious..... Service was warm and friendly .... athe only negative was that there was no air conditioning so we were all really warm !!

I ate a couple of times at The Mill and the food is hit and miss. Some of it is really approaching a good restaurant, particularly the fish dishes (tried a couple) and nothing was over- or under-cooked. Also, service was quick. In other ways it was not quite there yet: too much butter and grease in most of the things I tried, especially the Sunday roast. It was pleasant enough though, and if staying in the hotel I would go again to save a trip out.

Went recently for a few drinks on a rare Child free weekend, was lovely, the view was amazing, the staff were friendly, I asked for a cocktail but as they dont do them, they recommended a drink to me and it was perfect, definitely will return!

A lovely friendly place with polite,pleasant staff. Good menu with clear markings for gluten free and other allergies. Great vegan and vegetarian options too.

After a cool reception, the service was good.

After a long walk around town and along the river I ended up on the roof terrace for a cold shandy. Great views across the water meadows.

Four of us had Sunday lunch in your restaurant, the food was ok, but I have to say the service was not good, when the main course arrived the starter plates were still on the table, nobody collected our empty glasses, we ended up with about 15 empty glasses on the table, it felt like a bad runner pub, and when we asked for the bill, an very young girl looked not really happy.

The afternoon tea was delicious the sandwiches was lovely the scones was delightful and the cakes apart from the macaroons was all had maid big pot of tea for 2 people and a glass of Prosecco each the service was very good will be going back again

Tired, rundown, dirty seating, stains all over the chairs, coffee machine broken, so had to have a cafetière which was not working properly so there were lots of coffee grounds in cup.

I spent 2 night break at Mill Hotel. We have stayed their many times and have always been very happy .I saw some bad reviews before we left and wondered if it would be as good I no needed to worry we had a wonderful time could not fault anything.Staff friendly and polite Food wonderful our room was lovely .Cannot wait to go back

Fine dining excellent team! Wonderful areas pre dinner to relax in. Lovely views of the local landscape from all areas. A good variety of gins and other spirits and wines. I liked the shanties as well as it was a really hot day! When on the wine later they had a good choice. Recommend it for a very pleasant eater on tea, evening meal or rest for a few days.

A table for 2 was booked to celebrate my birthday and I have to say the whole Mill restaurant experience ruined it completely. A great disappointment!

Husband booked a night as a surprise for my birthday. I have stayed in various hotels ranging from 3* to 5* and I don’t think I’m particularly picky however if an establishment promises one thing and gives another, its disappointing. It was one thing after another:-

We had an Evening Meal and a Breakfast here and I must say the food was excellent throughout. The staff were friendly helpful and knowledgeable with perfect timing for everything. I would definitely recommend eating here and I would absolutely do so again.

We had a delicious afternoon cream tea. The scone were lovely and light and not too large. The whole selection was lovely. The only minor criticisms, were that the waitress looked blank when I requested Darjeeling tea and we weren’t offered alternative favours of jam. It was a shame that they didn’t have some more attractive tea pots. Overall I would recommend the Mill Hotel afternoon tea.

Friends took me here for afternoon tea as a treat for my birthday,it was really lovely.The staff were very pleasant and helpful.The restaurant was very clean. Price was very good.

I’ve given this what I would say is a generous 3/5. We came last year and it was lovely, so much so that we exchanged a buyagift voucher of higher value for a few afternoon teas here recently. Sadly, we will be exchanging the others as we aren’t keen to come back after today.

We were bought afternoon tea as a Christmas gift by The Carer and Harper’s Bizarre and have to say the overall experience was first class.

Had a couple of nights here recently and really enjoyed our stay. The location is idyllic on the banks of the River Stour and a 6 minute walk into town. The food in the restaurant was beautifully cooked and presented but the portions we had were a little on the small side, though other people had ordered other meals and they seemed to be much larger servings. We upgraded to a superior room which was very comfortable, large and well appointed. Some of the rooms are very close to the 1st floor terrace so in the warmer weather when more people are outside this could easily affect privacy or tranquility.

A wonderful old building full of character, located close to the town centre and yet it is right on top of the preserved wet lands with great walks for miles. Restaurant serves good food and the bar has a good selection of beers.

My partner and I came here for the first time for afternoon tea to celebrate our anniversary using a Groupon Voucher and we were disappointed. We were greeted by a young waitress who took our Groupon code, asked us if we wanted tea or coffee and told us to sit wherever we wanted. We took our seats and our drinks were brought over. The waitress then dashed off before we could reiterate I had a nut allergy (we had told them when booking). The sandwiches and cakes shortly arrived after we received our drinks by an older stern looking lady. I immediately said I had a nut allergy as I could see there was walnut cake and one of the sandwiches was covered in nuts. We explained we had mentioned this at the time of booking and had been told it was fine. The older waitress said nothing took it back to the kitchen, huffing as she went, and returned it with half the contents missing, but pieces of nuts were still on the plate. As I was unsure of what nuts were on the plate as all the staff had disappeared, I was too concerned to eat anything which ruined the whole experience. Unfortunately, as they couldn't take my allergy seriously, we will not be returning.

We stayed in the hotel on a DB&B.; We live an hour away so just wanted a nice dinner and night out. The dinner we had was very good. Portions are not big, and I was disappointed with the goats cheese starter although - after 3 courses - I was full so maybe the chef knows best.

We sometimes call in here for lunch on a Saturday. Beautiful location on the river. Restaurant or pub area. Last Saturday we had a lovely experience. Today not so good. First our sandwiches came out on the wrong bread, ie I ordered white and hubby brown but they mixed them up. Soon rectified. However the waitress was grumpy and tutted as she walked away, bought our sandwiches back but no utensils, no napkins then disappeared. The gentleman waiter was much more cheerful and helpful but very busy. The bread on our sandwiches was not buttered, the fillings skimpy - we had to spread it out using a crisp. Real difference to the previous weekend when they’d been so full it was a meal in itself. Had anyone come by we’d have said something but after ten mins decided to just eat and go as we had other things to do. Tasteless coronation chicken, worse I’ve had. We will pop in again to give another chance but if not improved will find somewhere else.

My husband and I booked a table here for Valentine's evening based on the reviews, the rating and the a la carte menu; we were not attracted by the Valentine's menu. However, we found the food disappointing and the service slow, although the staff were very friendly. Unfortunately my soup was nearly cold and the ravioli ordered by my husband was not ravioli but tortellini and somewhat tasteless. I enjoyed the gnocchi and especially the mushrooms but the green beans I ordered did not appear. My husband found his steak not particularly appetising. I can recommend the mango crème brulee but don't think we shall be eating there again very soon.

My wife and I stayed at The Mill on Valentine's Day and had an evening meal at The Riverside Restaurant. The food, all three courses, was excellent. We both had assiete of seafood for starter, Suffolk lamb 3 ways for main, and baked vanilla custard for dessert. The highlights were the crispy lamb belly and the shortbread fingers but it was all excellent. For the food alone this would have been a five star review but the service was very poor. We waited ten minutes after arrival before anyone returned to our table, the food order was taken before the drink order, the water wasn't poured by the server when it arrived, we waited nearly forty minutes for our mains, and when we enquired when it would arrive we were told 'it won't be long, we're busy'. As we had arrived at 8.30pm most of the diners had finished and departed so they clearly weren't busy. We then waited another twenty minutes before a server took our dessert and coffee order. The coffee arrived before the dessert, then we waited another twenty minutes for someone to return to the restaurant so we could ask for our bill, but as no-one appeared, and by now it was 11.10pm, we left and paid in the morning. Only one of the servers actually smiled and we served by at least four different servers which is probably why they took so long to do everything as they all seemed to be covering all the tables rather than dedicated servers handling dedicated tables. If they could sort the service out this venue would be highly recommended.

A lovely hotel, situated next the scenic meadows/ river Stour. Rooms are large an comfortable with a good selection of snacks in mini bar. Staff are friendly and helpful. Restaurant serves nouvelle portions, so if you have a healthy appetite, these may be a bit light fir you. However, buffet breakfast makes up for this. Would totally recommend for a long weekend break.

Had three brilliant meals here now. The portions are not big, well balanced so you can eat all three. The food is very well cooked and bursting with flavour, lovely bisque or jus depending what you are having. The staff are very friendly and the restaurant has a nice atmosphere and lighting. The mill wheel turning makes a very interesting feature, Also there is a nice bar area.

I don’t think you can beat the mill for ambiance and scenery although the rooms and drinks are well over priced

Throughly enjoyed our stay at the Mill Hotel. Our room overlooked the river and meadows, where there are footpaths for walking. Would recommend getting a superior room, which is what we had. The regular rooms are a bit small. The restaurant is excellent and the afternoon tea delicious! All the staff were very friendly.

I have been a regular patron of this establishment close on 15 years.l popped in on Christmas Day whilst out with my partner and daughter.

What a lovely place to eat. We traveled to the hotel with a coach party what a lovely find the food is excellent. The presentation of the dishes and the variety and the service were excellent.

Really quirky place with great views across the water meadows from the bar area, old mill wheel inside a real feature combined with tip top food makes this a great place to visit.

Hadn't been in the Mill Hotel since I was a child so thought myself and my friend would give the afternoon tea a try.

Afternoon tea was politely served and the restaurant is familiar to us from many other visits for lunch and dinner.Afternoon tea however was a meagre affair with a single scone per person and a shared tiny pot of jam and cream. Sandwiches were delightful but too few and the cake selection was equally limited.

Disappointing. I had bought my mum a voucher for afternoon tea for her birthday. There were 3 finger sandwiches each and a miniscule circular one. I had told them no salmon or red meat for me and one of my sandwiches contained a slice of tomato and a shred of lettuce! I thought the days people thought vegetarians just ate salad were long gone...the other sandwiches were ok. There was a teeny tiny pot of jam between 2 though the scones were warm and tasted ok. However the main issue was with the top layer (desserts). The meringues were her hard (almost stale) and extremely sweet so we couldn't eat them. What looked like lemon pissed wasn't lemon. In fact I don't know what it was but it would have been a lot better if it was lemon. The eclairs looked good but after taking a big bite I'm afraid I had to spit it out.i have never bitten into an eclair that didn't have cream inside and this one had some sweet runny sauce (I couldn't tell you what it was).My sister took a bite and her reaction was the same. I have eaten here before and it's been good but I will not be paying for afternoon tea again here. The best thing about it was the surroundings.

We're locals and fans of The Mill. Let's get that out there! We visit The Mill regularly for it's beautiful location and general feel. Sadly our visit a few weeks ago has left us feeling bereft.

Good service good food good value. I've had breakfast here and dinner. The menu is good, good choices, the breakfast is typical with a buffet so the eggs can be overdone, so go in early. The dinner was very good indeed.

We took some collegues out for the evening as we were working nearby, we really like the restaurant and it is an amazing setting with the water wheel. However we dont know has changed but last night was not very good.
