Booked a table for 4 for lunch as we know it can get busy. What a great menu selection and service, the only disappointment was that there was such a great choice we will definately be going back. The curry was exceptional as was the apple crumble. Definate 5 stars.

Great little pub. Every village needs a pub like this one. Fair prices for well kept local ales. Nice wine for the Mrs. Friendly publicans and locals. Good food prices. Can't ask for more than that. Made a note of The White Horse Inn while cycling past towards a ride around Alton Water. Stopped in on our way back noting straight away that it was a good old traditional pub, family and dogs welcome too. Greeted and served immediately by friendly staff, so we decided to eat here as well. I had a chilli with chips, my wife settled for a good old egg, ham and chips. Must say that we both enjoyed our food. It was such good value for money and hearty portions. Certainly worth popping in if you are passing.

Chris the Chef even brings Tilly to work. She is not allowed in the kitchen of course. Thoroughly recommend and as we don't live too far away we can always go without the caravan.

This pub is a lovely historic building in a pretty setting. The atmosphere (when we were there on Sunday lunchtime) was quiet and pleasant. Food and service were both really good with a good choice of mains and deserts with veggies well catered for. The Sunday roast was really good - the best pub one I have had in ages. It had an excellent variety of vegetables but my friends were less impressed than I was with the shredded sweet potato and cauliflower cheese (I was happy with these additions). 'Normal' vegetables also included. Value-wise it is about the norm, so I would have liked a bit cheaper but there are many that cost more. The toilets are unusual in that they are outside - not a problem in summer but maybe a pain in the depths of winter?Service was good and the welcome friendly. Staff all young and very good/efficient and pleasant. Overall really pleased with this find. I would go again and I also love that it is a short walk too the quieter end of Alton reservoir so you can walk off your meal should you so wish.

My other half had the steak burger. Again, very tasty & cooked well. My only complaint is that the menu states to add cheese or bacon, it's £2 each which I think is a bit much. He wanted bacon, which is fine, but it was one tiny piece of normal bacon. For 2 quid, was expecting something a bit more than that! Service still a bit rocky but that should come in time. We called for lunch on Wednesday 7th Feb, when we arrived in the dining room it felt colder than outside, no one else eating but it was only 12.30. We ordered drinks which were fine a good pint of Adnams, we noticed 2 woodburners but unfortunately not lit so we sat drinking cold beer in our coats, we told the waitress we were cold, she replied the wind is wrong it blows into the fire so we won't be lighting them, really we should have left then but decided to order, the waitress said the specials pie is steak in red wine and mustard gravy, just the thing to warm us, again unfortunately when it came it was a dish of watery tasteless minced beef with a disc of puff pastry frozen chips and peas/ sweet corn, considering the photos of roast lamb a work top full of fresh dug veg etc on their website which lured us we felt disappointed, so sat alone in the dining room freezing cold with a tasteless lunch means we won't be returning.

I've lived in the area for 5 years, and been to many pubs in South Suffolk, but despite visiting Alton Water many times, I'd never been to the White Horse. We arrived just about an hour before the kitchen opened in the evening, with a very hungry 3 year old and a very tired 84 year old. The look on my wife's face must have said it all, and I think the Chef who wasn't quite on duty yet saw my predicament, and they kindly opened the kitchen early. Coloring in for my daughter, great food, doggie friendly, a cracking pint, and the friendliest landlady I've come across. Everything a pub should be with none of the gastro pompousness. My only thought would be in the summer, when my daughter has abundant energy, there was once a little playground at the back, but seems shut off an old, and I'd be even more keen to revisit knowing there was a distraction in the garden for her. But that won't stop us going again.Highly recommended....

Called in on the off chance that they'd have a table at Sunday lunchtime, which they had. Received a friendly welcome and we were well looked after by the helpful waitresses. A varied menu of good pub food ( steak pie and lamb pudding can both be recommended) at prices well in keeping with other establishments. I couldn't help but notice that a vegan on the next table was having trouble finding something suitable , but this posed no problem as the chef popped out to offer a few suggestions which he was happy to cook, even though they were not on the menu, and it was a busy Sunday lunchtime. One other thing that I really liked about this place was that it wasn't trying to be flash and it felt like a traditional Suffolk village pub of days gone by where a passer by was welcomed and well looked after. We did have to wait a while for the food to arrive, but personally, I never think this is a bad thing. The pub was also dog friendly, as long as kept on leads.

I am writing this while sitting in a&e with a friend having attended the fireworks display at the White Horse.Having seen a firework Mis-fire and miss members of the public by inches we turned to move and my friend got hit in the face with a bit of firework.Immediately I informed the girl on the BBQ who shouted to some else to help. You would think this person was a first aider, no he simply picked up some blue roll and offered a short length of it.We then went inside the pub, and I told them what had happened, after a few minutes of looking a terribly understocked first aid kit was thrust at me. No sooner had that happened that all the barmaids disappeared. We sat in the bar for a few minutes while we tried to make sure the rest of our friends and their children left as soon as possible, but in that time not one person from the pub or fireworks came to ask if everything was ok.I can't express how appalled I am about it all. Having read guidelines on displays in the past, I can't see how they conformed to very many of them. This was an accident waiting to happen, which in some respects was lucky it happened to an adult instead of one of the numerous children there.Never go to fireworks here!! And if their attitude to something so dangerous is this bad why would you trust it for anything!!

We visited this pub on the recommendation of a friend, firstly the staff were very unhelpful not even showing us to our table. After ordering food we waited over 40 mins for our food (we were the only table in restaurant). The meat in the beef and ale pie needed at least another hours cooking. The vegetables were under cooked and to rustic very unpleasant. The overall experience was very poor.

On holiday at Pin Mill, and thought we would give the White Horse a look. Promised much but didn't deliver. Lack of lunchtime trade saw only a limited menu offered, mostly based on Baguettes and Baked potatoes. Tried the Ploughmans only to find the Baguettes were yesterdays (another couple also remarked on this), 3 real ales were on offer but only one was available, the reason - the other 2 were waiting to have the pipes cleaned!!!. We sat outside and were offered a tab, despite clearly being strangers (don`t the owners read the press?). The female staff were very helpful and friendly but perhaps need some leadership.

We parked our caravan in the small field behind the pub for a couple of nights and had 2 lunches and 2 evening meals here with beers, etc. We were made to feel very welcome by the owner, staff and locals. The meals were great and our dog, Scrumpy, was given a plate full of meaty bits each day. This is a gem of a pub. You have to visit it to experience what traditional Suffolk pubs used to be like before wide screen tv and one armed bandits. Highly recommended!!!

We love this pub. It's a little gem! It has a gorgeous garden with lovely flowers; great for a summers day with the dog. We have been for a meal a few times here & the food was always lush. Good portions, cooked well with a varied menu.

We had a lovely walk round the Alton Water Reservoir stopping off halfway round at the White Horse Tattingstone. Very friendly staff, beautiful old pub. We had BLT baguettes and they were delicious. You need to put some signs out at the car park telling everyone that it's not far up that hill ! I'm sure we'll be back.

Had lunch today at The White Horse Inn and was very impressed with the refurbishment. The place has been made brighter and the staff are very welcoming. I had "Lucy's spicy beef chilli" which I was warned was quite hot. It lived up to it's description being a really tasty and spicy meal which is just what I was hoping for. Others in our group had baguettes which came with a simple green salad and crisps but were filling and good value. The pub also has a good selection of beer. Will definitely visit again. I would add that the only downside are the drafty outside gents loos which are situated in the car park. Not ideal on a rainy day.

I love a place where the kids menu was anything on the main menu, just smaller portions! The welcome was warm and friendly, children easily and welcomingly accommodated and we left with the crusts off the bread to go feed the ducks in the local pond. Food was tasty, plentiful and a good choice on the menu. Did the trick for a no frills quick easy stop for pub lunch before heading back to Jimmy's farm thereby avoiding the 30min wait to be seated in their restaurant and we probably saved a good 20 quid too!

I think that this place must recently have changed hands. Certainly no sign of the curries on the menu as praised in a recent review. The building itself is a bit shabby outside. Staff friendly; reasonable choice of beer (although there seemed to be a bit of fuss about the temperature of serving); food very average, but not expensive.

We were staying at the nearby Travel Lodge, and the receptionist recommended the White Horse. As it was close we thought we'd give it a go. It looked a little rough from the outside, but decided to give it a go. To be honest wasn't expecting much, but the food was amazing. I had a Lamb Jalfrezi, as did my Step-Dad, my cousin had a burger, and her partner had the Gammon Steak. We were all blown away with the quality of the food. Well presented, and full of flavour with large portions. It is a very rare occasion when all things of those are present in pub grub. The price was certainly in-line with what you would expect to say.Absolutely brilliant

Four of us ate here last Friday evening - loved it! Great atmosphere, especially with the wood burner lit, decent beer and great food in an old fashioned country pub. I had the chicken madras which was a good as I have had anywhere, but I would say the star of the show was the burger which is a double decker with cheese and bacon. Ahh, happy days!

Me and my wife was travelling for a walk in our car when we both decided that we were hungry and chanced a visit to a pub which had been recommended to us by someone we'd asked about where to find good food in the area and decided to try the white horse inn in a village called Tattingstone in suffolk when we entered the pub had a lovely warm fire going and a small crowd at the bar which everyone was really friendly and made us feel welcome we ordered our meal My wife had vegetable stroganoff and i had the best sausages and creamy mash potatoe and peas i'd ever had my wife was very pleased with her meal and said how delicious it was and it was a refreshing change for her not to be offered a vegetable lasagne or fish being a vegetarian most pubs we go to are very limited on their choices for her to have something that she'd enjoy eating so it was brill .The landlord and his daughter were especially friendly and we both had a lovely chat with them if anyone is looking for a great meal and lovely atmosphere in a pub this is the place to go .It is just a stones throw from Alton Water reservoir so after your bike ride or activity i'd recommend this pub to anyone beats jimmys farm on price and quality and quantity any day.

Stopped off for lunch after walking around Alton Water not knowing what to expect. The staff were very welcoming to myself, husband and our four legged friend, they even provided him with a bowl of water (the dog). To take advantage of the beautiful weather we decided to eat our Sunday lunch in the garden. Well, I have to say that this is one of the nicest pub gardens I have been in during my travels, especially because the setting is perfect, with no cars going past and the garden is well maintained. It didn't take long for our roast dinner to arrive (we both had the roast lamb) and we weren't disappointed, just how a pub roast dinner should be. Looking forward to return very soon... Thanks again..

So pleased the new kitchen has been fitted. Big Chris has a wealth of experience and has come up with a good and varied menu. As a coeliac it's often hard to eat out great to see a menu that's adaptable. Good choice of 3 real ales which the other half loved. (Adams, doom bar and tribute.) often changing. Had a lovely risotto and the other half had fish and chips both very generous portions. Also do some takeaway food such as curry and fish and chips. Can't wait to go back it's your typical country pub.

I am so proud to be compared to Basil Faulty... Firstly there are no photos of me any where on the website, so how do they know I was the landlord.Secondly everyone gets charged as a business to take cards, so I would like to know who this person banks with.. If someone is rude to me I am afraid I give it back. This is my house, and I choose to open it to the public.Feel free to come and visit, the majority have a good time, but some people spend their lives complaining about everything that wasn't what they expected.A sense of humour is always an advantage in life.....
