A Perfect Friday Afternoon Dining Experience This is by far my favourite restaurant. From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly attentive, friendly, and personable, all while maintaining a high level of professionalism. Their warm and genuine approach makes a great experience We chose the set lunch menu with the wine flight, which offered amazing value for money. The only difficulty was deciding what to order from such a well-curated and tempting selection of dishes. Each course was beautifully presented and bursting with flavour, with the wine pairings expertly chosen to complement every bite. A standout moment was when Tom personally came out to speak with diners—such a great touch. From start to finish, everything was perfect—from the food to the service. An excellent way to spend a Friday afternoon, and I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

Ever since me and my wife decided we were going to spend part of our honeymoon in Edinburgh we also decided we had to try out the restaurant. It did not disappoint. The service was too notch and I food was on a whole other level. We had heard about the baker scallop and were lucky enough to try it and this is now my favorite thing I have ever eaten bar none.

Wow! The food was absolutely divine and the service was impeccable. We could not fault a thing and the attention to detail was incredible, we even had a card on our table wishing us a happy anniversary. Not something we could afford to do very often, but an experience we will never forget. Thanks for making our anniversary so very special.

We went for the surprise tasting menu and it did not disappoint. From the starters through the mains and the deserts every single dish was a delight. But the highlights that I have to mention are the scallops and the lamb were my favourites and the best dishes I have tried so far. Can't recommend it enough.

Since seeing The Kitchin on BBC’s Remarkable Places to Eat in Scotland, this has been on my bucket list since the show aired in 2020. We recently went for dinner on Good Friday and decided on the chef’s tasting menu with paired wines. This dinner was unforgettable! The John Dory melted in our mouths, perfectly paired with a seaweed and mussel jus. The Orkney scallops baked in the shell with a pastry top were amazing! Each dish was a delight, and the expertly chosen wine pairing elevated the experience. The table service was first class from Leo, Alex and Quentin. Thank you to all the staff for an unforgettable experience. We left Edinburgh with full hearts, satisfied palates, and cherished memories.

I really do not know where to start….as a celebration of our 45th wedding anniversary, we have come to the UK for a holiday from New Zealand. This Kitchin experience has been a bucket list thing for a very long time! And it did not disappoint! From start to finish it ticket all the boxes! The meal was absolutely delicious and the wine was perfect. The wait staff were exemplary , I cannot recommend this enough. Thank you to the Kitchin team for a wonderful experience, and thank you to Tom for signing my new recipe book! I just wish I had bought both!

We went for a tasting menu with a wine pairing for one of the last seating's of the night. Overall it was really great! There were some items we liked better than others - the scallops baked in the shell with a pastry top were unreal! The wine pairings were okay, at times it felt like they were trying too hard to find a unique wine They were a bit slow to get started on the tasting menu / wine pairing. We sat down at 9:15pm and there was some confusion as three different servicers kept asking us to order a cocktail which we said we didn't want to to start with. Otherwise the service was great and people very friendly and knowledgeable. As the restaurant started to clear out the atmosphere really took a dip, the music was too quiet and you could hear conversations a few tables over and when more people left it just felt really quiet and empty.

My husband and I dined here last week during our trip. The Kitchin was suggested at my husband's conference, so we decided to check it out! Lunch was the only available reservation, so we walked from our hotel and had a leisurely lunch. We decided to do the surprise tasting, which did not disappoint! We are from America, so we wanted to be introduced to the Scottish cuisine! If you're looking for a tasting menu with a but of everything, do this tasting menu! you won't regret it! The stafff was super sweet and attentive. Very knowledgeable. Every single dish was delicious. I have attached photos of every single one of our dishes. Like I said, everything was wonderful! We had a wonderful time and would definitely come back :) highly recommend!

Best meal and restaurant experience I've ever had? Quite possibly. The flavours were a revelation, the portion-sizes perfect, the presentation charming, and all the staff were professional and knowledgeable. Yes, it's not cheap...but for a once-in-a-while treat, you can't go wrong.

Honestly I expect more from a michelin restaurant. Had a a surprise set menu was very surprising for me . Except the person serve wine FOH wasn't so nice. The dessert tasted like burned egg white felt like cod and scalop had pretty much same sauce. If I want to go back noooooooo.

We make it a point to highlight every trip with a Michelin restaurant, and this was such a great dinner. The langoustine and squid had a wonderfully soft texture, and the sauce was amazing. Every dish was truly delicious, and we enjoyed a wine pairing that was carefully selected to complement the food, making the experience even more enjoyable. We left feeling absolutely full and satisfied. We’re taking home even more wonderful memories from Edinburgh.

Wonderful wonderful evening. The tasting menu and wine pairing were fantastic. The staff were impeccable, felt like we had personalised service but never felt rushed or crowded. It was a really special evening which I will remember for a long time.

Stunning venue, immaculate service, utterly delicious food. Set lunch menu is amazing value, add the wine pairing and you'll think you've hit the jackpot! In fact, you did...

Highly underwhelming experience. It’s a good restaurant, but I’m struggling to understand how it has a Michelin star. The service was good with staff paying attention but it didn’t seem genuine and they all seemed like they were in a massive rush. There was no attempt to connect and even when the dishes were explained to us, they were explained in a rush and sometimes it was hard to understand what we were being told because of how loud the restaurant was. The atmosphere wasn’t pleasant, from the tacky decor and table setting, to some rude customers, I simply found it difficult to enjoy the experience. In terms of the food, while some dishes were indeed delicious and executed well, I failed to see a unique taste/dish. Some dishes - particularly dessert- were very disappointing. We’ve been so underwhelmed by the experience we left before we finished the dessert dishes. I can see there are many positive reviews and I struggle to understand how that’s possible. Whilst the restaurant is ok, it definitely doesn’t meet the high standards it advertises and there are plenty of fine dining restaurants in Edinburgh that offer 10x better service and food.

It's honest - so many times you a Michelin star restaurant does not live up to the hype or you go home hungry, etc. Not at the Kitchin it is truly amazing in every way. The ingredients, the preparation, the service, everything is absolutely wonderful.

I deleted my previous reviews, as I wanted to write a new one. My daughter and I visited The Kitchin again for her 30th birthday. We had the tasting menu, with paired wine package for myself. Absolute delicious from start to finish . Tom Kitchin came around tables and we had our picture taken and wished my daughter a happy birthday. Never tire of this restaurant for special occasions and fine dining. Well deserved Michelin star. Definitely back in the future.

Of all the michelin establishments we've been to in various countries, The Kitchin was the most impressive by a wide margin. The food was absolutely excellent but what was even more noteworthy was the service. The attention to detail and care that their servers display is an experience I recommend to anyone.

I traveled to Edinburgh for my birthday and planned to eat at The Kitchin for my birthday dinner. From the moment we walked in, Tom Kitchin and his team were exceptional. The restaurant is beautiful and cozy. His service team is extremely nice and so proper. I sat down and had a birthday card from Tom Kitchin wishing me Happy Birthday which was the start of an incredible meal. Then they brought over a map which tells you where all the ingredients were sourced. The five course tasting menu was amazing start to finish. During the meal, Tom Kitchin came over to say hello and took us of a tour of his kitchen. To end my experience he brought over a special lemon poppy seed cheesecake with a candle. The Kitchin was awesome!!!! Thank you to everyone at The Kitchin! Oh yeah. the scallop dish was the wow of the tasting menu! How you bak the puff pastry around the shell is wild but such a nice touch. Scallops melted in your mouth!

Was always going to be a five star experience, the food was outstanding but for me the highlight was the relaxed atmosphere. This isn't our usual style of dining and had that wee bit of imposter syndrome walking in with our voucher but the staff explained every dish, every wine selection and we were very comfortable throughout. I'd love to go back.

We went here to celebrate valentines day and ordered the "surprise tasting menu". Unfortunately, we left the restaurant with a bitter sweet feeling. On one side the experience was amazing up until the main. For the scallops and the morels we would always come back! The main was also good, but when I ate the duck ballotine, I chewed on a small piece of metal (which actually hurt a little). When asking the server about this, he said this is probably from killing the duck and this completly normal. He took the peace away from me and in the further course of the dinner there was no appology. Even if this is normal (which I find not okay for that price), at least a heads up would be welcomed that there is a rest chance of a bullet being inside the dish. Further, even though the grapefruit dessert was good and interesting, I personally did not liked the combination with the chocolate dessert afterwards. The contrast between a quite sour and bitter dessert and chocolate was not to my liking and also a somewhat heavy chocolat dessert after a lot of courses was too much. I would have preferred something lighter.

In from Tampa Bay for the week and the Kitchin was our best meal of the week and worth the price. We did the prestige surprise tasting for 205 and we were pleasantly surprised from beginning to end. The razor clams were to die for, the potato and seaweed were a unique mix of flavors and textures. We were very excited to have the woodcock, as it is pretty much impossible to find in US restaurants. All the presentations were exquisite and the wines selected by the sommelier were sublime. Every one of the staff were pleasant and helped make this a memorable experience. Seemed like a happy team to me. Tom Kitchin himself came out to greet diners which made it doubly special. Often after such a brilliant experience, dessert can be a let down and it was definitely not that here. The apple crumble souffle was just simply divine. Highly recommend the Kitchin and look forward to going back in future visits to Scotland.

Absolutely brilliant food, superb staff and an all round great experience!

Have been to the Kitchin many times over the years and always loved it. On 13/02/25 I went for the surprise tasting menu as a belated birthday celebration and cannot fault the service and food. From start to finish the service from the staff was perfect and so attentive especially the signed card from Tom and the birthday cake, which made it so special. Every dish was perfect especially the scallops which were delicious. It is expensive but I would say it 100% worth it. Beautiful meal with fabulous staff. Never feel rushed and it feels so relaxed. To top of the day was getting a picture with Tom. As always a perfect visit. My fav place to eat for fine dining.

For a Michelin star restaurant this is good value and a great draw for visitors to Leith/Edinburgh. Bravo!

My husband and I had an amazing anniversary meal with the surprise tasting menu and paired wines. The service was impeccable and the food nourished body and soul, much needed as I was recovering from an awful cold. Tom coming round to greet individual diners towards the end of the meal was a lovely touch that I have not experienced in other Michelin star restaurants across the city and made our experience all the more personal. Thanks to all the team for making our evening memorable, we look forward to dining with you again soon.

Travelled from Hertfordshire, on a food pilgrimage after following Tom for quite a few years. Had the a la carte options - sublime - everything was top notch - from the cocktail, to the complimentary amuse bouches etc. - a phenomenal success of Scottish produce and cooking. Only 1 star? Seriously - have eaten at significantly less impressive 2 star restaurants - come on Michelin honestly. It's not a cheap night out, but honestly one I won't forget - and one I am already planning a repeat for.

So, so glad my family and I were able to go to the Kitchin. Food was excellent and we all left full. Was surprised to have had the chance to meet Chef Tom Kitchin himself both before and during our dining experience (never had that happen at any of my past starred dining experiences...granted I've only done three, this being my third ;) ). Would love to go back again next time I'm in Edinburgh! Thank you for such a wonderful experience and amazing food!

What can we say...the team at The Kitchen are just out of this world. From the second you walk in the door, you get the best welcome ever....and it just gets better and better. We have been before and it was every bit as good....if not better! Every bite full was beyond words ...from the initial amuse bouche through to the cheese....cannot wait to go back. We were mostly looked after by Roni (Veronica) ...who was utterly AMAZING!!!! and Steve but everyone could not do enough for us...THANK YOU soooo much

Fantastic restaurant with a lovely atmosphere, attentive staff and tasty food. The dishes were creative and flavours were well balanced - my favourite was the mash/fried potato with caviar, simple yet absolutely delicious!

The whole experience was luxuriant from start to finish. I took my boyfriend for his christmas as he had always wanted to go. It did not disappoint. We did the tasters menu, and what a delight it was. My favourite courses were baked scallops, which was a pre starter, and the venison steak, which was the main. But honestly, every course was delicious and beautifully presented. The staff were lovely and very helpful. I would highly recommend it. Be aware it is pretty pricey but oh so worth it for a special occasion.

Everything at the Kitchin is perfect. Even a visit to the table of Tom himself to thank you and make sure everything is perfect. The only down side is the cost, the food is expensive, its always been expensive but it's now getting to the point that you think to yourself, it's just a plate of food, is it really worth that amount. On top of that, the wine pairing is just ridiculous. Did I enjoy it, yes of course I did, will I go back, absolutely, but it's getting harder to justify sending that amount on food.

We visited on 20th December and had the most wonderful meal!! The entire team work so smoothly in sync with each other and know every little detail about the menu. Sadly we had to rush out to a show but we loved every course of the prestige tasting menu - definitely worth it. Without spoiling the surprise, the main dish was one of the best of its kind we’ve had

Wonderful food and ambience. My husband is Italian and there is no food as good as his Ma's! He loved the Kitchin, high praise indeed!

Probably better to visit for dinner instead of lunch. While there were some fantastic dishes (wagyu tartar, veal/lagostim, caramel), the consistency and attention to detail didn't match the value. E.g. the mains, and a £25 cocktail should look the part (clean ice, nice glassware)

The food was great for typical food but about an average for that 'fine dining experience' that you'd expect (that I admit I have had a reasonably limited experience of). We had the prestige surprise tasting menu. I think it was around 5 plates/courses (amuse bouches etc., eat before you come ha!). We didn't receive any special attention. My fiance may have asked for some, as our birthdays are either side of this, but to be honest I don't recall, don't care and don't really like when restaurants bring out a random 'special gift' anyways. The service was generally what we would want.. I don't like overly attentive and needy servers. I did ask for the bill because we wanted to go to the cinema, it took long enough that we had to go to a later showing (20 mins from asking the first person, 5 from asking the second). There were some really loud people near us (loud laughs, looked like a commercial night out). Nothing that could've been done about that, but it's nicer when you're seated around couples who are having quieter conversations. We did go on a Saturday night. The 'Chef' came out to shake hands, which was comical and awkward (for diners, chefs are used to it). Further, service charge is applied, which has admittedly become the status quo nationwide, but, reader, please note it is applied to the entirety of your bill. We ended up paying £200 on top of our £430 food bill, which perhaps has partially highlighted our excessive frivolity or alcoholism (cheese course added on). The food price had been a gift voucher. Ethically, I think the restaurant should make purchasers aware that buying a voucher will 'socially' commit the receiver to paying a service charge. To be honest, I'd expect fine dining restaurants to pay reasonably such that service charges were not needed and that good tips could be taken from willing (🇺🇲🇨🇳) tourists. I didn't bother to take photos of all the dishes.

Simply exceptional on every level. This is a must if you love the artistry of food and wine. The vegetarian tasting menu rivaled the main tasting menu, along with non alcoholic pairings for those who don't drink wine. Highly recommend.

Whatever you do don’t go for the vegetarian option , cant believe you can have a menu like this next to the traditional tasting menu. Many of the dishes left is feeling disappointed and underwhelmed. For the price….

A sublime experience with fantastic service, knowledge of food and wine to guide your choices. The food was fresh, beautiful, tasty with the best quality ingredients. A must visit.

What a phenomenal experience! This is the second Michelin starred restaurant I've had a tasting menu at and while experiences can't be compared, it was exceptional in terms of menu and service and went above and beyond in unexpected ways. All the food is sourced from around Scotland and they present you with a map of exactly where each ingredient comes from. I went with my BIL and our SOs for a joint birthday dinner and we were greeted with a handwritten and signed card from Tom Kitchin, the owner and head chef of the restaurant. He also visited us and all other tables after our meal to check in. The wine menu is vast and the som was very knowledgeable and helpful in making a selection. The wait staff were attentive and friendly. Food was of course exceptional and I was left feeling well fed and incredibly satisfied with my dining experience. I recommend just going for the surprise menu and letting them pick the best meals for the season and ingredient availability.

My husband and I were at The Kitchin last night. We both went for the Surprise Tasting Menu. Everything was delicious and the staff were brilliant. The Reisling wine we ordered with our dinner was also fabulous. Being provided with a little furry stool for my handbag was a nice touch! Tom Kitchin himself came out of the kitchen and spoke to every table which was the cherry on the cake. We will definitely be back.

This restaurant is magnificent. Chef Kitchin has made something truly unforgettable. From the professional and friendly staff, to the delicious food and drinks, The Kitchin is an absolute must.

Absolutely wonderful. My husband and I dined here 3 weeks ago whilst holidaying. Australia is a long way from Scotland so we researched thoroughly activities, attractions and dining before we left. Kitchin did not disappoint. It was fabulous in every way. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our table appointed with crisp linen, beautiful cutlery and glassware. I even had a fluffy stool just for my handbag. Soft furnishings in restful blues and greens, comfortable padded seats, subdued lighting and woodland wallpaper made the space intimate, luxurious, stylish and welcoming. The staff were all attentive without being obtrusive, knowledgeable about both the food and wine, friendly and focused on making our meal a wonderful experience. We chose the tasting menu. How could we not with so many delicious locally sourced options making decisions impossible. I don't like raw meat but my husband loves it so we had different starters. He said the Highland Wagyu tartar with caviar was the best tartar he'd ever tasted. ( He eats tartar often). My Orkney scallops baked in the shell were tender, sweet and absolutely gorgeous. We were lucky to have grouse, a first for us and enjoyed it very much. The venison was a stand out dish. By the time dessert arrived I really could only manage a mouthful, delectable as it was. The wine paing was perfectly matched to each dish and carefully selected to suit our preferences. It was all gorgeous and we felt so well cared for, this was a very special and romantic dinner. We even got to say hello to Tom Kitchin himself. Last but not least the toilets have to get a mention. Sparkling clean, spacious (I hate when my legs are pressed against the toilet to get the door open! Not the case here) stylish ; even a botanical signature blend of soap and hand lotion. In every way guests are pampered and its worth every penny. If we ever return to Edinburgh we will definitely make a beeline to Kitchin, as you should too if you are lucky enough to live nearby!

This restaurant is pure excellence and a must visit when in Edinburgh/Leith. We visited Christmas time last year and frequently mention this place in conversation to this day. Upon arrival, the manager Steve was very helpful and made us feel at home. Our server Emil was also fantastic. The tasting menu is an amazing experience with each dish beautifully presented. Some standouts were the scallop puff pastry dish and the venison. They do such a great job highlighting what beautiful Scotland has to offer.

This restaurant is truly worthy of its Michelin star. We came here for a special dining experience during our 10 year anniversary trip, and this was the best meal of our holiday. Expect artfully plated dishes, small pallete cleansers between courses, as well as the help of a wine somalie to recommend wine pairings, and the staff's expert knowledge of all current dishes.

A day trip from Market Harborough to Edinburgh for an anniversary lunch. The food and wine selection were superb, haute cuisine at its best. The staff were helpful, especially the sommelier. A delightful meal in lovely surroundings.

This is a must do for foodies when in Edinburgh. We had their "prestige tasting" menu. Fantastic menu, and when we told the chef we had hoped for game meat, we had an extra serving of grouse. What a treat! Wine paring was ok but not spectacular ...

Everything was excellent. It is very seldom that my husband is happy after paying a big bill. This is one of the two so far where he said that he wants to go again. He has the vegetarian meal. It was a very tiring meal for us as this was dinner after a 13hrs flight + 5hrs train. We were very tired at the end of dinner. I was also a little embarrassed that we were rather casually dressed for it. I missed that part in the email confirmation. Would love to enjoy it properly again.

We were very excited and looking forward to celebrate my brother's milestone birthday. We travelled in from different countries. However we were very disappointed with the experience. The food was not bad, however we asked for lamb and we were told it was Venison meat and rhe sauce was for that meat. We had to remind the waiter that we were having lamb. We had to return the halibut, as it was slightly raw. We had requested for a small cake for my brother and that did not show up! I have been to other Michelin star restaurants and unfortunately this has been the worst experience. We received apologies however nothing else. It was a shame to spend so much on a disappointing dinner.

I have eaten at Michelin rated restaurants around the world and this is my top 3. There are no words I can use to describe the food. We elected the tasting menu with wine pairing, it was matched to absolute perfection. I will share photos as they can better reflect the experience (having no words to match the experience). The wagyu beef was one of the highlights. All of the ingredients are local to Scotland and fresh for the season. They provide a map (see in my photos) showing the location of the ingredients. Chef Kitchen came around to all of the tables and conversed. What a memorable experience. It's a bit pricey but worth it in my opinion. If you are Edinburgh please ensure this is a part of your itinerary. Thank you to staff for a lifelong memory.

Truly the best meal I have ever had. Wonderful service without being overbearing. I was a solo diner at a great table where I could watch other diners and the choreography of the staff, each with a role to play in the production of a dining experience. What to order? I highly recommend the scallop starter - butter like scallops in a beautiful sauce in a scallop shell sealed with puff pastry. For dessert I enjoyed a photo-worthy Bramble and Lime confection. Pricey! Of course. Worth it? Yes.

It was an unforgettable day when we gathered with 15 close friends to celebrate my wife's birthday on 7/9/24. The restaurant staff led us to a beautifully arranged private room where we enjoyed a delightful 5-course meal. Each dish followed the "from farm to table" concept, and the flavours were so unique that they were still etched in our memories. From the delectable first canapé to the succulent scallops, pork cheek, fish with crab, venison, and heavenly soufflé, every bite was pure perfection. The service, led by Isabel, was impeccable and added to the overall amazing experience. The wine list was truly impressive, featuring a wide selection from around the world at various price points. The knowledgeable sommelier guided us through the options, and the result was outstanding.

Truly amazing food and service. The attention to detail is incredible. Fantastic place to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

Our delayed flight didn’t even hamper our 3rd visit to The Kitchin. The welcome and Service as always was perfection, relaxed, but so attentive. Every taste and smell of each dish with the amazing wine pairing sublime. Each plate and glass described with such wonderful detail. Thank you for a wonderful lunch

Amazing retaurant with absoulutely delicious food,very intetesting food presentation,unbelievable wine list,great service,and very interesting and modern entourage. Each room is totaly different from other. Chief comes to every table to greet guests. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Amazing dining experience! We both chose the surprise tasting menus. (I had the vegetarian and my husband had the regular.). And we were pleasantly surprised! Excellent menu with excellent service…what more can you ask for!

The most wonderful experience, this is truly been the highlight of our trip to Edinburgh, we can’t wait to come again. Everything from the beautiful combination of flavours for both food and drink (the most amazing mocktails here!) to the attentive service and topped off with amazing atmosphere. Tom even comes out to greet each and every table! Best. Experience. Ever!

Genuinely I don’t sign up for this type of food hype ! However I’m blown away with this restaurant. Food was very good however the experience is beyond comprehension. Everyone and I mean everyone’s attention to detail really blew me away . From a small chair for my wife’s handbag to folding her napkin whilst away from the table . Each and every waiter really knew their job . I cannot imagine the training that went into their lives to be able to describe every morsel on the plate . Absolutely worth every penny and more . Kitchin lived up to its reputation. The food was delightful and the service was impeccable. It is expensive but it is worth it! The overall experience was outstanding! Try the Scallop appetizer for sure.

We visited on a Friday night to celebrate a birthday and cannot rate the experience highly enough. A warm welcome and drink in the beautiful bar then 7 course tasting menu was out of this world. Including scallops, pork, halibut, venison and delightful desserts. Service was amazing, so many staff available and attentive. Wine glass matches your wine choice.

Everything was fabulous and the right balance of excellent service with a relaxed but special atmosphere. All staff were lovely n most important the food was amazing!! Scallop dish was the best, ever, n souffle gorgeous.

We went last week and I was disappointed and definitely did not feel like I was dining in a Michelin star restaurant. We were presented with the drinks menu prior to food menu and asked what we wanted to drink prior to seeing the food menu. I would not know what I want to drink until I have seen what food is on the menu. The wine sommelier came over who seemed more junior for our table, not wearing a pin badge etc. in normal waiters outfit, and different to some of the other tables who opted for the pairing. The sommelier recommended a wine, which was not to our taste, when he came over and asked how was the wine I replied "ok but not great" we never saw him again for the rest of the meal. We also had to keep pouring our own wine, not that I am precious but again this did not feel special as it was to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. We felt rushed on the food front and were sat against a wall and felt like we were not looked after like most other tables. We found the food was ok however the best course was the cheese trolley which is not a great look. Overall for the experience and money really disappointing. I was going to ask to remove service but did not want my wife to feel uncomfortable on our anniversary.

All very tasty EXCEPT my escalope of pork was dry and I left most of it very disappointing given the rest of the meal and expensive

This is a must if you are in Edinburgh. This was one of the highlights of my trip in a trip filled with highlights! My husband and I did the tasting menu and it did not disappoint. The presentation and knowledge of the wait staff was out of this world. The food was the best I’ve had period! Highly recommend. The Chef even came out to greet each table. It was a great experience all the way around.

This is not a 1 star Michelin restaurant but a nice Scottish brasserie cuisine dressed up and served very well to do like a Michelin star restaurant. The food is simple, lacks any flavour complexity you expect in a Michelin star restaurant. The setting is like a dark brasserie. In the end, the price for this is just not right. The only one star level is for the service, but that s it. Very disappointed. Scottish food deserves better work. You can feel the kitchen has some techniques but the chef needs to re work hard on the complexity. I suggest they watch the French Top Chef TV series and go to One star Michelin restaurant set up by young Top Chefs to see what it a star level. Travel. Also upgrade the decoration. Hard work needed.

Having dinner here was such a special experience. Everything was great. From the moment you walk in the service is friendly yet very professional. Everyone is knowledgeable about the dishes. We decided on a 5 course tasting menu - one normal and one vegetatian. Nothing disappointed - from presentation to taste to variety. Even all the little extras sent to the table were excellent. I highly recommend coming for a special occasion.

Thanks to Tom and his team for a wonderful meal and a wonderful afternoon. In my opinion, the Michelin people are a bit stingy awarding only one star. Definitely worth more.

We had really high expectations. The quality of the basic products was really great, as was the cooking. Unfortunately the menu is really old fashioned. Not a single course had even the slightest bit of wow factor. Everything solid but boring. I really expect more from a Michelin restaurant. The service staff was very friendly but the service itself was like an assembly line and just quick, quick, quick, whipped through. I had the feeling all evening that The Kitchin was once really great, but that must have been years ago. Too bad. That's complaining at a high level, but for €630 for 2 people I expect more.

My surprise menu had two stand-outs, the amuse bouche (probably the best pea velouté I ever had thanks to some secret twist I couldn't figure out) and the pork cheek with chanterelles. I also loved the non-alcoholic beverage pairing (it isn't advertised on the menu but when I asked for it, I got offered a surprise pairing that included two clever mocktails, a zero alcohol beer, and alcohol-free wines). Sadly, the other dishes struck me as an alteration of blandness (the minimalistically steamed vegetables of the starter and the fillet of lamb were particularly bland) and saltiness (including the buttery sauce accompanying said veggies and the ragout of lamb shoulder). Nothing was bad - it just disappointingly lacked both flavour and surprise (a piece of grilled fish or meat next to a couple of pieces of vegetable isn't exactly a novelty, even pub food can be more creative and playful). I actually enjoyed most of my meals in non-starred restaurants in Edinburgh more than my meal here, let alone the otherworldly experience I had at Timberyard which on the surface has a similar focus on Scottish produce yet takes it to an altogether different level (at a better price point). The problem is that The Kitchin also is really expensive, so value for money just isn't there. It is also a very large restaurant, service therefore felt very rushed, and even though the staff was all very professional and hard working, it appeared almost inevitable that there was a mixup leading to me receiving one beverage pairing only when my plate was almost eaten empty. And when staff did ask how I enjoyed my food, it felt like a formality without any space for elaborating on feedback (and regardless whether I called the food fantastic or coolly just "OK", I didn't receive any follow-up) - in other words, they were all formally friendly and polite but deep inside, I felt the staff was stressed and unhappy and thus there was no warmth or service coming from the heart - which isn't surprising given the troubling noise about a toxic workplace that had emerged a few years ago. All in all I therefore had an uninspiring experience and would not feel any temptation to come back.

Surprise tasting menu and paired wine was excellent except for one Chilean wine that the sommelier did say would be 'challenging'
