Ate here some years ago & thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience. However.-and they say never go back.-this time it was a massive disappointment. I went with 3 Foodie friends, we chose the tasting menu. I’m afraid that not one of the courses was Michelin standard-in our opinion. It all felt a bit ‘convey belt’. The same with the service, the staff seemed busy but uninterested in our feedback and on more than one occasion walked away as we started speaking to them! Oddly enough, the restaurant was full! shows you the power of TV and a few books. I rarely give reviews and even rarer bad reviews, but, this was so bad,i felt compelled.

A premium mediocre experience at a business facility, not a Michelin restaurant. We were visiting Edinburgh for the bank holiday and were excited to have a culinary experience at a Michelin, something we like to do when we go to a new place. Kitchin has a rating of 4.8 (1.9k reviews), so we booked it. What a mistake. We arrived at the restaurant and the first thing we noticed is how loud and BIG the restaurant was. We sat down and saw the ugly grey placemats, something you see in diners (or not anywhere really?), which definitely did not give us the table experience we were looking for. So I removed mine. The head chef (bless him), came over to the table said hello and asked us how the dinner was going, before we had even had the chance to taste any of the meals. We had picked the “Prestige” menu. We started off with small complements from the chef, which were anything but exciting. Very bland and dry, missing any creativity whatsoever, a common theme throughout the evening. The ingredients were premium: scallop and caviar (check, check), langoustine (check), Wagyu (check), but that is NOT enough to make a dish a Michelin star experience, when the plating and the rest of the ingredients lack imagination, you just receive a premium mediocre experience. The leaves and salad bits accompanying the dishes were mostly all WILTED, to say the least disappointing. The fish dish was overcooked and dry, same goes for the langoustine… which is just ridiculous considering that’s the main element of the dish. The sauces were a hit and miss, a couldn’t even save the dishes. Overall it felt like the place was trying to get away with the price by putting fancy ingredients on the menu (£550, normal wine pairing for 2) as he dinner felt more like a conveyor belt of disappointment. It is a business, not a restaurant. Very sad as we were truly excited by the reputation of the restaurant, which from the most recent reviews is clearly slipping. I also want to point out how nice our sommelier Quentin was. He was very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about his craft. He had picked out some great wine pairings and we really appreciate that, the only reason I’m putting 2 starts for the service.

Two adults. £500 (£250 each). For the price, the food was quite unimaginative and the wines (we had the pairings) nothing at all special. At a Mitchelin Starred restaurant, you would normally receive service from knowledgeable sommeliers but it was incredibly clear that the young sommelier had simply learned some blurb from a flash card. We asked a couple of basic questions and he clearly didn’t even understand the question. Rather than say, “I don’t know”, he just bullsh*tted out an answer, which was rather annoying. Turns out he didn’t even have the most basic level of wine training, such as WSET. The food was good, but not at all worth the price tag. Furthermore, there was no ‘theatre’ around any of the dishes. None whatsoever. Regarding service, on two occasions the server took our plates from the same side as one of us (i.e. didn’t walk around). The atmosphere of the whole evening felt quite rushed. Finally, we were presented with the wrong bill (in excess of £950), which we pointed out wasn’t our bill. In summary, the restaurant is absolutely not of Michelin Star quality. It feels like they are mass producing dishes and focusing on short term profit at the expense of longer term success. Disappointed.

Amazing experience over at the Kitchin. The food was great and the service was prompt. The Kitchin showcased how locally sourced all their ingredients were from a map - it was very cool. A real highlight was us was the cocktail! It was so delicious and balanced in alcohol level that you were forced to nurse and savour its tastiness. For a Wednesday night it was absolutely packed but seating for two people were arranged to make it feel intimate. Take note, all tables are relatively close together so it won't be a quiet dining experience. Will be back again!

Food was excellent and the service was impeccable. If I had to find a minor fault it would be the choice of desserts on the set menu. I would've liked a chocolate based dessert that wasn't white chocolate. Was still one of the best meals we've had though.

We did the “The Prestige Surprise Tasting Menu” We had two drinks and 3 bottles of sparkling water. The gin and tonic was a basic drink with Hendricks gin and fever Tree tonic. We kind of wished it was an in house tonic. I ordered the “Smoke” which I felt was outstanding. Be prepared for full dinner. We got there at 6pm and we left at 9:45pm. The five course meal is 5 main courses and about 4 mini courses. In the spirit of the restaurant all I will say it lives up to its Michelin rating. We did ad the cheese plate at the end which ended the night well. My only very small complaint was we felt it took a long time to get our check. It could just be we are impatient Americans. Over all if you are looking for a higher end Scottish meal I would recommend this to anyone visiting Edinburgh.

I was there as I was visiting Edinburgh. Experience was good but the issue was the safety. One of my appetizers had a metal piece in it. It was a pretty scary experience. It was a disappointment for us.Ambience was above average, service was average. As a Michelin starred restaurant, I had read that it would be one of the top three on the island, but it definitely doesn't deserve it.I don't remember any special taste in all the dishes except fish, I have tasted much more delicious menus in many ordinary restaurants. The salt content was high, the potato ball, bread and butter were ordinary. I found the prices high for this quality of food. Although the vast majority of googled reviews are close to perfect, I try to be objective and say that it is unfortunately not a restaurant that deserves these praises and money in terms of taste, ambiance and service.

We booked this restaurant for Easter dinner while we visited Edynburg. The food was ok but not as good as would be expected, but the service was far too bad for a Michelin star restaurant . We ordered champagne and got it in the wine glasses as apparently the waiter said , they run out of champagne glasses ! So many mistakes with the right cutlery, serving us a dishes belongings to the next table etc . After dining in Michelin star restaurant paying a bill (not small amount) you expect the staff to say “ Bye , thank you ! , unfortunately we left the restaurant unnoticed. Lots of mistake which shouldn’t be made in that kind of restaurant. We won’t recommend it to anyone else

Feel blessed to have finally come to the mother ship after dining at Tom’s other two spectacular restaurants in Edinburgh. Our experience will be one that will live long in our memories. Starting from a very warm welcome on a rainy Leith day, the whole team were wonderful from start to finish. We decided to go for the 7 course surprise tasting menu & wine pairing. Not to spoil the surprise too much, I can say that each dish, sourcing Scottish ingredients, took us to another level. Highlights are hard to give as the entire meal was incredible however, the scallops, the pork cheeks, the halibut - wow! Was really nice to see Tom at the end of our meal for a chat - what a gem this place is, what a treat - come try it soon, you will be happy you did.

After many years the revitalised "Rockpool" is again a wonderful starter tasting of a shellfish selection in a pool of shellfish consomme. It is worth a visit for this alone. The Kitchin cooking continues to be the epitome of extracting the optimum taste from many of the less popular ingredients and the current menus have two which we tried. I love the Hogget. I think of it as lamb with attitude. The beauty of lamb with the enhanced flavours of the older animal. My wife ordered the Beef Shin. Often it is viewed as a brilliant flavour but only suitable for Beef consomme. Here all the rich taste of the beef is preserved whilst it is presented with a delicate texture. Both Mains are fine examples of creating fine dining courses from less known ingredients. There are no requirements here for the overwhelming sauces which so often emasculate the principal componet of many dishes elsewhere. All supported by a continuing excellence of service in a friendly, amusing and fun way.

I used to eat here regularly 10 years ago. I came back for lunch (I don’t live in Leith anymore, so this was a treat when I came back for a few days) and was bowled over. Not by the food. The food is still good, like it was. But 10 years ago I used to eat for £28 for a 3 course lunch. Now it’s more than double that, for the exact same food. And it’s not ‘inflation’ because the same meal ten years ago, adjusted for inflation, would cost £37. Its Michelin establishments like this clubbing together and jacking their margins. It stinks, and I won’t eat here (or at another Michelin star eatery) again. There’s plenty of places that aren’t in Michelin that do much better value lunches.

Unfortunately do not recommend. The restaurant is very large and appears relatively classy, but the attitude of the staff markedly detracts from this. We went as a young couple. We could afford to pay for it, but had saved up, expecting it to be an incredible experience. It was incredible, but for the wrong reasons. The staff were very cold and seemed quite unwelcoming. We were told our choice of wine wasn't correct for the food. The food itself was pretty terrible. Would not recommend. Try Martin Wishart - that was incredible!

We wanted to love this restaurant, my husband and I visited with a voucher my mum had bought us, as she was a huge Tom Kitchin fan and adored her visit here. Unfortunately, from almost the outset, I felt like I was in the childhood story, "The Emperor's new clothes". Whether it was due to a quiet Tuesday 2pm lunch seating, the fact we are both vegetarian or that our hopes were high although our expectations weren't, the experience was among the poorest of us eating out. We have never eaten in a Michelin starred restaurant and indeed are often disappointed by vegetarian offerings compared to our creations at home that to eat out isn't common for us and perhaps we cannot offer the opinion and insight of others reviews of The Kitchin. But at the least we expect well seasoned, tasty food anywhere and here we were expecting to discover new techniques, innovative flavours and perfect presentation. None of this happened, the menu seemed tired, uninspired and bored, couldn't feel or taste any passion for cooking, even the descriptions given by the waiting staff were delivered as if rehearsed and monotone, perhaps they were embarrassed. The bread made elsewhere was good and the wine enjoyable, although having been lucky enough to stay in Valpolicella area last year, we had tasted and bought very similar quality wine from a winemaker, for around 15 euros so the markup to seventy pounds seemed steep. Even with the staff, we didn't get the buzz that others have experienced and felt that once we failed to deliver on effusive praise they lost interest or again due to the partially filled dining room and the evening service looming they were just ready for a break. When I was unable to eat my main as it was oversalted, they did whisk it away and had it remade, but too soon for me to explain that it was the ricotta filling, not the butter dressing, I felt as if there was a judgement on me rather than an interest in how the dish could be improved. Overall, our experience was flat and increasingly disappointing so that by the end we were quite annoyed and irritated and that was before the £210 bill.

The set up of the tables meant that background noise was at a reasonable level for a busy restaurant and not distracting at all allowing easy conversation. The food was outstanding and the wine pairing matched perfectly by our sommelier who was very knowledgeable about all the wines. Our server, Aidan was very attentive and knowledgeable making us feel at ease and valued. Weve dined here several times over the years and its either excellent or very average and on this occasion it was sadly the latter. The canape was really odd - it was a large ball of what felt like cold mashed potato, the onion and cheese topping didnt really come through - an unpleasant mouthful, also quite big which probably didnt help. The beetroot to follow was okay but just pickled beetroot in beetroot juice, simple but hard to eat. Starters - we had an issue with the scallops being under / raw which to be fair they dealt with quickly and fairly, the sweetbreads and langoustine were very good. Mains of Lamb and venison were tasty but nothing out the ordinary, some parts of the dishes were cold - the venison rump and the aubergine which just showed a lack of attention to detail. The rhubarb pre desert was probably the tastiest dish of the night as the deserts were espresso mouse which sounded great but only had the faintest taste of coffee, the doughnuts were the best thing on that one and the souffle had a scrambled egg consistency and was a disappointment. Hard to really pick out something which was great or memorable, even the Buckthorn cocktail was bland and didnt taste of having any alcohol in it. Lots of staff running around, lots of decanting sauces at the table, carving the lamb at the table for show but it all felt a bit style over substance. Over all a bit of a let down.

Had an incredible experience at The Kitchin! We opted for the set lunch menu which was sensational but I really want to go back and try their other menus because everything was incredible. My favorite part of the restaurant was that everything was from produced in Scotland and they even give you a map to show where they get it all from which was a nice touch. Outside of that fantastic service and great experience.

Absolutely outstanding in every way. Wonderful service and welcome and the food and presentation was breathtaking. Having Tom Kitchin himself say hello was an extra special touch. Extraordinarily good value. We will definitely return.

Incredible. An unforgettable meal that truly showcased premier local ingredients, creative dishes with genuine surprise, exceptional service and knowledgeable staff. Book ahead. My table overlooked the chef’s team in the kitchen; I watched the excitement all night and loved it!

This is a smart restaurant, serving fabulous food with an atmosphere that is reasonably formal but not at all stuffy. We thought that the food was as good as any we have tasted in similar establishments - and in a couple of instances blew us...

The Kitchin is pure excellence! Their tasting menu featured a great variety of amazing dishes, with our favorites being the Scallop puff pastry and their Venison! Our staff were not only very helpful, but very informative and charismatic, especially the manager Steve and our server Emil. That being said, these led to The Kitchin becoming my favorite spot in Edinburgh.

Dishes are overall not too imaginative, but at The Kitchin you continue to find remarkably consistent solid cooking and top ingredients. Frankly, it's no longer either exciting or good value as it used to be (I started going, as a regular customer, almost 15 years ago), but for visitors to Edinburgh interested in Scottish produce cooked at high level, or for locals who want to splurge out on simply good refined cooking, it certainly remains a very valid, albeit expensive, option.

Service top notch. Food expertly done - although dessert didn't quite match the earthiness of the (perfect) main courses. Sommelier paired the courses to perfection, and overall presentation could not be faulted. Will happily book a return visit.

Had lunch. So good. Tom came out to speak to customers, cool touch but he looked absolutely shattered 😢. Staff were amazing and chatty. Can't fault anytbing. Would I return? Yessss would I recommend yessss. It is a higher price point but taking into consideration quality of Local resourced food, wages ( standard of staff) . Well done.

Was picking up guests for a taxi transfer and was not allowed to use the toilet. Did not expect the answer I was given. I thought it was against the law in Scotland to refuse anyone to use the toilet..

Best scallops and pork cheeks I have ever had. Overall delicious and would definitely recommend. Only one point for improvement: our reservation was at 9pm and towards the last 3 courses of our dinner you could tell that the staff is ready to go home and became less attentive (e.g., we were pouring wine and water on our own). However, i would definitely go again and recommend it to everyone since it’s great experience!

They have a nice bar too, with a good selection of whiskies (as you would imagine). One of the best meals we have ever had.

Great experience we had at lunch when we visited a few weeks ago. Table situated with view of the kitchen, Tom Kitchin was working and came out and went round each table speaking to all his guests which was lovely. Food was phenomenal as you would expect, our whole experience from start to finish exceeded our expectations and we have booked to visit again. Definitely worth a visit if you have a special occasion to celebrate
