What a phenomenal experience! This is the second Michelin starred restaurant I've had a tasting menu at and while experiences can't be compared, it was exceptional in terms of menu and service and went above and beyond in unexpected ways. All the food is sourced from around Scotland and they present you with a map of exactly where each ingredient comes from. I went with my BIL and our SOs for a joint birthday dinner and we were greeted with a handwritten and signed card from Tom Kitchin, the owner and head chef of the restaurant. He also visited us and all other tables after our meal to check in. The wine menu is vast and the som was very knowledgeable and helpful in making a selection. The wait staff were attentive and friendly. Food was of course exceptional and I was left feeling well fed and incredibly satisfied with my dining experience. I recommend just going for the surprise menu and letting them pick the best meals for the season and ingredient availability.

My husband and I were at The Kitchin last night. We both went for the Surprise Tasting Menu. Everything was delicious and the staff were brilliant. The Reisling wine we ordered with our dinner was also fabulous. Being provided with a little furry stool for my handbag was a nice touch! Tom Kitchin himself came out of the kitchen and spoke to every table which was the cherry on the cake. We will definitely be back.

Absolutely wonderful. My husband and I dined here 3 weeks ago whilst holidaying. Australia is a long way from Scotland so we researched thoroughly activities, attractions and dining before we left. Kitchin did not disappoint. It was fabulous in every way. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our table appointed with crisp linen, beautiful cutlery and glassware. I even had a fluffy stool just for my handbag. Soft furnishings in restful blues and greens, comfortable padded seats, subdued lighting and woodland wallpaper made the space intimate, luxurious, stylish and welcoming. The staff were all attentive without being obtrusive, knowledgeable about both the food and wine, friendly and focused on making our meal a wonderful experience. We chose the tasting menu. How could we not with so many delicious locally sourced options making decisions impossible. I don't like raw meat but my husband loves it so we had different starters. He said the Highland Wagyu tartar with caviar was the best tartar he'd ever tasted. ( He eats tartar often). My Orkney scallops baked in the shell were tender, sweet and absolutely gorgeous. We were lucky to have grouse, a first for us and enjoyed it very much. The venison was a stand out dish. By the time dessert arrived I really could only manage a mouthful, delectable as it was. The wine paing was perfectly matched to each dish and carefully selected to suit our preferences. It was all gorgeous and we felt so well cared for, this was a very special and romantic dinner. We even got to say hello to Tom Kitchin himself. Last but not least the toilets have to get a mention. Sparkling clean, spacious (I hate when my legs are pressed against the toilet to get the door open! Not the case here) stylish ; even a botanical signature blend of soap and hand lotion. In every way guests are pampered and its worth every penny. If we ever return to Edinburgh we will definitely make a beeline to Kitchin, as you should too if you are lucky enough to live nearby!

This restaurant is pure excellence and a must visit when in Edinburgh/Leith. We visited Christmas time last year and frequently mention this place in conversation to this day. Upon arrival, the manager Steve was very helpful and made us feel at home. Our server Emil was also fantastic. The tasting menu is an amazing experience with each dish beautifully presented. Some standouts were the scallop puff pastry dish and the venison. They do such a great job highlighting what beautiful Scotland has to offer.

Everything was excellent. It is very seldom that my husband is happy after paying a big bill. This is one of the two so far where he said that he wants to go again. He has the vegetarian meal. It was a very tiring meal for us as this was dinner after a 13hrs flight + 5hrs train. We were very tired at the end of dinner. I was also a little embarrassed that we were rather casually dressed for it. I missed that part in the email confirmation. Would love to enjoy it properly again.

We were very excited and looking forward to celebrate my brother's milestone birthday. We travelled in from different countries. However we were very disappointed with the experience. The food was not bad, however we asked for lamb and we were told it was Venison meat and rhe sauce was for that meat. We had to remind the waiter that we were having lamb. We had to return the halibut, as it was slightly raw. We had requested for a small cake for my brother and that did not show up! I have been to other Michelin star restaurants and unfortunately this has been the worst experience. We received apologies however nothing else. I have eaten at Michelin rated restaurants around the world and this is my top 3. There are no words I can use to describe the food. We elected the tasting menu with wine pairing, it was matched to absolute perfection. I will share photos as they can better reflect the experience (having no words to match the experience). The wagyu beef was one of the highlights. All of the ingredients are local to Scotland and fresh for the season. They provide a map (see in my photos) showing the location of the ingredients. Chef Kitchen came around to all of the tables and conversed. What a memorable experience. It's a bit pricey but worth it in my opinion. We went last week and I was disappointed and definitely did not feel like I was dining in a Michelin star restaurant. We were presented with the drinks menu prior to food menu and asked what we wanted to drink prior to seeing the food menu. I would not know what I want to drink until I have seen what food is on the menu. The wine sommelier came over who seemed more junior for our table, not wearing a pin badge etc. in normal waiters outfit, and different to some of the other tables who opted for the pairing. The sommelier recommended a wine, which was not to our taste, when he came over and asked how was the wine I replied "ok but not great" we never saw him again for the rest of the meal. We also had to keep pouring our own wine, not that I am precious but again this did not feel special as it was to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. We felt rushed on the food front and were sat against a wall and felt like we were not looked after like most other tables. We found the food was ok however the best course was the cheese trolley which is not a great look. Overall for the experience and money really disappointing. I was going to ask to remove service but did not want my wife to feel uncomfortable on our anniversary.

This is not a 1 star Michelin restaurant but a nice Scottish brasserie cuisine dressed up and served very well to do like a Michelin star restaurant. The food is simple, lacks any flavour complexity you expect in a Michelin star restaurant. The setting is like a dark brasserie. In the end, the price for this is just not right. The only one star level is for the service, but that s it. Very disappointed. Scottish food deserves better work. You can feel the kitchen has some techniques but the chef needs to re work hard on the complexity. I suggest they watch the French Top Chef TV series and go to One star Michelin restaurant set up by young Top Chefs to see what it a star level. Travel. Also upgrade the decoration. Hard work needed.

We had really high expectations. The quality of the basic products was really great, as was the cooking. Unfortunately the menu is really old fashioned. Not a single course had even the slightest bit of wow factor. Everything solid but boring. I really expect more from a Michelin restaurant. The service staff was very friendly but the service itself was like an assembly line and just quick, quick, quick, whipped through. I had the feeling all evening that The Kitchin was once really great, but that must have been years ago. Too bad. That's complaining at a high level, but for €630 for 2 people I expect more.

My surprise menu had two stand-outs, the amuse bouche (probably the best pea velouté I ever had thanks to some secret twist I couldn't figure out) and the pork cheek with chanterelles. I also loved the non-alcoholic beverage pairing (it isn't advertised on the menu but when I asked for it, I got offered a surprise pairing that included two clever mocktails, a zero alcohol beer, and alcohol-free wines). Sadly, the other dishes struck me as an alteration of blandness (the minimalistically steamed vegetables of the starter and the fillet of lamb were particularly bland) and saltiness (including the buttery sauce accompanying said veggies and the ragout of lamb shoulder). Nothing was bad - it just disappointingly lacked both flavour and surprise (a piece of grilled fish or meat next to a couple of pieces of vegetable isn't exactly a novelty, even pub food can be more creative and playful). I actually enjoyed most of my meals in non-starred restaurants in Edinburgh more than my meal here, let alone the otherworldly experience I had at Timberyard which on the surface has a similar focus on Scottish produce yet takes it to an altogether different level (at a better price point). The problem is that The Kitchin also is really expensive, so value for money just isn't there. It is also a very large restaurant, service therefore felt very rushed, and even though the staff was all very professional and hard working, it appeared almost inevitable that there was a mixup leading to me receiving one beverage pairing only when my plate was almost eaten empty. And when staff did ask how I enjoyed my food, it felt like a formality without any space for elaborating on feedback (and regardless whether I called the food fantastic or coolly just "OK", I didn't receive any follow-up) - in other words, they were all formally friendly and polite but deep inside, I felt the staff was stressed and unhappy and thus there was no warmth or service coming from the heart - which isn't surprising given the troubling noise about a toxic workplace that had emerged a few years ago. All in all I therefore had an uninspiring experience and would not feel any temptation to come back.

The Kitchin Restaurant in Edinburgh - a feast for the taste 🍾 As a traveler who loves food, I will definitely visit The Kitchin restaurant every time I come to Edinburgh. This restaurant is located in the center of Edinburgh, hidden in a quiet alley, giving people a sense of secluded luxury and calm. The Kitchin restaurant was co-founded by chef Tom Cage and his wife Karen, who are committed to presenting the most authentic Scottish flavor to the world on the table. Here, every dish uses the freshest local ingredients, perfectly blending tradition and innovation, making it endlessly memorable. When I walked into the restaurant, I was attracted by the dining environment in front of me - warm and soft lighting, simple and elegant decoration, creating a peaceful and leisurely atmosphere. The open kitchen next to it made me feel the professionalism and enthusiasm of the chef team. Every move they made seemed to be playing a carefully planned symphony. The menu at The Kitchin restaurant all reflects Chef Cage’s pious pursuit of cooking. From appetizers to main dishes, every dish surprised me. The Kitchin restaurant not only provides delicious dishes, but also showcases the unique charm of Scottish food culture. When dining here, you can not only taste the authentic Scottish flavor, but also feel the chef's respect for the ingredients and his pious pursuit of food. This restaurant is undoubtedly an unmissable highlight of your Edinburgh food tour.

The maître de was a very rude man indeed. Really spoilt the night. He strutted about in a pompous manner, talking down to staff and pointing at tables. He twice took things off our table without asking and when my wife asked him not to do it his response was disgusting. I quite enjoyed the pea velouté but everything else was way below average even for a mediocre restaurant. Final course - a soufflé! My mum is a master at these and so I know good ones. My wife was so excited to visit this restaurant. She saw The Kitchen on Remarkable Places To Eat. Everything was fabulous. The food was excellent, the staff was very attentive and there when you needed them. It was a bit expensive, probably the most expensive meal WV had in the 2 weeks we were in Ireland and Scotland, but it was fine dining, so this was expected. I gave 4 stars on service because I originally ordered a Gin and Tonic and I specifically asked for lemon instead of lime. After I started drinking, I realized there was lime instead of lemon.. no big deal. When the person that took the drink order returned and asked about the drinks, I mentioned the mistake. I told him no worries, but he insisted on changing the drink, which he did. He did not bring any Tonic and had to use sparkling water. After I had 2 sips, I was touching the rim of the glass and noticed it was chipped and very sharp. I pounted this to my wife, and she said to be careful. Not wanting to be a complainer, I just turned the glass around and kept drinking. Never got the Tonic, and the gentleman never came back to the table. I should mention that the chef did come around visiting the tables, so my wife was excited to meet him. We told him we were celebrating our 40th anniversary. No free desert or glass of anything. For me, this was a one and done experience. There's no need for me to go back.

Amazing restaurant - most likely the best meal we will have eaten this year! We did the surprise tasting menu and it did not disappoint: nice combination of meats and fishes. If you give them a heads up on any allergies or foods you do not like at the start, the chef will take your tastes into consideration… for example, both my wife and I enjoyed a course prepared two different ways to take into account the fact that I dislike mushrooms. Ambience was perfect. I will say the cocktails felt a little small compared to what I’m used to but I’m sure that more on me than on the restaurant. Also I would recommend setting aside 3-4 hours if you plan on doing the tasting menu. Highly recommend! An experience in itself that is not to be missed!

Tonight we dined at "The Kitchin" in Edinburgh, drawn by its Michelin star reputation. Opting for the a la carte menu, we were thoroughly impressed by the quality of the food—every dish was exceptional. However, there were a few issues that detracted from our experience. While the staff was friendly and pleasant, the service was notably slow. It took over 30 minutes to clear our plates and bring our desserts, and no attention was given to our empty glasses during this period - not really what we’ve come to expect from Michelin star restaurants. Additionally, our dining experience was disrupted by a nearby couple who spoke loudly on the phone and watched a football match (their phone propped up on the table). This diminished the overall ambiance, and it was surprising that the staff did not address this. We also felt somewhat neglected compared to the more demanding table next to us, which received frequent attention. This made us wonder if our casual attire or our age played a role in the differential treatment. The final bill came to 340 EUR, which included a service charge. However, during payment we were prompted for a tip, a first for us in Edinburgh. This left us with a slightly negative impression. Overall, while the food at "The Kitchin" was outstanding, the service and ambiance issues were a bit disappointing.

The Kitchin, nestled in the heart of Edinburgh, offers a dining experience that truly captures the essence of Scottish cuisine. On my first visit, I was immediately struck by the warm, welcoming atmosphere. The staff's friendliness made me feel like a long-time regular, setting the tone for an exceptional afternoon. Opting for the prestigious tasting menu with an additional cheese course, I embarked on a three-hour culinary journey. The kitchen's commitment to sourcing produce from various regions of the UK was evident in every dish. Each plate showcased the top-quality ingredients, skillfully prepared to highlight their natural flavors. While the presentation may lack the ornate aesthetics often associated with French cuisine, the flavors more than compensated. The chefs' expertise shone through in their ability to coax out the best from each ingredient, proving that substance can indeed triumph over style. The tasting menu was a well-orchestrated symphony of tastes, demonstrating both the diversity of British produce and the kitchen's technical prowess. From start to finish, each course reaffirmed The Kitchin's reputation as a standard-bearer for modern Scottish cuisine. Though my first visit, it certainly won't be my last. The Kitchin has earned its place on my must-visit list for future trips to Edinburgh. For those seeking a true taste of Scotland, expertly prepared and served with genuine hospitality, The Kitchin is an experience not to be missed.

Amazing food with professional unstuffy service in a relaxed setting. Thanks to all concerned. (We have eaten in two and three star Michelin restaurants which were not as satisfying.)

TL;DR: Had the set lunch menu. Food was delicious. The classic French onion soup paired with bone marrow was the highlight of the day for me. I’m not usually huge on bone marrow, but figured I’d give this one a try as it might’ve been well made, and I’m glad I did. Had the duck confit as main. It was great, but I think the dish could use a bit more freshness, maybe by giving the greens more taste. Dessert was ok. The lemon soufflé filling tasted slightly eggy, but beautifully soft and light. Overall great experience for a reasonable price! Service was great too, and I particularly liked to learn where each of the very locally sourced ingredients came from. Tom came to the table to check on us, an extra touch of nice.

Wonderful dining experience. Service was attentive. We ordered from the a la carte menu, which included 3 courses. Dishes were prepared in interesting ways and were quite flavorful. The beef tartar is one example, as well as the John Dory. Request a table in the main dining room and not the small room on the right side as you enter.

Truly, truly an amazing dining experience at The Kitchn… I loved the creativity and use of ingredients at every point of the tasting menu. Each course was well-balanced, meats and seafood dishes were tender, and desserts were rich but not cloyingly sweet. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the three hours I spent there, and Tom Kitchn even made his way out to greet all the guests. I really tasted the uniqueness and attention to the smallest of details in each dish prepared, and that is what makes this place stand out. I would highly recommend this spot to anyone traveling to Scotland looking for a fine dining experience!

I don't care what scandals this restaurant has had in the past. I really admire any chef you've ever seen come out and shake hands with diners. This restaurant is definitely in the top 5 in my mind. I have tasted 30+ Michelin restaurants, including three stars.

This was one of the most amazing dining experiences I have ever had. We opted for the surprise tasting with the cheese course and wine pairing. Everything from the friendliness of the staff to the quality of the food was unmatched. We spent over three hours at the restaurant and appreciate the pace of which the night moved. I look forward to a return visit.

This was our first Michelin experience for our first wedding anniversary. Been looking forward to it for months. The food was exceptional as expected. So were cocktails and wine paring. The staff were lovely and attentive and we had and amazing time while there. Value for money too. However, I have to give only 4 out of 5 stars. This is because we were charged £90 for not turning up. My wife noticed this in the taxi after we left. She called the restaurant to make sure this wasn’t the case and only a mistake as we were clearly there. But, the money came out the account. My wife emailed them. They acknowledged there was another table booked in a different name but with our contact details etc and we would get our money back in 5-10 days as a “Gesture of goodwill on this occasion”. That statement seemed a bit snippy to me like it was our fault. Took a bit of the shine off the whole experience to be honest. I would still recommend as everything except this was great and hopefully this was just a one off error.

Seems I forgot to do a review! We visited in 2022 for my husbands 30th birthday! It was a very late decision the day we were due to fly back home and managed to sneak a last minute reservation at lunch! We are so glad we went! The food was exceptional! Having a map to tell you where all the ingredients come from I loved. I love being able to identify where the produces journey began and at The Kitchin it's not very far! It was a lovely touch to have Chef Tom serve us one of our courses! The staff were all lovely and couldn't do enough we enjoyed the aesthetics of the restaurant it suited the dark moody day that Leith happened to be then but it made everything feel that more cosy and homely! It also seems I may have a thing for truffle!

A let down. Did the set lunch menu and subbed in the cheese course instead of dessert for extra £££ (and that kind of ruined the experience for me...). The food was good. If it hadn't of been for some disappointing elements in the service and experience then I would have left with a better opinion, but enjoyed the food...maybe the main was a little boring. Service felt very stale and impersonal. Main issue was with the cheese course, which again, I paid extra for. Server asked if there was anything I was interested in/would want to avoid. I pointed out a goat cheese that was shaped similar to a valençay that I said I was interested in, and said I'd prefer not to have a blue cheese. I was then served a chalky goat's cheese, a brie and a flipping stilton. Whatever I had said was either not listened to, or completely disregarded as if I was going to get the 3 cheeses I was served regardless of what I actually wanted. Also the "cheese enhancers" were specifically paired with the cheeses, and didn't particularly add anything since it seemed like the same three would be served no matter which cheese you were arbitrarily served.

Every single dish was excellent. There are also some extravagant wines, for example from Romania or Lebanon. It was a great experience with very courteous service. The only tiny flaw is the noise, as there are quite a few tables in a relatively small space... but that doesn't change the overall rating of 5 stars.

Wow, what an experience!! First I want to say that my husband and I have been traveling throughout Ireland and Scotland for the past week, so I had nothing but jeans and a sweatshirt to wear to this Michelin star restaurant. Which I was super embarrassed about. BUT the staff treated us SO well and paid no attention to that. They were so polite, engaging, and attentive. We did the surprise fixed menu and it was so fun. It was exciting to see each meal, which were displayed with perfection. We loved everything we ate. There was not a bad meal. This was a once in a life time experience that I would recommend to anyone!

Dining at this superior Michelin star restaurant was exquisite. The sommelier, Huan, was knowledgeable, and very friendly; Fabio and Karalina were outstanding with food delivery and providing extra service. A truly five-star experience at The Kitchin. A friend of mine and I decided to try their tasting menu for lunch and they accommodated my wish without problem (no bird). The food was delicious, the service impeccable, through and through. The sommelier also recommended the best wine for me. Superb

I had just flown into Edinburgh right before my reservation, and my luggage was left behind, so I had about 10-20 minutes until the shops closed and had to quickly purchase something to wear. My trip was starting off bad, but The Kitchin quickly changed that. Everyone was so welcoming and pleasant! I was a female dining alone, and It was still great! I ordered the halibut as my main course and everything was so fresh! I do wish it had a little more salt and a bit more sauce. Overall, I had a great experience! Hopefully, I can make it back someday and try some other options from the menu!

We were traveling and had a stop in Edinburgh and wanted to try The Kitchin. We opted for the surprise tasting menu. It is pretty pricey compared to other tasting menus we’ve had in the past . The restaurant has a lively atmosphere with a noise level medium to high during peak hours . The food was presented well , all the dishes tasted fresh had good flavors. As for service , the staff was friendly and courteous. We had a 6 pm reservation and our meal ended at 9:15 pm . As more and more customers came in , the service became slower , and times between the dishes took longer (around 40-45 mins between the last few courses ) . For a 5 course meal with a few more small bites sprinkled in , this was way too long . We didn’t enjoy the food as much towards the end of the meal as it was taking too long. The service seemed hectic, sent another table’s dish to our table before quickly taking it away . Food is good , a bit pricey allocate sufficient time or let the staff know if you have other plans.

A premium mediocre experience at a business facility, not a Michelin restaurant. We were visiting Edinburgh for the bank holiday and were excited to have a culinary experience at a Michelin, something we like to do when we go to a new place. Kitchin has a rating of 4.8 (1.9k reviews), so we booked it. What a mistake. We arrived at the restaurant and the first thing we noticed is how loud and BIG the restaurant was. We sat down and saw the ugly grey placemats, something you see in diners (or not anywhere really?), which definitely did not give us the table experience we were looking for. So I removed mine. The head chef (bless him), came over to the table said hello and asked us how the dinner was going, before we had even had the chance to taste any of the meals. We had picked the “Prestige” menu. We started off with small complements from the chef, which were anything but exciting. Very bland and dry, missing any creativity whatsoever, a common theme throughout the evening. The ingredients were premium: scallop and caviar (check, check), langoustine (check), Wagyu (check), but that is NOT enough to make a dish a Michelin star experience, when the plating and the rest of the ingredients lack imagination, you just receive a premium mediocre experience. The leaves and salad bits accompanying the dishes were mostly all WILTED, to say the least disappointing. The fish dish was overcooked and dry, same goes for the langoustine… which is just ridiculous considering that’s the main element of the dish. The sauces were a hit and miss, a couldn’t even save the dishes. Overall it felt like the place was trying to get away with the price by putting fancy ingredients on the menu (£550, normal wine pairing for 2) as he dinner felt more like a conveyor belt of disappointment. It is a business, not a restaurant. Very sad as we were truly excited by the reputation of the restaurant, which from the most recent reviews is clearly slipping. I also want to point out how nice our sommelier Quentin was. He was very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about his craft. He had picked out some great wine pairings and we really appreciate that, the only reason I’m putting 2 starts for the service.

We enjoyed afternoon tea in the afternoon. The large grounds were beautiful and green. All the cakes were beautiful, delicate, and delicious without being too sweet. The scone was crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, and firm throughout, with a grainy texture. It was cold from the beginning, so I wanted it to be served warm. The savory was quite good, and it wasn't too much and was the size that I could eat it all. Although it was a wonderful reception room with a nice view from the window, it was a disappointing shop. I made a reservation by entering my card number from the official website. When I tried to pay after finishing my meal on the day of the meal, I was told that it was not necessary. I thought I was paying by card that I entered on the website. Later, I received a double payment from the credit card company I entered. I contacted the hotel and store via email about 5-6 times, but there was no response. After consulting with my payment card company, I managed to get one charge stopped. What should I do if there is no response even though the amount is large? It's a shame considering it's a historic hotel and store. I had planned to go there next time I came to Edinburgh, but I decided against it. Please deal with the basics properly. If you are making an online reservation and can enter your card number, please order.

We were recommended to this restaurant by our hotel and so enjoyed it we went back for a second meal. We tried the recommended Cullen Skink soup (similar to clam chowder but made with smoked fish) and loved it. Ditto for the whole sea bass. On the second night, we shared the huge pot of mussels and then the venison done to perfection. Small, unassuming restaurant but a first-rate kitchen and friendly and attentive wait staff that make you feel welcome as soon as you arrive. Highly recommend on your next visit to Edinburgh.

Got the scallops starter, which was nice but nothing special for the price. We had to wait at least 20-25 minutes for our main mussels to come as they forgot about it. Which was fine as they didn't charge for the bread. Probably, they were in a hurry when making our mains as we felt it was not a proper full portion of mussels , we were a bit disappointed, actually. We would have not been annoyed by the described situation, but after asking for the bill, they put a 10%service charge on. I'm normally OK with service charge but after watching the most demoralised staff I've seen in a while for more than 2 hours and forgetting our mains we felt like it's a bit cheeky to put that SC on. Food was OK but nothing special, you'd probably get this food for cheaper and with better service somewhere else in town. We will not be rushed to be back.
