Fantastic pub near the city centre. Staff were polite and knowledgeable. Food was excellent with a wide variety of craft beers and lagers that were all well maintained.

Club sandwich with charred bacon, almost no sauce and toast on the toaster. Dry and grilled industrial chicken. Good beer and good haggis croquettes

Fish & Chips with bones were greasy. Service staff were kind and prompt.

Stopped here for a bit of brunch during the week while on vacation. The Chicken and Waffles are delicious! They also have very good Bloody Mary drinks. Place was spotless and very clean. Staff is attentive and friendly. Food is delicious. Highly recommend.

We had a family lunch and enjoyed the meals. I personally like the Scottish Breakfast and the Red Squirrel hamburger. The service there was good and patient even during the busy lunch time. Thanks for your service.

Delicious food in pleasant surroundings. Very convenient for Edinburgh City Centre. Nice lunch menu, with small plates and larger main dishes. Decent selection for vegetarians. Will definitely be back.

Have to say the Red Squirrel did our group proud. I was arranging the meet up in Edinburgh for some visiting American authors to connect with their readers. Struggled to get a central location that would take a group of 20 or more for brunch, and this place said yes no problem. The staff were great with the fluidity of the group too, as others who found out about the meet popped in and out over the two and a half hours we were there. For Edinburgh the food and drink was reasonably priced, and those with dietary requirements had no problem finding something to eat. I had a full breakfast, and have to say I thourghouly enjoyed it. I even ate the Lorne sausage after a wee taste, and it's not something I usually like. The only thing any of us had a wee gripe about was the bench seats at our tables. Not great for those of us with disabilities and a bit uncomfortable after a while overall.

Hannah and Lewis could not have been more attentive and lovely. We made a point of going back again. Food was lovely but really it was the welcome that we loved. We are coming back to Edinburgh in March next year and will make a point of enjoying the veggie breakfast and best avo on toast I’ve had in a while. Just annoyed we did discover this place earlier in our trip.

Food is pretty good, by far one of the best I have tried in Edinburg if your budget is not very high. Service is lovely, but that is not a surprise in Scotland. The place is so very beautiful and the music they play is also very nice. I have loved this place I'm just sorry I couldn't tip them more because of my low budget because they are great.

Early breakfast before we explored wonderful Edinburgh. Great flavoured coffee and tasty breakfast with quality ingredients. Really helpful service with a smile. Atmosphere was chilled as early before noon. Wish we had the time later on to try the evening meal and drinks.

After our first beer and food, the servers seemed to completely avoid eye contact. We had sat there probably 30 minutes with empty plates and, more importantly, glasses before we’re were able to get someone’s attention, even when we were sat by the ordering station

Really nice laid back bar. Great for a quiet drink with friends. The cocktails weren't 100% but when I asked for a cocktail to be changed as it wasn't the best they did change it and with a smile too 😊 x

Went to this Pub on our arrival in Edinburgh and what a surprise ! The service team is welcoming and wholesome ! The Old Fashioned was probably one of the best I've had. The Haggis Bonbons were a great discovery for a somewhat infamous dish and the whisky sauce was a perfect match. Thank you for this wonderful moment !

Called in here for food. If I wasn't so tired of walking around the city I would have walked back out. I have never left a bad review but need to this time. The server had very dirty nails and clothing. But was a pleasant young man. My glass had grubby finger prints on the rim. The food was expensive for the quality, taste and quantities.

Menu looked good. Good was sub-par for a town with so many options. Chose this one as dog-friendly. Very good with the dogs. Expensive for what it was.

Not sure the gastropub label is warranted, just normal pub grub with a one or two pound mark up ‘cos tourism. Wide ranging selection of beers though, usually plenty of local options. Service was friendly and fast. Food quite mediocre but nothing wrong with it, just not great. Would defo go back for beers though!

Cal, the “NY” waiter, was very friendly and the food was AMAZING! The chicken sandwich might have been the best I’ve ever had and the truffle mac and cheese was good too.

We visited on a Tuesday evening and had booked a table in advance. We were greeted by a lovely guy (in fact all the waiting staff were lovely). We were given a table in the corner in the window which had lots of space for our two labs. Straight away he bought over water and biscuits for the dogs which was such a nice touch! We had two mocktails and two burgers - proper pub grub! Service was super quick and food was great! Would 100% recommend to anyone especially if you have dogs!

Amazing place for a pit stop between visits!! I had the BEST red pepper hummus in a long time. They serve 20 different draft beers in all possible sizes, perfect for sampling! Waiters are nice and fast. A must visit!

Me and my partner were in Edinburgh for my birthday and needed to find a nice, dog friendly restaurant. We were welcomed by a gentleman, who shows us to our seats. Our server then became a truly lovely lady, called Abbie. She greeted Bailey with a bowl of water and 3 gravy bones (which he thoroughly enjoyed!) I spilled the water bowl on my way to the lavatory, (so embarrassing!) But Abbie reassured me it was absolutely fine and that she is usually the one to do it. Abbie even let my partner try out different ales and recommended ones she thought she'd like, which added a personal touch to our experience. I ordered the red squirrel burger (delish!) And my partner ordered the truffle mac and cheese (which was huge as it came with garlic bread and fires!) We both thoroughly enjoyed! Service was speedy too. For afters we had keylime pie and a banoffee pie to share, both were exceptional and were freshly made that morning. Prices were reasonable for the quality and overall experience. Would highly recommended this establishment!

Food was not nice. No truffle in the truffle mac and cheese (it was also overcooked). The linguine had so much oil, you could make an indian dish for a family of 6. The crisps that came with the linguine dish were also soggy.

Red Squirrel is great place for breakfast or night chatting over drinks. Their breakfast was delicious and filling. The mimosas were pleasantly light. Overall, an enjoyable stay. I love the interior design! I highly recommend! :)

Had a really good lunch at the Red Squirrel. Service was great from Cal and Kirsty, there was just the two of them and there was no delay to service at all despite it being really busy. Food was great too.

I think I should have got a burger looking at the reviews but thought oh I’ll try something different so went for tacos and they were a bit tasteless which was a shame. Nothing on the wrap before they were made up and the chicken was rather boring. Dog friendly place and the beers are great, actual craft stuff: the chicken burgers were apparently great too.

The food here is just too expensive for what it is. The beer was flat. The staff were excellent.

We needed Google maps to find this place because it's not in the tourist area but its within an easy walk from the Scott monument. We're glad we made the effort! Great friendly staff. Prompt service. Reasonably priced and best of all really great food. Can highly recommend the halloumi burger. Superb.

Popped in before The Stranglers gig at the Usher Hall. We had booked in advance and was busy as rugby was also on. Food was lovely and nice welcoming atmosphere. The server who looked after us was amazing at her job(Didn't get her name.Long dark hair). Nothing was too much trouble for her and always cheerful.

Delicious food, and very dog friendly! We made a last minute booking on a Sunday evening. The pub had a lovely relaxed atmosphere, and our dog was given a bowl of water and treats. The food was served quickly, and was delicious! We had two burgers and shared a dessert, both of which we highly rated. We’ll definitely be back!

We loved this place and visited a few times on our 3 day visit to the city. We didn’t try the food and only had beer/cocktails. A cosy atmosphere, friendly staff, a great variety of drinks and the cocktails were delish!

Super little bar/ restaurant. We had a couple of nice burgers, couple of beers and enjoyed a couple of very pleasant hours. Funky decor, good service and good value.

I’ve been here a couple times and every time has been so good! I highly recommend the Halloumi burger and nachos, while the portion of nachos are on the smaller side they are delicious!! The drinks are also really good, I recommend the Apple and Raspberry cocktail, it was stunning. For being right in the centre this place is reasonably priced, and for a good amount of food. Would recommend coming by if you’re in the area!!

Wow, what a great find. Recommend you book a reservation but we rocked-up (with our dog) and they graciously fitted us in. Vibrant pub/restaurant and very well trained staff.

We were visiting Edinburgh from Dublin and went to the Red Squirrel for breakfast a few times and for a lovely steak dinner. The food was amazing and the staff were always warm and welcoming. They really made the experience great. The restaurant has a chill vibe and the quality for the price is amazing. We will definitely go back on our next visit.

Came in for lunch and had a great time. We ordered the mac n cheese (the garlic bread was amazing!!) and the red squirrel burger, the only complaint about that is that the burger was a bit dry, some more sauce or cheese would've perhaps helped, but otherwise really good!! The chips were absolutely amazing. Service was quick and lovely.

My friends and I celebrated our Christmas here. It was spectacular! Definitely come back for next year.

Big Standard Bar, however the speed of service is not great... They don't seem to have experienced staff behind the bar and this can lead to queues forming.. the also have a tendency to stand chatting

drinks arrived 30 minutes after ordering with coffee cold as they’d been sat on the bar for 10 minutes. Food order arrived 15 minutes later however items missing off order and 1 party member received their toast 10 minutes after others had finished eating and it was stone cold. 1 girl behind bar making drinks and only 1 serving which was just not enough considering the Christmas market is on and there was 10+ tables full. The table next to us had a reservation and sat for 20 minutes before being given a menu and walk ins were served first. Overall poor experience.

Dog friendly bar/restaurant. Wasn't too keen on the mimosa and waffles though the buttermilk chicken tasted lovely. I found the waffles a bit too sweet for my liking (thought they'd be savoury waffles) and they were drowning in maple syrup. Maybe other folks prefer that. They did have a lovely variety for breakfast and brunch so I won't knock it, I'd come here again and try something different. It's nice that it's also dog friendly and the prices are reasonable considering location by Edinburgh Castle. Oh and don't confused this place with the red Cockerel cafe lol.

I had high hopes for Red Squirrel, because good artisan eateries are increasingly rare these days. It had always stood out in an area I infrequently visit on the way to the cinema, and as such I stopped there yesterday evening, at around 6.20pm, for a 7.30 film ten minutes up the road. The place was fairly busy with the after work crowd, mainly drinks customers rather than diners, as far as I could see. The vibe was good. There were four staff that I noticed- two bar staff and two waiting staff, who all seemed understandably preoccupied with an area of ceiling water ingress which had put four decent sized tables out of action, I suppose probably from the drinking venue upstairs. I mention this because it might explain some of what I'm about to write. I arrived in good time, was seated after a little wait, and ordered promptly. I ordered 'The Chilli Death' burger, described as "Steak burger, smoked cheddar cheese, sour cream, chilli death sauce, fresh chilli", but without the 'chilli death sauce', as I was about to sit through a 2.5h film ;-). The waitress clearly acknowledged this with a considerate smile. Cue a 50 minute wait, which I tolerated, but felt the need to order to order a second pint, to have something to wash the meal down with. When the burger finally did arrive, it was dry. A burger in a bun only, with what may have been a few scraps of lettuce. I was asked once how things were, just after the food arrived, before I'd noticed the paucity of the burger, and the staff went back to attending to the leaks. As it had gotten to 7.25pm by the time I'd finished, I went to the bar to pay, bristling for a complaint and willing to pay perhaps £10 or £12 towards the cited £14.95 cost of the meal. I don't mind missing cinema adverts, but after a five minute wait standing by the pay station at the bar, clearly coated and ready to leave, I had received no service. My choice was to wait to have an argument about the meal and miss the start of the film, or leave. I chose the latter, the first time in my life I've ever not paid for something that was due. If the venue read this, of course I am still willing to return and pay something towards the cost of the meal. But it was a profoundly disappointing experience in an area where there are plenty of 'gray squirrels', and I don't expect to return- I've eaten there just once before, a while back, and remember being underwhelmed by the food then, too. I'm inclined to think that this venture is overstretched- even on a Tuesday night- and is surviving largely on its (admirably varied) draft beer offerings to the immediate afterwork crowd. I sincerely hope to be proved wrong, but I doubt I will be back. I'd have had a more nutritious and satisfying meal at the nearby McDonalds, frankly, for half the price. On the plus side, the beer was fine; I walked into the cinema just as the title card appeared, and it was a terrific film.

Food is amazing, great service, waiter was attentive and got our orders spot on. Flawless service, which can be rare these days. Food was so tasty and well priced. Portions were decent and set us up for the day.

Not a review of the restaurant who where great and very helpful, more of a review of just eat. Almost 3 hrs I had to wait due to a "glitch" which meant that the restaurant where told a driver was on their way when they actually weren't. I wasn't told any of this until I contacted the restaurant 15mins after the delivery time had elapsed (having changed 3 times alresdy) I'd hope I get a full refund from just eat not in credit for the app but for actually money back to my account. Just eat gets a zero star review from me tonight.

We were really fortunate to come across this place when we were looking for somewhere to have breakfast. The surroundings were delightful and the staff were really lovely. The vegetarian breakfast was excellent. I can see us coming here again the next time we visit Edinburgh.
