Well presented pub food at prices slightly lower than those in the historic centre. The place is spacious and quite lively on weekends, it is better to make a reservation.

I ordered Scottish breakfast, avocado sandwich, and cappuccino and it came out to 24.8 pounds. It was okay for the price of Edinburgh. I was worried because I heard there were people who liked the haggis, but it was delicious!!!!! Highly recommended!!!!

The service was great. Everyone was super friendly. The food was good with a pretty good variety and the atmosphere was nice.

6pm on a Sat evening. Packed out so always a good sign, so glad we had booked. Dog friendly venue so we had our Boy with us. Bowl of water and a wee plate of treats brought over. One happy boy. Haggis Bon Bons to start for my wife. Rather tasty, Haddock and Chips & Cheese Burger mains. Both great. And we each had the crumble for dessert. Could have shared it between us. 🤣 All in a great night. Good food, great atmosphere and brilliant staff.

We came to Edinburgh not knowing where we were going to eat. Looked at other pubs in the ‘new quarter’. Either full or no food. Came cross Red Squirrel and were definitely not disappointed. Caring and courteous staff, prompt service, accommodating, excellent food, hot food. Can’t believe we were so lucky to come across this place by accident. Reasonably priced too and not crammed in. Well done and thank you.

This traditional pub has a fantastic range of craft beers and is an ideal drop in for a pre or post show drink if attending the Usher Hall.

Christmas work lunch. Lovely place and great cakes but do feel the main food would have been better as a traditional Christmas meal

Un lugar maravilloso para comer antes de ir a la ciudad. La Ardilla Roja nos proporcionó una variedad de platos que eran perfectos para mi esposa, que es intolerante al gluten, y para mí. Tengo que recomendar sus hamburguesas vegetarianas, rellenas y húmedas, para nada como las hamburguesas de cartón que sirven la mayoría de los lugares, sus aros de cebolla eran de primera categoría! También tenían una buena selección de cervezas y vinos, y el personal se aseguró de que estaba bien atendido. Un lugar agradable, tranquilo, con un personal acogedor y amable.

Club sandwich with charred bacon, almost no sauce and toast on the toaster. Dry and grilled industrial chicken. Good beer and good haggis croquettes

Fish & Chips with bones were greasy. Service staff were kind and prompt.

Great place. Food was delicious. Beers were on point. To top it off, the music was awesome. Most venues don’t get this right, but it was great! Definitely recommend the Red Squirrel. 👍🏻

haggis bonbons were very good. Ramp steak was not bad, but with a bit of tendons.

Stopped here for a bit of brunch during the week while on vacation. The Chicken and Waffles are delicious! They also have very good Bloody Mary drinks. Place was spotless and very clean. Staff is attentive and friendly. Food is delicious. Highly recommend.

We had a family lunch and enjoyed the meals. I personally like the Scottish Breakfast and the Red Squirrel hamburger. The service there was good and patient even during the busy lunch time. Thanks for your service.

Delicious food in pleasant surroundings. Very convenient for Edinburgh City Centre. Nice lunch menu, with small plates and larger main dishes. Decent selection for vegetarians. Will definitely be back.

Have to say the Red Squirrel did our group proud. I was arranging the meet up in Edinburgh for some visiting American authors to connect with their readers. Struggled to get a central location that would take a group of 20 or more for brunch, and this place said yes no problem. The staff were great with the fluidity of the group too, as others who found out about the meet popped in and out over the two and a half hours we were there. For Edinburgh the food and drink was reasonably priced, and those with dietary requirements had no problem finding something to eat. I had a full breakfast, and have to say I thourghouly enjoyed it. I even ate the Lorne sausage after a wee taste, and it's not something I usually like. The only thing any of us had a wee gripe about was the bench seats at our tables. Not great for those of us with disabilities and a bit uncomfortable after a while overall.

Hannah and Lewis could not have been more attentive and lovely. We made a point of going back again. Food was lovely but really it was the welcome that we loved. We are coming back to Edinburgh in March next year and will make a point of enjoying the veggie breakfast and best avo on toast I’ve had in a while. Just annoyed we did discover this place earlier in our trip.

Food is pretty good, by far one of the best I have tried in Edinburg if your budget is not very high. Service is lovely, but that is not a surprise in Scotland. The place is so very beautiful and the music they play is also very nice. I have loved this place I'm just sorry I couldn't tip them more because of my low budget because they are great.

Early breakfast before we explored wonderful Edinburgh. Great flavoured coffee and tasty breakfast with quality ingredients. Really helpful service with a smile. Atmosphere was chilled as early before noon. Wish we had the time later on to try the evening meal and drinks.

After our first beer and food, the servers seemed to completely avoid eye contact. We had sat there probably 30 minutes with empty plates and, more importantly, glasses before we’re were able to get someone’s attention, even when we were sat by the ordering station

Really nice laid back bar. Great for a quiet drink with friends. The cocktails weren't 100% but when I asked for a cocktail to be changed as it wasn't the best they did change it and with a smile too 😊 x

Went to this Pub on our arrival in Edinburgh and what a surprise ! The service team is welcoming and wholesome ! The Old Fashioned was probably one of the best I've had. The Haggis Bonbons were a great discovery for a somewhat infamous dish and the whisky sauce was a perfect match. Thank you for this wonderful moment !

Called in here for food. If I wasn't so tired of walking around the city I would have walked back out. I have never left a bad review but need to this time. The server had very dirty nails and clothing. But was a pleasant young man. My glass had grubby finger prints on the rim. The food was expensive for the quality, taste and quantities.

Menu looked good. Good was sub-par for a town with so many options. Chose this one as dog-friendly. Very good with the dogs. Expensive for what it was.

Not sure the gastropub label is warranted, just normal pub grub with a one or two pound mark up ‘cos tourism. Wide ranging selection of beers though, usually plenty of local options. Service was friendly and fast. Food quite mediocre but nothing wrong with it, just not great. Would defo go back for beers though!

Cal, the “NY” waiter, was very friendly and the food was AMAZING! The chicken sandwich might have been the best I’ve ever had and the truffle mac and cheese was good too.

We visited on a Tuesday evening and had booked a table in advance. We were greeted by a lovely guy (in fact all the waiting staff were lovely). We were given a table in the corner in the window which had lots of space for our two labs. Straight away he bought over water and biscuits for the dogs which was such a nice touch! We had two mocktails and two burgers - proper pub grub! Service was super quick and food was great! Would 100% recommend to anyone especially if you have dogs!

Amazing place for a pit stop between visits!! I had the BEST red pepper hummus in a long time. They serve 20 different draft beers in all possible sizes, perfect for sampling! Waiters are nice and fast. A must visit!

Me and my partner were in Edinburgh for my birthday and needed to find a nice, dog friendly restaurant. We were welcomed by a gentleman, who shows us to our seats. Our server then became a truly lovely lady, called Abbie. She greeted Bailey with a bowl of water and 3 gravy bones (which he thoroughly enjoyed!) I spilled the water bowl on my way to the lavatory, (so embarrassing!) But Abbie reassured me it was absolutely fine and that she is usually the one to do it. Abbie even let my partner try out different ales and recommended ones she thought she'd like, which added a personal touch to our experience. I ordered the red squirrel burger (delish!) And my partner ordered the truffle mac and cheese (which was huge as it came with garlic bread and fires!) We both thoroughly enjoyed! Service was speedy too. For afters we had keylime pie and a banoffee pie to share, both were exceptional and were freshly made that morning. Prices were reasonable for the quality and overall experience. Would highly recommended this establishment!

A classic pub with lots of options for cocktails and beers. The service and the music are always great. The loaded fries with haggis were quite good too.

Food was not nice. No truffle in the truffle mac and cheese (it was also overcooked). The linguine had so much oil, you could make an indian dish for a family of 6. The crisps that came with the linguine dish were also soggy.

Red Squirrel is great place for breakfast or night chatting over drinks. Their breakfast was delicious and filling. The mimosas were pleasantly light. Overall, an enjoyable stay. I love the interior design! I highly recommend! :)

Had a really good lunch at the Red Squirrel. Service was great from Cal and Kirsty, there was just the two of them and there was no delay to service at all despite it being really busy. Food was great too.

I think I should have got a burger looking at the reviews but thought oh I’ll try something different so went for tacos and they were a bit tasteless which was a shame. Nothing on the wrap before they were made up and the chicken was rather boring. Dog friendly place and the beers are great, actual craft stuff: the chicken burgers were apparently great too.

The food here is just too expensive for what it is. The beer was flat. The staff were excellent.

We needed Google maps to find this place because it's not in the tourist area but its within an easy walk from the Scott monument. We're glad we made the effort! Great friendly staff. Prompt service. Reasonably priced and best of all really great food. Can highly recommend the halloumi burger. Superb.

Popped in before The Stranglers gig at the Usher Hall. We had booked in advance and was busy as rugby was also on. Food was lovely and nice welcoming atmosphere. The server who looked after us was amazing at her job(Didn't get her name.Long dark hair). Nothing was too much trouble for her and always cheerful.

Delicious food, and very dog friendly! We made a last minute booking on a Sunday evening. The pub had a lovely relaxed atmosphere, and our dog was given a bowl of water and treats. The food was served quickly, and was delicious! We had two burgers and shared a dessert, both of which we highly rated. We’ll definitely be back!

We loved this place and visited a few times on our 3 day visit to the city. We didn’t try the food and only had beer/cocktails. A cosy atmosphere, friendly staff, a great variety of drinks and the cocktails were delish!

Super little bar/ restaurant. We had a couple of nice burgers, couple of beers and enjoyed a couple of very pleasant hours. Funky decor, good service and good value.

I’ve been here a couple times and every time has been so good! I highly recommend the Halloumi burger and nachos, while the portion of nachos are on the smaller side they are delicious!! The drinks are also really good, I recommend the Apple and Raspberry cocktail, it was stunning. For being right in the centre this place is reasonably priced, and for a good amount of food. Would recommend coming by if you’re in the area!!

Wow, what a great find. Recommend you book a reservation but we rocked-up (with our dog) and they graciously fitted us in. Vibrant pub/restaurant and very well trained staff.

We were visiting Edinburgh from Dublin and went to the Red Squirrel for breakfast a few times and for a lovely steak dinner. The food was amazing and the staff were always warm and welcoming. They really made the experience great. The restaurant has a chill vibe and the quality for the price is amazing. We will definitely go back on our next visit.

Very central. Chose as dog friendly and close to daughter's abode.Friendly staff and good reasonably priced food. Pleasant atmosphere and comfy seating. Dog got VIP treatment which of course was the most important aspect!
