We stayed in room number 341. It is the street facing room in the annex. The bathroom was good sized, although by no means luxurious. The room was cramped. For some reason it had to side chairs. The important feature of those is that neither my husband, nor I could fit our hips in those. And we are not happy people. The room would be better without them. There is a luggage rack, and the closet is roomy. 40-inch (max?) TV mounted above the desk far from the bed. Windows open, which is necessary for cooling, but there is so much street noise even late at night. We chose to stay here because of the location and that was the defining feature of the place. Even the cab driver told us we were in a good location! Walk to touristy stuff but also close to the areas where people live and enjoy the city. Breakfast was unimpressive; we skipped it the second and third days. It feels good to support the veterans association, which is what this house is for, so were we to return I would probably stay again, but expect nothing of the breakfast and try to stay in the main house.

Room was OK, clean. One morning tea/coffee/milk not replenished. The main problem was breakfast. Not freshly cooked, pre cooked and left on plates prior to being served. Hard bacon and luke warm, potato scones hard, flat and luke warm. One morning asked for poached eggs on toast, received 2 rock hard eggs on one flat slice of toast with crusts cut off. Total rubbish, when we complained waitress said cook never listens, complained to duty manager who stated nobody else complained!? Asked for pot of tea refill, waitress took pot away returned pot with same tea bags just filled pot with hot water!? When you're paying over £200 per night for bed and breakfast, this level of breakfast service is totally unacceptable. It might be acceptable as an ex military club but for money paying guests its must improve drastically.

We saw this recommended on TripAdvisor when searching for a hotel in Edinburgh. We were told at the time of booking that we would be in the Annexe. This is just a few yards from the main entrance and down a flight of outside steps. The room was small but adequate , and the bed comfortable. It was quiet at night. There was a shower but no bath and three upholstered chairs. One was without arms and useful a desk chair. The other two were armchairs but only 14 inches wide , so might be uncomfortable for anyone with hips of more than 42 inches . The breakfasts were excellent except that although there was fresh fruit salad every morning there was no bowl of fruit, eg oranges and bananas , but the hot breakfasts were freshly made and very good. Wonderful porridge, full Scottish vegetarian and non vegetarian breakfast very good, as were the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. Tea and coffee were freshly brewed and not from a self service machine like many hotels. We had dinner there one night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The starters were good AND WE REALLY liked T HE VENISON AND PHEASANT BOURGUIGNON We also spent one afternoon in the very nice lounge in the main building, comfy sofas and a good choice of periodicals.

I recently attended a private dinner function at this venue. The building had a lovely modern finish while retaining its original traditional features. Staff at reception were very helpful and attentive, however bar staff did seem disinterested. Food was pre-ordered for the event and was nothing exceptional, with relatively small portion sizes too. Overall a beautiful venue that could be improved with better food quality and motivated staff.

I had a lucky escape from this place. I was completely put off by the poor attitude of the girl on reception. Everything seemed to be a bother to her. I got so fed up dealing with her that I didn't go ahead with my booking. There are plenty of nicer restaurants in Edinburgh where the staff give a willing smile and listen to your booking requirements.

Great small hotel located in a quiet corner of central Edinburgh. This is an excellent choice if you value a boutique hotel (35 rooms total) with character over a chain hotel with loads of amenities. There is a bar & restaurant but no room service, free WiFi, walking distance to central Edinburgh plus access to a small private gated garden just across the street. Hotel is located in a residential neighborhood. Very safe for solo travelers. The staff couldn't have been friendlier! I had room # 11, which was at the front of the hotel, on the second floor, and faced the small garden across the street. There was a king-sized bed, writing desk, and chair, small table with two additional chairs and an armoire. The bathroom was spacious and contained a tub/shower combination, bidet and commode, and a pedestal sink. A hairdryer, as well as an ironing board and iron, were all in the armoire — plenty of electrical outlets and USB charging slots. I ate only one adequate dinner at the hotel. Never had breakfast as I preferred to visit the Pret a Manger that is just up the street as you head to Princes Street. There is a Starbucks one block away on Hanover Street. So many other great local options but some people need a Starbucks fix so now you know. Yep Jacky, that mention is for you.) A bus stop is literally around the corner. Waverly Train Station is approximately 10 minutes on foot. Airport was about 30 minutes by CityLink bus (4.50 GBP); taxi was about 15 minutes (18 GBP).

The location of this hotel is great. The hotel room was pretty standard. (Room 29). Had both a shower and a bathtub. The bed, however, was two twin beds put together. Both had indentations in them and should have been replaced. The interior of the building does not have as much charm as I had hoped for. The resturant was bad. Dress code is not enforced. At both dinner and breakfast men were in tee shirts and jeans. No one seemed to care. The first night we had dinner. My glass of Merlot was flat and low quality. I had the roast of the day. It was tasteless and chewy along with being over cooked and sliced too thin. The Yorkshire pudding was dry and tough—inedible. I ate virtually none of my dinner and did not finish my wine. The wait person did not inquire about my meal. Actually, no one ever inquired about whether you liked or enjoyed your meal or whether it was satisfactory. Before our dinner was served, she delivered us someone else’s over cooked steaks and disappeared into the kitchen. It was several minutes before she returned so we could tell her. She did not inquire if we touched the food. Just picked it up and took it to the other table. She complained about how busy the restaurant was. There were only four tables. Each at a different stage in dinner. The breakfasts were nearly as bad and service painful. My wife kept choosing soggy croissants. Other than the stale one I got the first day, the ones I choose were fine. The eggs were bland no matter what style we chose. The sausage was dense and tasteless. The cold items were very limited. It was difficult watching the young wait staff slowly write out poached eggs with sausage and the write out scrambled eggs rather than using any shorthand. If ever in Edinburgh again, I might stay at the hotel based on location but not eat there.

Food waiter and bar staff were excellent. The hotel is very interesting and packed full of fabulous photographs and other fine regimental items. We were there for a wedding and that part of the day was excellent. The only part that spoiled it was the fact that when I booked I punched Royal Scots Club into Google and it came up with booking.com. I filled it in, only to find that as I had not booked through the hotel I would not enjoy certain discounts in the room and had to pay £10.50 each for breakfast. When I brought thus up with the people on the reception desk, they thought it was funny??They were however very happy with the amount on my bar bill. This rather spoiled the weekend.

We booked to come here for dinner - although we are not members.Firstly its an outstanding venue - packed full of pictures/momentos of the Regiment's illustrious history - which continues to this day.You don't have to be a member to eat here - we weren't - and I suspect that the income from the room rentals/restaurant keeps the club running for its members. However we ate in a room separately from everyone else - we were the only ones in the room. It was a wonderful room- it must be said - and it felt rather private but that may not suit everyone. They deliver very good value for money with their set menu.In all an amazing historic venue that delivers great vfm.

If you think you'll like staying in a home rather than a hotel, thus is the place for you. Club Quarters for the Scottish military, apparently they only rent rooms to help cover costs. As you enter, you realise you must be on your best manners. The rooms are very large and are furnished almost 19th century, except for the TV and nespresso coffee pot. You even have to hand in your key whenever you leave. The bathroom was very nice and spacious and the shower was great.....great shower head and water pressure. There is a dress code for the dining room. Breakfast was a full buffet and hot dishes, including a full Scottish breakfast. It's located a 5 minutes walk from Princes Street and taking Hanover Street up, there are lots of interesting shops and restaurants. Try to avoid Room 16 as it is on the way to the Breakfast room and can be noisy with guests going by. There were lots of other noise intrusions as well. There is free WiFi. Not many other amenities. But if you'relooking for a quiet stay near enough to the action, this is the place. This is not a hotel for every traveler. I enjoyed the bit of difference from the usual hotel atmosphere. This deserves just under 4 stars.

The traditional Scottish high tea (as opposed to the lighter afternoon tea) is in danger of dying out, but not at the Royal Scots Club. It is a very substantial meal served with tea or coffee (you can have soft drinks or wine, but that is not really in keeping with a high tea). I had the prawn cocktail to start with the Royal Scots Club mixed grill for my main course. The mixed grill is massive and a rival to the great Scottish breakfast, containing bacon, sausages, mushroom, eggs and black pudding with chips. You also get toast and jam. I was going to have the fresh fruit salad (you can have scones or ice cream) but frankly I was too full. The prawn cocktail was ordinary, but the mixed grill is really good. If you only have the main course (with the tea and toast), it is only £8.50 which is superb value. The surroundings are elegant with military memorabilia on display and there is a nice Scottish ambience.

I had visited the club before but never stayed the night. The location is fairly central so good from that point of view. It's maybe difficult to describe, but it feels more homely than a normal hotel and the staff seem very nice. Our room had a nice view over the park and featured a bedroom area with 2 steps leading to a study area with a desk and tea/coffee.The room was well appointed with a modern coffee machine, slippers and dressing gowns etc. Each room had it's own TV.The bathroom was newly fitted out and featured a bath and separate shower, the latter being a nice size cubicle with copious quantities of hot water at a great pressure. Two small point were that the bathroom fan was inoperative and the bath overflow had been fitted with a horrible brown gunk which maybe housekeeping should have scraped off?The bedroom area was very nice - the only complaint being a lot of dust on top of the wardrobe and also the curtains which both looked as if they hadn't been vacuumed for a year or so.Any small points would not put us off returning given the opportunity

The main dining room looks exactly like what you would expect at an established, traditional private club - soaring ceiling, rich paneling, great artwork and glass cabinets stuffed with silver chalices. It is a great setting for dinner. The food is pretty good too. The menu changes weekly and there are a wide variety of choices to please almost everyone. The £15 two course menu is a great bargain with about five choices for each course. The onion soup was excellent and the egg over black pudding and bacon delicious and unique. The mains were also tasty - roast lamb with gravy and potatoes and sole. The food is simply prepared and you won't find any fusion or wildly creative options - that's OK. The service was excellent. Our only beef was that the food came perhaps a little too quickly. We were done dinner so quickly we brought our wine bottle back to our room. Dinner here is most convenient when staying at the club and you likely won't be disappointed.

I have very rarely felt compled to give such a low rating to a meal but this was beyond a joke. It didn't matter what we'd ordered, all the steaks came out massively over cooked. Bland and flavourless. It was so bad that we actually started laughing as each course arrived. The wine was excellent & there was plenty of choice & to suit all pockets.Only a couple of gripes. My husband ordered the prawns & avocado for a starter but there was only 1 tiny piece of avocado in it & then when the fish main arrived there were no potatoes on his plate. The meal was supposed to come with them so he was a bit disappointed he had to ask for them.I'm not sure if they are used to people actually wanting to sit & savour the food & surroundings but we felt so rushed. There was only a gap of 5 minutes between our starter & main & this would have been the same between main & dessert if we hadn't asked to have a break.Possibly the other diners who come here like to eat this quickly but we certainly don't.

My wife and I traveled to Edinburgh for our sons graduation and stayed three nights at the RSC. We had a room on the top floor overlooking Abercromby Pl. It was impeccably clean, comfortable and well equipped. The bathroom was huge, and came with all the usual amenities. We found the breakfast excellent: various options served from a menu, juices, pastry, fruit and a variety of cheese from the buffet table. We didn't eat lunch or dinner at the RSC because we didn't want to bother to dress up to meet their dress code expectation. There were plenty of other options on the streets nearby. One major head ache was parking, especially on Sunday.

Einfach meinen Bericht lesen.

We only had breakfast here, but it was plentiful, tasty and offered a large choice of options in a lovely dining setting. The Hotel on the whole is luxurious, comfortable, clean and spacious to where you really don't notice other guests unless congregated for meals!

Great quality food - authentic without being flashy. Angus beef served thick, with good veggies, and breakfast had proper Scottish sausage and black pudding. Service was excellent.

Attended here recently for a family birthday celebration in a private dining room. Started off with drinks down stairs and ambience was lovely and service good. We were then ushered upstairs to our private room which was beautifully laid out. Drinks served on arrival which was great and wine served. Food was off a set menu which was slightly disappointing as we had been promised we could eat of the a la carte. Starter lovely, main course good but vegetables served were not great at all. Desert lovely. Only complaint was that I had to ask for a drinks order to be taken half way through the meal even though it was obvious not everyone was drinking the wine. All in all a good meal and a great evening

The a Royal Scots Club is a private members club with a public facing section. Meeting a friend in town and it was suggested as a venue, so worth a try. It is very pleasant. Gentleman's club decor in lounge, beautifully appointed with comfy chairs and space. People talking quietly and no music. A perfect place to get away from the hustle in town and recover in peace. Only coffee and shortbread on this trip. Biscuits lovely, and coffee fine, but that is not why you come here. A lovely place to while away some time. There is a bar and food is served, but that will have to wait for next time. Good value for the privilege!

Having two Amazon vouchers, three friends and I booked a table in advance for Sunday Lunch yesterday. Our reservation was for 2.15 p.m. which enabled us to have drinks in the lounge bar beforehand, which also included the promised Kir cocktail each. We then purchased a bottle of Prosecco which we shared between us. At the appropriate time we took our places upstairs in the Members' Diningroom where we were ushered to a table for four.We ordered a bottle of red wine and selected our menu choices. The two boys opted for the pea and ham soup and us two girls opted for the prawn cocktail. No bread rolls were served by way of accompaniment so these had to be asked for. Then on to our mains and everyone selected the roast beef with all the trimmings. Absolutely delicious! Empty plates were returned all round with compliments to the chef. For dessert the boys opted for the cheeseboard while the girls chose the chocolate and cherries which came in separate ramekins. The boys had asked for glasses of port to complement their individual cheeseboards and I asked for a glass of kirsch to go with my dessert. The boys received their port but, unfortunately, my kirsch never arrived! The ambience of the Members' Diningroom is magnificent with lots of regimental silverware on display in various glass cabinets and cases. The place was very busy but our waitress was very friendly and attentive and the staff seemed to cope well with the large number of diners. When the time of reckoning came to pay for the extra courses plus our drinks, I pointed out that I had never received my kirsch liqueur. This was duly checked out by a member of staff who went through and discovered it sitting on a worktop in the kitchen. It had been totally forgotten - which meant a reduction of £3.50 from the final bill. After our sumptuous meal we all felt replete so we adjourned back downstairs to the lounge bar where we enjoyed our liqueurs and a long chat until it came time to order a taxi home.Great dining experience in a Club which has long opened its doors to non members. I have been in for drinks on many occasions and attended various dinners in the downstairs function suite - but this is the first time I have actually lunched in the Members' Diningroom. The Club is in a beautiful setting in Abercromby Place overlooking Queen Street Gardens with regular bus services stopping at the end of the road. However, if you choose to go to the Club on a Sunday do remember that bus services run every half hour. However, the staff will be more than happy to ring for a taxi for you. Would highly recommend this venue. Very much looking forward to going back again soon.

Couldn't agree more with the previous review! We stayed here three weekends ago for two nights for a Veterinary Reunion.( about 30 of us) From the outset it was clear that this venue is not quite sure what it is trying to be - a club or a hotel? Our room 20 was fine and comfortable although the shower head in the en- suite was not removable and was OK if you are over 6' tall! We ate out on the Friday night as the in- house menu didn't look enticing. Our main dinner was on the Saturday night. The starter was totally lacking imagination. Hard- boiled egg- halved with almost raw green beans and a bit of asparagus. A five year old could have done better! The main we chose was venison. It was overcooked, tough and had obviously been cooked in advance.. One of our party sent hers back as it was inedible. Guess what- she got the same one back again! By this time there were a few mutterings round the table.Dessert was basic - meringue with cream and fruit- couldn't really get that wrong - could they?Worst of all was the after - effects of this mediocre meal. More than a few of our party had dodgy tummies and the general concensus was that the venison had been re- heated. Those who didn't have venison seemed to be fine.Sunday breakfast was good ( for those who made it to the dining room!) however after that there was no food or drink available at all throughout the Sunday. So you had to go out to get a cup of coffee. This place really wants to get its act together - first thing - get a new chef! Parking is a nightmare ....!! There are lots of places to stay in Edinburgh which are user- friendly... I rest my case...

My partner and I went for Sunday lunch using vouchers bought through the Amazon local deal service. We had previously attended meetings at the club and found the setting glorious. Other than canapes (whcih were very good) we had not eaten here before and we now wish that we hadn't bothered. A cokctail, a glass of wine or a soft drink was part of the deal but we were simply given a small and rather insipid kir royal as soon as we sat down, we were not given a choice. I had roast pork and this reached the level of a tolerable school dinner. My partner's roast beef was so overcooked and tough that she could have soled her shoes with it. When she commented on the quality to the waitress she was at least asked if she would like something else but looking around at other diners' meals she saw nothing appetising. We left with a very strong suspicion that everything was pre-cooked and then warmed up on demand. Never again!

The food is fine. Not great. The setting interesting as it is a traditional club. Service nice.Remember that if you like your meat "rare" it will be overcooked if you do not ask for "blue".

Ambiance is delightful in this traditional dining room, but the meal was uneven. The smoked salmon starter appeared without the published brown bread and the chocolate fondant dessert was quite appalling, having been micro-waved so that no chocolate sauce was evident and the sponge had become very dry. The lemon tart had a heavy dry pastry base and my party thought that it was possibly "shop bought" The Chablis accompanying our meal was excellent but not satisfactorily chilled. Main courses were better, steaks being well-cooked and sea bass quite acceptable although mashed potato was cold. A charming but inexperienced waitress added to the unusual experience. Not great cooking, but lovely surroundings.

Quiet little pub near the st james centre, service was outstanding by Alex behind the bar. A little expensive but understandable for the location!
