Dissatisfied, great staff, great location, great venue. Seriously bland food. All dishes are priced as if Michelin star. I had the chicken main course which was very poor. Absolutely no taste, chicken was rather tough. Honestly, my kids would not have eaten it, so so bland. The potatoes were lukewarm and tasted greasy, again, completely unseasoned. On the other hand the spinach salad was amazing. My wife had the lasagne which looked very creamy and she said was really nice. Deserts were nice though, even if very small, but unlike the main courses, sensibly price. Wine was very expensive too. I will not be back and given the choice and quality of restaurants in the surrounding area, they must try harder. I cannot recommend.

Oh my. Go here for a treat. Food was astonishing, staff was very pleasant.

Great food and friendly service

The representation of Italian cuisine abroad makes me angry. This restaurant is an example of this. Appreciated by tourists, perhaps, and by some Italians who have forgotten Italian food. Preparations without love, low quality, approximate execution of the dishes, zero tradition. We should train ourselves to respect Italian cuisine abroad... Inadequate quality/price.

Goodness me ‘what a difference a day makes’ - Edinburgh was deserted yesterday with the effects of the storm but today she was getting back to her usual delightful and welcoming self. A visit to Contini reinforced this feeling but it is always a delight to take advantage of the wonderful experience here. As always, an imaginative Menu beautifully cooked and presented. Super staff make the experience complete.

Visited 21/1 for a three course dinner with Prosecco. Our waiter was Andrew , he was very professional, attentive but not over bearing. An asset to you team at Contini George St. The Food was excellent both for me and my wife who is Pescatarian. Excellent sized portions and wonderful flavours. We had been in Rome last week eating in authentic Italian restaurants and we both agreed that this meal was better than any we had in Rome. Great Scottish Italian cooking with lots of attention to the “performance” of looking after the customers. Well done, we are regulars and will be back again and again. Grazie Mille.

Went for a friend's dinner to celebrate her PHD. I had a cake delivered to the restaurant and the team were very helpful. Attilla and a sweet young girl whose name began with a b - can't remember her name sorry! - were fantastic. Some of the best service I've had and the food was delicious too - 70% sorbet was something special. All in all, helped make a special occassion more special. Thank you!

A very nicely decorated resturant, with a varried menu, and very good list of wines. They were able to deliver a very tasty, vegitarian pasta as well as a gluten free meal when requested. The waiter was very attentive and took pride in the food being served and made sure that all our needs were more than met. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time, and was not only pleasing to the eye, but was extremely good. The prices were a little high, but you expect this when you have heard such good reviews of the resturant. I would suggest that they be a little more friendly when you approach the greeter, our experience was that even though we had called ahead for a reservation, she was put out that we arrived 5 minutes early. Otherwise, we shall be going again, whenever we are in Edinburgh, as the food was outstanding. Recommend for a romantic dinner, the decor and service is superior.

Really disappointing visit to Contini’s. Not the standards I’ve experienced before at the restaurant. One of our mains was served cold and when “replaced” the pasta was chewy. The service was also disappointing. Hopefully just some post festive period blues but had expected much better for George Street in Edinburgh.

I had no booking but they accommodated me. They explained that food would be 15 minutes minimum. It came in 10. Great VFM given the location, portion size and quality. Wait staff were friendly and professional. Kudos to Naomi. Attentive, helpful & knowledgeable. She knew the dishes and product origin. I’ll be back for dinner next time I visit Scotland. Visited this restaurant as we’d previously been here a few years ago and loved it. It was just as we remembered it! Food was amazing and service was great. The atmosphere of the restaurant is lovely and it’s slightly dimmed so creates a great ambience. We’d visited with a couple who hadn’t been before and they loved it too. Would definitely recommend!

Was visiting the Chatsworth exhibition at the National Gallery, and decided to pop into the Cantini espresso cafe for a moments refreshment. After being served by a glum looking lady, I looked forward to tucking into my hot chocolate and chocolate tray bake. The cake had an immediate strong aftertaste of bitter coconut oil/cream, very unpleasant and I couldn't finish it, the hot chocolate was fine.

Yet another fabulous visit to the fabulous Contini restaurant. Such a wonderfully welcoming establishment with amazingly talented and enthusiastic Staff. Everything on the menu is always so tempting so hard to make final choices! Louisa looked after us so well and it was lovely to catch up with Eric and Attila. What a lovely continuation of the Christmas festivities?

First time visiting here and it is safe to say this place exceeded my expectations. The atmosphere was warm and christmassy and the staff were all so friendly and helpful. For starters I had the arancini which was exceptional and I highly recommend. My friend had the maltagliati for her main and wow the flavours were amazing I couldnt help but be jealous. But my contadino pasta was just as flavourful. The service was fast and our server hope was smiley, friendly and very attentive. She was able to recommend us great dishes and wines to create a great experience. Will definitely be back on my next trip to edinburgh.

We had the set Christmas menu. Unfortunately it was very disappointing. The main course was tepid and it was lacking in presentation, almost as if they couldn't care. The desert was also very underwhelming. Very expensive for a very poor quality Italian fare.

Avoid! None of us will not be returning to this restaurant. Unfortunately we had a terrible experience at Contini George Street restaurant after being excited to try for the first time. Booked a table of six guests and two children. Everyone’s food was cold/ underwhelming on both courses. 3 plates of food had to be sent back to kitchen as stone cold and tasteless. On one starter a piece of hard plastic object was found in cod mouse starter. One staff member did apologise for this. 2 main dishes at our table had to send back. Staff were visibly annoyed after us highlighting that issue with the starter and just avoided our table. Therefore struggling to order a second round of drinks, so we only were able to have one drink per person the entire time we were in the restaurant. Really disappointing food all round. Can’t comment on the desserts as we were not offered to see the menu. Majority of us left hungry, biggest waste of money. We asked for a highchair when we arrived and was given one that the safety straps did not work so we were unable to use, staff did say they had another one but never actually brought it to the table so the child had to sit in there pram at the end of the table that didn’t quite reach. Do not recommend!

Overpriced. Food not great. Bread with a tiny bowl of olive oil to share! Not even balsamic vinegar. Starters underwhelming. Presentation sadly lacking. The main meal it look like the food was just slung on the plate. Would not recommend.

The place is lux and christmassy.The staff are so kind. The atmosphere is chill amd quiet. We had pasta Olivia, pasta with yellow fin tuna(I think), a ham thing starter, sorbe and chocolate cake. The food I chose was good and beautiful, but not so great taste for me. Probably I should have chosen differently.

Bit overpriced in my opinion. The food was good, but feels like you’re paying more for the ambiance. The bathrooms were very funny, with an Italian language course playing over the speakers.

Wow……. Is the first word to describe this place. This incredibly stunning building wrapped in Christmas decorations makes this a MUST VISIT place this Christmas. Slightly on the pricy side however totally worth it if you are looking for the perfect date night spot! Or even a place to enjoy food with friends. Staff are incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. We had Andrew who was very helpful and lovely to talk to as he suggested wines. Definitely an asset to the restaurant!

Beautiful place! Only thought people were cold since a lot of people kept their jackets and coats on. Ordered a polenta with mushrooms which was nice but the spinach gnocchi with Gorgonzola which my friend ordered was even beter! My dessert was pear with meringue, something I normally wouldn’t order, but it was really nice! Overall experience was good, food was good, service as well

Some of the slowest service I’ve seen. Took 10 minutes to get a server to start and another 25 min (not joking) at the end when asking for a check. Food was great though.

Food was really nice, but not better than surrounding restaurants to justify higher prices and smaller portions. Inside the building is absolutely gorgeous, awe inspiring, but we visited on a Sunday night and the atmosphere felt a bit flat.

Great atmosphere, the restaurant is very calm with an intimate atmosphere. The service was excellent, the servers took great care. We also ate very well, the cuisine is original and very tasty. It really is a must-have, very appropriate for a romantic date.

We walked in tonight, waited at the front to no avail. Walked to the bar. Lots of empty tables on one side, busy on the other. Bartenders looked and ignored us. Waited a bit, then we walked in and asked for help. Someone did come asked us if we had reservations, we said no. They went back in the restaurant and when they came out, they told us they couldn't take us. Wouldn't go back if you paid me. Horrible treatment.

Het eten was super lekker, ze hadden verse ingrediënten en dat was zeker te merken. Heerlijk! Wij werden geholpen door Kasia en Lucia, zij waren beide er vriendelijk en behulpzaam. Ook was het super mooi ingericht. Ik zou dit zeker aanraden!

Myself and my Husband had a lunch at Contini restaurant on Tuesday the 15th of October and at the time I didn’t complain as the lunch was for our wedding anniversary so I felt at the time it would spoil the day . I was going to leave a review on tripadvisor but I thought that they should get the chance to rectify the situation first but I haven’t had a reply from them. The main issue was that I was extremely underwhelmed by everything that I had except the tiramisu . I had the Burrata to start with which was ok but tasteless and the cold fennel was extremely unappealing and I was really disappointed in it . My Husband had the Arancini which were better than mine and we both had the Orrechiette with the sausage which was very gristly and the sauce was very unremarkable too. I ordered focaccia and was given 3 strips of cold slightly stale focaccia with no herbs on top which was what I was expecting. As I said the Tiramisu was nice but by husband didn’t enjoy his Gelato. Altogether We were extremely disappointed with the meal. We dine out a lot in Glasgow so I know great food when I eat it and I feel that it was all style and no substance . I am a positive easy going person so feeling so strongly about something to complain . The restaurant itself is very stylish but the food had no substance and is grossly overpriced .

Onions in the food were not listed on the ingredients. Since it had a lot of onions, I would have expected that. If you don't like onions, it's a shame to eat.

We decided to try the Piccolo menu and it didn't disappoint. It was Wow and amazing value, it allows you to try different dishes. We are currently watching Stanley Tucci searching for Italy and this made us feel like we where back in Italy with all the amazing ingredients😍 We then finished off with the best Espresso Martini! Special mention to our waitress Hope who was lovely.

I booked a table here for my girlfriends birthday, service here is incredible! As a fellow hospitality worker, I can recognise great service and this place has that if nothing else! Special shout out to Hope for making our experience here amazing!

The important parts of Contini - the food and staff - are really great. Unfortunately, big old bank buildings stuggle to transfer successfully to other uses especially if you paint everything grey and keep everything minimal. Stylish but the effect was like eating in an enormous, cold and, as it turned out, very expensive bathroom. I fully acknowledge the costs of running such a venue on George St but some of the pricing left a lingering unpleasant aftertaste.

Great experience..retaining a welcoming Italian family run feeling within a former banking hall. Sensible menu not large but sufficient choices. Price reflects location and ambiance. Service was good and pleasant staff were efficient we were not hurried despite Saturday night being busy. Some may find the noise levels given building scale a little high for conversation but this shows popularity.

Beautiful setting, lovely staff all with pronoun badges (very helpful!) Who were welcoming and chatty. Food was amazing as a really god treat but we had gone for the set menu and found out they don't run that over fringe time. So we spent about 4 times more than intended on lunch.

I got a lovely “Contadino” pasta which was perfectly cooked and reminded me of my month abroad in Italy. Very nice atmosphere and servers. We were served by Aisha who was very caring and explained the menu to us. Overall a very good experience and I would highly recommend coming here to anyone who wants to have a nice Italian meal in new town Edinburgh.

Yeah, 3 stars due to service just not being nice. Very little attempt at friendly banter with a group of 8. Overselling on side dishes when it wasn’t needed. No interest in repouring expensive wine or asking if we wanted more bottles when we finished first ones before main course. Food was not bad. Vibe was not really existent- these guys are phoning everything in and it shows.

Definitely a great place for breakfast and cocktails. Waiting staff were brilliant.

Pretty disappointing experience. We passed by the restaurant in the afternoon to book a table for 4 for the same evening, and where told we would be in the main room at the back, that is a really nice place. When we arrived, we were placed in a small corner, close to a curtain through which staff were continuously passing, with a limited view on the dining hall and close to open windows that proved to be difficult to close when I finally asked for. About the service: staff where very friendly but we had two waiters, one of them not really aware about what the other had done. The wine came quite late, and so did the coffee. The food was excellent, and so was the Negroni. But I really have the feeling that we were parked in a corner. We could maybe have left (there was no other proper table available), but then good luck to find a place at 7:30 PM. So, rather disappointing.

Ate outside, the tables are basic plastic right on the asphalt so the atmosphere was just ok. Food was okay, not bad but nothing notable in the other direction either. Service seemed a bit off. They forgot my dessert so I got it after I had already finished my pot of tea.

We were looking forward to visiting this restaurant as we read the reviews and the decor and ambiance is lovely. We were quickly disappointed as staff could not confidently recommend wines. They seemed understaffed as we waited quite a while for refills on water or requests from the table. Food was just ok - nothing that blew us away. Just an overall disappointing experience.

Santosh was the best server. Kind and attentive and gave us samples of wine to try before the bottle. The atmosphere was beyond beautiful. I’d come here for a few drinks. Food was ok. It wasn’t the best but Santosh helped make it better with his positivity and great portions of parmesean. Service was easily 10 out of 5 stars and worth coming for a dinner.

massivlely overhyped tbh - table of 9 - no one seemed to love any of the food.. small potions, overpriced and didnt really taste of much.. some dishes were completely cold... waitress assured a vegan that her pasta was cheese-free.. after eating, the guest realised it wasn't. barely an apology- really poor service, bad way to spend £60 each

Excellent cuisine, excellent service

The food was okay but very simple for this chic place. The music doesn’t fit in the beautiful building. You’ll expect acoustic music but the music is with a bouncing beat. It is also very loud inside. Way too expensive for what you get, but it’s also in the middle of the city so it’s not very strange.

Just home from an incredible meal at Contino. My partner is a critic/ reviewer and so we are lucky to eat at some of the best restaurants internationally and as a result we are difficult to impress. I just can't say enough nice things about this place, the food was excellent and thoughtfully created, the quality of the ingredients was clear as was the skill of the chef/s and the service was good. What was particularly impressive was the value, we both had 3 courses and a couple of glasses of wine each which came to about £56 per person. The 5* establishment we ate at yesterday, just round the corner, was literally double the price and the food was nowhere close as delicious. I would not hesitate to recommend and I will be back.

The venue is very nice with high ceilings, however, I went straight to the toilets and they were absolutely disgusting - each toilet bin had overflowing sanitary bins and toilet paper everywhere. Seemed like a totally different venue to the one upstaits. I informed, what I thought was one of the senior members of staff, who barely acknowledged my piece of information. The service from the rest of the waiting staff was very good, however, the £22 dish of gnocci was severely underwhelming. The 6 muscles laid on top was the best part, as the rest was rather tasteless.

Excellent staff and pleasant atmosphere but food very underwhelming. Fish was clearly frozen with texture like cotton wool. Pretty tasteless apart from the cherry tomatoes. Not exactly presented with love.

Great venue, very impressive on the eye. Bit pricey for what you get. But good food we'll presented. Good wine list. So why not 5 stars? I ordered cheese for desert, from the menu, and they didn't have any!!!! An Italian that has no cheese!!!

This is probably my 4th time at Contini, so probably long overdue for a review! Always such a good moment with fresh food, many of the ingredients sourced from Italy. It should be one of your go to places when in Edinburgh: simple, fresh and tasty.

Very beautiful and evocative place in the former hall of a bank. I'd say 80% Italian menu, there are some slightly Scottish-style reinterpretations but that's normal. Attentive service and suitable prices.

Went here for a work dinner with a client and it was delightful. Staff were really attentive and checked in on us regularly. The food was delicious! We shared three starters (Salame, Arancini, Burrata) and some focaccia. All of which were so nice. The Arancini were my favourite. We each had a main: Branzino, Chicken Milanese and Maltagliati. The restaurant was very nice but is quite pricey but good for a nice treat.

Quality food, but no atmosphere as everyone outside enjoying the sun

One of the best Italian restaurants in Edinburgh and the perfect choice for a special meal or date night! The restaurant itself is in a gorgeous old build with high ceilings which is very grand, and in summer they have a beautiful seating area on the street for cocktails and nibbles. The menu changes regularly but it’s all fresh and inventive - there’s beautiful touches such as mint in the cocktails from the owners gardens. The staff are all attentive but not obstructive and take time to explain the menu. Their cocktail menu and menu are both extensive and also change frequently, meaning there’s always something new to try! I’d recommend this place to locals and tourists who are looking for a real gem in the city centre. You won’t be disappointed!
