Just ate the must tasteless tomato soup and even worse Silverside sold as a sirloin steak in the bar at the Grand Hotel Brighton. I thought the sirloin steak tasted poor quality, joined at the table by two butchers and all three of us agreed it was silverside sold as Sirloin l. Unbelievable

We had Sunday lunch 09/02/2014.First we wanted a pre lunch drink in the bar as we were waiting for friends to arrive. There were no seats for 4 people as all the tables were set up for afternoon tea.Lunch was very disappointing. The roast beef was more than over cooked not freshly carved and would have soled a pair of shoes! There was a poor selection of puddings, all served with ice cream. After lunch we went through to the bar for drinks.Guess what .No seats.Afternoon tea still in progress. What a disappointment. We won't be going back.

So slow with the food that the lights were out and the disco turned up before we finished dessert. Sat down at 8pm, dinnet served 9.30. Too slow for the money. And too slow for your own disco apparently.

This Restaurant is in the Grand Hotel and we dined there on our first night when staying in the Hotel. We had been told the food was excellent and perhaps the a la carte menu is better but, as we were a large party, we were told that the chefs would not be able to cope if we all ordered from the a la carte and the fixed price menu was very disappointing, although two people in our party did order from the a la carte menu and said their food was very good.. We were told later that the Waiter should not have told us to stick to the Fixed Price "shorter" menu so I would not want to say that the Restaurant is "not good". We didn't eat there again during our short break so cannot comment on the a la carte food. Maybe it is much better than we experienced. The setting is lovely and the service, given that we were a large party, was acceptable.

Afternoon tea is worth the money. Enough sandwiches, scones & pastries. Service very good. Seating was quite uncomfortable, armchairs aren't ideal as you can't reach the table when sitting in the chairs, you have to sit on the edge of your seat to reach your tea etc. making your back ache. Would also be nicer to have a stricter dress code, we saw others in jeans & trainers rather than smart casual

'The Grand Hotel', is this a play on words with reality? My family and I came here only for a new years day lunch and we didnt not stay but somthing must be said. As soon as we got there and had checked in we made way to get a drink at the bar. We sat there for ten mins infront of the bartender's very eyes and nothing was done or said by him. After a while we asked him if we could kindly have a cocktail list and we were answered with 'Im making some at the moment, im too busy'. These cocktails are £8.00 each and there were six of us, you would.have thought they would have at least tried to keep us for our money? Wrong. I work in Customer Service and I would be.embarrased to talk to a customer like that. This was disgusting, such bad bad bad customer service. With that we left the Grand without even having a drink and went to the Metrapole, so very much nicer and better value for money as well as lovley staff! Better than the old smelling, run down Grand. You shant be having our vustome again.. we come every year. Thanks.

visited Sunday 16th December for a family birthday. When we booked we were told it had to be 2.30pm as there was a large party in at 2pm. Arrived on time and were promptly shown to our table. Drinks orders were taken quickly and arrived quickly too. We ordered our food and the starter came fairly promptly. We then had an hours wait for the main course to arrive, because they were busy. The manager apologised but it didn't change the fact. When the food finally arrived - the beef was terrible, fatty and tough (and 1 slice). And for a party of 6 we had two small bowls of veg to share - 1.5 roast potatoes each, 1 small bit of parsnip, 3 small carrots. Pathetic. We ordered dessert and again had a massive wait. The manager did offer us free coffee but we had spent 2 1/4 hours already. At £20 per head this is not a cheap Sunday roast. We will never return to what should be Brighton's flagship Sunday roast. Poor food quality, although nice presentation and service was lacking. If you knew there was a big party in you should either have not taken my reservation, or hired more staff,

If possible, book a table in the conservatory section as if offers magnificent sea views, framed by the two piers. The food is good, the service is good, but it's the atmosphere that really delivers. Dining at The Grand is like returning to a bygone era, and the faded grandeur of this Brighton landmark, adds to the charm.

Having last stayed at the Grand in December, when one of the meals we had was really good fish and chips in the bar, we decided to repeat the experience, even though we weren't staying there this time.Last time we had beautiful fillets of fish in a light crisp batter with a paper cone of delicious chips, together with mushy peas in a small dish and tartare sauce. At about £12.50 a head, we thought this was good value for an upmarket version of fish and chips. This time we were given about three small goujons of fish in soggy batter which were inside a metal cage. This made it very difficult to eat. The cone of chips seemed to contain fewer chips, which tasted as though they had been re-heated and were also soggy. The mushy peas were of extremely runny consistency - more like a dish of liquid - and everything was luke warmWe expressed our disappointment to the waiter who said he would pass our comments to the chef, but we felt that the meal was not worth the money we paid and we will not be repeating this experience next time we stay at the Grand.

We've stayed at the Grand on and off for 20 years for special occasions when you want to be split and eaten usually in the restaurant. There has been a general decline over time but now is nose diving into ordinariness. Shabby chique is what the Grand presents but the restaurant is very very ordinary from it's cheap looking menu to it's annoying habit of charging extra for bread and petit fours. I want to feel cosseted and spoilt when there and am prepared to pay for it but not in this manner

We stayed in the hotel for five nights at the end of August 2010 and had intended to eat in the restaurant everynight after we'd put our toddler to bed since we knew the baby monitor worked there. Problem was that the restaurant just didn't feel indulgent enough for the price tag. Upon arrival, no warm bread or amuse bouche. Instead, a very basic menu. I went for the pea and mint soup, my husband the asparagas. Both were very tasty. Warm bread would have cost an extra £1.95 per person. For the main course, I ordered the sea bream with side salad and my husband the wild boar sausages with mash. Although we didn't order additional veg, I had anticipated some veg on the plate at the very least to decorate the dishes. Nope. If you want veg, it's £2.95 per pot. My bream was okay, nothing exciting but nothing wrong with it. My husband's sausages had a nice meaty taste but the casings were very tough and rubbery. HIs plate literally had three sausages and a spoon of mash on it with a bit of gravy and that's it. My husband ordered a large glass of wine with his main, the one the chef recommended. Came to £14 for a 250ml glass. This seemed expensive and the wine list starts at around £30 for the cheapest bottle. We didn't bother with pudding, but my husband ordered a coffee. It was okay but not a chocolate in sight. Petit fours were an additional £1.95!! The hotel location is good and it's worth booking a conservatory table with sea view if you can. The service was okay, can't complain and the food was above average but far from memorable. The only issue was that the prices signify an expensive experience that should feel indulgent. But it's not indulgent when you need to order every treat as an optional extra. Meal came to over £50 for 2 starters, 2 mains, a coffee and a 250ml glass of wine. There are much better options available along the road. Try Stakis, the greek restaurant 100 metres away, near the Hilton or Jamie Oliver's Italian which is a similar price bracket to Kings but much better. On a separate note, the breakfast in the same restaurant is excellent, second to none with some excellent selections.

We (my partner and I) ate in The Kings Restaurant as part of a dinner, bed and breakfast package with the Grand Hotel.Upon being seated we were not informed of the specials, or that the 'Romney Marsh Lamb' had run out. Which was a little sad, as that is exactly what I had wanted. It was only when ordering that I was told that I could not have it. To my surprise, the same thing happened to couple that came in after us.We waited some time for a jug of tap water, despite being asked by three member of the staff. We ordered wine, and when the waiter arrived with the water, he filled two glasses with water and took the other two away - only to bring them back less than sixty seconds later. The wine its self was good. We went for a £35 bottle, which proved to have a slightly challenging cork for the waiter. Nonetheless, the wine was of a good standard. The food was amazing. For starters we had capparchio of beef, and griddled asparagus; and for mains we had sirloin steak, and calfs liver. For pudding I went for sticky toffee pudding. Compliments really should be given to the chef, everything about the food was exactly to our liking. We heard a couple on a nearby table complain to the restaurant manager that they had waited 27 minutes to pay, and had asked for second bottle of wine that did not arrive. Other mumbles of a similar nature could also be heard. When it was our turn to pay, the bill came to £85. As De Vere give you £27.50 per person for food as part of the dinner, bed and breakfast package, we only has to pay for the wine. We explained this to the waitress, who seemed to understand, but did not understand initially that we had not opened a tab to the room and wanted to pay there and then. She returned with the 'to pay' bill of £35. I duly put £40 in the case. The waiter took the case, only to return to discuss again that the bill was £85 - dear oh dear. The change was so slow to arrive, that we chose to collect it when exiting.Over all this restaurant has amazing food that is good value for money, it is a shame that the service detracts from it (we would certainly recommend if you have the time and the patience).

If it's sunny, if you can get a table right at the front of the conservatory, and if you have time to sit and watch the world go by, this is a good place for afternoon tea. Order one set tea between you - two of us couldn't possibly eat it all and at £25 it's a bit steep - and a pot of tea for the rest. The tea itself wasn't too bad despite being via teabag, and the sandwiches, scones/cream, and cakes were all nice enough. Our waitress was sweet. But if they won't respect your request for a window seat (you'll have to book ahead for this; we did but they still failed to record it and we had to wait around for the manager) and they try to put you in the dark back room then it's not worth it - wander out, find a cafe and experience another side of Brighton.
