Stayed here for two nights. It is easier to list the bad points only there weren't any. Exceptional find for the price and facilities. There is a bus stop right outside for buses to Gloucester, Ross on Wye and Hereford so I left my car in the car park. Behind the hotel is a copse with paths leading out into the Gloucestershire Way and ideal for a before or after lunch/dinner stroll. Just thought of one minor issue, the stairs up to the bedrooms (which face away from the road) are a bit steep but straight, well lit, hand railed and negotiable by most. Great stay!

Arrived on a Friday (4.30pm) for food expecting the kitchen to be open, however was told food not available until 6pm. Waited and ordered and our choices came quickly. The Lasagne was full of oil and hardly any pasta, the meat was so minced it reminded me of the sort you used to get in a tin. It was awful. I did enjoy the garlic bread and the salad ! The language being used in the bar area (by customers) was quite distasteful and uneccessary. All in all after a long day travelling my opinion of this pub is far from my last visit when living in Gloucester.

After having chances upon the Kings Head 3 weeks ago, my mother in law decided she wanted to make a 50 mile detour on our way home from her birthday day trip. This was a great choice. We received a very warm welcome from happy friendly staff and despite it being reasonable busy, we were not rushed into ordering our dinner. When our dinner arrived (only about 30 minutes) it was hot, very tasty and plentiful. The whopper burger certainly lives up to its name and the burgers were juicy and cooked perfectly. The lady behind the bar could not have been more helpful in explaining about the desserts etc after our main meals and when they arrived, once again they were hot and very very tasty. The toffee sponge was happily chowed down by mother. We shall without doubt be going back here in the future.

Truly awful, I had a ‘Classic burger’ which was so far from classic. A very thin burger, a bit of salad in the dry bun, no relish, no mayo, no pickle. Not a classic you’d be better going to a burger van in a lay-by down the road. Not a place to visit unless you like lay-by food

It's such ashame that a nice layout pub with a play area for children is being run the way it was. Had a BBQ rib with a friend of mine and it was the worst food ever. How ever they cooked the ribs was really bad. We received the food like 2 mins after ordering, so most likely microwaved. You know how you get a packet of ribs from lidll where you have slimely bit at the end of the packet well it was like that but microwaved and then that slimely part was just dumped on the top. The salad wasn't fresh. Well at least they cooked the chips well. They advertise Sunday roast mon-fri like dead cheap, summit like £4.99 so if anyone ever visits there that only strikes alarm bells. Just visited for Sunday dinner of a family of 9. Glad we booked as they were very busy understandably due to the perfectly cooked roast dinners and great value for money. This is not our first visit and won't be our last. We come all year round to eat either indoors in the freshly decorated bar/restaurant area or to sit in the sunshine in their large garden with plenty of play equipment for the children. The bar is well stocked with a large range of beers, spirits, wines, soft drinks, slushies etc. The well thought out menus which has something for everyone from roast dinners, steaks, pies, fish, huge burgers which are to die for and the lighter bites of sandwiches, wraps salads etc. Some thing for everyone. We always manage to get something for even our picky eaters of the group as the staff are always happy to change things on the meals to help. Nothing is ever to much trouble. Love it here as the staff are always welcoming and friendly and we never wait long for food even if they are full and busy. Highly enjoyed today and can't wait for our next visit

I can't fault it at all! Proper home cooked roasts with 4 veg, roast and new potatoes, Yorkshire pub, stuffing and 2 different meats! We've visited many times and tried all sorts from the menu from Sandwiches, steaks, curries and their top notch burgers.....Heaven! They have just recently redecorated too! The place looks amazing. As for the staff, again faultless! They didn't stop the entire time we were there and still gave first class service. And to top it all off the puddings were die for! You can get a good, basic meal here at an extremely reasonable price. There are 2 and 3 course special offers available, and also a roast on weekdays at an unbelievable price! If I had just one small criticism, it is that I am personally not a fan of salad and gravy together on the same plate! On the occasions I have been here, I have only ever seen a single member of staff. She serves the drinks, takes the food orders, delivers the food to the table, and is there at the till at the end for payment. She certainly keeps very busy! Perhaps the fact of having this one (and very efficient) multi-tasking lady helps considerably in the extremely reasonable pricing of all the meals. There is a decent selection of drinks here too. Also a very large car park.

.....keep driving, find a Tesco and grab yourself a £3 meal deal, even that would beat this place. Booked a table for 10, turned up, playground looked great for kids, nice views, horses....then we went inside! The 1st thing we saw was a poster advertising mid-week roast for "only" £3.99. Why we didn't turn around and leave at the point I do not know. As the posters and menu suggested, this is a 'cooked from frozen' kind of a place. No chef needed, just someone who can hit defrost on the microwave, followed by cook! Really poor quality, but you cannot expect anything else at the prices charged. You cannot get a decent meal for a couple of quid, end of! The setting and location could make this place a real winner, but as long as it caters for the 2 meals for a fiver, with free dessert and rola cola customer base, it will never gain any kind of decent reputation.

Visited with my partner and our 3 kids. Haven't eaten anything this bad for a while!! Burnt cardboard beef, over cooked tasteless Yorkshire pudding, one anaemic roast potato, 2 boiled potatoes, peas, watery boiled cabbage, carrot and seventies diced swede...yes diced swede!!! The plates were so small that the kids couldn't cut their food without it going everywhere and my glass of wine tasted like vinegar. I may as well have just flushed £50 down the toilet, it was that bad. To add insult to injury, when I told the waitress that it was disappointing to say the least and that the beef was inedible, she ignored me and just walked away. Not really sure how the place stays open to be honest. I wouldn't even rate it as one bit I have to.

We were passing and the place looked quite nice. Plenty of parking and a pleasant area to sit outside. The inside is a bit gloomy and could do with updating and a good deep clean. I was a bit put off by the £3.50 Roast Dinner, even at catering prices, that is very cheap and cheap usually means mass produced and microwaved. We ordered and found a table in the large dining room, which we had the to ourselves, as all the other customers were sitting in the sunshine outside.Sadly, our table was slightly 'sticky' indicating a lack of cleaning. The food arrived in good time and was well presented with a good sized portion. I'd gone for Steak & Kidney Pie, Chips and Veg. Chips and veg were fine and fresh, but the Pie was out of the microwave and although hot outside, was less so in the middle. Also the pastry was terrible, like soggy cardboard. My son had Ham, Eggs and Chips, served with Salad and Peas. Again, a good sized portion and quality was reasonable. He enjoyed it and cleared his plate.Overall, I suppose not too bad if you avoid anything that needs long cooking, I suspect the microwave is used more than the oven and £26 for two, with drinks isn't too expensive these days. Staff were pleasant enough, but could spend a bit more time cleaning instead of chatting.Worth calling in I suppose, but not good enough for a special visit.

Went past this pub on way to Ross and saw the sign saying Roast £3.50 Monday to Friday so decided we'd call in on way back, which we did. Just a nod from the young man when we arrived and went to order but who told us the offer wasn't on as it was a bank holiday (perhaps sign should be removed on a bank holiday?). Therefore we chose alternatives off the menu. We ordered one ordinary burger and a pulled pork burger with a choice of three sauces. We weren't asked which sauce we wanted and were just given barbecue (not an issue really just a small point). The meals were okay apart from loads of chips were just the crunchy end bits so were left. When plates were collected we weren't asked why the chips were left. Place needs a bit of an update, although lovely hanging baskets make for a nice outside and it has a large car park. For what we had it was slightly overpriced so all in all won't be rushing back.

Stopped off today for a bite to eat . Food was prepared in good time and was well presented. Lots on your plate and tasted really good . Chicken fajita was very tasty and was cooked to perfection . 16oz rump steak cooked to the way our guest wanted without any complaints tasted great . The large burger was indeed large and tasted great . And finally the kids menu had a very happy 7 year old especially as she is fussy with her nuggets , but loved these, fresh chicken I may add. The beer is definitely not watered down as experienced in some places. The staff was very polite and came to check all was ok which it was . The prices are very good considering the amount of food you get you'd think they was robbing themselves . Highly recommended and will definitely visit again .

Called in with my wife whilst passing by on a Sunday drive and had the Roast, most tables were reserved but we were offered the only free table in the restaurant, the food was great value, tasty and served piping hot by very polite servers.Would call again without hesitation, as we left the restaurant all other tables in the bar area and restaurant were full so obviously a very popular place.

We happened to stumble across this restaurant on the way home from Gloucester and we were glad we did!We had an excellent Sunday lunch (options of pork and beef) a drink and a desert for £10 each. Couldn't fault it! The dinners were beautifully hot, plenty of veg and all tasted very good. The staff were very kind and polite and did a great job.The only problem for us is that we live about 60 miles away or we'd be back again next Sunday.

This pub looks clean and well presented and offers home cooked food. What they don't say is everything comes out of a microwave apart from the salad, every part of the meal was stodgy. The waitress said she was sorry and walked off.Do yourself and favour and avoid this place for food, shame.

........a meal so dreadful that both courses were sent back.We paid for our 2 drinks and left. What could be that bad....? Ultimate Nachos to start. What actually came was a bowl of broken crispy bits, I'm thinking supermarket basic range tortilla chips, slathered in tomato ketchup, yep that's right tomato ketchup, topped with melted cheese.Main course, we both opted for the chicken and bacon in brioche bun. The chicken was described as chargrilled breast with rasher of sweetcure bacon. The chicken was breast, but highly questionable that it was freshly cooked by char grilling. I suspect it was cooked much earlier and reheated. It takes a special skill to overcook a chunk of chicken, to the extent its so dry it was genuinely hard to swallow! Also in the bun with the very dead chicken, really delicious wedges of raw onion. ..and the really good bit, the plastic pot with 1000 island dressing!!Felt a degree of sympathy for the lady behind the bar, it wasn't her fault. Will not be back.

Visited before & pleased .today we visited mediocre welcome.have to admit two fussy.diners. We ordered chicken fajitas & veg (no wrap) & rare steak with no chips, chicken arrived had bacon in it (not mentioned on menu) friend doesn't eat bacon as makes ill, steak arrived with no mushrooms (even though included on menu)chicken returned politely & was told they didn't know it never mentioned bacon on menu, also that he had last chick breast (when first dish obviously was made of all parts of chicken) he ordered steak in its place & asked if he could have fajita style, barmaid /waitress said she would ask, the steak arrived (not fajita style which he wasn't told couldn't happen)but by this time I had eaten my meal & other guests obviously locals were made aware of our complaint..not professional..no one made an attempt to ask if our meals were ok after they had been delivered. Steak however (mine more med/rare than rare) was very tasty..silly mistakes spoilt our lunch today..disappointed to say the least

Visited the Kings Head for lunch on Saturday and found the experience to be average. There welcome wasn't as good as expected. The food was okey however the Cannelloni I ordered was burnt and was stuck to the bottom of the dish. Was happy with the portion sizes but the taste wasn't that good.

Been here before and didn't expect much. The decor is dated and it is frequented by bus loads of tourists coming back from the Forest of Dean. This does, however, mean it has a massive car park. The food arrived and looked quite ordinary, however the look belied the flavour.Love taste, really well cooked, down to earth food. Good sized servings too.Really pleased we went. Will no doubt go back.

Popped in for a bar snack on our way home from school shopping. Only stopped for a quick lunch.I had a Chicken Wrap which was nicely filled with fresh crispy salad and a good load of nice chicken. My son had fish finger and chips agin lovely size portion jumbo fish finger. My daughter had lasagne which she polished off and would have licked the plate if I had let her!!!.Well what was a quick stop ended in 3 hours and meeting friends as the kids had so much fun on there fantastic play area and fussing the horses and goats.I will be meeting friends there again later in the week as the best part is the kids never once complained that they were bored

We were traveling from Lampeter, Wales to Oxford and this was a convenient place to stop for a bite to eat and drink. They were open for breakfast so had a choice from the hotel menu. Good selection self-service buffet, tea and coffee, and a list of items cooked to order. Our full English breakfast was served promptly and was very good. Staff very friendly and price reasonable. Would visit again if in the area.

We had a very distressing experience when myself, my husband and 3 of our friends visited this pub on 7th August 2016.Four of our meals arrived together; we waited for 5 minutes or so and then enquired if the 5th meal was on it's way. We noticed that while my friend waited for his meal to arrive, another 3 tables were served their food but after a few minutes more our remaining meal arrived. However at the first mouthful of his meal, my friend found that it was cold in the middle. He called the waitress to explain, she then took it back to the kitchen. Around a further 5 minutes later, the heated meal was brought back to the table - no apology was given even though by this time the rest of us were just finishing our meals. When myself and my friend went up to the bar to pay our bill as we were leaving, the young boy who had taken our order asked if everything was okay and I told him what had happened. The older lady behind the bar took offence for some reason although what I said was factual and said in a calm manner. She said that they had done everything that they could in the kitchen to get through a busy lunchtime and then got quite verbally aggressive, saying she would call her boss.l, for what reason I am not sure. Our waitress then came over and said that her boss was not in a good mood and told us to 'be warned'. The boss lady (I have no way of knowing whether she was the landlady or not, but it was implied by the staff that she was) then arrived and leaned over the bar towards us in a very threatening manner, just a few inches from my friend's face and screamed and swore at us. I was stunned! My friend then took a few steps back towards our table to check that the rest of our party had actually left the pub and a local man came over to him and asked what he was doing, saying if you're going back there looking for trouble...... I interrupted him and told him that the landlady was out of order for talking to us in that way. He said that he hadn't heard the earlier conversation, just the landlady screaming at us. I repeated that she was totally out of order. He followed us to the door - we were very glad to leave.I certainly won't be visiting here again.

We have passed this large pub/restaraunt many times on our way to the Forest or Wales but never stopped before.Having failed to find anywhere serving food after 2pm on a Monday we stopped at the Kings Head by chance, very large dining areas but we were only one group of about four other customers. The Kings head has a varied menu which includes a full roast dinner (veggie option available)for £3.50! I had the steak and kidney pie which was delicious, proper old fashioned pub grub.very generous helpings + the usual children's menu.OK so it's not gourmet style and the decor is a little dated but it's good affordable food.

Always stop here for lunch on the way to my fishing breaks on the Wye. Friendly pub and often full of locals, a good sign. Traditional pub food, tasty and filling. Beer good. Phil Vickery shirt on wall a good sign.

You cannot ask for better value for the money. Good traditional, home cooked pub food. This is not a fast food outlet so expect a short wait. Only one small criticism, the TV in the background is a little loud.

Although a short drive/taxi into Cheltenham this jewel of a find was brilliant. The cost of the room is worth every penny (and more) !! Clean and modern they provide a good nights sleep followed by a nice fresh full English breakfast to set you on your way.The staff welcome you with open arms and after being there for just short a time we felt we had known them for years.Already booked to go back next year we would recommend this Inn to anyone travelling in the area. Thanks for making us welcome. Top Class

Food very good, staff very friendly. We visit quite often and will continue to do so. Recommend the faggots & lasagne also Marg's bread & butter pudding. The accommodation at The Kings Head is an ideal place to stay. Great place for children with a safe play park, they also have horses and goats which the children love.

My husband and I tried to get tea and cake yesterday afternoon. I am disabled and struggled into the garden to be met by a very unhelpful man who simply said 'its lunch' in response to my husband's polite query! When he enquired further, the response was: 'I'll get you a menu but if you just want tea, there's a tea bar over the road!' Needless to say we didn't bother or wait for the menu! Proprietor should remember it's the customers that keep businesses like this going and respond appropriately! Like another reviewer comments: Bring a packed lunch and enjoy the riverside beauty!!! The person we encountered was really rude and unhelpful!

Been before and was disappointed , left it a while hoping things had improved but sadly still very poor quality. The fish was thin inside the batter, and had zero flavour . No flaking or creaminess to the fish at all just tasted of nothing really. Not a big chip fan anyway but had a small scoop but they turned out to be dried out brittle short what we used to call scrumps and were normally thrown out . But anyway they served them and charged handsomely for them . Needless to say they went straight into the bin . Most disappointed as it used to be top notch , with nice lemon wedge and paper wrapped . Now the carbon wastage via cardboard boxes and paper and plastic is diabolical . Sadly won't bother anymore , but good luck anyway. Cheers Fred

Very welcoming, accepts dogs, good English food, very reasonably priced and lovely service. Inside it’s a bit worn down and dated but didn’t bother us as it had everything we wanted.
