Feels very much like a franchise type of place, staff pleasant, nothing flash. Might go again if in the area but wouldn’t rush

After a fantastic walk up Roseberry Topping we called in for lunch. I had toad in the hole and my wife had a light bites game casserole. Both absolutely delicious , good quality and value . The staff were friendly and the sun shone.

On the plus side, the Winter Break Offer that the Inn Collection group offer is fantastic. Unfortunately that's the end of the pluses. The bedroom was cold with the radiator being on a timer and not on during the day. It turned out that it didn't come on at any other time either. I complained and received a short lecture on the global price of energy. However, I was re-assured that they would fix it, but they couldn't manage. The toilet wouldn't flush, but they did manage to get it to flush slightly...each number 2 was a worry! But, worst of all was the breakfast. It was served, eventually, and was either cold, underdone, overdone or wrong. On one morning I was given 44 warm beans (get yourself a portion and count them), but at least they weren't straight out of the fridge like some others. I will never visit there again.

Sunday lunch gathering of family to celebrate my father in laws 89 th birthday . My father in law is in end of life care and has severe mobility issues. There was 12 of us meeting for Sunday lunch . We had a leisurely lunch , service very slow to be fair but we had a lovely chatty time celebrating his birthday. Our total bill was nearly £300 over 3 courses so we certainly splashed out . Imagine my horror to discover a parking ticket for £100 .!!! We stayed 7 mins over the 2 hours allocated from the car park !! 7 mins !! my disabled father in law has end stage Parkinson’s he’s very very poorly . He can’t be rushed . So 3 courses , 2 visits to the toilet and so on and we’re expected to do this in 2 hours are we ? Understaffed and slow service too . What is this ? A bloody farce and racket to extort parking fines from innocent disabled people . You should be ashamed of yourselves , this is no way to treat people and is blatant discrimination. Hang your heads in shame . AVOID AVOID AVOID .

We visited here as we were staying locally. When we arrived, there were only a handful of other customers. We ordered food, our children’s dough balls eventually arrived after around 40 mins and they had been deep fried! Oozing in oil and inedible for our toddler. Our mains arrived, they sent the wrong pasta dish for our daughter which I’m certain was returned to us with the meatballs fished out. We struggled to find the pasta in the vast amount of sauce. Sadly, due to the lengthy wait with two hungry children, nor my husband or I enjoyed our now cold food. We will return to the area but certainly not to eat here.

Absolutely atrocious, not enough staff for a start… Arrived at 02:00pm didn’t get our starter until 03:30 and meal at 04:30. It’s just NOT ON.

We were told it would take 45 mins after ordering. 75 mins later we had very poor meals delivered to our table . A burger and chips which cost £15 was a bad choice as a few chips in a basket which were mainly just bits were lukewarm and burger was one of the worst I’ve ever had. £16 for chicken tikka masala which again was sub-standard. Find somewhere else to eat where you’ll enjoy your meals.

An inn collection hotel we used the winter break offer and couldn't fault the fab value for money .Great parking which is free as long as you validate it at the bar . Easy check in ,our room had everything you could need . Our evening meal was delish as was breakfast. Really enjoyed our overnight stay

We travelled 45 minutes for an incredibly disappointing experience. 1. I sat with my winter coat on the entire time because it was so cold. I ordered a cup of tea to warm myself up because I couldn’t stop shivering. 2. The couple that was with us, and ordered their food about 1 minute before we did (we went to the bar together, and were served one after the other), got their meals well over an hour before we did. 3. Our meals took over 1.5 hours to arrive. Other meals kept coming out for other diners, but not ours. The pub was almost empty by the time our food came. 4. When the food did eventually come, and after we’d asked for an ETA twice, two pork dinners came out first, with no vegetables or sides. 10-15 minutes later, the other two meals arrived but they were the wrong meals and had to go back. The vegetables eventually arrived for the first two pork dinners which we sent back because they were freezing by this point. 5. The food eventually arrived. By this point it was almost 2 hours after we ordered. 6. The parking instructions were ridiculous and are clearly designed to catch people out. We asked the staff but they didn’t know anymore than we did. 7. The cauliflower cheese barely had any cheese on. It was just giant florets of cauliflower. 8. The food itself was mediocre, although my Dad said he enjoyed his pork dinner, although there was hardly any pork. 9. There were 6 of us, across 3 households. All had travelled to meet up and eat together. I genuinely feel terrible I arranged the get together at this pub. It was so disappointing. I went in November 2024 for Sunday dinner and it was lovely (although still freezing). I don’t know what has happened.

It’s all over the place. Even though the food was microwaved, it took well over an hour to come out. The same happened with the desserts—microwaved with a 50-minute wait. Some food was inedible, fried by the microwave, making it really tough. Portion sizes were inconsistent and laughable. There was little organization, no cutlery, and no one serving. It felt more like you had to use your own initiative to get cutlery, have your plates cleared, etc.

Felt rushed and staff not friendly really , waitress doing her best , only one that seemed happy to serve us. Thank you. Booked for 8 of us and plenty ordered food and wine - place was quiet lacking in atmosphere , seems few reviews not happy with this place! Won’t bother returning.

Went in already had booked a table took 30 mins to get sat down. No table service. Took 1.30hours for food once ordered. Food on floor table not cleaned. Once people had left they did not clear up ( there was not many people in there either). Had ran out of most food on the menu. We told them we had a broccoli allergy so when they did not have most of the veg we requested. They piled the plate with broccoli. As soon as we walked in it smelled of fish. Once the food had come we had hard meat undercooked chips and the nana said “it was the worst meal of her life” (she is eighty and bearing in mines she was in an orphanage where they did not give good food back then).

A drive out for a nice Sunday lunch.NO. Our Sunday lunch came on cold plate very cool food . Veg came the same l way.. Gray .Well I've had hotter cup of tea. The roasties I'm shure were from day before . My wifes beef was under cooked red. And realy chewy. We complained and thd lady took it away and come back and said She tried cutting it and viild not. We got a refund but yhats not the point . The. Chef should never of sent that food out . Never again

Have been coming here for years and have always loved it. However today we went for lunch and ordered the chicken skewers with tzatziki. The chicken had a funny taste and we later realised parts of the skewer were pink, the chips had changed to chunkier chips which tasted undercooked and barely any tzatziki on the dish either. We left our meals and went home very disappointed. Not sure if it’s a new chef or what has happened but wasn’t to its usual standard.

Called here on way back from coast on a Monday lunchtime but wished we hadn’t bothered. The place was very quiet. Started off well with the pil pil prawns but then it went downhill. My burger had bits of gristle in it, limp lettuce and two slices of thick tomatoes. It was totally tasteless even after adding two sachets of tomato sauce! I was happy to see that the advertised thick cut chips were actually skin on fries but was soon disappointed as they were virtually cold, so I left them. My husbands pie was ok inside but the pastry was very thick so he left it. His mashed potatoes contained two surprise chips! A regular customer on the next table sent her food back as she said the quality of the food was not up to it’s usual standard. No one came to ask if all was well, which my husband suggested to the lady they should do so, when he went to pay the bill. The lady knocked the price of half a pint of Guinness off the bill in compensation! Very disappointing for an Inn Collection pub. Will not be returning!

Looks beautiful but we ordered two desserts that were basic, thrown together with cheap ingredients and hugely overpriced for what you got. Ice cream had something odd in it - hoping I don’t get in. If it tasted okay and was prepared properly, fine, but it wasn’t. Someone split something on the floor and numerous staff members walked past it without addressing it. Dangerous and comes down the training - or lack thereof. Staff pleasant enough but sadly service a tad stilted. Won’t be back. They need a proper manager and a proper chef.

We had initially only planned to stay for a post walk drink after climbing Roseberry Topping, but the food being served looked so good, we decided to grab a late lunch. There is a good selection on the menu, I ordered the hot-shot parmo from the light bite menu and it was amazing! The portion size was really generous, it came with the tastiest home made chips and a garlic dip that was to die for! As soon as I saw the sticky toffee pudding on the dessert menu, I knew I would be making room for it, and it did not disappoint! Got to be one of the best I have ever tasted, the sauce was so good, I didn’t want it to end. The venue is so pretty, the gardens are full of so many beautiful flowers and plants and the interior is so homely. The staff were friendly and helpful too. Highly recommend giving this place a try, I will defo be back.

Disappointing visit for family Sunday lunch. Meals were fine but 30 minutes between bringing the first and last of our main courses. Really disorganised and unresponsive to our simple request to be served at the same time. Could be a great venue, but must work a whole lot harder on customer service

Lovely Parmo at the Kings Head. Nice chips,Salad and a portion of Onion Rings. Followed by as good a Sticky Toffee pudding that I’ve tasted. Thanks very much The Kings Head. We will be back.

We stayed two nights and had breakfast both mornings and an evening meal. The help yourself cold buffet breakfast consisted of a choice of cereals, yogurt, a little fruit selection, croissants, toast with accompaniments. The hot element was chosen from the menu with a good choice, very generous portions and beautifully cooked. In the meal we chose the venison moussaka which was delicious.

This hotel has a lovely setting right under Roseberry Topping. The menu is quite extensive but not vegetarian or pescatarian friendly When I asked if the mussels main could be without the bacon unfortunately they couldn’t as the sauce was bought in! Chicken Parma was ok Chips were good Suggest a re look at the menu to cater for vegetarian and pescatarian visitors

We did not stay in the hotel but the bar was lovely, warm and welcoming. The young men on the bar etc were friendly and provided great customer services. However, the food was very expensive for what was served. Prices were quite high so expectations were high and when our food came we were aghast at the small portions. The food was tasty but not much of it! We ordered flat bread to bulk up at a price of £2 each, which we thought was a good price but when it came it was a small wrap bread!( not even average size!) It was the type of wrap (used for sandwiches cut into pieces for £2 for one of those ! So £6 for one piece each for 3 slices of wrap bread! Very disappointing leaving still hungry. We wondered if this is why the pub was almost empty all evening.

A great reception even though it was several months since our last visit. a much better room (though the last was ok) Talk to them about rooms. Food was good. Excellent location. Wonderful staff ,Looking forward to our next visit which we hope will be sooner rather than later. ps. good idea for those staying three nights or more.

Just back from one nights stay with family and cannot fault anything. bar staff friendly and helpful. We were on a winter's deal, accommodation was lovely and meals were well presented and delicious. Wouldn't hesitate to book again

Lovely pub, food was wonderful here a few years ago, now poor quality. Def not worth the money, sadly like microwave meals.

Recently visited again midweek for lunch. My Wife chose Wild mushrooms on toast, a piece of cheap white bead, not sourdough, mushrooms not cooked. I chose Haggis rarebit toast, cheap white bread thrown on a plate with some dried up stuff, absolutely awful! We have had a few meals here and have come to the conclusion that unless it’s fish and chips or scampi and chips, the rest on the menu isn’t worth ordering including the Sunday roasts which are certainly not worth the money.

Food was terrible. Worst fish and chips I can remember. Batter was soggy with hardly any fish inside. Staff didn't seem bothered.

We were looking to eat at a warm, cosy pub and chose here. Big mistake, it was absolutely freezing and the food was pretty poor too! The broccoli was so chewy my son could've been sick! We should've realised that something was amiss, when we looked around people were sitting eating with their hats and coats on! The radiators were stone cold eventhough it's November.

Visited with two siblings and sister in law for a late Sunday lunch. We arrived at about 4 p.m., place not very busy, checked Sunday lunches being served, chose a table, ordered drinks and then food at bar. Two beef, one pork and one turkey Sunday lunches. All generous portions accompanied by a large dish of assorted vegetables, including cauliflower cheese.we then forced ourselves to choose from the extensive pudding menu. Thought it was a nice venue and staff very pleasant and attentive.

Excellent food, friendly and efficient staff but disappointed by the lack of choice of real ales on offer. Website says regular guest ales but there was only Doombar on the pumps

Went for Sunday lunch due to good reviews and recommendations. This was for family members birthday. We are not complainers as a rule so this is unusual for us. Sunday lunch was overpriced for what we got. Beef was bloody and soaking into mashed potato sister had to have it replaced for better cooked if this is how meat is served normally this is noted on menu for people's choice of taste. Vegetables cold by the time they arrived were hardly cooked never had to saw a carrot before and cabbage was bitter and hard to chew looked like it had just been put in water or steamer and taken straight out. We all ate what we could not to upset the family member who's birthday it was. Didn't complain at the time due to pub being very busy. To keep your reputation I would advise taking the reviews seriously because it seems others have found the same issue.

We came on a busy bank holiday Monday so made some allowances for the fact on the kids menu there only the chicken goujons and fish & chips available. Also the food took 1hour 30 to be delivered . The portion of the food is small . Kids fish and chips ( the fish was no bigger than a chicken nugget ,only 1 piece given ) I got the toad In the hole at £16 I expected more than 3 sausages sticking out of a Yorkshire pudding ( obviously off the Sunday ) the mash tasted like smash and a very watery gravy ( not the onion gravy as described) . My partner got the fish and chips main meal . Although he said it tasted nice ,again very small portion for the pricing. . . My son got a side of chips as no other suitable meal was available . These came in a small metal cylinder ( again for the price, very small portion ) . . . Personally I feel this place only does well due to the location and visitors to Roseberry topping, who have worked up an appetite

We paid just over £50 for monkfish and prawn curry which arrived with only four prawns and no monkfish and toad in the hole which was three burnt sausages and a hard yorkshire pudding. Our dessert was three half scoops of melted ice cream. This pub is one which we visit fairly regularly but after last nights expensive experience we will try alternative pubs with serve good quality food.

A very tasty lunch after a very wet walk. Staff were welcoming and efficient and food was delicious. Good value too and plenty of drink options available. Clean and tidy surroundings.

Firstly this pub is in a lovely part of the country. Nestled at the base of Roseberry topping it is the perfect place to walk up the hill, then get some food or drinks. It's located just outside of Great Ayton and has plenty of parking. Secondly this place is super dog friendly. They even have a separate menu for them, plus free biscuits at the bar. The service was second to none and the selection of food on the menu is good. However this is where my review becomes negative. The food..... I mean, the food is ok, just your generic pub grub. But the prices are a little on the steep side. I settled for the "Kings Head Burger" and when it arrived I was a little underwhelmed. A small thin burger which was dry as a bone on a small bun with a handle of fries. It tasted good, but was in no way great value. I've bought food at other pubs for the same price and had huge burgers. Not good. The tempura seafood starter is probably the only way to go if you want it. It's a lot of fried seafood and for some bizarre reason , there was a courgette. My partner had the tempura seafood platter as a main and by the end she had decided never to eat anything in this batter ever again. Way too much and again way too expensive for what you get. So, finally would I recommend this pub. Yes. The only downer is the food's price point which way exceeds what you get. Everything else such as beer selection, service, building just meets my expectations.

We've visited many times and always enjoyed it. Today (Fathers day) we took Mother/Mother in law. We've both lost our Dad's and wanted to treat her. Firstly, the mains were brought out before the starters. Starters, very small but ok. The Sunday roasts which they charge £16, £17 for are unbelievably small. We had two roast potatoes each, a very small bowl of veg between us. 3 bits of broccoli and 3 bits of colliflower between two of us. 6 slices of carrot and there was some cabbage in there but hardly any. The food was cold. The young girl serving had no customer service whatsoever, she looked desperately unhappy. I did complain and got a oh so sorry I know it was cold reply! So disappointed as expected so much better. I expected the copy and paste reply to all complaints....don't bother

When you go to the KINGS HEAD you have got to ask three questions.Are you comfortable having up to thirteen dogs in an area where you are eating,Are you happy with a promotion where all children at certain times eat free (Sunday Lunch) so it is not a restaurant but a kindergarten and if you order a bog standard Sunday Beef Roast are you expected to say, RARE MEDIUM OR WELL DONE to very arrogant staff who appear friendly till you complain.Meal was rubbish,got a refund and wont visit again.

Great location for Roseberry topping. Lovely stay. Great nights sleep. Bed were so comfy. Food was good. What I did miss was a little fridge in the room as I had my dog with me I didn't have anywhere to keep her food fresh. Would recommend this stay for a few nights.
