We were staying in Cubbington for the weekend and had phoned to book a table for dinner. The person who took the booking didn't tell us they weren't doing food, but luckily the owner of our B&B suggested we call them again to check. The pub wasn't doing food and when we asked them to cancel our table, they told us they didn't have a booking for us anyway.

This used to be the best pub in the area and we were disappointed. Upon arrival, the owner greeted us in a flap with, "there's no availability for food, no food!" We told her we had booked a table and she said we should order our food immediately. There was a woman who seemed be acting as a maitre d. She made us feel quite uncomfortable with her gushing and smiling and fussing around us. Two of us ordered roast beef which was tough so we didn't eat it. The gushing woman took our plates and asked if it was ok. We told her the meat was tough. As we were leaving, gushing woman announced she was going to the kitchen but would be back. We looked at each other, baffled. Realisation hit when we were outside that she was expecting a tip. The atmosphere in here is awkward. The owner scowls from behind the bar as if we were not welcome. We've been coming here since the 1970s. Such a shame...

The Gentlemen's lunch group met today at this quaint village pub for this months get-together, most of us remember its beguiling character and superbly presented ales from 20 or more years ago. Today, still the quintessential village inn, with superb craft ale selections served by a talented bartender, but also, the food, prepared by Sharon, was universally regarded as superb across all menu selections. The Chicken Tagine looked superb, the Beef and the Chicken pies were stunning with their light puff pastry toppings, the substantial Scampi platter matched the Giant Yorkshire puddings with sausage and gravy. Both the gammon and home cooked ham dishes were huge and very tasty. Having a micro brewery based just down the road supplying some of the ales made the lunch one to savor for weeks to come. Will be back with any excuse and probably with new visitors to share this experience. Well done all at Church Hill.

Called in after a long walk in the country fields. Something about this pub that just says "home". Cosy, warm, friendly and welcoming. Even the dog was allowed in. Not tried the food yet but from what I saw coming out of the kitchen, I will be participating very soon. Above the ordinary pub food that's for sure. Yea the place needs a little TLC but where else would you find little vases of fresh spring flowers on each table. Somehow this quaint "worn out" little pub, opposite the village church, just has that homely feel and to keep that feeling, a re-vamp would kill it. Stay oldy worldly Kings Head, you are a pleasure to visit. It's like going back in time in here and it's certainly a welcome break from the fast modern pubs that seem to dominate today's lifestyle

We kept getting overlooked as the bar staff served people who came after us. Even after being served and complaining there was little reaction and no apology. We then asked if they were still serving food and despite it being early evening they said they has stopped serving meals & we took them at there word. We were then obviously surprised to see that meals kept appearing? We again complained to be informed the meals were ordered earlier. Clearly you need to be part of the Posh Local Clique and outsiders are not welcome here.

As the leader of our walking group (of retired friends) for the day's walk, I was responsible for finding a pub from which to start our walk and to provide a good meal at the end of it. We prefer non-chain pubs and the Kings Head at Cubbington fitted our requirements perfectly.During my conversation with the landlord to reserve a table, he explained parking arrangements in the village and offered to let us order our meals before our walk so they would be ready on completion of it.Our group chose different dishes from the Main Menu and, without exception, all agreed that the meals served were of a very high standard. The portions were very generous and the service was cheerful and efficient. The chips (potato and sweet potato) were exceptionally good and the whole Kings Head "experience" was an excellent conclusion to an energetic walk.

What a nice village pub, probably as traditional as you get these days. They managed to combine, without any one activity dominating, not only the bar but also pool table/dart board in one area with regulars watching a TV football match, and a few tables offering a good range of pub grub. A few real ales on tap too. Four of us only wanted a light lunch - soup, a prawn cocktail, a shared meze platter, coffees and drinks. All were judged good. Pleasant location too opposite the immaculately kept village church. A few tables outside as well if the weather's up to it or you're a smoker.

I came with a friend for a nice, quiet, mid-week meal. It was reasonably busy for a village pub on a thursday but by no means full, so we ordered a drink and sat down to peruse the menu, which was surprisingly extensive, considering we had been told everything is home-made. Having made our choices I approached the bar and asked to order food, only to be told that 'we don't have any tables left'. I pointed out that we were already sat at a table and asked if we were in the wrong seating area but was then asked if we had 'booked for food'. I replied that I wasn't aware that was a requirement and was then told that because I hadn't booked to eat, they wouldn't be able to serve me food, as they already had 'lots of orders in' and 'too many people waiting to eat'. This was at 7.45pm on a Thursday. We finished our drinks and left. Highly embarrassing, as I live in the village and had brought a friend from out of the area because of the good reputation the pub has. Hadn't eaten here for a few years and won't be in a hurry to do so again. Very, very disappointing.

With the Kings Head being our local pub living in the village, we are a bit biased! But with that being said, you will always receive a warm welcome from staff and us locals that drink and eat in there. It's always a buzzing and bustling atmosphere on a Saturday evening. We also went to the 2014 NYE party, with live music and free nibbles put out for every table. There is a wide choice of reasonably priced drinks, plenty of seating, TV for sports, pool table etc.Dogs are also very welcome - ours always licks his lips when he sees Sharon as she always gives him a little treat. Water bowls outside and inside for them. The food is all home cooked, which is very good and very reasonably priced! I've eaten in many labelled 'gastro pubs' and I think the food here is much better and very generous portions. Also the menu isn't just your typical 'pub grub' there are some surprising and refreshing choices on the menu. It's always worth booking in advance as it does get busy and booked up quickly! Sunday lunch is also very good. You really can come here for a very good meal. There is seating outside overlooking the pretty church and also in the courtyard at the back. It's a great place to stop for a refreshing drink if walking around the surrounding fields.Of course, we go all the time but it is definitely worth a trip if you have not been before!
