We both ordered red bream from the specials board and were served a small overcooked fish with soggy skin on a colossal bed of half squashed grey-green marrowfat peas with a small bowl of flaccid skin-on potato in the shape of fries. No cruet and nothing seasoned. As it was put down we just felt disappointment. Like receiving a school dinner. We've never complained about food before and should have, but ate it and left. We were asked what we thought but were too shy, apparently this was a new dish, I said that it wasn't what we expected, I should have said, yeah, don't serve this again! I'm only fessing up now because Google keeps asking for a review! I've been a few times before and the food has been great so I hope it was a one-off. Just unfortunate that it coincided with trying to impress my mother and expensive!

Lovely pub, staff were exceptionally attentive even though it was a busy Sunday afternoon lunchtime slot. We booked to guarantee a table but were held up as so had to call to advise we would be late for the booking - they were very understanding and accommodating. Dog friendly. We will return for sure.

Absolutely Superb! The team at the Stag hosted our wedding reception and provided the absolute best service and food we could have hoped for. We had 24 guests and we were all seated in the conservatory area. The staff were amazing but the food stole the show. Almost every single guest has approached me to tell me how impressed they were. We had 3 courses and all the food was served to everyone together and it was all hot and fresh. The pub had loads of staff on to help accommodate our party and they were all amazing. One of our guests even bought them all a drink at the end of the night to thank them! Beware the baked Camembert starter, it’s superb but big enough for 2 to share. The steak was easily one of the best I have ever had and all the puddings were or looked delicious and were all generous portions. I think Richard is new to managing the pub and he deserves such high praise. He was brilliant making sure we had everything and everything went to plan and on time. Karen who works in the office was brilliant keeping in touch with me in the weeks up to the event making sure we had everything we needed. The wine was superb, we had about 14 bottles between our party and the primitivo I drank was just perfect. We had a buffet for an extra 20 guests at 8pm in the evening and again it was just superb. We took over the conservatory area for the whole afternoon and evening and the whole event was a solid 10 out of 10. My new. Wife and I want to pass on our heartfelt thanks to the whole team at the stag for making our special day so perfect. Thanks from David and Tina xx

Visited as a guest for a family wedding. A lovely classic country pub/resteraunt with spectacular food and hearty portions that exceed their price point. The staff were attentive and friendly, and happy to accommodate requests fast and efficiently. I had a hearty mushrooms on toast, one of the best steaks in recent memory and luxurious well curated cheeseboard. Well worth making the effort to visit, and an absolutely essential visit if you are already in the area and looking for a quality meal.

We booked but then had to wait 40 minutes for the table and we had to go and ask what was happening . . We finally got seated and waited another 20 minutes . Our glasses were empty and no one even came and asked if we would like them re filled !! When they came to take our order they had no beef left !! By this time we had waited over an hour . Still didn't ask if we would like our drinks re filled . I had stop someone and ask them if we could have some more drinks . When the food came it was lovely but sadly we didn't really have time to enjoy it . We were not charged for the meal just the drinks which definitely was the reasonable thing to do . Would we go back . . Sadly no I was disappointed

Our first visit. It was chosen by others for a get together. I like the pub, proper old school country pub. The bar staff and servers were all spot on. Sadly I was driving so just water for me which was a pain as they had some good looking beers on offer. We had a table in the dining room which was great as a few of the group were having a serious catch up. The pub was just the job for that. We had a lunch, the food was ok, I can’t praise it more than that. I had belly pork - one of my favourite meals - somehow the rind had gone awol. The meal was ok, but not what I expected. My wife has sea bream which was a little over done. I don’t mean to be too picky because the good bits outweighed the not so good. I’d love to try the ales if I go again.

Prompt service in the pleasant surroundings of the dinning area of this lovely old pub. I’d like to visit in the summer to sit in their garden for a drink. As a vegetarian there was only one choice of main for me so I probably wouldn’t return to eat for that reason. It’s a shame that there is still lack of imagination about vegetarian food in most British pubs.

We were a large group and the food came out together and in good time which was great but the food was poor. Three of us had roast beef and it was so stringy and chewy. I was exhausted trying to cut it. Others had steaks which weren't much better and another had a crumble dessert which was rock hard. It's a shame as it's a lovely spot.

I asked if the chicken was free range. They didn’t know but guessed it wasn’t. So I opted for a vegetarian item. I asked if the peas had mint in them . They said they did. So, I didn’t order that item either. I ended up ordering a sausage sandwich. What arrived was ok bread with far too sharp red onion marmalade on it and three small cheap flavourless sausages. The whole thing was far too dry. Staff really didn’t care. The rest of my group said the food was “fine”.

Saturday night dinner with a couple of friends and from the get go service was slow & staff uninformed. Firstly couldn’t see our reservation - until we looked at the bookings & found it. Took 20 mins until we could get anyone’s attention after sitting down to order drinks - then came back to say no house rose (by this time the couple who had walked in behind us were finishing their starters). Then given bread which looked like the bake at home stuff from Tesco, served in an old baking tray. To be fair though, the olives we were given were good. Food came and was very average and green beans were very undercooked. Oh & they had no vinegar! How does a restaurant run out of a basic like vinegar! We all had a scoop of ice cream for dessert, but the quality was rather poor - the cherry could’ve been anything and the chocolate was rather anemic. Never mind we were having a good chat, so we ordered post dinner drinks - decaf normal coffee, peppermint tea & small glass of wine and were promised some biscuits to go alongside - yep you guessed it - coffee arrived as expresso, no mint tea of any kind available & the wine was delivered as a large glass - at £13.50! Manager looked rather embarrassed, but only took off the tea (went for decaf ordinary tea in end) and the coffee. All in all a really poor experience and will not be back. Really painful paying the bill of hard earned cash where the management clearly do not care about the customer experience. Save your cash, book elsewhere!

We walked from Leamington across the fields and wanted a nice pub meal. Initial impressions were good, friendly and good drinks service. We were told olives and bread were coming. There were three of us and we were given a tiny pot of 8 olives at most, next a metal tray with three tiny pieces of bagette which looked like it came from Tesco. My main was pork belly which was a small piece of pork drowning in a sea of liquid, overall it was tastless and lacked basic seasoning. Nothing like the photo on the website. My son's chicken was ok but overdone and just sat on a large paralell array of green beans which did not taste of much, chips were ok. My wife was ok with her fish and gave 6/10. Despite asking twice for strawberry my son was given chocolate ice cream. Overall an underwhelming experience. Maybe this is what happens late on a Tuesday but for the price this experience was well below expectations. People will say why not say something there and then, my family said not to as it can get even worse.

The Stag used to be one of the best country pubs around, sadly no longer. The service is awful, our party of 5 were forgotten about following our starter, we had to remind staff twice that we were still waiting, happily the manager gave us a round of drinks to apologise. I was not keen on the lamb, looking and tasted like it came out of a tin, and the veg was basic at best. The saving grace is the beer garden, would be great as long as you don’t expect good food and service, it saddens me to see how an old favourite has declined.

Real village gastro pub however the service is lacking as it is left for a young team to run lacking in hospitality experience. It is essentially bring the food out, flag for service (was very quiet too) and very different to a competitor such as The Saxon Mill. The food quality needs a front of house to match. 5 star review a year ago unfortunately now replaced with a 2 star review after visiting this year. Not sure what's gone wrong there (new management maybe?) but it's like going to a completely different place. 4 people in our group who had the steak said the cut of meat sub standard and tasteless. Previously multiple steak options which perhaps should have raised the alarm bells. One steak not cooked as ordered. Sent back and then brought back a few minutes later and asked if we would eat it anyway and take off the bill. No offer to replace it. 2 sausages and a blob of mash for £16. Think carefully if you have been here before it's changed significantly. Complaint raised with the waitress who had difficulty disagreeing with our feedback.

We booked a table on Sunday 19th November at 6.30 pm for a party of 7 and ordered our mains in prior to arrival at the request of the pub . We were lead to our table and ordered alchoholic drinks and water for the table to go with our mains. one bottle of sparkling and a jug of tap water . We had to ask twice for the water as it was forgotten . The dining area wasn't busy. Only two other tables occupied a family table was just finishing up when we arrived and table with a couple on . Several members of our party ordered starters which all arrived fine . Bearing in mind the mains were ordered in advance before we arrived. They didn't arrive together. In fact there was a 10-12 minute delay between the first main meal being served and the final one . I ordered all the trimmings expecting everything it mentioned on the nenu which included Yorkshire pudding and cauliflower cheese .I received neither Just a few undercooked potatoes. Carrots . Suede and a bit of cabbage with a smidge of gravy when I asked the waitress she mentioned something about those items not being vegan . I told her that I wasn't vegan and had not been asked by the pub whether or not I wanted items removed . If was just assumed . She then brought me out a Yorkshire pudding but no cauliflower cheese . I ordered dessert. Which was a winter crumble . It was served with the crumble burnt and the pub had clearly tried to scrape the top off before serving as there was very little crumble on top . Just a burnt light crust . The fruit underneath also tasted burnt . I informed our server that the desert was inedible she offered me another crumble which I refused as the inedible crumble had put me off eating desert . When the bill arrived I was charged for the crumble. Four of us have had upset tummies since dining that evening including myself. Were been several times before to this pub and have eaten our dinner there Christmas day and have never had an issue before. I'm really hoping last night was just a one off and not a sign that the pub has gone down hill .

Not much seating inside for drinking (most of its restaurant). Outside there is plenty of space and seats. We were on holiday in the area and were walking with our dog and the stag was on route half way round. What a find! The staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating. Very dog friendly too. The service was excellent and the food very tasty. A really busy pub and all staff very hard working and friendly. Of particular note: ollie, Beth, poppy and Tom. Not the cheapest but we have found this wherever we seem to go these days; the cost of eating out just seems to have gone up across the board. If I had to make any criticism at all, it would be lack of veg with the Sunday roast. We love lots of veg and good variety and had we not opted to pay extra for the broccoli and cauliflower cheese, it would have been a bit lacking in our opinion: a bit of cabbage, a few peas and about 5 small chantenay carrots to share. But not a major issue and would definitely not prevent us from returning. The warm apple cake was to die for!!! Would definitely return and had the perfect experience. The pub deserves to do well. Thank you!

Nothing was ever too much trouble. Our food arrived. 2 of us had "all the trimmings" whilst others chose the pork pie. The pork pie was amazing - really tasty! Everyone agreed their food was great, as were the desserts. So much so - I was unable to get any photos. Food was OK, but for what you got and the quality received the price was far too expensive. My partner and I have visited many restaurants for Sunday lunch, opting for the higher end ones. We had 2 x Sunday Lunches, 2 x desserts, a beer and a wine and it was £70. The wine itself was £9.50! I would rate the food as mediocre. I hate leaving negative reviews, but think the the pub needs a massive re-think and either charge the right price for the food quality/quantity or massively improve the food to match the prices.

Uncooked not rare as stated, poor table service. Having to ask for cutlery then again for napkins. Management and venue very good.

We used to drink in this pub when we were young but since moving away we've only been back once, and it's certainly changed! We called in to see if they had a table for Sunday lunch, and we were immediately seated. Lunch was OK, but the portions were very modest and the vegetables meagre and uninspiring. We both agreed that for a very 'average' meal, it was over-priced. We'd give it a miss next time.

We booked as a family of 8 for 4pm on a Sunday. Told on arrival that many of the starters were unavailable and they were out of roast beef, which was disappointing seeing as they serve food until 7:30pm. The food itself was very good but I cannot say the same about the service. We waited a long time between ordering and drinks arriving as well between starters and mains. Staff seemed uninterested and left our table for long periods without drinks or checking in, For the price I would expect the service to have been miles better.

Very pleasant outside area. Friendly and helpful staff. The menu needs to be more diverse. Tasteless ice cream and my food weren't great. Might give them another chance just because of the atmosphere and the staff.

Arrived to see Fawn On The Lawn open for the first time which was lovely. However after ordering our drinks they said they’d have to go inside and get them… which meant we ended up waiting even longer than usual! Not sure where our order has got to as we had to remind them twice. The actual pub was empty with just a few tables taken in the garden. It wasn’t busy. Then one of our food orders was forgotten. When paying, the lady who seemed to be in charge was making very loud, passive aggressive comments about a few tables behind the bar. The food continues to be delicious when it’s available but for the prices, we expect better service. This is just one example of poor customer service we continue to receive on an ongoing basis. It’s our local and has a lovely garden so don’t want to stop coming but please make things better!!!

We had a roast here today and my boyfriend and I who are both gluten free ordered GF specified pork and beef roast dinners. They came out and specified which were ours but the gravy must have not been gluten free because my boyfriend and I left feeling very sick. Dissapointing that they weren’t able to meet our allergy accommodations. The food was good but will be feeling sick for a few days which makes the food not worth it. To top it all off, it was boiling in the room we were in and had to ask 3 people to open a door before they actually did anything. Not a great experience.

Excellent and very attentive service & in our view, in the current climate, still good value for what were delicious roasts ( 2 x beef & 2 x lamb) . Accompanying vegetables were a very good choice as were the starter & dessert menus. Good to see the restaurant very full. It was nice to meet Ollie, the General Manager who was working there that day. Have been going there for many years & look forward to our next visit.

After booking the back function room for a Wedding for 2 days (the wedding day and the day before to 'set up') with less than 2 weeks notice we found out that they had double booked and cancelled on us. Has Nick the Landlord any idea what kind of stress that is going to have on any couples memorable day!? Have you any idea how hard it is with such short notice to find anything at all available. Most venues being booked up for at least a year! Thanks Nick, nice one. This was in July this year and moreover the only reason we discovered this total f**k up is because we phoned to check on the arrangements!

Long wait for food but it was busy. Thin chips were tepid and tasteless. Breaded chicken was ok. Lovely cafe and shop but food today let it down.

This pub is glorious. Jess, Adam and the staff team are the tightest of tight-knit bands. They've all got each other's backs, and new staff become part of the team and "get" the culture in the blink of an eye - it must be infectious! The beers are lovely. The food is home-cooked magic. In summer, the walled garden is a sun-dappled sanctuary from the bustle of life. In winter, the twinkling lights and open fires warm the soul. We love the New Bowling Green!!!
