Haven’t been here for a few years and after dinner tonight I’m assuming it has changed hands . The girl behind the bar is fantastic and I love the building but the food was yucky . I had the pork belly and it was inedible . A tiny square of overdone meat topped with about an inch and a half of inedible fat . I felt sick when I left . The shift must have changed and another waitress came over to clear the plates . I mentioned that the pork belly was pretty gross and to tell the chef . I asked when I went up to pay what the chef had said . She said he’d keep it in mind . I doubt she ever even told the chef . I’d never go back again .

My wife and I were impressed by the quality of the food and beer and even more by the welcoming and excellent service. This pub compares very well with any in the Stratford-upon-Avon area and is worth driving out to dine there. The village offers a touch of ‘old England’.

Disappointed, luke warm food very poor indeed. The staff were fine, but whoever was serving behind the bar was useless. Worst I've ever seen. It was Sunday lunch on a Bank Holiday weekend and the restaurant was empty. Speaks volumes don't waste your time or money visiting this place again until it changes ownership. Such a great shame because it used to be brilliant 🙄

We usually go for a meal at this pub when we are staying nearby. In the past we've really enjoyed our meals. However, on this occasion it was not good. I am not a complainer. I once told a French waiter the wine was bad to which he unblushingly replied ‘I Know’. And I have never, till now, walked out of a pub leaving my drink. I have known this pub over many years, having been brought up nearby. Revisiting the area, I stopped twice in two days. The first day all was well. Asking for a light lunch I was directed by the dark haired bar staff to the small empty bar at the front of the pub. I noticed that every table had a bottle with ‘Reserved ‘ written on it. The bar was totally empty. I questioned whether I could sit at a table, and was told there were actually no reservations and could sit where I wished. I returned the next day with my wife. I said we wanted just drinks and was again directed to the front bar, which was again empty. A fair haired lady served us in that bar. Again all the tables had ‘reserved’ bottles, but the fair haired bar lady did not indicate that any tables were actually reserved, so we sat down to enjoy our drinks. Five minutes later we were interrupted with ‘ You can’t sit there, that table’s reserved. You’ll have to move. This was commanded across the bar in full hearing of the party that had just arrived. The implication clearly was that we were at fault, and the tone was scolding. It was not made clear to which table we COULD move. There was no expression of apology or regret. We left our drinks, and the bar, feeling we had been subjected to a Basil Fawlty experience. Before leaving I queried the manner of the bar lady. She offered no explanation of why all tables were labeled reserved when actually that was not the case: she claimed that she had not told us that the table we chose was actually reserved because she did not see us sit there - 5 feet from the bar. In true Fawlty fashion she blamed us for not asking which table was free. Some positive suggestions: do not blanket describe all tables as reserved when they may not be: if you do so label them, direct customers to the tables that are NOT actually reserved: if customers mistakenly sit in the ‘wrong’ place, explain quietly and request politely that they move, apologizing for their inconvenience. The lady in question had a good command of English, but may not have been a native speaker. We had noticed that her manner with other customers seemed unusually direct and abrupt. Perhaps some training in customer friendly phrases such as ‘I’m very sorry but..’ ‘ Would you mind…’. Etc would help correspond with the welcoming atmosphere the notice at the entrance wishes to encourage.

Having been here a few times and had lovely food and a warm welcome 5 of us went for Sunday lunch yesterday. As a previous reviewer has commented, when greeted we were pointed in the direction of our table without menus or a promise of a drinks order being taken. There were only 2 people serving food and drinks, the pub wasn’t overly busy but as we walked to the table we heard a table of 8 who had seemingly only received half of their meals chasing the rest of their order, so it wasn’t boding well. A couple came in after us and had a similar welcome. After waiting for 15 mins we finally had our drinks order taken, but still no menus. After another 5-10 mins we received our drinks and menus. We then waited for another 20 mins before someone came to take our order. Only 2 of us were having starters (soup and a prawn cocktail) came after approximately 15 minutes, and once cleared we then waited for another 35 minutes before we saw our main courses which we had to chase. The couple who had come in before also had a long wait, although they did get their food a lot quicker than us. The sea bass was nice, but the roast beef was 2 very small pieces of meat which was luke warm, as were the vegetables. It’s a shame as we have enjoyed quite a few visits here, but yesterday’s will be our last as now reading some other reviews it wasn’t a one off.

The prawn cocktail starter was poorly presented and basic. As a family we all had the roast dinner, we all found that the roast potatoes were under cooked. The children’s portions were not a good size as they were small. The apple cobbler wasn’t a cobbler at all it seemed to be an undercooked version of an apple crumble. Very pleasant but inexperienced staff. Unlikely to return.

Having moved into the area we thought we’d try this local pub. Haven’t been here for quite a few years. We’d read the bad reviews but I know some people are picky! Should have listened. I rang at 6.00 & got a table for 7.30, was rather surprised as it was Friday night. I ordered fish & chips. It was undercooked on the outside & mushy inside which made me think it could have been cooked from chilled or frozen. There was no crispy batter it was completely soggy. Completely tasteless. Peas very strongly flavored of mint. Told the waitress who said she’d tell chef! At the bar I asked what single malt whiskies they had & no one had a clue what I was talking about. Selection of young waitresses were all very pleasant. Would not return & definitely wouldn’t recommend, such a shame as it’s a beautiful pub.

Jodie and the other wait staff are always so welcoming and friendly. Food is good but not outstanding any more - feels like other pubs have upped their game to the same standard now, whereas 15 years ago it was a really impressive menu for a pub. It's pretty accessible for wheelchairs with the additional support of staff to get up and down one small step to the restaurant. Considering the age of the building it could have been worse. I visited The King's Head with my husband for an evening meal. We were lucky to get a table as it was a last minute booking on Easter Sunday. Good sized car park led us to the rear entrance/exit of the pub. We were greeted by a friendly member of staff who gave us a choice of 2 tables. We chose one to the side of the pub just off the function room. I enjoyed a nice latte. Hubby had a beer. Straight to the main courses; beef Sunday roast for hubby and an Asian broccoli meal for me. The food was delicious and good sized portions, but... It was almost cold. 😬 Typically, we didn't complain but ate it anyway. It was all very tasty regardless of the temperature. But it would doubtless have been nicer if hot. I followed my main with a "deconstructed" sticky toffee Sundae dessert, which was ok but I wouldn't have again. Definitely not worth the £8.50 price tag. The member of staff who looked after us was lovely. She gave us faultless customer service. A nice place to eat, drink and be merry.

Such a lovely old building, very friendly and welcoming staff, with one particular lady who couldn’t do enough, carrying my heavy case upstairs (thank you). The true highlight was dinner in front of the log burner, with the best steak pie I have ever eaten! I’ll remember this place for a long time and will definitely be back!

Lovely pub in a great location, walked on the public footpath over the fields from Bidford on Avon

I called for availability on the day due to another establishment letting us down for Sunday lunch. The guy I spoke to kindly managed to fit us in with a booking time. We gladly accepted and was at the premises within 15 minutes. They looked after us fantastically with awesome service and food. They had a large party to attend to, but we never felt as if we were put aside. I can not rate the golden cross highly enough for rescuing our Sunday lunch. Thank you.

Still a great little pub. The actors bar is the best room as it has loads of pictures of actors going back many years. I couldn't name most of them, but it's much better decoration than having a rusty french bike nailed to a wall. The drunken duck was an excellent pint and the pies on the table close looked amazing.
