after starting a new job i needed somewhere to stay for 3 days for a trip to my new head office. The Kings Arms were perfect. i booked a deluxe room out the back as i also had my 2 dogs with me. The road out the front of the pub is very busy but the rooms at the back were just great. quite, very clean and perfect being able to let the dogs play in the garden. Breakfast was just lovely. I liked it so much i have re-booked for another work trip

We stayed here overnight during a visit to Coggeshall. Aware the pub is on a busy road we had booked a newer room at the rear overlooking grassland. The pub shuts on Sunday evening and is also cheaper to stay here then which suited us! The room was next to the side passage from the pub and we felt very overlooked by passing customers as there are no net curtains or blinds. The room itself was clean and comfortable and we heard little from the road overnight. The air conditioning unit was effective and quiet. The ensuite was poorly planned and fitted . The mirror was too low and the shower doors let water out onto the floor. Although quite new some paint was already peeling and it won't age well. Unfortunately we were badly bitten by mosquitos during the night as we had had the window open during the evening. Not the pubs fault obviously but again a net curtain may have reduced the invasion. Breakfast was excellent and plentiful and staff were friendly. Coggeshall is a lovely area and this was a good place for a stopover.

My friends and I booked at the kings arms for a meal to celebrate my birthday. It was quiet and quaint very very clean. we sat in the main bar to have a drink in front of the open fire before our meal . We were moved into the restaurant section of the pub and we chose our meals of a not so huge menu which made a nice change but the selection was brilliant. The meal was so delicious and exceeded our expectations. It came out in a good time and Didn’t have to wait too long courses . All the staff were attentive and so friendly and kind. We cannot wait to go back. Definitely worth a visit

We stayed here last night for a little couples getaway over the festive period and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Very smooth from start to finish. Had a few emails exchanged with Kings Arms via the booking.com site as we had accidentally booked a twin instead of double and also requested to see the reduced menu on offer for our stay. On both occasions they responded promptly and were helpful. When we arrived we had a warm welcome and was showed to our deluxe ground floor room. The room was clean, nicely decorated and everything had been very well thought out such as instructions for the heating, hairdryer in the drawer, extra pillows in underbed drawers, a mini fridge and even some emergency sanitary supplies for women in the bathroom - all nice touches. We had a lovely view from the window and the room was soundproofed very well especially important as near a busy road which we barely heard. Very comfy room no complaints at all. We had some drinks in the bar in front of a cosy open fire. Everyone was so friendly - even the locals all made us welcome which isn't always the case in more remote locations but they all smiled and passed chit chat with us. The bar staff were really pleasant and friendly. We ate dinner which came promptly and was nice. The next morning we had breakfast included which was cooked very well and tasty. A lovely stay and we would definitely return.

We booked for a Sunday lunch there was four of us and we were all very happy with our meals and the service. The roast rib of beef was absolutely delicious one of the nicest roast dinners I've had in a long time, a generous portion of beef, perfect roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and a lovely selection of perfectly cooked veggies. We were all so full we didn't have room for dessert. We'll definitely be back for a return visit !

Had a lovely meal with friends at this charming pub. We received a friendly greeting upon arrival from the bar staff and were then looked after by the attentive waitress who ensured that we had a relaxing evening. When enquiring about the dairy free options on the menu I was impressed by the willingness of the chef to adapt my order to ensure it had no milk. The meals were freshly cooked and piping hot and were very filling. I’ve driven past this pub many times and never had an opportunity to visit but I’m glad I did. Well worth a visit if you are passing in the future.

Ordered a meal that was described as “ample” portion, I.e. a large meal was offered on the menu too. Went for the ample portion, it was just about a starter portion, and very over priced. Shame as the place is smart and well set up. Even more disappointing was that when we discussed our issue with the very nice waitress, the manageress did not even have the courtesy to come and speak to us. We won’t return!!

I just phoned to ask if you had a table available today and the man who answered the phone didn’t respond and after about 1 minute the phone cut off. So I tried to call again and the same man answered and said rudely we don’t serve at that time (the time I was trying to book for was 3pm) I have since checked on the website and you do serve food until 4pm so that was a lie. If you do not have any tables available just say that please, do not lie to your customers.

What a lovely place to stop for refreshment. We were travelling across country when quite by chance we came upon this fine establishment. On the menu was lamb shanks and they were great. Lip smacking good. My travelling companion had the chicken which she said was lovely. Fed and watered we continued on our way refreshed and in good spirits. I throughly recommend this great Inn.

We were attending a wedding locally, checked in at 1.30 and asked to put bags in another guest's room(from the same wedding) not given key as it was before check in time of 2pm. When we arrived back from wedding at 10pm, place was in darkness, with no obvious contact. Rang pub number to be told by landlord that we should have checked in earlier. I explained I'd been there at 1.30 that afternoon and no-one had mentioned the place closed at 9pm. Landlord begrudgingly appeared in dressing gown with keys. Then gave another guest from our wedding party the same treatment an hour later.

I was staying over for a conference nearby and needed a place to stay. Not having any experience of the area, I had read the reviews below and booked in. I didn’t realise I had booked a room above the pub until I had arrived but was able to upgrade to one of the new rooms which have recently been built. These are beautifully done with unrestricted views out onto a arable field making for the most pleasant morning and evening vistas. The sound of the main road is still audible but not enough to disturb you. With modern furnishings and a comfortable bed, it has made for a most enjoyable stay. The staff were very welcoming and very accommodating given I changed rooms and were very happy to answer any questions I had. The outdoor space is clearly cared for and it seems popular with the locals for food and drink.

I opted for the lamb shank cooked by mum who also brought out extra gravy the vegetables were also of generous portions. The kings Arms is a gem of a place and one I shall return to without doubt. My partner also enjoyed her veggie burger 🍔 It was a most pleasant lunch in the middle of a busy day.

Do not eat here. It’s a great “locals” pub if you’re local and stopping for a couple of beers after work but if you are coming here to stay and expecting good food think again. Starter and main sent back. Then left sat at a table for 25 minutes. The only person in the eatery area on a table. Eventually I caught the eye of a member of staff and presumed the kitchen was closed (20:30) I asked at 20:30 bearing in mind I was sat there for 25 minutes with no waiting staff tending to me or even acknowledging me. When I went to pay for my bill they said sorry and thought I was finished…. If I was finished then I would of settled my bill with you because you would have acknowledged I was was finished. Not ghosted me because I sent your food back… I chose this place because I was sick of premier inn and that lack of standard and quality… Yet here I am in the same place. I work away a lot and I’m just sick and tired of all this lack of decency and quality. Is it me? Am I wrong? Or am I expecting far too much from hospitality and “chefs” Or should I say microwave chefs 🤷🏻♂️ At least the chips were actually cooked this time. 5 different hotels and I guess this is the first one where the chips were actually cooked… What is going on in this country, I mean, seriously? Why doesn’t anyone give a sh1t anymore 😞 If you are a chef then you should love food. Love what you do and desire to see that “melt” on customers faces when they first bite into your food. We melt and make “that face” when we taste the most amazing food. No one cares anymore. Next time I’ll book premier inn and expect disappointment 😏

Similar experience to one of the other reviewers. Bedrooms were a little dated and desperately need a revamp but were functional. We did wonder at the exceptionally glowing reviews in the visitors' book! As we were going out for the evening we were provided with a key to get back into the pub after hours. After being charged on entry, my husband and friends should have known, because our double room, no 4 was a converted shed and a damp one at that, we did get another room after we complained the bedding was damp, however little did we know we wouldn’t get a wink of sleep with the heavy commercial traffic thundering past just outside our window! We were up at 4 am and exhausted. With no one around after sitting in the garden for an hour we left without breakfast that we had paid for. The owners refused a refund on the double room we never got and even hung up on me when I phoned to request it. The property bedrooms need double glazed windows for any chance of sleep. The odd thing is the reviews are great and we all felt tricked because something just isn’t right here........

The room itself is quite dated but functional, the shower room is very small and its quite a mission to have a shower, that was working fine with good hot water. The restaurant was excellent, however the noise of the pub and the constant road noise on A120 makes this pub very unsuitable for accommodation. Especially for me on rest.

We travel a lot and have stayed at many hotels throughout the UK but this has to go down as one of the most bizarre. The pub itself is a nice quaint old place with cheery staff and very nice food but that is were it it goes downhill....... We looked at the website and thought we would book a nice room in this lovely old pub to stay while visiting the area for a family function but on arrival and after paying £90.... Yes 90...,,,,, we were taken through to a musty damp well.....I can only liken it to a 1950s holiday camp chalet at the rear of the pub. Our garage would make a better place to spend the night as it does not have shuffling rodents, damp grey towels, sensor lights that pop on and off all night and a lot of traffic noise all night long. We have to say in all fairness that the breakfast was very nice but what a let down that awful shed out the back of the pub was. Some folk have given this a good review??? Can not understand it..it was simply awful in every way. Please avoid and stay at travel lodge, premier inn, or anywhere else.

In response to the comments to our earlier review, we did not say the food was good. In my opinion absolutely not!! I explained that, considering the price of the main meals, we would not ordinarily complain. That is quite different. It was very basic food but not completely awful. Having said that I do think the drinks and desserts were very over priced. The dog poo was in the area that has a children's slide. One was right at the bottom of the slide. That would be an area you would expect children to play. It was not just one dog poo but several . It was clear that the owners did not feel it was necessary to clean up the dog poo which had obviously been been there for ages. It was very clearly from the same dog which is most likely their own which they keep right behind the kitchen.

Stayed overnight at this pub and had a tasty Steak meal with Chips, Onion Rings, Field Mushrooms and Peas. Very enjoyable meal for £14.99 washed down with a couple of pints of a local Real Ale. As it was midweek the bar and restaurant were quiet, which suited me. The staff were friendly and helpful. Would happily return if and when I'm next in the area.

We met friends here on the 23rd December for a meal. I had a lovely starter of whitebait, then the beef cheeks for main. Both meals were so nice, and the mains were served with lots of vegetables which I love especially when it's brussel sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli served with a cheese sauce. They had a great selection of traditional puds, spotted dick amongst them, although I opted for their syrup pudding which was served with lashings of custard. Well done, good English food at a very reasonable price.

I booked one night at The Kings Arms based on previous Trip Advisor reports, and was delighted I did so. You name it...this venue gives it 120%. The publicans and staff are friendly and welcoming; my room was excellent, my evening meal (Lasagne) was served at my request in the main bar area and was a real pleasure to eat. At the Kings Arms food doesn't come in pre-prepared; all home made and delightfully so. The meal was served promptly, was piping hot and exceptionally tasty. I really enjoyed both the meal and the company in the bar all of whom included me in their conversation and light hearted banter. A sound night's sleep in a comfortable bed with NO outside noise to disturb me. Breakfast this morning was equally well prepared. All in all, my visit was a sheer delight and I will certainly be returning when next in that area.

The quality of the food was excellent and saved the evening as the service wasn't as expected. We enjoyed our meal but the young man behind the bar was inexperienced. Lovely traditional pub with a good menu and we recommend to give it a visit, we will again.

We passed this on the way to the coast and decided to stop for a break. The garden is lovely with a play area for the kids and dogs are welcome inside and out. While there we decided to have lunch. I ordered the chicken salad and i have to say it was lovely. The people are very welcoming and friendly, much better than stopping at a service station.

Not usually a fan of dogs in pubs personally, but somehow you feel privileged to be permitted to enter Sandy's domain.Astonishingly friendly pub with lovely atmosphere and staff. The lunch menu is limited but enough variety to allow a good choice and quality cooking.Main was a nice and well cooked chorizo and mushroom omelette with salad and chips, tasted good and ain't greasy. Was just about to leave when I saw the rhubarb syllabub advertised so just had to have that with a coffee afterwards! clean toilets tooMy only comment....no need for anything on top of one of the most delicious sylabbubs I gave eaten!

We called in for some lunch at this pub on the main A120 between Braintree and Colchester. It is one of those small old country pubs that used to be seen all over the country but now seem so few nowadays. We walked in to a friendly greeting from an elderly golden retriever. The bar is long and thin with some tables, benches along the walls and a bar at one end. We ordered soup: ham hock & pea (for her) and vegetable (for him). Both were delicious but hers was especially so. Fortunately there was too much for her so he had to finish it. It was served in mini-tureens on boards with wholemeal bread and butter. The knife and spoon came with a linen napkin - most unusual for a pub. Good atmosphere, friendly and reasonable prices. There is a beer garden at the back with some children's climbing equipment on a side plot. Car parking is very convenient - just pull off the road.

Called in ad hoc, looking for something to eat in the evening. Traditional country pub, warm and welcoming on a cold night. The food was generously portioned, well cooked with plenty of flavour.Owner/publican, courteous 'old school' - which makes a refreshing change.

Decided to have a meal here last Saturday night as we haven't been here in sometime. This pub is warm and friendly. Nice roaring fire to keep the pub warm. We ordered Rump steak and skate. WOW you no its good when you don't need a steak knife. The skate was delicious. Today we went back for Sunday lunch. Truly flavoursome. Roast beef cooked how l like it and lamb. Nothing is too much trouble and there is a nice banter with the barman. So if you're looking for excellent food and good service why not give it a try

Service was friendly & warm (as was the pub), good menu choices (nice to see a rabbit stew on a menu) and selection of beers. We had smoked mackerel, pulled pork & chicken sandwiches, which all came with some of the best tasting chips I’ve had in years. The bread had been made by the chef/cook & the combination of flavours in all the sandwiches was excellent as was the quality of ingredients. If the sandwiches are anything to go by I can’t wait to try a meal of the main. It’s clearly being run by someone who loves food and who wants to pass that passion onto their customers.

My father and I stopped at the Kings arms at random when travelling to Colchester on a Friday night. It was quite quiet with a few people in the bar having food or a drink. The welcome was really friendly and we sat in the dining area which was classic 'pub'Great service. I ordered the rabbit stew and my dad the ham and eggs. As we were waiting the chef brought us 3 types of bruschetta to try which were really nice and on the house! My stew was very good, must have been at least a whole rabbit in it and the 2 large slabs of ham my dad had looked great. Always a good sign when everything comes piping hot on hot plates. Only regret was that I wish we had booked the b&b as I bet they do a killer brekkie!

Me and my girlfriend have just got in from our visit to The King's Arms for our dinner. I have lived 5 miles from this pub for 30 years and can't believe I have never been here. Lovely warm authentic British pub and I love that, no pretentiousness just friendly welcoming staff. The owner took time to speak to us and they even brought us out an extra starter just a kind gesture (which was delicious!) The 3 courses were beautiful, cooked with care and attention, topped off by a lovely homemade desert. And to top it off the pricing was more than fair. Highly recommended and we'll be back! Thank you :)

We met up with another Couple and decided to go back to the Kings Arms as we had a couple of nice meals there before . We live in Eight Ash Green and so its only a 10 minute drive .As before, the Welcome was sincere and genuine . There is a new Menu in use and we had starters , I had home made Fish Cakes with home made sweet Chilli Chutney and it was delicious, I cant remember what my Wife and our friends had , but we left nothing on the plates. Also cant remember what everyone else had but I the Stuffed Breast of Pheasant which came with a fantastic tasting Sauce and side salad and a few bits this was amazing as well, and we all had a desert. At no time did any plate go back with anything left not eaten , and at no time was we kept waiting unduly for anything , bearing in mind that everything is cooked to order and prepared where required, but everything was hot and tasty and we all had plenty. My mate and I are big chaps and know how to eat but we had good sized portions every time. This Pub offers B& B and there were a couple staying and were eating when we arrived and they were amazed how nice it all was. The Kings Arms caters for small Wedding Receptions and will put a Marquee in the Garden, they have a large Car Park and I fail to see how its not packed at all times . This is a Great Pub delivering Five Star Service at Pub Prices . A three course meal of the highest Quality at a little over £20 per head ? Unbelievable,, we will be going back again.

My husband and I stopped off here for a quiet drink and bite to eat.The quant pub had a lovely atmosphere and the staff could not do enough to make us feel welcome. We ordered a share meat board which was exception value for money. We enquired about the chutney and were given additional flavours and home made bread free of charge to try. The food was both fresh and generously portioned. I could not fault the wonderful friendly service and we even purchased some chutney to take home with us. We will deffinately be returning and recommend this pub to our friends.

Visited The Kings Arms today, very friendly greeting, prompt service, but I am afraid that the new menu did not appeal to us at all, we much preferred the more traditional menu that they used to have, don't get me wrong they were very good and soon rustled up something that we liked, but like people say, it's a quaint English Pub lets keep some plain English food on the menu as well please , Fish and Chips, Gammon Steak etc.

Me and my sisters popped into the the Kings Arms this evening for a meal, two of us are vegetarian so we contacted them before hand and the chef was happy to cook off menu to our tastes which was lovely as not many restaurants offer much variety of good quality veggie food! The pub itself is very well kept and cosy, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. We were given complimentary bread (with onion, tomato and pepper) to start, which was home made and absolutely gorgeous. For my main, I then had a mix of stuffed tomato, pepper and courgette with some pesto and spinach ravioli in a lovely sauce, with a side of gratin potatoes. All of these were delicious and tasted really healthy and fresh. My other sisters had burgers which were apparently very good, and which were clearly also home made, and very nicely presented. We were all extremely happy with our food - very high quality for a pub- and we just wish we had space to finish it all. Prices were very reasonable considering the high quality of this home made food, would definitely recommend to anyone in the area.

5 miles from Colchester, a country pub serving the most wonderful food and home made breads. Hosts and chef make you feel very welcome, and the eautifully kept gardens and hanging baskets are very attractive. There is also bead and breakfast available which I can only assume is of the same high standard.

We decided to visit for an evening meal to celebrate my daughters exam results. My parents had visited at lunchtime a few weeks previous and really enjoyed the food so suggested we visit. We received a really warm greeting and the service throughout was friendly and helpful. After ordering our meals, we were surprised by the chef who appeared at our table with the biggest loaf of handmade bread we had seen. Jamie is the chef and he had wanted to try this special bread which was baked with a whole Camembert inside it. How lucky did we feel that we got to sample it ! It was delicious!! We didn't have starters , but the main courses we ordered were superb. It was lovely to see different combinations of food on the menu . Made a change from the typical pub food. The lamb was succulent and the stuffed chicken and lentil dish went down very easily. The children in our party were very happy with their more traditional childrens meals too. Then we had a problem........so many desserts to chose from!!! How could we pick just one each??We settled on Bakewell tart.....what a wise move that was . Absolutely scrummy. And my daughters really loved the super chocolatey lumpy bumpy. Coffee was served with delicious homemade biscotti and then we finished the evening meeting the resident dogs! We are avid animal fans so we were thrilled to meet them .All in all a perfect evening out for us. Relaxed atmosphere, super friendly staff and well thought out delicious menu.We will be back before too long that's for sure. All we need now is a special evening where you can just have desserts as they all sounded great. Perhaps a taster menu of puddings only?? Thanks to everyone at The Kings Arms

We staggered in to The Kings Arms after 8pm on the Friday of the August Bank Holiday weekend after a long day on the road and some miles still to go. We just needed to re-fuel and continue on our way. Outside, the window boxes looked lovely and inside it was quaint and cosy but the deserted bar, very quiet restaurant and odour of stale fat did not seem auspicious. However, we were very warmly welcomed and the menu sounded surprisingly interesting - not regular 'pub grub' at all. We ordered and sat down and were quickly served delicious homemade Mediterranean style bread with a generous bowl of good oil and balsamic vinegar (this was complementary). Because we were in a hurry we had just ordered main courses and these were served with little delay. I had perfectly cooked pan fried cod with samphire and a wonderful buttery, piquant sauce. My companions had the herby chicken which was also impeccably turned out - the presentation was beautiful and the flavours amazing. The portions were not huge but I prefer that and with a starter and dessert we would have been full to bursting. Such a pity we were in a rush. With food of this calibre, I can't understand why people are not beating a path to the door of this delightful inn.

I will start this long and concise review by stating I've been in the hospitality industry. We came here pre booked as a table of 9, including 3 children at 3 pm on a Sunday. This was for my mother in laws birthday. Now the reason I say this time is because by now the kitchen had run out of several key components of their roasts and other main menu items such as beef and mashed potatoes. This considering the place was completely dead at this time. Why is the kind of chef that can not ensure they have ordered in and prepared these items that are vital components should wander down to McDonald's where someone with more experience will handle that for you whilst you're flipping burgers. Most of the remaining menu items are just thrust into the microwave or deep-fried without soul or care. Our starters took a full 50 minutes to be served, we had enquired earlier why it was taking so long as the kitchen had no other orders to prepare and was informed they were just being plated up. Still took another 20 minutes to produce these 5 starters! I'd chosen the salt and pepper squid that contained neither salt nor pepper! Bland would be an understatement. The rest of the meal was no less a long awaiting for poorly presented mess. It's clear the chef has no passion for food, and I'm certain wears a plaster on his microwave finger from overuse. The food was bland, overcooked, and under prepaired. The lamb Shank looked as if half the meat was missing, the hunters chicken was overcooked and dried out, and the beef bourguignon had no red wine, making it a tiny piece of beef stew. The list of disappointed meals went on. I can honestly say this is the single most disappointing meal I've had the misfortune of being served (eventually). I will not return and would recommend others avoid.

Covid safe and clean. Was a pleasant day so could sit on their outside patio area. Had a bacon sandwich, friends had cake. Bread was dry and I wish places would use proper butter, not some spread. Even with bacon you could still taste it... Service very friendly and pleasant.
