The Kingfisher in Allerdale

Visited this restaurant twice during the week of Keswick Mountain Festival. It is a great place for wholesome no frills meals. The fish and chips, scampi and chips and lasagne are all super value for money. The staff are very friendly and booking a table is not always required. All in all a very good experience,

Great fish and chip place, we sat inside and had quick service with friendly staff. Pie and chips were delicious and were a large portion size for decent price. Plenty of curry sauce that tasted lovely and complimented the meal very well. Very pleased with our meal and will be coming back!

Got a takeaway from here having failed to find a table to eat in any of the pubs in Keswick! Absolutely the best decision, delicious food, all freshly cooked, highly recommend.

Ordered from here the week before last. Quite a long queue, but food was good. We went and found a spot by Derwentwater to eat, which was nice. Very polite and friendly staff.

Called in after a day out in Keswick. Fish was delicious, light crispy batter and proper chips. Will certainly be back.

We only had chips as a quick snack after a long walk.The young guy that served us was really polite and friendly.The large chips portion was huge and that was between 2 of us,they were really tasty and if we’re ever back in the area,we’d definitely go back

After seeing the queue at the "other" popular fish and chip shop in Keswick we decided to try the Kingfisher. We were not disappointed at all. We ate upstairs in the lovely restaurant. The service was friendly and efficient. We asked for a smaller portion of chips, but it was still plentiful and the fish was huge. The batter is one of the best we’ve ever had. Didn’t have room for desserts unfortunately but they looked delicious too.

Although this chip shop is a bit off the main street it's worth finding. The restaurant is up above the chip shop. Staff are very friendly and the food is amazing I had cornish pasty chips and mushy peas and my husband had turkey and ham pie with his chips he said he would have that again and asked staff who made the pie? home made by the chip shop owner.The food came out after ordering very quickly highly recommend.

We had our evening meal at the Kingfisher's restaurant on a Saturday and Sunday evening. The staff were friendly and the service excellent. The meals are prepared in the take away chip shop downstairs, but there is good choice with ample portions served hot and very reasonably priced. And you can book! A real gem when current Covid restrictions make accessing restaurants difficult at times especially for family groups.

Had a lunchtime visit in the restaurant above the chippy. What a pleasant surprise! Very comfortable setting with attentive and friendly staff. The fish n chips were probably some of the best I've had.

Best chippy I’ve ever had in my life and I’ve done the rounds! I loved it so much i had it for tea my first night then for dinner the second day! So fresh fish is absolutely massive and the curry sauce is to die for

This place has become part of our tradition when we visit the Lake District. We have now visited 3 times in 3 years. The best fish and chips in the Lakes. Food is superb, the service is excellent and we love visiting here. Will be back again when we visit next!

Went to this restaurant during our stay in Keswick, the staff were very welcoming and friendly, it’s very clean and the tables well spaced. Within our group of six we had fish, scampi and pie meals, all perfectly cooked - best chips ever.

I don't normally have fish and chips its one of them things that I really need to be in the mood for, but my partner and kids wanted to go so we did (twice). Oh my god, it was fantastic I had the cod and chips (in the restaurant) on both times we visited and it was amazing, expertly fried and just fantastic. The wife and kids had other things like the chicken burger, sausage, quiche scampi and no one complained about another. The daughter especially loved the banana milkshake.

I ordered cod and chips with curry sauce. The batter was incredibly crispy as were the chips. The curry sauce was just as great. We ordered to takeaway and ate it at Bassenthwaite. Even after a short drive the food stayed crispy and hot.

Lovely huge portions of very tasty fish and chips. The fish was perfectly cooked in a nice light batter along with a huge portion of chips and a good helping of mushy peas all washed down with an inexpensive bottle of white wine. Highly recommended!

This place does what it says on the tin. You get some good fish and chips, can’t ask for much more especially when the staff was so helpful (my husband couldn’t make up his mind so went with the staffs choice). I would say however that the curry source was the worst I’ve ever tasted, I’m not from around here, so maybe that’s just how they like it in Cumbria (watery) not sure. Either way it didn’t ruin the meal or experience.

I have been a regular customer of the Kingfisher for around 10 years now and my most recent was just a few days ago. I have to say that the pandemic and the unfortunate fire they suffered has not impacted on them in the least, the service remains exceptionally good and very friendly, plus the food is excellent and always served in decent portions - I really can't fault them.I was struck by just how good the Kingfisher is because I recently visited a similar establishment in Shap, they could learn a lot from the way The Kingfisher does business. The Kingfisher best chip shop in Cumbria, no question about it!

Lovely fish and chips. Big portion and not expensive. Cumberland sausages weren't anything special though - I was quite looking forward to the sausages.

I ordered small chips, small sausage & gravy to takeaway. The food was really nice but I did think £2 for a small chips was a bit expensive. It was served in a box which was good. Unfortunately by the time i'd got it home the gravy had soaked through all the chips and stuck them all together so I ended up with just one block of chips that I struggled to separate. That being said, I said it was ok to just pour the gravy on, but I wouldn't have if I knew that was going to happen.

Fancied Fish & Chips whilst in Keswick and went for the Kingfisher. Glad we did. Decent portions and well cooked food at a reasonable price. Despite the queue the ordering and 'delivery' of the food were well managed by the staff. Would reccomend this place.

First visit here & we were more than impressed,spotlessly clean,lovely staff,I got the home made Turkey & ham pie which was delicious,enormous portions!didn't want to leave any but it beat me.Covid rules fully in place,felt safe & full.😁

We decided to have a lazy Friday and headed into Keswick just to grab some sausage and chips to take home for a chip butty. Lovely chips, huge portions and the battered and plain jumbo sausages were nice.Too much food for 4 of us.

We had the Cod and chips and the Haddock and chips which were both excellent. The portions were large and the quality was fantastic. We arrived late on Sunday evening but they let us take our time in the restaurant and we were not rushed. I would definitely recommend.

Nos sentamos arriba en el restaurante donde estaba encantador y cálido (había estado lloviendo, así que esto fue un regalo de Dios) y las mesas estaban bien espaciadas en relación con las medidas de COVID. Las cosas de espera son insuperables. Todos fueron muy amables y serviciales e interactuaron bien con nosotros como familia con niños pequeños. Recomendaría comer aquí a cualquiera.

We ordered the steak pudding and chips, the pudding was thick and doughy with very little steak in it! We are northerners so know what a pudding should be! Also very expensive won’t be going back!

Ambos pedimos "bacalao grande y patatas fritas" (no había una opción "regular / pequeña") y la descripción fue bien aplicada. Fue un super trozo de bacalao y las patatas fritas estaban perfectamente cocinadas a nuestro gusto. Mi marido se las arregló para comerse todo, pero tuve que dejar algunas de las patatas fritas, los guisantes y la masa (aunque me comí todo el pescado). Muy abundante y delicioso. Reservamos nuestra mesa en el restaurante con una semana de anticipación, y en estos tiempos COVID, recomendaría a todos que hicieran lo mismo. El restaurante está arriba, mientras que en la planta baja hay comida para llevar. El restaurante tiene licencia para servir alcohol y tiene cervezas locales embotelladas, así como vino por copa. Definitivamente recomendaría The Kingfisher.

Back again for another great meal. I was a great believer in the Keswickian which is another establishment in the town until I discovered the Kingfisher, their fish & chips are first class, everything cooked to perfection and the service was first class.

Brilliant find- take out or restaurant service. We eat in the restaurant. Food was excellent, great choice, great service from all the staff and efficient prompt service. Perfect before our drive back to our hotel an hour away. Would recommend this restaurant.

Fui a cenar para llevar después de pasar el día escalando Skiddaw. Estábamos muy hambrientos y muy cansados, así que esperábamos una buena comida y un servicio rápido. No nos decepcionó. Era un lugar elegante y limpio, mesas bien espaciadas, el personal con viseras pero decepcionado por la comida. Mi esposa tenía pasteles de pescado pero apenas podía abrir la carcasa y cuando lo hizo dijo que no valía la pena el esfuerzo, que el contenido no tenía sabor. Yo tenía pescado y patatas fritas, el pescado y los guisantes estaban bien, pero las patatas fritas que ambos teníamos eran duras. Su color se veía bien, así que imagino que eran viejos y habían estado tirados en la sartén demasiado tiempo esperando ser vendidos. Le dijimos al personal cómo nos sentíamos, se veían un poco incómodos, no creo que se lo informaron a nadie y nos dieron una factura por el monto total.

Estábamos buscando un chippy y vinimos aquí después de leer las críticas en TripAdvisor y solo puedo decir que este fue el mejor pescado y patatas fritas que tuve en mucho tiempo. ¡Era una porción tan deliciosa y muy grande con papas fritas frescas! ! Lo recomiendo absolutamente.

Fui con mi esposo porque habíamos comido allí anteriormente. Tengo enfermedad celíaca, por lo que necesito alimentos sin gluten. Me dijeron que lo único que no contenía gluten era el curry vegano, aunque había muchos platos que podrían haberse hecho sin gluten simplemente quitando la salsa. Fue bastante decepcionante en ese sentido. La comida estaba bien, no está mal, pero no muy sabrosa. El personal fue agradable.

Standard fish and chip establishment with suitable indoor seating for table service. Price average, and quality of food average. The staff seemed a little unsure how to talk to customers with the Covid measures but it didn't stop them proving a good service.

We dropped in for lunch. We have visited Keswick many times but hadn't realised the Kingfisher had a restaurant. The food was lovely and the restaurant was very clean, with plenty of room between tables. Staff were very friendly and clearly took an interest in making people feel welcome and safe.

Fantastic Gluten Free fish for me and Battered fish for my husband. Chips gorgeous. Service excellent.

Staff were nice and friendly, but unfortunately the food was extremely disappointing, the chicken pie tasted very weird and was inedible, and the quiche special wasnt very nice either, a real shame as looking at the other reviews lots of people do like it here

We have short breaks in Keswick 3 or 4 times a year, and eat out in a variety of places in the town. However during this stay, with the Covid restrictions, finding somewhere to eat that was not booked up or had huge queues waiting for a table was problematic. We noticed the entrance to the Kingfisher restaurant adjacent to their takeaway and as their was no queue we took a chance and fortunately got a table. The restaurant was clean, comfortable and the staff friendly and efficient. The menu was as expected chip shop based. Our order was served in a short time and the food was well cooked, hot and tasty and reasonably priced. We were pleased enough to return later that week.

Had a nice meal here, we just walked in and were seated. Nice and clean and friendly staff. Fast service. Tasty fishcakes, lots of chips and my partner had fish and chips generous portions. The only thing we didn’t like were the mushy peas were a little watery for our tastes. Would visit again.

During a trip to Keswick we decided to get some fish and chips and eat them outside. We did have to wait about ten minutes for our order but we were advised this would be the case. My husband got fish and chips with curry sauce whilst I just got a small sausage and shared his chips, I also tried a small piece of his fish and the sauce. The food was all beautifully cooked and there was plenty of it. Even though we shared the chips we couldn’t eat all of them and ended up putting some in the bin. Next time we visit Keswick we would like to try the restaurant upstairs.

Visited whilst on holiday in the area. Friendly welcome. Interesting menu plus specials board. We ordered cod and chips and lasagne and chips. Service was quick and efficient. Food was hot and delicious. Will definitely visit again in the future.

We ordered the cod and chips special, the portion was huge!Very tasty, fish was a brilliant white and nicely cooked, the chips let the meal down slightly, very crispy, a little over done but still enjoyable.Staff were friendly, we had to wait approximately 15 min as cod isn't the standard "fish and chips" - this is haddock.A nice meal.

We shared a large cod and a small portion of chips. The fish was at least sixteen inches long and an inch thick, excluding the batter! We managed to eat three quarters of the fish between us. Great value and will certainly go again.

We had a delicious Fish (Haddock) & Chips and also a home made Chicken 'n' Mushroom pie with curry sauce (very generous portions). No reservations required, walk-in and nice friendly service. I would definitely recommend a visit when visiting Keswick.

Had a wonderful al fresco lunch in the Keswick sunshine today of fish & chips from this little gem of a place. Generous portion, freshly cooked tasty fish & lovely crispy well cooked chips. No nasty speckled of blackened ones. Delicious. Would recommend.

We were in keswick for a afternoon..went for lunch at the kingfisher To say am gobsmacked is a definite understatement...they served our meals on a side plate.... we were all looking very confused..Then the penny drops it's so you think your getting a big portion..(you dont).. I payed £56 for my family to eat so would have loved them to be full...save your self some money and go to the take away instead..one more thing considering what I paid it would have been lovely if your staff smiled..just a thought...

Decided to have take out during our weekend in the Lakes and plumped for good old fish & chip supper. Was not disappointed, nice sized fish, tasty and lovely chips (not greasy). Prices reasonable to boot.

One of our come to places when we arrive in Keswick, dined here twice in a week. Contrary to what a couple of people have posted, the waitresses are lovely, very polite and give you time to decide what you want to eat instead of rushing you. We have always found the fish and chips to be beautiful, the fish batter definitely not greasy, and neither are the chips. What I don't understand is how someone can post greasy fish and dry chips!!! The majority of reviewers are happy with the food that speaks for itself..

My wife is a coeliac so she loves going here for the fish and chips but the gluten containing stuff is great as well. Good portions great staff and reasonably priced only drawback is it's upstairs so if you have mobility it might be an issue but the takeaway on the ground floor is just as nice.

Lived in Northwest Wales all my life so know a bit about F&C including F&C's from Conwy Kingfisher is right up there with the best- maybe the best 😀 couldn't be bettered

We were in keswick Monday and had walked down to see if the American diner , was open it wasn't and we stumbled straight upon this place, we found the restaurant fairly busy, we acknowledged one of the ladies on entering, and sat around 5 mins before We were asked had we decided. I found the service overall quite curt and an effort , tried conversation non really in return, scampi and chips good, as was the sausage , not greasy and was ok, service with a sincere smile would make this better

I was so looking forward to having fish and chips in Keswick. The reviews put this place at the top and the board outside said they were the best fish and chips in Cumbria. I'm sorry to say they didn't meet the expectations that others have bragged about. The fish batter was greasy and had a funny snatch to it. The chips were rather dry. I was gutted as I was looking forward to them so much.

Without doubt the best fish and chips you can get anywhere! Huge portions and amazing fish. No need to try anywhere else.

We went here for fish and chips over Xmas and they were good. Fish was huge and lots of chips. Never been before as we usually use one at the top of the square but would recommend. Not too expensive either.

Popped into the restaurant part of the chippy on my way to the YHA. I ordered homemade steak and kidney pie, chips, mushy peas, gravy and an ale. It cost £11/$15 . It was worth it: chips were firm, the pie was tasty with perfectly cooked meat, the peas were mushy (as they should be ), and the ale was lovely. The only thing that was a letdown was the gravy: not particularly tasty, but ok.

This is a fish and chips shop with a restaurant upstairs. We ate in the restaurant. The food is absolutely delicious. Some of the nicest fish and chips I've ever had. The service was polite and friendly, the place is clean and good looking. Bearing in mind it is a fish & chip restaurant it is wonderful. It is not Michelin star, but if they gave them to chippys for taste, it would get one. The menu is limited and cooked to order. You cannot ask for more. Thanks to the staff.

Situated on the main street of Keswick this has take away or eat-in options. The restaurant gets busy but the wait was not long for freshly cooked fish and chips which tasted superb. The large fish really is large and cooked to perfection. The atmosphere is slightly old fashioned but in a nice way. This is well worth a visit when on holiday there.

Called in after the landlord at our B&B; recommended The Kingfisher. Spacious first floor restaurant. Friendly staff, certainly the place to visit if you've worked up an appetite after a long day on the fells. I had the Cumberland sausage, chips, peas and gravy, big plate of food, all nicely cooked, great value meal.

Either eat in or take away the fish and chips never fail to deliver a great taste despite being huge portions. GF fish is great. Chips are all cooked in a different frier so all the chips are GF

My favourite fish and chips in Cumbria, the batter is always light and crispy. Friendly staff who always recognise me even though I’m not a regular. The Cumberland sausage is also a favourite but you need to be hungry to do it justice.

El hijo tenía papas fritas, tarta de salchicha gigante y salsa, una vez más quedaba la mayor parte. Aunque el servicio es bueno y el personal es amable, y hacen lo mejor que pueden teniendo en cuenta la cantidad de clientes que tienen, no volveremos a utilizar ninguno de los chips en Keswick. , preferimos esperar hasta una de nuestras visitas a casa

Spent a long weekend in the Lake District and had my heart set on some fish & chips. Very happy that I chose to visit The Kingfisher. Nothing fancy about the restaurant, food or service... just very solid all round. Opted for the large portion cod & chips and it was absolutely massive and very tasty. All washed down with a quiet lager. Enjoyed it..!!

We ate in at the beginning of our week in keswick and food was excellent and then towards end of our week we returned and got a takeaway and that was excellent too. Definitely recommend.

Three visits in our recent 2 week holiday, fish, chips, peas, steak pie, curry and gravy sauce all exceptional as usual with no grease at all on our plates. Really good value for money with lovely waiting staff, see you in January when we're back.

Fantastic fish and chips and I find best in the town. They offer a wider range of fish selection compared to others. The portions are about right for the cost. Excellent place to eat thanks

Had fish and chips from here on 27 of sep as arrived for a weeks holiday the food was really taste and the large fish was amazing I definite it back again

This restaurant never fails to deliver with both the service and the food. We have been coming here for years and if anything it just keeps getting better. The staff are very friendly and obliging. The haddock and the cod are both excellent as are their mushy peas. If you have room try their sticky toffee pudding which is just to die for and one of the best I have had. You will definitely not be disappointed.
