We have been here quite a few times over the years. The pub is located in the Somerset flood area and has been flooded a few times – hence the need for wooden floors. It is simply furnished in the old style, but the beer/wine and food is good. We were impressed by the efforts the pub made during lockdown to support the community and keep itself afloat, although we were too far way to make use of it ourselves, and we have been to several of their themed weeks since. The French week had a brilliant Omelette Arnold Bennet and for the man, snails. Recently the Italian week had hugely filling pasta dishes, a third of which hubbie ate: I could have done with something green with it. The pub even had non-alcoholic fizz by the glass – the first place I have known to do this. The landlady is very welcoming.

Cam here for lunch on our way through Somerset to Devon based on other reviews - the staff were very friendly and welcoming but we were shown to an upstairs room with no atmosphere which was disappointing and food was pretty bad. Burnt potatoes and dried up vegetables. Pie had been microwaved. Wish we had gone somewhere else.

Every time I come home to see Mum we go somewhere different to eat. I found this place on Google the reviews seemed to be ok. So we went there for dinner,. We both had the Crab thermidor, it was ok it wasn't served very hot, luke warm infact I wouldn't have it again and don't think I would recommend the dish as it was quite tasteless . it didn't come with enough bread.only 1 piece cut in to 2 with a small side salad for £15. We asked for an extra piece each for the crab and were told they would have to charge us for a side of bread! , Which they did. We wouldn't go back , maybe we just chose wrong. The pub itself looks old and tired inside and out and in need of decorating and some much neede TLC, it was also really cold inside.

So. On the face of it, it's a nice pub. We were staying in the local area for 2 nights. So we chose to eat our evening meal here as it was within walking distance. We both chose the same, a burger & chips. Burger was cracking, really good. Chips.. awful. I would say they were cooked earlier and chucked in the fryer again. They were sodden with grease and the oil needed changing a week ago. Skin on wedge type, should have been good... The churos I had weren't that much better, under cooked and tasted of dirty oil. We were told by a local it was hit and miss so decided to go back the second night, ... oh dear. The OH had a chicken and chorizo burrito, it did have skinny fries that were "ok" the burrito was cold in the middle and full of grease. I chose Tagliatelle, this was swimming in cream, pasta was cooked a while prior to finishing off and had become starchy and stuck together and I chose cheesy garlic bread..this was soaked through with fat, it was the ends of a loaf of bread and really stale. In fairness they didn't charge for it and the waitress agreed it looked bad. So, take it from someone who knows. Don't cut corners. Garlic bread isn't stale ends of a loaf, it's a good French stick or ciabatta.. Do cut your menu, you have far too much going on to excel at anything. Honestly, you're making work for yourself, and you don't need to do this much. You've great staff, albeit one waitress was sniffing all of over the place as she had a cold .. but overall it was just disappointing 😞

OK, so for many years, prior to the M5 being built (and that's a long, long time ago) this is a pub we used to pass on the A361 between Ilfracombe and Warwickshire and it was always somewhere I wanted my dad to stop at. We never did. Now I am a big boy (in more ways than one) I decided to give it a go on a very wet Thursday lunchtime. Now, when you used to walk in to a pub the greeting used to be, "good afternoon" or maybe "hello sir". Nope, we received from the youth behind the bar a, "hello guys what can I get you?" Now I know it is 2024 not 1994 (more's the pity maybe) but take it from someone who did bar work very well for over ten years, that's not now you meet and greet customers you haven't met before. No, no, no, no!! I ordered drinks - ammused how the operative held the glass when pouring a pint. Certainly a new one on me. Sort of how you hold your hand whilst holding a skull, when you say, "Allas poor Yorik, I knew him well". We ordered sandwiches with bread made by chef. It didn't say when he/she/they made it, but if 'fresh bread' was written on the menu, it would have been a fib, a big one. The bread was microwave warm but I think this was an attempt to revive it, a bit like when you give someone mouth to mouth resusitation but with a microwave. It didn't work anyway and neither did cutting off most of the crusts to disguise it's advanced age. We left some loose change on the table hoping that the funds would go towards some bleach to clean the unisex bog. What a big let down after all those years driving by Won't stop again and certainly won't be back.

We visited this pub after hearing that they had won an award so we were expecting something fairly special. Oh my goodness how did they get this award and who are the people writing the excellent reviews? We both had Sunday lunch and it was okay, nothing special particularly for the price charged. We had plenty of food particularly a dish of vegetables that contained all sorts, which would have been great but everything was piled on top of everything. There was beetroot but this had tainted other vegetables with beetroot pink, not a lovely look. I absolutely love vegetables but I was put off by the presentation. The whole place looks to be in need of a good clean both inside and out. I wasn’t too impressed on walking from the car park to see rubbish outside the kitchen and other bits a pieces that had been left around for what appeared to be a long time. As I say the food was okay but we certainly won’t be back again.

Repeat trip as the food was so good the first time and it didnt disappoint on a second visit. The pub was packed with groups having Christmas gatherings, but the lovely landlady managed to fit us in. The staff here are friendly and attentive, nothing is too much trouble. The food is locally sourced where possible with a list of suppliers. I had the haddock and chips and the fish was sublime, soft moist flakes with the most delicate, crisp batter, proper potato chips also yummy. Good value too. Another lovely experience.

Food was delicious. Had a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich with a bowl of chips snd a couple of pints there at lunchtime. The bread for the sandwich was home-made, the chips were home-made as well. You can tell they had not come out of the freezer, they were skin on, made on-site chips, and the bacon was really thick and tasty. Food was promptly brought out as well. Great place to stop after a country walk.

We met family for lunch here on a rainy October Wednesday. Staff were friendly and the bar area has a wood burner and was warm and cosy. Upstairs there is another floor of tables overlooking the bridge and river, and also an outside dining area. The pub was quiet when we visited. The food was excellent. Three of us had the pie of the day (lamb) with chips and veggies, the fourth had a ploughman’s with ham and goat’s cheese. Everything freshly prepared and chips clearly hand-cut and definitely not from a freezer-bag! Pies were very tasty and filling on a cold day. The ham was thickly cut from a joint, and the crusty bread was delicious. The puds were also much enjoyed - chocolate brownie and treacle roly-polys - and relatively inexpensive at £6 each. The post-lunch coffee was also excellent. Service was prompt throughout, and we were able to order from our table instead of going up to the bar. The free WiFi was useful. This pub deserves to be busier than it was today. We enjoyed our visit very much and will definitely be returning when next in the area.

Went here with family for a Sunday lunch. Customer service was really poor from the waiting staff. The drinks were slammed down on the table and the Diet Coke tasted flat. The Sunday lunch was very disappointing. The roasties were black and hard and the vegetables were undercooked. The vegetables that were given to us were all mixed together and didn’t look very appetising. Looked like scraps put together from the compost bin. Won’t be returning, don’t waste your money.

I had fish last night which was perfectly cooked with perfectly cooked baby potatoes and veg husband had duck one of my allergies and said it was delicious it certainly smelt good. Absolutely the best steak dinner I’ve had(and I’ve had many), My partner had dressed crab and that was perfection also. Many thanks for a great dining experience, we WILL be back.

Having been recommended to this place for Sunday lunch from a fellow vegetarian we thought we'd try it. We rang to book, asked specifically about the nut roast and booked a table. It was all downhill from there. We arrived for our 1.15pm reservation to be told the nutroast was sold out. The other veggie dishes were pasta or curry! Won't bore you with the exchanges of conversation with the staff, safe to say, poor service and poor food equals no return.

So we were recommended to eat here. We sat in the upper dining area with no one else in the room. So we wre able to talk. Then three adults were shown a table by the young waiter right next to our table. Our conversation stopped and the other people's conversations were also awkward. Why oh why are people shown tables sooooo close to each other when there were loads of other tables in that area!! It's poor management. We were thinking of desert/ coffee after our meals but quickly felt uncomfortable. You lost our custom!! Oh won't be back .

Oh dear there seems to be a problem with the chicken. The dish was advertised as tandoori. It was butterflied chicken that I could not get my teeth into. Totally inedible. I was quickly offered an alternative so had the vegetable masala Ten out of ten for the local veg did it have to come with the earth still on it ? Went with a diet tonic which came with something brown floating in it which I was told was a slice of dried lime that would rehydrate. Maybe I have missed a new trend but the dead parrot sketch came to mind. I am not trying to crash the place I know times are hard but hopefully the kitchen will take the criticism on board and improve. We will not return.

First our table was given to someone else despite us being there 15 mins before the booking. Food was terrible. We came during 'Spanish week'. The risotto was inedible, the tapas was tiny for the money, definitely not worth it. The hunters chicken was a deep fried piece of reformed chicken, not a chicken breast as described. Ordered cheesy garlic bread, I asked for it to be on White bread, it came on whole meal and was informed there wasn't any white bread even though a friend had a sandwich on white. Waiting staff were rude, clearly didn't want to be there. Nobody informed us of items not available on the menu, one had to choose 3 different things as they didn't have it. Items received not as described on the menu. The only thing that was nice was one salad which is pretty hard to mess up. Won't be returning and my advice is don't waste your money here.

We’ve been coming here for years and can’t understand how a simple place like this can have such a great menu with so much choice and everything I’ve eaten has been lovely. It’s a no frill honest pub with great staff and on a warm day has a lovely outside area overlooking the river (although it’s often muddy, but still nice outlook)

Well, what can we say? We had our covid wedding reception at the King Alfred back in December. Lisa and her team were flawless with such a friendly and personal touch. Nothing was too much trouble and all our needs were catered for. The food was superb and again individual needs catered. Prices are excellent. We felt such at ease even within the current covid situation. The pub itself is quirky and has such a lovely atmosphere. We loved it that much We've been back for a take away roast today (current government guidelines only allowing take away) yet again food and service was outstanding. We can not recommend the King Alfred enough and can't wait to return for a take away or sit down meal when allowed!

I love this pub, has to be one of the best in Somerset. Lovely ambience, staff are great and the food is fantastic. I had duck the last time I went and it was cooked perfectly. The desserts are always amazing as well. The cheesecake are always spot on.

Well my hubby and I met a family friend here while staying at a campsite not so far away. It was recommended by our friend who looked up dog friendly pubs, when we arrived they were just opening and were greeted warmly by the landlady and as we were the 1st through the door we had a great time choosing a drink. We had a good selection of were to sit and as we chose upstairs, the staff were very happy to recommend food and we all chose off the lunch menu. Food came out hot and fresh and staff were happy to let us chat. Will recommend this pub to anyone visiting. Great if you are out walking as just a couple, family or on a dog walk.

My quick review;Ordered starter of scallops, totally delicious and then had the most juicy and tender homemade burger. My sister had the pork belly, she was completely happy. Generous portions and tasty! The staff are lovely, warm and welcoming and the covid set up was clear and well maintained. Will be back for sure. Ps easy parking at the back too.

Absolutely crap, the environment is nothing but uncomfortable, food is terrible, as if it were cooked in a cheap microwave. The owners seem to be in an alien world of their own, not sure they would know what correct customer service was even if it slapped them across the face. Oh and by the way, bathrooms do need to be cleaned, left in an absolutely vile state upon my visit. Will not be coming here again. Avoid at all costs.

Ordered 5 different meals (for the family - not just me!!!) online from the £8 ‘Lockdown’ menu and collected from the pub at time we specified. Excellent value for money and delicious food. Well packaged, hot food. Thoroughly recommend for a taste of normality in these strange times we live in at the moment. Thanks Lisa and your staff.

On the very night pubs are to close because of lockdown, the landlady and her team cooked us a perfect steak dinner, fantastic and massive mixed grill and a luscious loaded burger with all the trimmings, and even delivered it personally. Now that's service.

Dined here last night , 12th March, and had excellent meals. My wife is a Coeliac, and follows a Gluten free diet, we had been recommended to visit the King Alfred by our Coeliac daughter who told us there was a good selection on the menu and the staff were aware of the condition.Arrived at 6:30 p.m. to find a busy pub and lucky to get a table for 2. Read a Smashing menu and Chalk board of “Specials”. As it was Steak night went for a Rib eye and Mixed grill both plates were overflowing but the highlight was the Port & Stilton GF sauce !!!!!. Highly recommend the King Alfred for a visit by Coeliacs Enjoy!,

My mixed grill was completely undercooked, steak was done to a medium rare, which is fine as it’s what I asked for, but the pork and lamb really should not have been underdone. Even the grilled tomato was underdone. The sausage literally looked like it had cake straight out of a packet and onto the plate. It was grey.

Yet again I'm back on here to rave about the wonderful King Alfred Inn! Loving the new tables and new dining room with its gorgeous and huge inglenook fireplace. I met a friend for lunch yesterday and we had the most delicious lunch. My friend had the Greek Salad and there was so much in it (all utterly scrummy) that she couldnt finish it. I had my fave which is the creamy mushrooms as a starter with a salad instead of bread although their bread is gorgeous but I'm on slimming world! They sorted out my salad with no issue and we both agreed the food was just brilliant.

While on holiday in the UK last August, from Australia, my wife accompanied by my 3 brothers, decided to drop in for lunch. This was done without reservation, and we were accommodated by the staff, with a table organised without further ado. Drinks were ordered by a staff taking our selections, and then he returned to take our order for our lunch selections. The food was delivered relatively quickly and all of us found it to be of excellent quality. We decided to order deserts, and a "Special" was offered which would have part of it's cost donated to a local school charity. 3 of us ordered the "Special", with the other 2 choosing different menu items. The deserts were of the same quality as the main meals, which we all commented on being surprising. As the premises was relatively small, and was under some major renovations, at the time, everything was considered outstanding! The property is a little out of the way, but well worth the trouble, to take in such good country tucker.

We went to this pub based on the reviews as we were staying in the local area Unfortunately the evening got off to a bad start as when we entered the pub we weren’t even acknowledged After standing at the bar for a fair few minutes and a few glances from the bar staff we were then sent to our table . Really feel like younger members of staff need to be taught the importance of politeness and interaction with the public .We then ordered our food one burger and 3 tandoori chicken with lentil Dahl The burger was good however we were served 3 dishes which can only be described as chicken ratatouille. That would of been fine if that’s what we hadOrdered but it was not what has been described on the menu . The surroundings are a tad rough and ready which would be fine if the food and service was good but unfortunately that’s not the case .

We are regular visitors at the King Alfred - the landlady and team are very welcoming and friendly. The last time we were here the waitress got our order wrong and then disagreed with us when we pointed this out. Back again today, same waitress and she was great! The variety of vegetables that are on offer with the roast is first class - its a huge meal if you go for the Works! Until the next time...

My daughter and I met here today as I had recently rescued her dogs brother and we wanted them to meet up . We thought this was an ideal spot 70 miles from each of us. We were made to feel very welcome even with 2 very large dogs and were bought drinks to our table , a real blessing as the dogs settled down. My daughter went to order the food with my purse to pay and we enjoyed 2 very large wonderfully real home cooked meals( non of the usual pre bought and warmed up average pub food ). Feeling very full and relaxed we were dragged out by the dogs and set off home in different directions agreeing this was an ideal‘ meet up spot’. Well my daughter informs me that as she drove out the wonderful young man who worked there waved her down and pointed out so politely we had not paid! We had a tab my daughter had not reminded me. Of course she went in an paid and they were so lovely. How embarrassing! I have phoned to add my apologies to which I also got a lovely response. Thank you for lovely visit , great food and such patience. We will be back but promise to pay at the time!

Popped in to this pub on our way home from a holiday thinking we would grab a quick bite to eat. From walking in we were put off straight away... lady behind the bar was very rude and didnt acknowledge us for at least 5 minutes, we just stood at the bar and waited. There was what I can only assume was a waiter stood beside the bar looking at us but didnt say a word either. We finally got served and asked for a menu - I didnt even want to touch it! We got handed the grottiest looking paper menu with things crossed out in pen and marks and stains all over it. We sat at a table when the waiter came and put his foot on the chair next to us to tie up his laces... straight from that he came to serve us our coffees - no wash of the hands or anything. As this was our stop off I took the opportunity to pop to the loo.... after seeing the state of the toilets I couldn't even stay to drink my drink and had to leave! I would seriously consider maybe some staff training and maybe hiring a cleaner or something as this is one of the worst places I have ever visited !!!!!

I took my husband and daughter to the King Alfred Inn for my husbands birthday meal. I read the reviews first which were really good. So was not concerned with letting hubby down. we ordered our drinks and sat in the dining area, which was rather dark and gloomy. I had to take the menu to another table where there was a light so that i could read and make my choice of meal. We all chose a starter and main. The issue was not the service for the order of starter and main, but the quality of the meals - Starter of pate with 4 slices of bread - only 1 small butter portion. To be fair the starters were really good. No problem with my husbands and daughters and it is a pity the main was not up to this standard. Main meal medium steak was well done, onion rings crisped to a cinder, chips really dark in colour - looked burnt but were soggy - all really greasy and swimming in oil. We wondered if there was a temp chief cooking. We did leave quite a bit of the food due to the greasiness so was still hungry and waited to be asked for pudding and we waited and we waited and we waited - we then got fed up with waiting so we got up and the lady behind looked like she was stock taking - so we paid the bill and left. We then went to Tesco's bought Tesco's finest lemon tart and Kelly's Ice cream and ate this at home - this was the best and tastiest part of the night!
