Stayed one night, intended to have dinner but went elsewhere. In need of TLC big time. The owners should sell if they can't see its potential. Should be a great pub, with three letting rooms, skittle alley (no team? Trophies on show not awarded since 2019), character restaurant and bar areas, beer garden, gazebo, parking. Tourism area, Millfield School, Glastonbury nearby.

Went to the King Alfred on a Friday night with 7 friends for dinner. Initially we were a bit concerned as the pub was virtually empty - save for a few regulars - at 8pm. However, we were made extremely welcome by the landlady and we ended up having a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We had starters, mains and desserts and they were all exceptional. It remains a mystery as to why the pub was so quiet, but I'd certainly recommend a visit if you're in the area.

This was our local for years. It used to be a free house until it was purchased by Punch. Unfortunately the managers who moved in were nice enough people but didn’t have a clue about business or how to run a pub. That changed a couple of years ago but again the managers were lazy and it was grubby in need of TLC and went down hill. Glad to say there are new managers who are young and enthusiastic and want to succeed. They are doing a brilliant job making everybody feel welcome in a traditional pub environment. They have smartened the place up, have a great choice of drinks and are really friendly. They are fast building a good reputation for food as well and have even had to turn people away on a Saturday evening. It’s great to see the place busy and in good hands again. Good luck to them!

Friendly welcome, one of the best ploughman's I've had , ( ham & cheddar ) the pickle and coleslaw was delicious . Other members of group ordered steaks and said they were very good and the home made onion rings very tasty . Great value for money. The toilets were spotlessly clean . Definately will return, when in the area again .

Booked a one night stay on line, asked a couple of questions re meals and parking, no reply. Arrived Sunday afternoon, staff all clearing up after a busy lunchtime service. Shown our room, across back carpark on the first floor. (we were the only people booked in) Only one cup in room, and that was dirty. Stained bed linen and hairs in bed and on bathroom floor. We were offered the other room across the landing, no cups in this one so we brought the clean two we had recently got from the first room. Offered a complementary drink which we accepted and booked breakfast for 9am the next day. Walking back to room at night, lighting left a lot to be desired. Breakfast, what a laugh, we think the only part that was cooked fresh was the fried egg, everything else seemed to have been heated in the micro. Coffee, no spoon, no sugar. Toast that had only had a fleeting meeting with toaster and on the same plate as the puddle of warm baked beans butter for the toast obviously from larger container and dolloped in a small bowl. Back to room pack and checkout, made a coffee, stirring it with my toothbrush handle as now noticed we had no spoons. Walked over to the main building to check out only to find doors locked and all lights off, left keys in room and departed. Last point, both my wife and I have both had dodgy stomachs since the 'breakfast'

Visited for a family meal early on a Saturday evening. Ellie at front of house was very welcoming and ensured all was good during our first time at The King Alfred. Plenty of choice of food on the menu. It came quickly, was well-presented and the portions were generous. We had a very positive first experience. With so many neighbourhood pubs disappearing, hopefully locals (and visitors) will help this one continue to thrive. We will be back.

My husband and I visited with our 2yo daughter. We thought we'd try somewhere in Street as we live here and had heard good things... However, extremely disappointed. We ordered a bruschetta to share for a starter... The tomato/onion mixture was tasty, but lacking in quantity unfortunately. I had ordered a 'homemade' lasagna which resembled jelly and tasted straight from the freezer. It was inedible... Flavourless with 5 layers of pasta and a smattering of what I presume was mince. The overall temperature of the lasagna wasn't great, some bits hot and others warm at best. The garlic bread was good though 👍 My husband didn't really have any complaints with his, but he was unable to taste anything as he is suffering a badly blocked nose. Not one member of staff came round to check how the food was, if they had, I would of made it known that i was disappointed. Even when we went to pay for the food, the gentleman at the bar didn't ask how it was. We will not be visiting for food again. Extremely disappointed with our visit :(

There were 8 of us for my 92 year old dad's birthday lunch, we all ordered and every thing just happened allowing us to concentrate on each other and enjoy the great food and service. Yes their prices are a little bit more than many pubs, but the choices are worth it. No manufactured food here just honest real and delicious meals made fresh.

A friendly and peaceful oasis in the idyllic countryside. Just a few minutes by local bus (20-minute walk) to Glastonbury town, and the Tor. Our room was large comfortable, and clean. It was located in a separate building in the courtyard behind the pub so there were no issues with noise. This was the perfect location to regroup after the mayhem of London. The hosts were extremely generous, helpful, and friendly. No ego here! The food was delicious, and our night stay included a lovely breakfast. There are plenty of local options on the menu, and the vegetarian burger was great. We did a lot of walking while in Glastonbury, it was so nice to return to a comfortable and welcoming environment to relax and unwind.

I have eaten here four times since the change of ownership and name alteration (it used to be The Two Brewers which was popular with many locals like myself). It has been refurbed to a high standard is clean and comfortable. I can not for life of me fathom the demographic behind the menu though. I would not call it pub grub but then again it is not gastro pub type of fare either, one thing is for sure it is now one of the more expensive places to eat in Street. The food is presented well and is okay. Please be aware though if you have a health issue and need to avoid salt they season your potato fries/chips for you before they reach the table something which made a friend of mine, who did not know this as it is not mentioned on the menu, quite poorly afterwards. Sadly it is not somewhere we dine at regularly anymore or would recommend.

Visited on the day before Christmas Eve. Perhaps because it was Sunday evening everything had been reheated, or not! The first complaint was cold chips on the egg ,ham and chips. They were returned and came back hot ,but by this time the ham and egg were cold! The roast beef was like shoe leather ,the gravy thin and tasteless and the vegetables cold. My steak and ale pie was ok but had burnt bits of pastry, obviously reheated at least once and of course cold veg. We complained to be told we should have mentioned it earlier, but what would they have done? We ordered icecream and had obviously been discussed in the kitchen as the waitress threw it at us. We did get the icecream free £5.50. The car park was empty ,now we know why. Never again!

Met a colleague for lunch - nice clean well presented pub with some decent beers and cider on tap. The menu is good, in fact it was hard to decide. I went for the belly pork special, which was really tasty and my collage opted for the pie, which looked really good. If I was to make an observation it would be they don't need to offer such an extensive menu - less is more (Perhaps change it monthly). That said, having such an extensive menu didn't affect quality, just made it harder to decide.

I never expect too much from local pubs, food wise as I've always been disappointed in the past. However this time I was pleasantly surprised. The food was absolutely delicious, reasonable priced, presentation was incredible. Would definitely go again

We called in here after seeing it was recently refurbished. Very easy decor, not over done. We sat down and ordered pate followed by chilli.

Visited the newly refurbished King Alfred yesterday. Very clean, nicely decorated and good food - we had Sunday roast. But we weren't offered any sauces or giving a serving spoon for our veg. The waitresses were very pleasant but seemed to be working in the kitchen as well - not able to check on diners meals etc. The lone lady behind the bar was taking food orders, serving drinks and dealing with people wanting to pay their bills - bit manic. Overall a good place to eat but could do with a bit more organization.

We went here for lunch today. Two of our party had ploughmans. This arrived with just one slice of stale brown bread each. My friend asked for white bread instead and was given two slices from a supermarket loaf which was also stale. As the rest of our party were happy with their food we decided to carry on with our food. I then found a piece of string at least six inches long in the ham. We had to ask for our table to be cleared and asked that the kitchen be told that the bread was stale and the ham contained string. No one acknowledged our complaint. On paying we asked if our message had gone to the kitchen and were told we had not been charged for the extra bread! It wasn’t extra we had asked for white instead of brown. No apology at all and as we were sat in a corner not one member of staff asked if we were ok or offered any apology for our complaint.

Excellent food, clean and friendly. Lovely staff and great atmosphere. The pub looks charming from the outside and also inside has tradition character features. Good value and choice of food 🍴. Will return again 😊

I stayed at the King Alfred for a business trip for just one night. I was greeted by a really friendly man who was more than happy to help. The pub looked nice and comfortable and I was shown to my room. Great first impression.

Tonight was my first visit since it’s refurbishment and name change!! The decor was tasteful, beautifully done, the staff were delightful but the main star of the show was the food, I had a crab salad with lemon aioli and boiled new potatoes - an extremely generous amount of beautiful fresh crab, quite delicious. All the food coming out of the kitchen looked and smelt amazing. The puddings were equally as good, I had locally produced ice cream, my fellow diners had Eton Mess and Mango Panna Cotta both we’re outstanding apparently.

I was in the area on business so stayed just one night at the King Alfred. The room was on the ground floor in a converted farmhouse to the rear of the property with easy access if you are disabled.

Called in and had a Lamb sausage roll, a Brie and bacon sandwich along with a cherry danish. Probably the best tasting combination of food that I have ever had from a bakery. Can’t wait to go back.

Taking into consideration its location, its staff, its cuisine, its ambiance, its clientele and not forgetting its log fire, The Strode Arms in the village of Cranmore is quite possibly the best place for miles around to go out to for a relaxed and enjoyable evening meal. Charming hostess, busy chef, imaginative and tastefully presented food and a splendid time being had by one and all.

By far the best fish and shop in Street. The young lady who serves is lovely and polite and the young lad is a good member of the staff. They remember what i order every time which is amazing service. Would recommend to everyone.
