Our food from here was absolutely disgusting! The chips described as ‘thick cut chips’ that cost us £3.50 per portion are 100% MCCAINS MICROCHIPS!! can’t actually believe they are allowed to do that?! The bacon in our butties was beyond stale and impossible to even chew, I won’t even be giving it to the dog, it is better suited as a boomerang.

Sadly lacking. Booked an afternoon tea at the Keys. This was purely down to an offer of £10 each. On arrival we were greeted promptly and shown to our table. The afternoon tea consisted of 6 triangles of sandwiches, 2 pieces of quiche, 2 small espresso size cups of soup, 2 differing small pieces of cake, 2 very small pieces of millionaires shortbread, 2 small pots of a dessert (couldn’t determine what it was) and 2 scones. Sandwiches - these were good and well filled. Bread was soft. Quiche - warm but bland. Cake - walnut piece was moist, the red velvet was not so nice Pot Dessert - claggy and didn’t taste of much. Again, very bland Scones - extremely dry. Not pleasant at all. 2 scones came with one very small pot of cream. Nowhere near enough to go around. I asked for another pot and was brought one over. Nothing more said. The jam was rather tasteless. The waitresses were pleasant and friendly, We found ourselves feeling rushed out as the place was clearly closing. That spoilt things somewhat. Upon paying we found an extra £1 had been added on for the extra small tub of clotted cream. Very disappointed as this was not mentioned at the time, and very skimpy considering you’d always expect a small tub for each scone. Would I go back? No, I didn’t think it was value for money with the offer on. Exceptionally bland food sadly. Disappointing.

We booked afternoon tea for 1.30pm on a Saturday. I have been here lots of times and the food is so delicious, with lots to choose from. A lovely selection and is so well presented. The down side here being that at 2.40pm we were being reminded that the restaurant closes in 20 mins. Then another reminder at 10 mins, then another at 1 min. We had not even finished our Prosecco! We commented to the waitress, who was more than polite, that perhaps the last afternoon tea sitting should be 1pm, to allow customers to finish their afternoon tea in plenty of time, instead of being rushed.

Myself and family have visited twice, such a beautiful setting and the food is lovely (it’s on the higher budget but don’t mind that if everything ticks the box) The reason for my 2 star review is due to the owner/manager being rude on both visits, we never planned on going to the keys and had been doing a bit of shopping but fancied somewhere nice to eat, when he greeted us he was very abrupt, we should of walked out then but gave them chance, we asked a staff member if we could have the afternoon tea offer, he asked the manager and he came charging over rudely saying “you have to book, we only do so many a day etc” which is absolutely fine but no need for his rudeness. Again we should have left but it was quite embarrassing to just up and leave and I had taken my mum for a treat! He totally ignored our table from this point on, we heard him speaking to other customers in a totally different manor which made us feel judged. I visited again just to see if he was just having a bad day but still got his rude treatment, I was actually going to say something to him on the way out but my grandma asked that I didn’t as she didn’t want the confrontation so I left without saying anything. It’s a real shame as it would be somewhere I would visit whilst in the town centre. This review doesn’t have every incident that occurred but it’s a brief description, I have never have such bad service from owner/management in my life and I do visit lots of different cafes/restaurants

I have been to The Keys many times in the past. Went this week with my daughter and 2yr old grandson. A few points; portion size have shrunk considerably. Goats Cheese Salad in very small plate with slither of cheese. This did used to be on a large platter dish and was reasonable for the price. Not any more!!! I'd say the same re Caesar Salad that my daughter had. Also grandson has milk allergy and they could only offer jacket with beans. Even said the chips may have dairy on them..We booked the table on line and it said child eats free with a full paying adult. At the till I have to remind them of this and was challenged that it only applies when you book on line. However they did honour this, reluctantly. Sorry to say this was one of my favourite lunch places to visit. Not any more.Standards have dropped and prices have remained high.

So yes we were 5 mins late but no one had called to tell us that they were cancelling she was derogatory and very rude. Cracking tearoom in the centre of Huddersfield under a church. The menu is made up of simple but reliable classics; we had a crispy skinned jacket potato, thick cut ‘skin on’ chips and filling omelettes. I’ll definitely keep it on my radar for a cosy lunch at reasonable prices, and the little bar didn’t go unnoticed either. Potentially a lovely venue in the atmospheric vaulted church crypt but failed to deliver due to charmless owner. The sign on entering asks you to wait to be seated, no problem but I would expect a smile or welcome from the manager rather than having to shuffle about waiting awkwardly. No banter at all as he led us to an empty table. Should have turned around and left at that point. We explained we only wanted a drink but boss man clearly doesn’t take orders so we had to wait until the designated waiter attended. Cake selection looked pretty depressing with a couple of mauled flapjacks and dry looking scones. The other staff were pleasant but the place lacks any kind of joy. Open kitchen was busy, fish and chips looked good.Don’t like giving poor reviews but the owner needs to work on being hospitable to his customers...

I went to the keys today with my mum, booked a table for 2pm which wasn’t ready for us when we arrived, even tho there were only 3 other tables with people eating. A card was put on our table to say our time was up at 3.40. Our bottle of prosecco was brought to our table and then a selection of sandwiches which consisted of tuna egg and ham, the cakes were scones, brownies and carrot cake. We brought the brownies and carrot cake home. When we took them out of the bag they were rock hard and inedible, they went straight in the bin. At 2.50pm our bottle of prosecco was about to be taken away when we said we hadn’t quite finished it the lady said we were already 10 mins over our time? She was actually an hour out and did apologise but even if she’d been right I don’t think she should have been taking away the little bit that was left! After that bottle was finished we were just left until we asked for more prosecco, we were poured a glass then left again, a man who looked like he could have been the manager finally came and asked if we wanted topping up. There was a live pianist playing known music throughout our visit which was a great bonus. The waitress was extremely helpful and very polite. We visited here on Saturday for An audience with Ricky Tomlinson’ we had a brilliant night. The meal was really well paced and the food was delicious and beautifully presented, served by pleasant staff. We both had the veggie option of mushroom with goats cheese served with ratatouille, pesto and potatoes, lush, and the chocolate tart was amazing. Drinks were reasonable, Ricky was awesome! Will definitely pop in again next time I’m over that way and try a breakfast/lunch.

Recently attended a celebrity night at the Keys in Huddersfield. We didn't know what to expect especially as it said the event would open at 7pm and aimed to finish for 11 30pm. We were quickly seated at a table for 6, sharing a table is something that we haven't done often except at weddings so we were a little unsure how this would work! We ordered our drinks and waited until all the other tables were filled before our starters arrived. All the food was delicious and well presented, the main course being outstanding. Our fellow diners were really good company and we actually enjoyed this new experience out of our comfort zone, it really is good to talk! Our first entertainer was a top comedian who really warmed the room up ready for Rick Tomlinson, who was so engaging and down to earth. The evening few by and before we knew it our night was an end, this event was worth every penny and we will be looking to come along to another event at The Keys.

This place offers everything and more. I've eaten at more places than I can be bothering to put down on this review but Keys is a genuine family run business with utterly delicious food. True, something are not for everyone but find a place that offers perfection and your in a dream. Please you bad reviewers grow up and stop your stupidness. Keys is very fair and offers a super choice of food. The cooks are very accomodating and really nice people. The owners are super hard working and stop at nothing to help Huddersfield grow! And the main course are always value. You get no difference in service if you have a groupon voucher or not and keys always push free cake vouchers on you at every point. Show me a place that can do that. Love Keys

Arrived to meet a friend, hadn’t been for a few years. The cafe was clean. It was Fri lunchtime and quiet. Staff seemed fine. We ordered our salads, I had noticed the price but expected the salad to be something special.... it was not. A few flakes of salmon, overpowered with strong watercress and Dollops of creme fresh all over. The new potatoes were very over cooked. Very poor value for money. I didn’t complain as did not want my friend to feel uncomfortable as she had chosen the cafe. There are places that provide better quality and value for money in the town centre for lunch.

I booked The Keys for my daughters Christening party. Initially everyone including the obnoxious owner seemed helpful and friendly. The day of the party I was very excited to have booked it in a lovely place, however, you would think they had never held party bookings before... extremely unorganised leaving myself and other half to reorganised the tables to fit in the entertainment. After clearly emailing the owner with a list of party food for the children’s table we got cold pizza, chicken nuggets with no wedges(which were in the email), crudettes which appeared with no dips (also ordered) and fruit kebabs. We also ordered basic sandwiches for this table which we also didn’t receive. When I queried it he told me I didn’t confirm them at our last meeting! Yet what I did confirm was THE EMAIL just in case I’d forgot anything. Very poor. On top of that we asked for a cheese board which costs us £3 per head so £95 it has no chuckney, garnish nothing and comprised of a chunk of Brie Stilton and one cheddar!!! Appalling!! The bar was over priced and two staff were serving one person at a time plus it was very over priced. RIP off. Then they decided to close the bar at 4 when I had booked the place till 5. In the ended we asked for the food to be bagged up and taken with us. This however was also a problem as they said it breached health and safety rules, by this point I said I would sign a declaration to take full responsibility for the food that I assumed was fresh that day and that they needed to bag it up... they did. The staff are rude and under skilled, I even had to ask for a bin liner to clear the tables as they neglected to think to do it... they did do it eventually. I paid a lot of money for the venue and feel it was not worth the money at all. I did have a great day for my daughters christening overall as I refused to let this idiotic place get to me... plus the entertainment I booked was fabulous ( shout out to party Friendz). I would avoid thus place like the plague especially for party bookings.

Had lunch here last week. My partner and I had been to a pub restaurant just before and experienced poor quality food and with the exception of the waitress who had served us poor customer service. What a happy discovery The Keys was. I had the salmon and cod fishcakes which were delicious. Added to this the crypt is an interesting venue and the staff were welcoming helpful and kind. I had told our waitress about our experience earlier and when we left she gave us 2 completed cards which we can use when we next visit! Our next visit will be soon and I expect it will not be our last.

An amazing place for lunch in the crypt of an old church with a tremendous ambience. It is tastefully decorated but not over done. It is place where you can fell you have spoiled yourself but you wont have to break the bank to do it. Family and child friendly with a menu that works for everyone. The food is well presented, cooked perfectly and portions are plentiful. I must if you are looking for a nice place to have lunch

Would still visit again as i believe everywhere deserves a second chance & hopefully we have a better experience next time.

We purchased an afternoon tea with groupon for four on a busy Saturday afternoon several weeks ago. I can not recommend anyone visits during these peak periods. Friends have advised that on a weekday the experience is fabulous. Sadly on a Saturday they really seemed to struggle to provide even an adequate experience. We weren’t at any point made to feel welcome. Everything seemed like a massive effort for the staff. Front of house did not seem to care we were there and simply sending us to sit on the chairs in the entrance without making any comment about waiting times. Once we were eventually given a table we were ignored by all wait staff who actually went to serve a couple who arrived after us! We only placed our drinks orders when we prompted a waiter that we had been waiting at least ten minutes. When the food did arrive the waiter made no effort to point out what sandwiches were which (something which I’ve come to expect when ordering afternoon tea). Furthermore jam and cream had not been brought out for the scones. The food was acceptable but nothing amazing. Would not recommend.

Booked the murder mystery event for a few of my family members and my self. The food was fabulous and the the actors were great. The wine was expensive at £18.50 to say you can buy it from shops for £5.00 a bottle but suppose event was quite cheap to book so that's how they make their money.

Four of us came for afternoon tea. We had one Groupon voucher and paid for two extra afternoon teas. We can honestly say that the food was lovely. Went to the keys for afternoon tea which was a birthday present from my friend . The inside has nice surroundings its a shame my husbands only view was of the wall , we asked , who we take it was the manager if we could move tables , the answer was an abrubt NO all tables are reserved ,and that was it she just walked away but on leaving there were still empty tables . Waited 10 mins before anyone came to see us . Our hot drinks came well before our Afternoon tea which is the smallest i have seen 3 little sandwich triangles each , 2 fruit scones and 2 pieces of victoria sponge . We had to attract a waitress as we had not been given jam or cream for the scones ,and she didn't seem to know where to get it from .Not once did anyone

Brought my mum here for part of her Christmas present, it was disastrous. The waiters sat us down and ignored us for 10 minutes, then came over and we said we had afternoon tea booked. Waiter brought a nice little cake tray usual afternoon tea style and a bottle of prosecco. 3/4 of a sandwich each and 3 deserts, not much at all.

I booked Afternoon Tea at The Keys through Groupon for my Nanna’s birthday treat. When booking a number of weeks ago, I mentioned that I am vegan, and requested a replacement. I received a phone call on the day of the booking, 2.5 hours before we were due to dine, explaining that they don’t cater for vegans, and there would be no alternative for me which I was very disappointed about. They did say that I was welcome to bring my own dairy-free milk and order from the main menu (which I would obviously have to pay separately for). This was very frustrating as, had they told me prior to the day, I could have got someone else to join us to eat my portion, but nevertheless, we went and I said that my partner would eat my share on top of his! This for me was a bit of a bad start, but they did turn it around…

I travelled to York on this trip with a mixed aged group party of mums, daughters and daughters in law. It was a great trip, excellent food, good value for money. However memories of the whole day have been spoils by the boorish attitude of the manager, who in my mind has insulted my daughter publicly after the drinks bill was queried. Admiittedly, an oversight on our part, but we were unaware that there was no draught lager, however , open bottles of a speciality lager left as a substitute, fir when we arrived back was wrong, and should have been explained giving people the chance to change their order. Unfortunately 3 of the party did not want the second bottle and subsequently they were left untouched. Therefore the reason the bill was queried. This man refused to let people settle there own bills when leaving, insisting it was paid for in full. Resulting in the confusion that occurred. His comments are uncalled for, rude and insulting. I am sorry I had left when this uncalled for aggressive behaviour was directed at my daughter and her friend an mother. I have always enjoyed the Keys despite the high prices charged. . but will never set foot here again.

Family meal. More bar staff needed and some did appear somewhat stressed. I ordered the rack of ribs, they tasted lovely but were no where near hot enough. Good JD sauce. The corn on the cobs were inedible, boiled within in an inch! My husband enjoyed his beef burger, but overall, for the price of food, it’s nothing special. Most of the party were just ‘erm, it was okay’. Good price on a bottle of red wine and the food came out as we ordered, we they wanted us to pay at the bar due to party size. Main male staff member greeting as we walked in was friendly.

After a bracing walk around part of Digley Dam this was an ideal stop off to satisfy healthy appetites. It wasn't particularly busy so my friend and I were fortunate to select a table by the window to sample views of the surrounding countryside that the area is famous for. We both chose the regular Fish & Chips, good value at £12 though smaller portions are available at £9.50. My friend's Side Salad cost £4 which I thought expensive for what he received while a side order of Mushy Peas set him back £2. I thought the drinks were expensively priced, £2.90.for a pint of Fanta Orange but we'd visited for the Fish & Chips and these were delicious so it was definitely worth the effort. The menu is quite extensive so there are plenty of alternatives to satisfy most appetites and palates. A good experience.

We were so looking forward to our romantic valentine's evening. Sadly the previous reviewer has said most of it for us. Extortionately expensive, to be honest, for actually a less than mediocre meal which was not particularly enjoyable. It was obvious, from the occasional groans, the that something was very very wrong in the kitchen, even though front of house staff attemped to cover the cracks with gracious service. Also, yes it was far too cold. Have had lunch several times in this beautiful building, which have been very pleasant, although they really do need to sort out the heating problem.

We didn’t have much time so rather than go ti RMT Kitchen where our friends said parking is a nightmare, they suggested we hit Toby. We were seated and drink orders were taken and then nothing more happened so eventually I went over to a waitress and ordered the Ultimate Roast Dinner Sandwich for our son (just some carvery stuff in a roll or pud basically), and carvery for the two of us. We went to get it, meat was cold as well as most of the veg, and the sandwich never came. After about 20 minutes we asked for it and it had obviously been forgotten so she rushed off and got us an Ultimate Roast Beef Sandwich which is just some beef and gravy slapped on a roll. Honest misunderstanding so no big deal. We asked for a replacement, she took away the tray, manager showed to to ask about our issue, both said it would be sorted, again nothing for another 20 minutes, and we had to ask yet one more time to get a sandwich that was sloppy, but too hot to touch, and a bowl of cold gravy. Desert was fine, but the custard with the apple pie was again a tongue burner (nuked maybe?). When time to pay came, none of this had apparently discouraged the waitress from asking for a tip. She was lucky we were leaving that day and there to burn off no longer needed GBP so she got wholly underserved 6 quid for her efforts. Overall we lost more time waiting than it would have taken us as per our friends to find parking near RMT Kitchen, and the food was absolutely not worth it.
