Good food and good service. The homemade steak pie was excellent. The bar had been converted into a restaurant since we were last there. The revamped decor and lighting were a bit stark and lacking the ambience of the old bar. The prices were roughly in line with Portavadie Marina and both highlight their local suppliers, but the Kames has a pub grub feel.

Stayed at a cottage in Kames for a week. Weather was fantastic. Regularly dropped into Kames Hotel for drinks and food. The food was of a very high standard and all 8 of us agreed that we would definately be back - the 2 dogs also agreed as the hosts were exceptionally friendly and attentive to both humans and dogs. Five stars all the way - we will be back.

We visited as a group of four and ate the rib eye steak, scallops and pork belly, followed by the cheese board. The steak was delicious and tender and although we ordered the pepper sauce we didn't use it for fear of spoiling the taste of the meat. The scallops were large and fresh and were a fabulous complement to the moist black pudding and cauliflower puree. The pork belly was equally scrumptious. The staff were friendly and the service good. The only disappointment was that we were leaving Scotland the following day and so couldn't go back for another meal!

I visited with 2 other friends for a meal. have mixed feelings about this place. The surroundings and decor were beautiful. The food was excellent, the waiting staff were very good and very friendly. The barman was very pleasant. That's the good points. £6.20 for a pint of Lager is just ridiculous. The food was a bit pricey too but it was good. The worst experience was the rather opinionated pushy Polish gentleman who insisted on buying us shots and wouldn't take no for an answer. He got very annoyed and the waitress had to apologise for him. From what she said it seemed like it wasn't the first time. Perhaps it was a one off but if it wasn't management need to sort that out. We would have stayed on after our meal for another drink but not with the atmosphere in the bar.

I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed the excellent Kames Hotel before. We first encountered it when we were house hunting in the area when we stayed in an fantastically comfortable room with views over the west Kyle, and had a sumptuous Scottish breakfast in the gorgeous dining room with the same view. The last time we visited was last night, and in the intervening two years we have paid numerous visits. You are assured of a very warm welcome in the Kames bar restaurant. The service is generous and friendly. The food is great, featuring excellent ingredients simply but expertly prepared, a good menu with something for everyone (including this fussy gluten free pescatarian!) and a range of specials. Portions are generous, and there is a fabulous range of whiskies with which to finish your meal. Booking is advised, as they get busy with locals as well as visitors to the area. Highly recommended.

I rarely write a poor review but today I feel I have little choice. COVID - one way system designated but followed by few. No sanitiser in the dispenser and no others visible. A large party arrived with very few wearing masks - I not aware of them being challenged and several comings and goings, ignoring the one way system, or wearing masks, was worrying. Some staff used masks, at least one rarely wore a mask but still served. I was rather surprised that my food order was taken from my table by a server who stood by the till and called over to me. Starters fine. Main dishes poor with microwaved (I can only assume) steak and ale pie. Fish and chips, much lauded here on Trip advisor reviews was very poor with greasy fish and very dry mushy peas. Chips were fine. Why did my main course arrive half way through my starter? Having been a regular diner I fear I shall not return.

Visited The Kames for a couple of evening meals over a short stay. Experience on both occasions was very similar. Perfectly pleasant restaurant with nice views and decent decor. Food was average though - better than pub grub but not deserving of the prices charged. Cullen Skink was tasty, but clearly heated in a microwave, and not well. Venison sausages were good, but the accompaniments were lacking (bland potatoes and frozen veg). Service was far from attentive, pleasant enough waitress/waiter but I just wish they’d been more present - I’d happily have ordered more drinks if we’d been asked. Not awful but definitely room for improvement.

We were staying at the Hotel and booked for dinner for later in the evening. This was our 2nd visit here and 2nd time we have eaten here also, Although it has been through a change of management. The service and food were most delightful, However a small issue, is that I am not sure with dogs being allowed into the dining area while folks are eating, Although on saying that, all the dogs while we were there, were very well behaved and well mannered and never caused an issue. I wasn't aware it was dog friendly since our last visit in June 2019. Although no issues to us. I can see where it will not suit all. However The food was plentiful, The Rib Eye steak most exquisite. A really good piece of food. I did have my eye on the venison pie to which my partner had. Really loved the selection of beers, and the clientele made our stay most delightful

A young lady occasionally took orders & eventually delivered food but that apart we were left to our own devices....to some hilarity others in the dining room explained whatever the procedures were, how to use the tea/coffee machines & capsules and how to get your own toast etc. A good way to meet fellow visitors but not the best way to part company.

We were staying for several days at Portavadie Resort (separately reviewed) and after a few days of the same menu and very expensive drinks, we decided we had to make the great escape for an evening. The Kames was recommended to us by family members who frequently use it when sailing on the Clyde and the Kyles of Bute - i.e. the well off side of the family! Just 10-15 minutes drive from Portavadie, the Kames is a lovely friendly hotel with a choice of dining in the restaurant or the large bar - we dined in the restaurant and were pleasantly surprised by a menu with a good choice of meals at reasonable prices (not sure if it's the same menu in the bar). Service was lovely and friendly and we had the added bonus of chatting to a large family group who were up from "down south" to celebrate the grandparents golden wedding. All in all a great evening. PS if you go for a stroll along the seafront before or after your meal. be sure to apply copious amounts of midgie repellent - haha!

Guys. You need to stop being so defensive towards your critics. After all, that’s how you made them feel. A visit to your hotel is an experience and when it’s a poor one It hurts both parties. Act on it positively and it can seriously improve your business. Listen, improve and reap the rewards. I have to agree that the hotel has lost its warmth and charm but you can bring it back. Treat every customer like your only customer and you can’t go wrong. I will give it another go next year, but if things haven’t improved I won’t be so supportive in my review.

We stayed here for 2 nights in the largest room in the hotel at £125/night. View from room was amazing, overlooking the loch. Room recently decorated, nice bed, nice bathroom, spotlessly clean, tasteful colours. All this was great. However experience in bar and breakfast was not so great. First night curry and veggie burger were ok. Second night goats cheese tart and salad, with sand and a stone in the salad, and chips undercooked which my fiancée found inedible! Chef was new and we were informed that he had not washed the salad! Salad was also drenched in oil which made it inedible. Breakfast - full scottish breakfast was quite greasy. Porridge was lumpy and looked and tasted undercooked. Second day porridge looked exactly the same; other guests were also complaining the porridge wasn't cooked, and ours was served with cream which tasted off and a side dish of olive oil rather than honey! Other guests were complaining that there was no cereal without sugar, and asking when their food would be delivered. On checkout we were told that the stone in the salad can happen with freshly prepared food! In summary; newly refurbished hotel in a prime location which is clearly trying to make an effort, but being very badly let down by the kitchen. Would only stay here again if kitchen is improved.

We where staying near by and thought it would be nice to go for dinner and was looking forward to it. We parked up, my partner was putting my mum into the wheelchair. I went in to see if there was a table for three, there was. I also asked if there was wheelchair access, I was told no, and offered no help. We managed to get the wheelchair up the three steps but couldn’t get the wheelchair in the door, it was a double door but the latch was painted over, we left very upset. This is I felt was totalling unacceptable.

A very good restaurant menu with lots of local produce and provenance. The dining room was very busy but coped very well with the amount of covers and the staff still had time for the customers, always a good sign. As an added bonus, on a beautiful night, the view of the Kyles of Bute was stunning.

We visited the Kames Hotel on a sunday afternoon with our dog and enjoyed a pint in the lovely beer garden, surrounded by amazing views across to Bute and beyond. This was our first visit to Kames and we decided to stay for an early dinner. Great choice of locally sourced pub food - we particularly liked the blackboard stating provenance of all produce. We both had the fish and chips (i changed my mind at the last minute after seeing another customers plate) which arrived very quickly and could not be faulted. Staff were extremely friendly and attentive and we hope to be back in the future.

Our first visit after change in ownership and, of course, one expects changes. The first change to greet us was that they no longer served the rather enjoyable Fine Ales from just up the loch. The alternative was anEdinburgh Real Ale - not a huge problem but why when there are really good ales produced locally? The menu is little changed and we enjoyed the food on offer. I suspect we will get used to the changes and would wish the new owners all the very best.

We were visiting family in Tighnabruaich, and normally end up in the Kames for a few beers to begin the evening. This time five of us stayed and had dinner, having moved through to the dining room. The meals were all lovely and the service from the young staff was professional and pleasant. We met James and Lily, the proprietors, who were both very welcoming and friendly, and who checked were all happy with the food. Excellent overall, well done.

We drove over from Dunoon to meet our son and daughter in law for lunch one day. Got parked, seated and greeted quickly. Friendly staff at bar. This is essentially a pub restaurant and none the worse for that! Food was good portion size. Hot and well cooked. We had a variety of dishes and could not complain about any of it. The place has a nice ambience and we'll be back!

Our driver phoned this restaurant the day before to see if they could manage a full coach load of people . Well they came into the coach to welcome us and did an excellent job of taking our lunch orders . Most just needed soup and sandwiches and everyone were very happy with the selection on offer and when they arrived beautiful plates of delicious sandwiches .Soups were piping hot and their sticky toffee pudding was to die for .Well done to the staff for coping in such a friendly way .

During a two-night stay at the Kames Hotel we had diner on both nights - the Saturday in the impressive dining room, overlooking the Kyles of Bute and the Isle of Bute, and the Sunday in the cosy, informal relaxed bar-cum-eating area.

Living locally we decided to pop in with a couple of members of our visiting family. It was our first visit since the new management took over. We all had the fish n chips and it was absolutely delicious! There was not a single thing that was not right. Beautiful. We have been again since and ordered the fish n chips again, it was just as wonderful as on the first visit. Will most definitely be coming back for more!

A second visit, large group with wee tot for an evening meal in the restaurant this time. Again excellent. If I was to be fussy, I would say that they were looking for the table a wee bit soon for another group. That said, no pressure was applied and it was only my awareness that led me to realise.

We had a family lunch here en route to Portavadie. The surroundings are tasteful and welcoming. On a cold, dreech day it was lovely to finally find a warm and comfortable place to eat, having trawled around a couple of other eateries in Tighnabruaich before we found Kames Hotel. We had ploughman's platter, soup, burgers and coffees. All was nicely presented and delicious, apart from the burger which was a bit of a let-down. The bun, bacon, cheese and chips which came with the burger were all great, but the burger itself was surprisingly poor quality. We would eat here again though as the quality of everything else was very good and it is just a lovely place to relax with fabulous uninterrupted views.

Just had a delicious meal. The second in three days as we're staying in the area. Impressed by meal on both days. Staff were so friendly & helpful. Heard the hotel is changing hands. Hope it doesn't change too much. We've stayed in the hotel on previous years and have recommended it to friends. Please don't make too many changes. We'll be back
