Hi,The jolly waggoner. Yes I ate with friends on Friday evening, I had also booked for the Saturday night as well, until we ate ...all I can say is all 9 of us were very disappointed with the food.5 fish and chips 4 of which were very dry/over cooked, one of these were so dry i sent it back after removing the skin to find the driest piece of haddock I have ever been served overcooked dried fish. And a teaspoon of mushy peas in a McDonald's sauce pot.... again very dry it all looked like it had been under a kitchen hot lamp for far too long.i asked for the replacement to have the skin removed before it was cooked as I like the batter but not the skin.I got another not quite so dry haddock but still with the skin on !. Don't suppose it's very easy to skin pre - battered frozen fish. Obviously there are no chef's in the kitchen just a cook who takes things from the freezer and drops them in the hot fat fryer. Such a shame about the food as the staff out front couldn't have been more helpful or apologetic. Needless to say we cancelled the booking for the Saturday night and you also lost out on possibly eight Sunday dinners as well. Regrettably, T.claridge.

We were back in the area we had lived in 30 years ago and decided to see how The Jolly Waggoner had withstood the passage of time. We were so pleased that while all had changed, little had changed. The staff were brilliant.and the food was fantastic. Freshly cooked ingredients, well presented and delicious. Pheasant - locally sourced - ragout for him.and smoked haddock and chips for me. Crisp and tasty. If we were ever back in the area, we would definitely go back

Visited Sunday with husband and kids following a trip to the farm opposite. Us adults had roast beef which was very nice. Impressed that the beef was cooked medium which is our preference and lots of pubs seem to overcook their beef. Veg was cooked really nicely and there was plenty of it. The cauliflower cheese was possibly the best I’ve ever had and I would return purely for that! Daughter had fish goujons chips and peas which she enjoyed. Staff were friendly and attentive and the general ambience was really welcoming and cosy. We will be sure to visit again.

A really cheerful greeting is always a great sign and we confirmed our table before walking locally. When we returned we all enjoyed a really good meal and the service was quick, efficient and very friendly. They are now part of the great Church Farm enterprise opposite and the staff there are all equally friendly. We always check the toilets as that is a good indication of how places keep 'behind the scenes' clean and they were spotless.Maybe having the menu on line would have been helpful.A great pub for an enjoyable meal or drink...highly recommended.

Impromptu evening out with my daughter and it was burger night at the Jolly Waggoners We hadn't booked and even though it was busy the service was faultless. Couldn't decide whether to have the Jolly Mac (double burger, with cheese and pickles) or the chicken burger so we ordered both and shared. Absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection and washed down with a free glass of chardonnay, which was part of the deal. A lovely evening in the garden. Highly recommend.

Twice recently we (a group of keen walkers) have used the Jolly Waggoner as a base for a morning walk followed by lunch. Top marks to the pub which is authentically English in the best way and to the staff who are welcoming and attentive. Once we lunched inside and once outside and both times enjoyed good food and attentive service. We'll be back, regularly. Thanks.

Following the earlier reviews we decided to make our lunch stop here after the Halloween experience at Ardeley farm. We had goats cheese salad which was very sparse, a bit of lettuce cucumber and slices of beetroot. Plenty of goats cheese! Really disappointed and quite expensive for what it was. Such a shame. Kids fish n chips looked though. Real log fire was very welcoming.

I've been there twice now for a group business meal! And as we were all vegans and they didn't have any vegan options on their menu - I called them up prior to our booking. And what they did was kindly create our own vegan menu for just a small group of 6! At first when I called I didn't expect to have such variety of options, but they went above and beyond! Not only did we have about 5 options of main meals, but the food by Mikey was absolutely delicious! We were all so impressed! On both occasions the waitresses were so lovely too. We were all so happy with the service that we intend on going back for our retreats. I noticed that people in other comments have highlighted that they only serve meat, well it is an organic farm and many people do go there for that! Yet for us, they were more than happy to accommodate our dietry requirements if you just give them a heads up :) Thanks again Jolly Wagoner, and especially Karen and Mikey for making us feel so welcome, accommodating our needs and making amazing food! We will see you soon!

What a lovely little gem this place is. Confused about some reviews.. obviously all places have some issues certainly during this difficult period of time but I thought the staff were fantastic at trying to manage the covid situation when extremely busy and the odd customer that didn't understand that the are limited staff and rules that need to be followed. The food was amazing. Our dogs were given treats every time the waitress passed us. Myself and a group of friends had booked a table in advance as we were staying on the campsite. I had informed the pub beforehand that I was vegan and they said that they would be able to accommodate me, along with sending a list of potential dishes I could have. On arrival we were initially told that they were not serving food, then after some back and forth told that they were and we could enter. We were presented with a different menu, which had none of the options relayed previously. We were then informed that they in fact were only serving beef and pork and had no veggie options - they also refused to make something up for me. Therefore, I cannot comment on the food as we were not able to have any. Our waitress was very apologetic and gave us some free drinks, she also allowed us to order JustEat to the beer garden, as we could not go anywhere else, so thank you to her!

I am surprised to read the good reviews on this page as our experience at The Jolly Waggoner today was pretty awful. It started with them having no knowledge of our booking, despite us having a confirmation email. They told us they could accommodate us, however they would need our table back for 1pm. Food isn’t served until 12.30...not ideal when we were there for lunch! This wasn’t a huge deal, these things happen...our main issue was with the food. It was truly horrible. I would go as far as saying the worst roast dinner I’ve ever been served. The beef was overcooked and dry, the carrots were completely raw, there was a teaspoons worth of cabbage, 2 greasy potatoes and a soggy Yorkshire. I asked for horseradish, they didn’t have any. It wasn’t just the roast, members of our group had fish and chips which they said tasted like it came straight from the freezer, it should have been served with peas, however our waiter just told us ‘there weren’t any’ when he bought the food, no apology or offer of an alternative. Then there was a mushroom risotto which was undercooked and bland, served with rotting salad leaves. Food was served on bamboo plates with wooden cutlery due to COVID, however it was almost impossible to cut into the meat or raw carrots with them. The only members of our group that left full and satisfied were our 3 dogs as they ate the majority. Go to this pub and enjoy a drink in their nice garden but don’t waste your money on the food.

Upon the recommendation of a colleague, my sister and my young child hoped to visit the Jolly Waggoner pub on Friday 7th August 2020 after a pleasant visit at the farm. We took note of the sign at the entrance regarding booking online. However, the pub garden was not busy, we counted numerous vacant tables that were socially distant in the immediate entrance and the far garden. We were greeted by a hostess and asked if they had room for 2 adults and 1 child for lunch. After conferring with the ‘head chef’ we were advised they were expecting a larger booking so eating was not an option. We were happy to accept this, yet we were surprised- even in a post-covid world in the hospitality industry there is usually a percentage of walk in table reservation and this was even more perplexing taking into account how empty the pub garden was. We then enquired if we could have a drink but we were told they could not accommodate us for a drink.Whilst looking around at the pub which again to my estimation (we took photos) there were between 4-6 vacant tables that were socially distant in the main court yard, and in the back of the garden I could see around 4 tables. A feeling of embarrassment, then anger came over me- optically it appeared the inability to even accommodate us for a drink was racially motivated. After asking to speak with a manager the head chef came outside and we were told counter information that they could in fact accommodate us for drink, which indicates to my estimation they became conscious of how this optically looked which was racist. They then suggested that we could even order some food.We were greeted with excuses I have heard during many other micro and macro racist incidents that I have endure in my lifetime ‘the hostess is new,’ ‘this is not racist’ ‘it’s not meant like that.’ To add further upset we drove past the pub approximately an hour after the incident and noted again, the pub was far from busy with approximately 2 tables being used by patrons. We live in world plagued by Covid-19, I am an NHS worker I have been at the frontline and I have seen the devastation this virus has caused. I completely understand the steps that restaurants need to take to protect their workers and their patrons- what I will not understand or no longer accept are racist incidents. My entire life I have been fighting for equanimity- the incident at the Jolly Waggonner was a painful reminder that there is still a lot of work to be done before we are all anti-racist.

If ever a pub lacked atmosphere and a warm welcome, it’s this one. Although it was a cold day, neither the fire in the bar or dining room had been lit. The menu looked delicious, but the fish was off so the only other non-meat option was macaroni cheese (what an exciting selection - pasta and cheese!). We couldn’t work out what the banging or chopping was that was continuous throughout our meal, but the music from the kitchen seemed to be keeping the chef happy! The meal itself was tasty, but eating out is more then just food isn’t it? The final straw was when they put a fan heater on and laid the kindling for the fire in the evening - perhaps they’re were expecting more guests then?!

Outside lots of place to sit down but only 3 table with umbrella avelaible - it was over 95 F everybody looking shade . We asked for more umbrellas , in response we got answer there are broken . We sit down finaly under umbella occupy 2 tables ,order 3 chips , 2 garlic bread and start to enjoy weekend . After 30 min first chips and garlic bread arrived . We were sure next comming . After another 30 min we ask manager about it , he said that was some mest up in a kitchen and soon food will be on table . Thank god we order just that . Another 20 min finaly we got it . We thouth they have bad day , we were wrong . Manager come alone and ask : do we still need umbrella , because other customers compaining on hit . We just sad : Yes we need umbrella . After 10 min staff appiered and separated our table and expaine they have reservation in exactly this place ( a lot tables were free ) . One table with umbrella gone . One min later guest took a table . manager come alone and said this table is reserve and ask them to live and find another place ( no information on table ) and took umbrella with him . Unbelievable .

Waiting OVER AN HOUR AND A QUARTER for pre-made pasta for the kids and a lamb burger? Told there was a party who had pre-ordered. Unacceptable not to tell a family with kids there would be a wait. Didn’t even offer a drink when we complained. Godawful service. Dire, dire, dire...

After all the positive reviews we thought we would give this place a go........never again! Worst food and service imaginable.....staff not interested.....too busy having a laugh in the kitchen. Fish (told it was fresh but obviously frozen) arrived swimming in a pool of oil.....twice cooked chips looked pale and were cold! Chef had forgotten to cook them the second time!!! Sausage and mash......sausages pale and looked boiled.....skin like rubber and mash lumpy. Lamb came drenched in a pool of water which was supposed to be pan Jus....tasteless....Such a shame that a hard earned reputation is being eroded quickly. I suspect that the previous chef left in May......hence the issues all of a sudden. We would never go again....

We visited the farm opposite and booked a dining table for lunch. Probably 30 mins before we got drinks and another 45 mins for food. They weren’t overly busy.

Was so looking forward to my sisters 60th birthday here after reading all the good reviews. . Food was luke warm. . Veg was stringy. . No apology given for dead wasp/bee hidden under garlic bread which had no garlic on it. Wasp/bee was cooked, so no it did not fly in whilst we were eating it as the staff suggested. No Eaton mess even though we pre-ordered. Ice-cream had lumps of ice in it and the rhubbub panacotta was nothing like the picture advertised. I Am glad the staff did see fit to accommodated us after putting our disabled booking up the stairs. .and did move us down the stairs as we requested weeks earlier. Most concerning was the state of the floor in the kitchen area that we had to look at every time a member of staff walked through the door. I get the weather brought people out and the pub was busy, but staff should be able to manage. . So disappointed, lucky we bought a Mark along who ate all our left overs. So it wasn't so bad paying the expensive price. We did not complain at the time as we felt sorry for my sister it was her 60th and we were all trying to keep it happy for her. . Also, a week later they have chose to ignore the review we wrote on their Facebook page. Will not come again and have already informed people to stay away to spare them disappointment

We popped in for a quick lunch. The service was friendly and my husband's soup was excellent as was my pate. Well worth the stop.

The Pub is across the lane from the farm that provides much of the produce brought to table. It's a "proper" old style pub with a big fire hearth and rickety tables. I'm told there's a separate restaurant area but we chose to sit in the pub.

Great traditional country pub. We had a fabulous roast lunch today, the meat all comes from the farm next door, very tasty. Amazing desserts too!

Visited for an anniversary treat with my family on Sunday, & what a treat it was. Everything we ordered was freshly prepared & tasted fabulous. All fresh produce, some of it very locally sourced. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food you get. I would highly recommend this charming country pub & will definitely be returning.

Whenever we go, this place is always busy no matter what day or time. This is simply because of the quality of the service and products. today, we had a sandwich. Mine, chicken salad with onion marmalade was simply delicious (who would think of marmalade in a chicken salad sandwich)? The other sandwich was prawn salad which I'm told was also delicious. Both sandwiches were at least an inch thick and no, that was not mostly salad, but chicken and prawn. My cappuccino was simply lovely. Add to this the staff are always friendly and accommodating, what else can anyone want?

6 of us ladies of leisure had breakfast in here this morning. Have been here a few times and they never disappoint. Food and service is consistently good. Run by a lovely friendly family. We all opted for omelettes ( different fillings) and they were perfect. Good coffee as well. Will be making this a more regular haunt . Can’t recommend enough

Poor. Used to be a lovely Pub to have a Roast Dinner in, especially on the Sundays the Classic Cars turned up! Today's Roast Beef was frankly nothing of the sort, tough, stringy and tasteless - I suspect it wasn't the days Roast at all, but some pre-packaged 'Roast Beef' slices. Apart from that, it's a nice, friendly, local Pub.
