The Grandison in East Hertfordshire

Outstanding quality Sunday Roast in friendly environment. From the start the staff made us feel welcome , the setting was comfortable and inviting. What made the experience memorable was the quality of everything that was on offer- the house wine was excellent, the rolled pork belly was the best I’ve had in years, I couldn’t fault the roast potatoes or veg. The home made bread and olives/olive oil/Balsamic vinegar beforehand were all extremely good. The team worked hard and had everything under control - well done guys. A great Sunday experience!

We visit the Grandison fairly frequently, always very friendly, great atmosphere, food and drinks. All year round venue, cosy dining inside and great out door spaces. Good value.

Really good food but just not as really good as the time before . Excellent menu . Friendly staff and customers . Bit upset couldn’t move tables even though it was empty the whole time we were there .

Salmon dish and accompaniments were good; the pie was good too. But mashed potato was nearly cold. Dessert menu could have included a crumble or another fruit based dish?

Fabulous pub with great good value food and great service. Dogs welcome too. Sunday roasts are excellent.

Nice Sunday lunch for 3. The beef was lovely. We requested 3 sticks of crackling and was surprised when additional charge was applied! The chicken was had to much seasoning on it.

Lovely lunch with friends after a 5 mile walk round Bramfield Woods. Pub more food than bar and lunch menu was a little gastro, but good quality and well presented. Lovely outside seating if weather nice. Would go back but probably sunny evening.

Beware: this place isn't as dog friendly as its website boasts. Booked for lunch and when I got there I was told there was no space in the dog friendly bar and we couldn't go on the empty snug. Disappointing.

Lovely country pub, great setting lovely atmosphere with more than adequate parking with a good selection of beers on tap.

We visited the Grandison on the 3rd September, the food was the best we have had at the Grandison and was excellent. Staff were helpful and friendly - recommended

We arrived 15 minutes late for which I apologised. There then followed a strange performance of moving, cleaning and laying our table. It was as if we were not expected or perhaps even welcome. The lady in charge made no effort to engage with us. This was a pity as the food, especially the fishcakes was excellent.

Super food and excellent service. Victoria very attentive, sadly poor choice of sweets on the set menu and Scampi in short supply! Otherwise a very pleasant lunch.

I would highly recommend The Grandison we have eaten at a number of hotels in the area and this has been by far the best. The food is excellent and reasonably priced, the service is friendly and all the eating areas are bright and clean without compromising the historic architecture.

Throughly enjoyed our day out at the Grandison, staff were extremely accommodating and friendly, food was great with some creative menu options, took me a while to decide what to choose. Will definately be returning.

Right, so me and the Doris went down here as it used to be be unreal, hadn’t been in a while so thought we’d try it out again. When we were appalled as I could’ve made a better on at home via a kettle. Disappointing and won’t be returning. Joke.

Fantastic lunch at the Grandison. A small menu but perfectly executed. We both had roasts on a Sunday and the food was great. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The brioche bread and butter pudding and biscoff cheesecake were spot on. Would definitely recommend a visit

Wow. A little place of heaven tucked away in a beautiful village. I live fairly local and cannot believe I have never been here until today. Came for lunch with a friend and was seriously one of the most memorable lunches had. The premises are so clean, bright modern but yet old beautifully decorated. The staff were young but were so attentive and lovely. Now for the food. Wow. Ok I had a fish finger wrap but my god it was amazing, really fresh and was the best I’ve had. My friend had the calamari and some vegetarian food which was brought out looking amazing and his comment was the best pesto he had ever had. So glad we found this little treasure tucked away in a beautiful village. Will definitely be returning soon.

Went out for lunch with my parents and young baby in a pram for my mothers birthday 16/08. We were greeted by a lovely waitress who could not do more to make sure the baby had enough shade while sitting outside. Super speedy food of really high quality! Great calm family atmosphere. Highlight of the lunch was when my Mum cheekily asked one of the young waiters (unsure of his name but he said he normally works in the kitchen) to sing her happy birthday, which he very sweetly started singing to her! Would recommend and will definitely be going back.

All good, but food portions seemed smaller than our previous visit (cajun chicken wrap). Toilets very clean, as was the whole place.

Me and a my family came to this restaurant yesterday for a Sunday roast to find out that there were no roasts left, there were a few tables after us so we can’t have been the only ones. They also ran out of bread which meant we couldn’t have half of the starters on the menu, it doesn’t stop there, they had run out of 2 other main meals aswell, extremely disappointing. I understand we came towards the end of the lunch but what I don’t understand is how a restaurant can run out of 70% of the menu, especially roasts considering that’s what most people have gone there to eat. Even if there was roasts there was only two to choose from, there are many other places to go with more options. I don’t feel like gambling on whether or not I’ll get a roast, won’t be returning because of this. But overall service was brilliant, good selection of drinks just don’t recommend coming around the last hour of service.

We felt ignored by serving staff. They were fine when actually serving.

Only popped in for a pint, while out on a cycle ride. The pint was perfect. Sat in the rear garden, and it was so peaceful. Reasonable prices and served by friendly staff. The interior and exterior is ready clean and tidy. Will be coming back again for food. Highly recommend!!

Food was OK but not memorable and does not warrant a revisit especially as there a large number of better options in the area. The one star for atmosphere is down to radio 1 being played on the music system in the pub while the average age (ish) of the dozen or so customers was 65!!

We hired out the Restaurant at The Grandison for our Ruby Wedding Anniversary celebration in July 2024. The team did an amazing job - outstanding service and food for our 40 guests all contributing to a perfect celebration. Thank you!

Lovely meal at the Grandisson this evening, in their sunny comfortable and relaxing back yard, beautiful flowers and bumble bees. The starter squid was juicy and generous, fish cake and fish of the day both well cooked, tasty and well presented followed by a lovely summery strawberry creme brûlée. Service was friendly, attentive and professional, trying hard to accommodate for our (misbehaving!) dog. I don't often write a review, but wanted to share this as this lovely place deserves a second chance.

Great local pub, with a very friendly welcome and super tasty food. We hade booked a table, but were given the option of eating in the snug, bar or outside (we chose outside). The bar staff ensured we had cushions (we were the only diners at the time eating outside), and nothing was too much trouble. Special recognition and thanks must go to Tristan, who was attentive, but not in our face, engaging, and ensured we were happy with our food and drinks. Thanks

Love The Grandison. Friendly & accommodating staff in a tucked away semi rural location. Great garden seating area for when the weather permits & plenty of niches inside for an intimate or social evening. Attractive menu with decent sized portions at a reasonable cost & the best Sunday Beef roast around! A firm recommendation from me :)

Only stopped for a pint, but the pub looked immaculate and the beer was good 👍

Almost every dish had garlic in it - including chicken burgers and beef burgers making the menu very limited for allergies.

We've been here a few times now and are always very happy with the food & service. It might not be the cheapest but it merits the small premium with the quality of the food. The vegetables are done just right and the fish is always flaky and fresh. The dog likes it here too with a walk through the woods on their doorstep although we make sure that he is kept out of the way in the restaurant.

My friend had the sea bass which she really enjoyed. I ate off the fixed price menu and was happy to have 2 courses but small portions. Am sometimes over faced by large portuins

Fabulous food in an out of the way rural location. More of a restaurant than a pub, but with lighter bites if preferred. We had a lunch with family in early June. Starters were really tasty. I can highly recommend the home baked ciabatta with olives, although pretty expensive. Enough to share between two. Between us (4) we enjoyed the Sirloin steak, the fish of the day, a burger, and the fish cakes. All rated delicious! We didn't take a dessert. With a couple of glasses of wine our bill came to around £40 per head. Recommended if you're in the area.

We live locally and had not visited before. We booked a table for lunch on a Friday and just as well as all tables were taken, obviously a good sign. Food was excellent and the service and attention was very good. We shall definitely return, highly recommended.

Table of 4 had lunch at 3pm today and it was STUNNING ! Beautiful menu and both service and presentation of food / drink was EXCELLENT! we will certainly return soon . Foods to review below are not current menu . We had mushroom and tarragon soup Calamari Olives and breads with dip Sea bass x2 Pork roast Burger Two rounds of drinks ALL 10/10

Unfortunately this is all misleading and inaccurate, and we were appalled when we read the menu. There is a big feature on offering only Argentinian steak, describing grass fed and high welfare. THIS IS ALL AVAILABLE IN THE UK, without the air miles and with much more reliable traceability. You should be ashamed of yourselves and we won't be returning.

Bank holiday Saturday early evening meal with the family including a three year old. Staff were very accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. We all ate very well from an interestingly different menu. Definitely shall return! They deserve to be busier than they were.

Visited the Grandison Arms about a month ago - after an absence of about 6 years - even though we live in an adjacent village. The experience a month ago was very good, which prompted a return visit today, having travelled back home from visiting family. Ordered a round of drinks, and then having looked at the menu, my wife and I both chose a buttermilk chicken burger. At the point of ordering, I was asked 'which' chips would you like with your burger, so I immediately assumed that the chips were included (as indeed they are in most restaurants) - I was offered sweet potato, skinny of fat chips. I checked with the wife, and we both ordered sweet potato chips. I also ordered a bottle of wine, and having done so, I asked to pay the bill there and then, which I think kind of surprised the waitress taking the order. As I sat down, I got a message from American Express advising me of the amount charged to my card. It was about £15 more than I expected, so I went to query it. The waitress who had taken my order said, Oh it is because you ordered chips, and they are £5.50 a portion, as she pointed it out on the menu. I said, but you asked me which chips I wanted, you did not ask me if I wanted to add them to my order at £5.50 per portion, so I assumed they were included. Then it got interesting. The waitress asked me if I wanted to cancel the chips and have a refund - I said 'yes' to which she replied, I will have to get the manager. A female manager came out and almost aggressively said 'do you want a refund?' - I said 'yes' - I should have been told that the chips were an extra - to which she replied something on the lines of 'I don't need this' and we ask all of our customers if they want chips with burgers , to which I further pointed out that they should tell them they are an extra charge. The manager then went to give me a refund of £11.00 - told me that she had refunded in full - but of course, and probably conveniently omitted to include the service charge that had been added for the chips we never had. As it happened the food we got was very tasty. As we sat outside, I heard other guests make comments about a smell. This same manager said it is nothing to do with us and we have reported it to the council. I get that. Thereafter, I witnessed her going to talk to another member of staff about those people on table X complaining about the smell - as if she was above it all and the customers were basically complaining about nothing. I have spent 50 years in top end hospitality. I know where good service starts and finishes - and with this manager - it is finished for me - not genuine - not sincere - taking the 'mickey' out of customers - should not be in the hospitality industry. we will not be going back again.

The food and service are outstanding! I travel to this part of Hertfordshire once a year and always precede a delicious meal at The Grandison with a walk in this lovely area. I am a coeliac and the menu is excellent! Delicious home cooked food. An absolute treat!

Wow what a find . From the beginning to the end of our visit . We felt v looked after . The service was impeccable . . Well the food was faultless . All the amazing tastes together . It was all seasoned . And potatoes were crunchy ( had roast lamb ) amazing roast . Definitely going back and taking my parents . . Thank you so much Victoria . And your staff

Enjoyed a good roast dinner here. Amazing beef. Negatives were only two roast meats to chose from, the lady who gave us our dinner didn't offer accompaniments so we had to go ask at the bar. An extra jug of gravy would have been nice to. It gets quite noisy in the bar area with locals so I would recommend the snug bar (we didn't know there was an option)

Last minute Easter Sunday they squeezed 6 of us in . They were fully booked and we thought it might be a bit of a squeeze but the team member managed to get all 6 of us on a lovely big table. Lovely atmosphere. Food yummy.. Staff friendly and happy. I had roast lamb. Big plate full of food with a big homemade yorkshire pudding. Dog friendly. Will definitely go back. They had a snug for a more quieter form of dinning...nice to know. Nice outdoor seating for summer months.

Great pub. Always impressed with the food and they not shy on the portion. We had the chicken burgers which were amazing. Can’t fault it!

The food is very good, and the service good, although they were slow to clear our plates and bring the bill. Background music was intrusive, so my elderly father had trouble joining in the conversation. Given that most customers were over 70 we can't have been the only ones with this problem. Not sure I'd go again for this reason.

Four of us enjoyed a Sunday roast here. The food was excellent as was the service. The pub is very nice in side with great decor and atmosphere. Def recommended. Parking can be a bit tight when it's busy.

Fantastic food - great selection for a lovely English pub. The pie of the day was outstanding (lamb and mint) and the chicken burger was full of flavors. Nice friendly relaxed service. Would highly recommend.

We had a really good lunch at this gastro-pub. The service was very efficient, friendly and professional. Our food was delicious and freshly prepared. The ambiance is lively. A great venue for a meal out.

10/10. We booked as a large group for a Christmas works party mid December and from start to finish could not fault the service we received. We were asked understandably to pre-book our food choices which was seamless and easy to do and everything was spot on when we were served on the evening. The choice of food was varied and the quality and portion sizes were excellent. The girls serving were all polite and attentive throughout our visit and worked so hard to ensure everyone had a good evening. Warm and cozy atmosphere, delicious hot food for all and a great variety of drinks behind the bar. Excellent value as well, we couldnt have asked for better. Already planning our next visit to sample the standard menus. Thank you!!

Great service and fabulous food. 4 of us booked at short notice and management and staff could not have been more accommodating. We will all be back!

Disappointed. Been here a few times and always enjoyed it. Came today for a drink after a walk to be told that you can’t order food unless booked a table. No problem, some crisps and a pint will suffice. Was made to feel like we weren’t wanted and they wanted the table back asap, despite the pub being at best 40% full the whole time. Was discussing coming here for dinner in a few weeks, perhaps not after today.

Now that original owner is back; wonderful food and ambience! Last time with previous owners they rowed with me because I mentioned how fatty the lamb was and it was expensive!

Visted this lovely village pub for the first time in years after seeing a ad in our Parish magazine Had a fantastic Sunday lunch A warm welcome on arrival very friendly staff The decor is excellent looks like it has been redecorated recently Toilets were absolutely spotless Starters ham hock terrine and smoked salmon and crayfish tian were both amazing Mains I had the roast beef and wife had the roast turkey both served with the best vegetables we’ve had with a Sunday dinner in years plentiful amounts of meat and very good gravy I had hoped to have the belly pork but it had been replaced by the turkey so will be returning to try the pork soon Thanks for a great meal and service

Great service good food and a warm atmosphere

It is several years since I last visited, haven't been back because it was atrocious! I only revisited because someone else made the booking. What a turn around. Now under the original management and really quite good. Service was helpful and friendly. Food was not only very good but frankly not too expensive, unlike almost everywhere else. I'll be back as they say if these are the new and improved standards.

Food nice but the Sunday meats were raw I don't like my meats like that and when we got home and looked at the receipt we were charged for mire drinks then we had, they gave us the money back without hesitation

Great food, must better than most. Excellent pub grub, high quality ingredients and well executed. We eat in most places in the local areas and i am happy to report the chef / team have really excelled. The food is of a very high quality and will be hard to beat. So if you want a nice relaxed evening out with good drink and high quality food in a pub setting - this should be on your list! Well done.

Thoroughly enjoyed an excellent 3-course lunch here today, choosing from the well-presented set menu. Food was of good quality and offered genuine value for money. The standard of service, as provided by a courteous & attentive young team, is particularly worthy of note : polished, and above the norm when compared to other pubs / restaurants in the area. Our second visit - and there will certainly be more to come !

We have been two weeks running for Sunday lunch and the reason for this is that it is really delicious and extremely good value. The roast meal is freshly cooked and it is as good as a home cooked roast - which is unusual to find in a pub or restaurant. Service and ambience also lovely. Would highly recommend.

Friendly restaurant. Nice food!

Nice spot for a drink on a summers day. Good tea and coffee if you're that way inclined. There's a playing field and swings etc opposite if you have energetic kids. Short walk up the track to Bramfield woods for dog walking etc. Brilliant for a nice meal - ask for the fixed menu!

Luvly location, excellent food, very clean establishment & very friendly staff ..... Would have awarded 5* but for slightly inattentive waiter. Highly recommend.

Second visit here in the last 6 weeks. The menu is lovely and the staff too. This visit was for lunch and the set lunch menu was excellent. Chef very helpful with one of our group who had intolerances to some foods which was much appreciated. Nice restaurant decor and outside garden area.

Such a lovely pub. I often feel a bit unexcited about pub menus these days - same old things. But this menu made it really tough to choose! Lots of interesting dishes. Very good value. Staff were friendly and gave faultless service. Beautiful quiet garden to sit in and indoors was immaculate too. Thoroughly recommend it.
