George IV in East Hertfordshire

Absolutely loved this place when I came with my family a few weeks ago. The meat croquettes we had for starter were incredible and then I had one of the best if not best roast dinners of my life! The pork was insanely delicious. (Only small issue was the fish dishes we ordered which were a little over salted.) great calm friendly service too. Will be back soon!

Excellent Sunday roast with the family. Great food cooked very well and a great menu. Tye service was excellent and we were all looked after very well, including the kids who had their own menu. Would go again as a treat

Not worth the price. Food was nice enough but portions small. The burger was more like a large slider and kids meals toddler size. Both my 4 and 7 year old were still hungry after the meal. Also felt it was unacceptable adding 12.5% service charge when we ordered and paid at the bar (nobody came outside to take our order), there was a significant gap between the meals being brought out and despite asking several time for ketchup, including at the bar to follow up on it, they eventually brought a small dolop of it near the end of the meal. Finished plates were also not cleared up from our table.

Absolutely amazing food with great flavours. Basic pub style furnishings but don't let that out you off eating here. Definitely would come back here, if I was in the area.

Fantastic food, and prompt service

Lovely pub but food is its main draw and it doesn’t quite deliver everything is a little overpriced and quality is average! Staff try but are all young inexperienced girls mainly service is ok however don’t expect to stop for a drink and a quick bite you’ll only get told as I was u can’t order food if you haven’t booked!

Went for a meal with friends and our respective children in tow. Really great food. T bone steak was cooked REALLY well. Lovely family atmosphere with very friendly and accommodating staff. Will definitely consider returning! Thanks guys for a wonderful Saturday afternoon meal.

Extremely rude and unprofessional waitress (wearing Nike leggings!) really let the business down. Did not explain the menu to us and we ended up ordering 2 portions of the steak which is a sharing portion, when we spoke to her she was unapologetic and very rude. We then didn’t get a desert, which we were charged for. The service was terrible, we waited 20 minutes for condiments to accompany our food, and an hour for the drinks we ordered. Such a shame as the food we did get was superb.

We wanted to celebrate our recovery from bouts of ill health and so had booked an outdoor table for this summery evening and arrived early as we wished to first enjoy a pre meal cocktail. It turned out that no table was available so we agreed to have a drink before we could dine outside. Close on 20 minutes later we were still not being served with a drink but the waitress advised us that they had messed up and we wouln't be able to get a table outside at all and that we could leave if we wanted to. She was clearly not bothered so we took her cue and left especially as at the same time some diners came to complain loudly to another waitress that they were still waiting to be served at their own table. To add insult to injury we noticed as we were leaving that a table for 2 had now been vacated but apparently it was reserved for somebody else... Funny way to run a business and although we were regular customers over the years we certainly won't be back now.

Superb food and friendly efficient staff

The food was very nice, Well presented, slightly small portions, now the negatives, there were 6 of us, so a fair size bill with drinks for the George to take in. But we were charged £1.60 per lemonade splash in lagers and £1. 50 for lime slices in vodkas. Most expensive splash of lemonade ever, apart from the West End. Hard to return again!

First and last visit to this dining pub , 2 seperate menus and can not mix orders all have to choose from same menu option and rudely point out from gentleman. (Manager ) his manner was sarcastic and dismissive. The toilets inside was dirty havnt been cleaned all day at least . I have never removed service charge any restaurant before but was so disgusted on this occasion felt I had to as was so disappointed and his attitude was frankly disgusting so rude and unwelcoming

Been visiting this beauty of a pub for 10 years.fantastic location. The best restaurant I've ever been to. The foods always fantastic. The presentation is fantastic The service is also fantastic. Its abit expensive but you pay for what you get. I've Never been disappointed. It's great Amwell after all.. Dog friendly too.

Went with some friends yesterday and we had prebooked to play darts, it really was brilliant fun, the darts was a laugh. We then had a meal, the service and the staff were really friendly, and the food was fantastic so tasty. The manager was really friendly and accommodating and a great asset to the pub. We will definitely be returning as the tapas looked amazing coming out of the kitchen, we had the steak to share and the cod and I can honestly say the best meal had in a long time. See you soon

There were four in our party. We were told very swiftly that there were 2 menus, à la cart or Tapas and everyone on the table had to have the same menu… So the deep discussion began which menu 🥴 Yes when you just want a nice evening out we had to deliberate between us who could eat what? The à la cart was a set menu either two courses or three courses. There were only three starters . The two beef dishes were for two people and carried hefty surcharges. Only two of us could find a starter that we fancied and they refused to let us have humus from the tapas menu . My husband only wanted the beef, but needed someone else on the table to have it with him because it was for 2. ! That was very uncomfortable because the other someone wanted lamb. Are you keeping up with this? In the end, two of them had beef 🥩 , but the size of it was was really for one . Two of us had the slither of cod on a slice of tomato . Told that the fish came with Jersey Royals but it didn’t (that was yesterday apparently) Eventually they arrived after we finish the meal covered in butter( I’d asked for no butter. ) We ordered bread (two little slices for £5) We had actually lost the will by the end. Choosing your meal is supposed to be part of the evening, but it was so stressful it ruined it. ‘You can’t have this you can’t have that. You’ve got to have this. You’ve got to have that.’ The manager knew that we were really upset and disappointed by the whole affair and took 50% off the bill however we hadn’t been out with our friends for many months and it totally ruined our evening. There were so many rules and regulations with their menu it didn’t make for a conducive evening..

Fantastic pub with food on the point, highly recommended.

We held our wedding at George IV and honestly the staff were fantastic. The whole day ran so smoothly. Chloe who is the wedding coordinator at the pub was amazing from start to finish. Pub is so lovely and the food is awesome. We would highly recommend having your wedding here. Thanks George IV

Such an amazing meal. Service was so good too. I would thoroughly recommend the George IV. We had a selection of tapas and the hummus with homemade flat bread, the BBQ aubergine, beef sliders and hot chicken wings were sublime. Wrapped it off with a rhubarb frangipan.

Good food and friendly staff, though a little incompetent. An extra pint of beer that no one ordered was brought, then a cauliflower cheese. However, instead of just taking it back the waitress said: "Shall I add it to the bill?" We were seated in a noisy back room, although when we booked we asked for the quietest seats because one of us has hearing difficulties. But the biggest complaint was the small portions. The burgers had only sliver of meat and a dab of cheese. One bowl of ravioli was about half-full, the other had only a few ravioli at the bottom. When the waitress was told, she said: "I'll mention it to the kitchen for next time." The ravioli was well-made and delicious, but with portions, service and prices like that, there's not going to be a next time. I say this as an occasional customer of this pub for more than 30 years.

Incredible Sunday Roast! But for me it was all about the Crème Catalan! Edit - came back and had the lamb, it was incredible and also definitely try the treacle tart and sticky toffee pudding!

5 * review for this lovely pub tucked away 2 minutes drive from Van Hages. Not an extensive menu but everything was well presented and tasted lovely. Just a note to the hungry amongst you, the cod was on the small side so do what we did and have the pre starter nibbles too….

It was a tapas night so we ordered lots of pieces. There was not a good selection for vegetarians. I thought there could have been a cheese or rice dish. All dressings /sauces very spicy too hot for me. The staff were lovely This was a treat gift from our family I would go back but I would check the menu before

We really enjoyed our valentines meal. We were greeted by the manager and then served our food by his exremely efficient and polite colleagues. The food was served promptly hot and very tasty. The prices are not hefty, so the George is not just a venue for the special occasion, we will definately be back, particulary looking forward to being able to sit out in the gardens on those warmer spring/summer days, although the real fire last night was a real delight.

Lovely country pub with delicious food. The staff and chef were very good at accomodating for allergies and everything tasted amazing. Would highly recommend this place. We can’t wait to go back.

Delicious food and drinks, lovely ambience, great service. Great food from the kids menu too. Would’ve been 5 stars but the food took a long time to come due to an issue with the printer in the kitchen. The staff were open and apologetic about this. Feels like a posh North London pub, could be in Highgate rather than Ware. Will be back

Bought Turkey and ham and side dishes via the Christmas Shop. Thank you so much all were extremely delicious. Attended yesterday for a birthday lunch and was so impressed. There was 8 of us and everyone had a great meal. The food was excellent, the staff very attentive and the atmosphere great. We will definitely return.

From phone call booking to dessert, the service was second to none. Spoke to Chris on the phone who was overly helpful to get us in at our desired time, despite large parties in at the same time. Even though busy, every single customer that walked in was greeted with a warm welcome. The severs were knowledgable on wines when asked and the food…..completely delectable and very reasonably priced for the quality, freshness and creative plating. I will recommend this venue to all and can’t thank all the staff enough. Thank you team!

Came here for lunch with mum. Very modern and clean, yet cosy and out of the way. Sat by the log fire and had fish and chips and mushy peas. Plentiful and excellent. Staff were kind and helpful. Only problem is it is difficult to park.

Didn't eat there (this time) but having seen what was coming from the kitchen while having a drink I will definitely be paying a visit soon.

Great front of house staff, amazing food though if you're a veggie/vegan it'll basically be a set menu as they go for a small menu done well strategy. Parking is an issue so pop it at the end or middle of a wall/cycle

Apart the food arriving very late after asking several times how long it would be, when it did arrive it was lukewarm. The beef was really fatty The young man that served us was excellent The other diners had no idea how to control their kids which were screaming so we all had to shout across the table to be heard

The service was excellent, warm, and historic snug feel with great background music. Feed was excellent - definitely have a the Bakewell tart…superb!

We went for a Sunday roast with kids and my aunt. The kids ate for £1 which was an absolute bargain. As usual the service was wonderful, the wine was amazing and the food was spectacular! We shared the 500gm sirloin between three adults and it was massive and came with loads of sides!

We have visited this restaurant several times over the last couple of years and it’s always been great so we chose to go here for my special birthday with the family and were really disappointed. Limited menu choice as we were a large group (13 people), the fishcakes were overcooked, the lentils tasted of vinegar and chips were overcooked. Really disappointing food. The service was good but won’t rush back. Such a shame as it’s always been so good in the past.

Lovely friendly welcome by Chris . We hadn’t booked and he was able to accommodate us. We were so pleased as the food is excellent. We ordered small plates of extremely tasty dishes. The chef is very experienced and he’s quality of produce , care and attention to he’s dishes is amazing !!!!! We shall return 🙏❤️🙏

Mediterranean Night on Saturday evening, friendly and attentive service, a good selection and variety of tapas style dishes on the menu, tried quite a few and all were delicious, certainly didn't leave still hungry! Would have no hesitation in returning.

Fantastic pub! Staff are always very friendly and the food is amazing. They change their menu regularly so there's always something new to try; don't forget to look at the daily specials board as well. The food is always super tasty and very well presented. Our regular local spot for great food, would certainly recommend you try it. You can also reserve your table on their website and advise of any allergies in advance so the chef is aware.

Went here for lunch on a sunny day so we sat out in the front garden which is really relaxing with calming background music. The service was impeccable and the food was amazing! It was so good we are going to return to try their dinner menu and Sunday lunch! Definitely recommend!

Good food, brilliant atmosphere

Took my husband and another couple here last Wednesday evening. Lovely setting, staff were really attentive and the food was delicious, I'd thoroughly recommend it. The crevettes were just so tasty.

Love this restaurant great food, great service and a beautiful pub the only downfall is the prices are expensive as some very posh restaurants in London for a pub slightly overpriced but apart from that I can't fault it a lovely place to dine in a lovely quiet location.

I brought two friends who are foreigners to make them try Scottish food. We were not disappointed, the food was delicious and we tried so many different things from the menu. We enjoyed every single dish!!

Best pub food in the area. Absolutely excellent.

Been to this pub many times with no issues and food has been great. However, I am shocked at how appalling my experience was today with the new tapas style menu. Took more than an hour to come out apart from one random mackerel dish, kids were starving as their food didn’t come out either and we had to chase up three times, it was basically a joke. They also didn’t take our deposit off of the bill initially and we had to ask for it to be deducted. Not sure what’s happened to this place but whole experience was rubbish and chaotic. Don’t bother going here!!

Stopped by on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Tapas style dishes and all very nice. Outside area comfortable, they haven’t crammed seats in like a lot of places which meant we could relax with plenty of space. £200 for lunch for 5, that included drinks and nobody went hungry.

The George the IV continues to be the one of the best pubs in herts. The tapas style dining has some fantastic dishes. The burger was a showstopper & on par with luxury dining. Selection of beers is also good including Cruzcampo & 1936 which is a Swiss beer.

Great find. We chanced on this pub by accident…it’s situated along a single width (2 way) lane and was a delight. Old Georgian(?) parlour type pub. Unglamorous but clean and run by cheerful, helpful staff. Food was faultless and super tasty. Interestingly offered a tapas range too. Would highly recommend this very well kept secret gem!

We went for Sunday lunch with another couple. We were shown to our table and, within minutes, were offered drinks whilst we looked at the menu. For starters we has garlic prawns and the crab tarte - all absolutely delicious. Then 3 of us had a roast dinner with all the trimmings ( the beef was beautifully cooked and came as 2 thick slices) and one had the roast cauliflower which again was terrific. The staff could not have been more attentive and helpful. Would highly recommend this pub !

Attended the curry quiz. Shown to our table at the back quickly. The service was good. The quiz master was hilarious and we had a fun time. Unfortunately the same could not be said about the food. Very overpriced and not very nice. The popodums were rock hard, the rice was cold and the chicken curry was watery, flavourless and full of wedges of tomato. Did not taste like curry at all. Tasted like a tomato sauce. Desserts were extra and not particularly good. The cheese board was better. We would return but only if we could order from the main menu.

4 of us met for Sunday lunch today, food was very tasty but very expensive. £28.50 for rib of roast beef - and only 1 slice! No starters, no alcohol and only 2 desserts with our coffee/tea = £164!! Very disappointed 😥

What a 'Hidden Gem'. Tucked away down a narrow lane in Amwell this pub/restaurant was a revelation. I attended this venue for a wedding reception that was held in a room at the back of the main pub.The room was of medium sized with subtle decor and nicely laid out tables. I have osteoarthritis in both knees and they can be quite painful on cold days - and this was one. I only mention this because I find it hard to get a chair to suit when I go out to eat. The staff were wonderful, they went out of their way - above and beyond- to find me a suitable chair for the evening. The service throughout the evening was friendly, quick and courteous. The food was tasty and well presented. They even made accommodation for the children in the group with their own set meal and high chairs where necessary. The toilets were clean and well maintained but I didn't noticed/see a disabled toilet or wheelchair access. The entrance to the building has a rather - for me - high step and another step down into the corridor to the function room where our reception was held. There is outside seating - picnic style tables, which I am sure would be lovely in the warmer/summer days. There's not really a carpark as such, at least not one that I could see, but there is some on street parking. Minicabs don't seem to have a problem finding the venue! I would really recommend this establishment as somewhere to come and celebrate a special occasion, or just to go somewhere different for a pint - the 1936 is great!

Expensive for size of portions served. Our meal was overcooked and they couldn't get a special dietary requirement for one of our guests right three times.

Although a little overcrowded on a Sunday afternoon this gastro pub has a welcoming atmosphere. One of my birthday party is vegan unfortunately no specific vegan options on the menu. My guest had to order potato skins and broccoli. Expected more as the mainstream meals are lovely. No vegan vegetarian options. Not good.

Just had a wonderful Sunday lunch here. Such a warm welcome and the smell of a wood burning fire! The food was superb and the service was absolutely exceptional! Nice genuine smiles, you could tell how happy everyone was to work there. Made for a lovely and comfortable time! Thankyou to everyone at George IV. Thoroughly recommend!
