The door was open, so I went in for a delicious bitter shandy. There was general chat, no beery swearing or staring, and friendly service. In an armchair by a cosy fireplace, I checked my mobile, replied to some messages and reorganised my bag. After my drink, I went back out to the bright sunshine, refreshed. I will go back again!

On a mission as a young pub crawler to explore the extent of Bass in pubs around the country. Popped in here while I was in Macclesfield. Good cool pint of Bass, much appreciated in the current hot weather we’re getting. Pub itself has plenty of decor and interesting furnishings to satisfy any pub crawler! And if Bass isn’t your thing, there’s plenty of other good stuff on tap which you can see in pics I’ll attach! Recommended if you’re in town and after good ale, good surroundings and good atmosphere!

Interesting pub with a lot of antique items inside, cosy, pleasant and a good smoking area. Had a pint of landlord which was possibly the best of that ale I’d ever had anywhere. A friend took me here for Sunday lunch. We were a bit upset to be seated on a small table that didn’t seem set up as a dining table but the staff moved us onto another table which was nice. The food on the Sunday buffet was ok. Nothing special and I missed a fish dish as it was all meat. The food was pretty standard Sunday roast and the bill was very good considering! I think they were a bit overwhelmed and at full capacity when we were there which made is less than perfect but they were very friendly and I look forward to going back when they’re less stressed!

On a night out with friends and due to the torrential rain we were working around a small area of the town. So back in the Jolly and there was a good atmosphere. Decent pint of London Pride and a good table. The Scrabble was sticking out on the shelf, crying out to be played. Unfortunately it soon descended into words like Ci and Qi before the 4 letter words made an appearance. Enjoyable visit.

It’s located on a busy main road going into Stockport. There is often a traffic jam at busy times and you sit and look at this large impressive building. It used to be a private residence full of books! A few years ago it was sold and renovated. One or two books still remain. It’s large and open with seating areas scattered around. It’s the Buffet that’s the main draw, Well! Cheaper than anything on the menu! Two sizes of plate small and large. Large WOW!! Usual choice of meat and huge Yorkshire puddings. Special dish each night. We had beef bourginon plus a couple of slices of roast meat, included. Well worth a visit. Plenty of parking at the rear. Very friendly helpful staff. Think it opens 12.00 - 9.00pm We went at 12.30pm. No dogs!

You can go off places and it will probably be a while before we return here. Leading up to this visit I'd been a little irritated by the noise, not just the loud music in all corners when you're trying to have a chat, but the group of shouty regulars that congregate by the entrance and like to swear a bit. On this occasion it was cold inside, a pub really does have to be warm. A Saturday, so no excuses. London Pride doesn't generally travel well but this pint had a nasty metallic taste. Moved onto something else that was really unpalatable. Unfortunately the 2 ladies who've run the bar when I've been in previously and know their beer, were nowhere to be seen. The young girl who was in and out of the bar hugging the regulars did a random taste test with one of the guys at the bar, maybe the owner. He was happy, we weren't. My Dad used to test beer for a living in his younger days. Time may heal the pain of this experience but for now we will be drinking elsewhere.
