The area is stunning and so much could be made of this place but the food was revolting. We had just done a long drive and had not realised that most food is not readily available early in the week or after 2pm so went to the cafe hoping to get at least a snack and take in the views. The menu was very limited ,the staff did not seem to know what was available and were more concerned with sitting chatting outside. We ordered burger and chips and were eventually informed this was a veggie burger. Having gone through the limited choices we settled on chicken burgers. These turned out to be chicken goujons in a bun with some chips in a plastic take away container. There was no salad, relish or pickles and we were informed they had run out of mayo but might be some if I searched through the other sachets which were just inside the door.. There was no cutlery ,no serviettes and I had originally ordered cheese for the beef burger but did not get a refund or any alternative offered. This disgusting meal cost just under £30 !!! As we left the staff were sitting out in the sun chatting with friends and one lady was eating ice cream from one of the big metal containers usually used for freezer storage. Health and safety? Trading standards? This place could be fantastic given the views and location but this might have been the worst meal we have ever eaten and price wise very poor value for money. We recommend that you avoid this place at all costs.

Good setting is the only positive.Overpriced tea and unpleasant coffee served by an unwelcoming girl.No atmosphere whatsoever.Would love to support local businesses but this place makes it understandable that visitors would rather go abroad for better value holidays.Litter strewn around the outside tables added nicely to the general ambience.Handy tip:take your own sandwiches and a flask!

A little overpriced maybe and it was a bit disappointing that my tea came in a takeaway cup. But this place is in a beautiful setting, and the lady behind the counter was so friendly and we had a nice little chat. Very tasty scones (but crumbly making it impossible to spread the cream on) but I would happy go back.

Over priced food and only selling pasties which you help yourself to and they are luke warm. Very expensive for what you get. Poor man in front of us asked for another tea bag for his tea and someone came round the corner (im guessing manager? Who wasnt welcoming or smiley) and told the server they needed to charge him for two Teas! Bearing in mind they were already overpriced! Wouldn't go here again due to the ridiculous price for lukewarm food.

My family and I visited The Jolly Roger for the first time this morning. Had coffee and cooked breakfast baps outside in the sunshine with the most exquisite view. The place is run by a lovely lady and her charming son was working along side her today. Orders taken quickly, coffee was amazing. The food didn't come out straight away but nor did we want it to. It was Sunday morning after all. Price-wise you may find cheaper alternatives in the area but for the location, the quality of the food and drinks, the service and the view, it was well worth every penny. Their menu is available online. There is a minimum spend on card, just as you will find at many other independently run places. I used the toilet facilities and they were immaculately clean with all door locks in working order. Parking was easy, there a few visitors spaces with paid parking adjacent. What I have read in some negative reviews was not reflected in our experience today in any way whatsoever. I would encourage anyone to try this place out, we could quite happily have sat there all day and will definitely be back soon!

Hubby got a potato cheese and leek pasty which was super tasty and the chips were absolutely excellent!! The lady who runs the place is lovely and very accommodating. You can sit outside and admire the stunning view of the sea … which is right next to the cafe. it really is a perfect spot to while away an hour or recover from a walk back up from the sand. We frequently visit The Jolly Roger as we love the position, the views & the friendliness of the owner & staff. There have been difficulties to overcome by the patron especially during & since COVID but throughout we have always received service with a smile & nothing has been too much trouble whenever we have visited. The food is good and many of the cakes etc are homebaked. Prices have unfortunately increased but in case people haven't noticed we are in the middle of a cost of living crisis & small, independent places like this struggle to keep open as a result. Fortunately they appear to be 'weathering the storm' so to speak & coming out on the other side.

Young lad serving not really interested. It seems this place relies on its views. I won’t be going back when I visit Portwrinkle again.

Even in Covid times they have a minimum £10 spend to pay by card - only place this week I have come across this when most places are encouraging contactless payment asked for the youth serving why they insist on £10 and was answered ‘ you don’t have to buy anything if that’s a problem’ !No competition in the town I suppose breeds complacency - won’t be going back

Having now read the previous reviews can totally agree. Given this is the onlyPlace in Portwrinkle and have a captive audience you would think all stops would be pulled out but staff (save one young girl) appear to be doing you a favour and quite slow. It is expensive too! The young lad passed up an order for 8 for breakfast as could not accommodate a very basic request. Hopefully owners will see review and train staff as the place could be amazing!

So happy to find this open when walking the coast path. Stunning views from the garden where we enjoyed a simple but tasty meal, lots of vegetarian options! Looking forward to returning for breakfast and the next leg of the SWCP!

Visited on a beautiful sunny winter’s day and enjoyed the view. The prices are quite steep, but we really enjoyed the coffee and the food we had. The service was excellent too. I imagine that it depends on who is serving by the looks of other reviews.

Nice lunch and friendly service. I’ve just read the reviews of this place and can’t equate it to our lunchtime experience today. The young lad who took our order was helpful and friendly and the young girl who bought out our sandwich and baguette order was a delight. The food we had was delicious ( simple sandwich and panini) but was accompanied by a simple garnish and nicely presented and tasty. Doggie friendly place with fantastic views across the sea. Would definitely visit again and wish you all the best for the new season. Susie our puppy says thank you for the free doggie biscuits

Oh dear, this could be such a lovely place to visit any time of year. The decor is lovely, the views are spectacular, but the service and food? Hhhmm The only cake was defrosted Victoria sandwich, I asked for a hot chocolate made with just hot water (how I like it). This seemed too much for the young lad serving to comprehend as he put some water but mainly milk in. As I’m fairly lactose intolerant, and there was no dairy free alternative this was not a good start. There seemed to be just too teen lads running the place, who were more interested in chatting to each other than anything else. Very expensive too for what was on offer

I was Very happy to find that the Jolly Roger was open for business on New Years Day. Myself and my partner walked in and upon querying we were told that we could still have a fried breakfast even though it had gone past midday. It was currently 12.30pm.So that was a nice touch and gesture.I had a fried breakfast, which despite the slightly expensive price only had one sausage. I think it cost £8.60 in all. Not a terrible price and it was well cooked and did just the job. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but possibly a tea or coffee included in the price would have been better. The real price shock was the £4.80 for the sausage sandwich?!? £4.80!?!? one bread roll with two sausages in. We were expecting a lot better. You do not mind paying the extra for independent, rural enterprises, but don't take the micky! Pasties I noticed were £4.80 as well..... debatable price. The views are excellent, there are seats inside and out and its a great asset to Portwrinkle. The staff were ok with us. Courteous if nothing else, but it was new years day.But you could see that it was staffed by students who are not renowned for their customer service skills and friendliness.

We stayed in Portwrinkle so this was a stroll along the road for us, beautiful views all the way. There are inside and outside tables. Nice decor, great pictures on the walls, good atmosphere. The view of Whitsand Bay beach and surrounding areas from the terrace is stunning. Good varied menu. We had a delicious crab sandwich each, very generous with the crab. Large car park at the side. Good value. If I was local, would visit all the time!

Sadly most of the other reviews are correct about the poor attitude, and lazy cant be bothered attitude of the staff who do not care about customer service. Yesterday I stuck my head in and asked what time they open. I was told around 10.00am but depends on the weather. Today the weather was stunning and me and some other customers sat on the terrace from 09.40. 09.57 I entered and was greeted with "we don't open till 10.00". I said the doors were wide open so I came in. The reply was "the doors are open for the staff and if you read the sign on the door it says closed". On the way out I noticed you could not read the closed sign because the door was open! Won't be going back the prices are dearer than central London and there is a nice new cafe 50m away above the golf shop called the Dovecote who greet you with good old fashioned service with a smile, friendly face and correctly priced drinks and food. The new owners have simply doubled the prices put in poor badly trained staff and are trying to milk the viewpoint they have. They have messed it up completely. As now there is a better choice a short walk away.

Very disappointing experience. Haddock was soggy and tasteless. Service has been very slow. Plenty of space for improvement. Not recommended

The beans were cold, the rest was barely warm, the mushrooms were missing ( I did report it but wasn’t offered any) I complained that the tea was hardly Luke warm, I got a replacement which wasn’t any better. The young lady was very nice and apologetic.
