As they've turned what little parking space into an eating area, we had to park 120 yards away in a field car park. No prices on the sandwich menu, wonder why! Opted for the belly pork "stottie" for the missus and the prawn and crayfish stottie for myself. Belly pork is fine with the rind for a plate meal but not for a sarnie, please remove the rind so we can try and eat it. The prawn and crayfish had little content except lettuce and tomato with a few of the cheapest, tasteless tiny prawns available. Both were £12.50 EACH, Shocking. The "stotties" were about 4" round and very home-made, give a miss.

We’ve visited the Joiners Arms numerous times over the last five years as we enjoy staying in the area. We have unfortunately found the food and service to become increasingly hit and miss. This seems to be reflected in the recent reviews, which we would agree with after our visit this evening. The menu served was different to the one online, and the food was of very average quality and just not worth the high price point. The desserts in particular we found disappointing. We’ve been long time visitors but will look to try other options moving forwards.

Dirty tables, poor service and expensive for what we had. Label themselves "luxury" but it's far from true. Will not be returning.

Went for Sunday lunch. The man pointed out where we were sitting but unfortunately it was beside a couple whose dogs were both sat up on the seats. I asked if we could sit in the dog free zone but were told there wasn’t one. I asked if we could sit at a different table as we didn’t want to sit beside dogs sat up on seats so close to our table. We were told everything else was reserved. The man seemed dismissive and irritated that we’d asked this and didn’t bother to ask the couple to put their dogs on the floor. The smell of dog instantly put us off and there was sand/ dog hair all over the seats which wasn’t a good start to the meal. We all ordered Coke or Diet Coke and when it arrived it was Pepsi. The meals were less than average. Beef was overcooked and pork was beyond tough/ gristly. We were given a discount as we complained about this but we were expecting an outstanding lunch. Service was also quite slow and some of the staff just looked like they did not want to be there/ weren’t very attentive.

We must have gone on a good day (looking at other reviews). Although we sat outside in the sun, the interior looked warm and welcoming with nice decor. Plumped for the crayfish and prawn ‘Stottie’ ( a huge north country roll for southerners!) which was fresh, fully filled and served with French fries. All in all, really enjoyed our ‘pit stop’ at this pub. Staff even came out to ask if the dogs would like some water - nice touch.

They seem to have lost the plot at this place. Ran out of cream for the doggy drinks, tried to order food but we were not allowed to eat at the table we were at, no others available apparently you can only drink at some of the tables 🤣 others couples were complaining as well. Perhaps they don’t need to try anymore. This place used to be our favourite across the county, now it’s a joke. Rudest staff ever!

My Husband and I visited both last night and this morning for food with our dog. We were staying up at Newton Hall for the night so we decided we would go to the Joiners Arms for a meal during our stay. We were seated and seen to straightaway, the staff were all friendly and service was great. We have been here for food before and it never disappoints, and last night was no exception! We had such a lovely meal and left happy and full :) We were back this morning for our breakfast, we weren't sure of the serving times and so we did arrived right near the end of service but the young lass who greeted us said it was not a problem and just that they'd need our orders in quick but they were happy to accommodate us. We both went with their full English and it was delicious! There was a little mix up with the order as I had asked for no beans and got no bacon instead, I didn't mind and was happy to eat mine without bacon but another member of staff came back with some bacon for me which was really appreciated. We've had another great experience dining here and despite what other reviews have said the ambience, service, and food were all amazing.

We have visited the Joiners many times, recommended it to friends, even taken friends for meals. I booked to dine at lunchtime - we’ve always booked as it’s so popular. When we arrived the pub was deserted. It was 12.45. We have never been before without the pub being packed and buzzing with a great atmosphere. The bar staff said it was quiet because it was the day after the bank holiday. We sat at our table and ordered drinks. However, as we looked closer, both the table and chairs were filthy, with food on the seats and in the edging around the tables. The table top was sticky to the touch. Other tables around were the same. We looked at the menu but decided not to order, put off by the dirtiness of the table and also a dirty smell in the air. When the server asked for our order, we explained we had changed our minds and would just be having our drinks. A few minutes later a female member of staff came to the table and we were told to move to the bar area as we weren’t eating. There was no one else eating in the pub. What she didn’t do was ask why the only diners in the pub, who had also made a reservation, had decided not to dine after all. So in case they are wondering, here is the reason - The tables are filthy and the pub smells unclean. We won’t be back and won’t be recommending to any of our friends either.

Arrived on time and shown our table where menus were waiting. Took ten minutes to ask for drinks and then a further 15 mins for food choices. Food arrived and was lovely, no faults there. Plates were cleared and we asked for a desert menu, had to ask again 10 mins later. Then 20 mins later had to ask for staff to take desert orders. 5 mins later we asked again. Deserts ordered, one arrived wrong however really nice. Lovely ambience, decor and food. They either need more staff or be much more attentive, especially for the cost.

Joiners continues to be hit and miss. Two out of four meals were very poor. The vegetarian pasta with additional crispy chicken had no seasoning whatsoever and was quite tasteless. The muscles as main course equally lacked flavour. Shame the staff tried very hard but let down by the kitchen.

We have visited this pub twice in the last couple of days. Very clean and lovely atmosphere with comprehensive menu. Food was enjoyed by us all on both occasions. Staff are predominately young and very helpful and welcoming. Nice outdoor seating area which we used on the first visit as the weather was kind. Dogs welcome and plenty of water for them.

Was really looking forward to lunch at the joiners arms but was sorely disappointed. Arrived in the middle of a downpour and howling gales so watweproof coat was soaking wet. Asked if there was anywhere to hang my coat as I didn’t want to warp their furniture. Young lad said no but offered to hang it in the staff cloak room then came back a few moments later and said he’d been told he couldn’t do that. Was left with no option but to hang on the back of a spare chair and leave it dripping on the floor (lots of other folks in the same boat). Ordered x2 chippy teas one with the scampi and one with the smoked sausage. Batter really greasy and sausage very over cooked - really rubbery. Chips were ok actually. Wasn’t asked if we wanted additional condiments so took 10 min to catch their eye to ask then another 10 mins to get some by which time food was cold. Not once did any one approach us to ask if everything was ok with the meal or if we needed anything. It was a Tue afternoon outside the school holidays in horrible weather so the place wasn’t especially busy. I really wanted to go and try it but partner wasn’t keen - was slithering on the day whether to cancel - wish we had done and saved ourselves £50. Nice pub for a pint but give the food a big miss

Our room was very small and with limited head room in places. The lighting was very poor. No hanging places for the suits and dresses and no full length mirror .Not really good enough to prepare for a wedding.Carpets were stained and the toilet seat starting to delaminate. What a find this was. Went for dinner with my daughter and coukd not have wished for better. Attentive service and lively atmosphere. Aided by the fact I'm a dog liver and there were plenty to make a fuss of between courses. Our meal was truly delicious. I had the most prefect hot and crispy scotch egg with a runny golden centre served with mango chutney and a mayo drizzle. Followed by crispy skinned trout with a creamy mustard sauce on a bed of finely sliced cabbage. For dessert the creme brulee was creamy and silky just as it shoukd be with a crunchy sugar crust edging on the burnt to give that proper caramellyness required to cut the sweetness. Brilliant chef. The best of it was, we aldo hot to go to breakfast where there was a good selection on the menu and a lovely spread of toasts and jams, pastries, cereal, fruit and juice to offer as well. The coffee machine was a tad ponderous but it did actually spout out a decent cup of black coffee to which I added regular milk as I'm never a fan of the more complex offering from machines. We are promising ourselves another visit soon to this gem of an Inn perhaps booking a Sunday lunch to try.

So, I was out for an evening drive and along our route we decided to get food, nothing too fancy just decided if we came across a pub, we'd pop in and eat. We came across the joiners arms after seeing the road signs and decided there's our pub and parked up nearby. The pub itself is lovely and well presented, you walk in through the front doors and it's warm and welcoming. The bar are has that traditional pub vibe and there's a dining room in the back that is not too over crowded or busy. I noticed especially how dog friendly the venue is noting that there were dog specific menu. So if you fancy a steak for yourself and your furry companion you've got options. We got sat down in a corner table which was nice and we were brought some water and given time to look at the menu. I am a huge fish and chips lover, so naturally my choice drifted to that part of the menu, but there were plenty of tasty looking options across the board. Although on the pricier side (£19.50) for beer battered Haddock and chips, I didn't mind this too much because it was a day trip out. My friend is vegan and she was over the moon that the menu items were clearly labelled and plenty of options available still. The service was surprisingly fast it seemed like on 5 minutes had passed between ordering our food and getting it. The food itself, was phenomenal. The haddock was huge, crispy and delicious. The tartar sauce was nice not too tangy either. My only complaint with the food was the chips, they lacked colour and with the fish stacked on top of them we're just saturated in grease the food alone, I'd give a 7/10. Overall an excellent experience. I will be venturing back during the day time at some point in the summer to enjoy the beer garden.

This was as overnight stay. Room was spacious with a lovely shower and a comfortable bed. . However the Joiners Arms lacked lustre and charm and there was zero ambience. . It could be so much more as it is well located and has a great catchment but it appears to be trading on a past reputation and cannot really decide its customer base or what clientele it wants to attract.. There was very little interaction from staff, no smiles or warmth and one got the impression that they felt as tired and fed up as the establishment itself. The breakfast was good with lots of provisions, but overall there is lots of room for improvement.

We come here every time we visit Northumberland, maybe twice a year. Has been a great place. However, this time, when we came in there were three staff standing by the bar and instead of asking what we wanted and helping, they kept talking between themselves. Not impressed, particularly as didn't know the answer to my question and had to go find out. Not impressed either that there is no longer a snack lunch on a Sunday.......If you want to know how to lose custom then this is the way to go about it.

This pub been on our radar for quite a while so on our most recent visit to Northumberland decided to check it out. What a disappointment! Both the interior and exterior needs a refurb as both areas are very grubby. The furniture is tired, furnishings faded and/or stained, paintwork caked in matted dust, chipped, wallpaper torn / scraped , decking and outside furniture dirty and in desperate need of pressure washing… and don’t get me started on the ladies toilets , just awful! Even the exterior signage looks as if it has partly rotted, poor kerb appeal. The ambiance of the pub was unwelcoming and it seemed a bit cliquey with staff only really paying attention to the ‘locals’ they obviously knew. Fortunately we only called for drinks but it was our intention to book a table for dinner for another evening so we were glad we hadn’t before checking it out first . I really expected this place to be something special especially with the price of the rooms being well above the average for this area .

Very overpriced for the standard of food we received. £6.30 for a lemonade and fresh orange in a half pint glass felt like robbery. Chicken salad was tasteless and lacking in chicken if I'm honest. Husbands burger was overcooked. We had waited an extra 20 mins over our table booking time and then an hour for food to be served. Would not return.

We have been eating at the joiners every holiday for a very very long time! The restaurant has not had a great deal of money spent on it in all that time... was good as usual! Crispy fish, nice burgers etc. The gnocchi with chorizo was a small portion for the price but tasty. The issue for us on the two visits this week were...the lack of acknowledgement on arrival from the bar staff who looked everywhere except at you until a manager came up to ask us if we had a reservation. We waited quite a while for anyone to attend the table to take drinks orders. Finally it's really cold in the restaurant while rain poured through the ceiling. There are a couple of real fires that were not lit that would have been lovely. Nice food, so we will be back... but it wouldn't harm if there was a reception station when you arrive and please get rid of the nasty broken plastic plants on the tables...you know the ones!! Come on owners give it some care!

The Joiners Arms has been on our radar for some time, as we couldn’t be bothered cooking towards the back end of our weekly stay we booked a table online which was straightforward. The decor is really cosy and the staff all seemed really friendly and we didn’t have to wait long at all to be served with drinks and our food order taken. We arrived at 1pm whist awaiting check in at Newton hall, which was 3pm and had also previously booked for dinner later in fhe day. We ordered stotties and fries for lunch. Sadly the stotties were bread buns and not traditional and the fries were greasey, hard and hollow. Although the filling was lovely. We ordered several drinks, including coffee but had to go to the bar each time to order these as the service was slow. Upon arrival for dinner we were shown our seats and immediately ordered drinks. These did not arrive and I again had to go to the bar to request them. I ordered the main of lamb ragu. When it arrived the portion size was much smaller than I had expected and more like starter size. I had finished it in approx 6 mouthfuls. When I raised this I was told the portion size was due to it being rich. It was very tasty, but simply far too small amd although rich could have been a larger portion. The hot tap and toilet seat in the female toilets were broken and water was leaking through the bay window roof which collectively showed a further lack of attention to detail.

We booked a family meal here for Good Friday. Our oldest son has multiple food allergies and I was told that they could cater for him as they have an allergy matrix. Unfortunately, when we arrived and asked for the allergen menu we realised this wasn’t the case at all. It took a good 20minutes of the staff running around for us to be told that the allergy matrix couldn’t be located. I would have thought that such important documentation would have been kept to hand. The staff obviously had no allergy training therefore my son panicked and decided not to eat at all to stay safe. Shocking that a restaurant doesn’t hold any info on allergies. I’ve also emailed them and had no one get back to me so the complaint mustn’t be that important to them.

We stayed at the Joiners Arms for 2 nights at the end of December and found the room lacking in wardrobe space. The bed mattress was low quality and had a topper on but didn't make the difference to a good nights sleep. Poor quality pillows did not help. We had a room which we were able to have our dog in with us. The rug in the bedroom was very worn and soiled. May be this is because it is designated a ' dog friendly room' but we would not expect a lower standard. The free standing bath is a nice touch but from a practical point of view there is nowhere to put soap etc. We unfortunately left our phone charger in the room and contacted the Joiners Arms to ask if it was found. I eventually got a reply from Teegan saying she would send a photograph of the one they had found. 3 e.mails later re-requesting the photograph and still not received. On a positive note the staff we met during our stay were excellent and gave great service. We initially didn't want to give feedback and just put this down to experience. However the poor service since has resulted in giving you an honest account of our stay.

Disappointing! - we stayed here recently with friends and overall found the establishment to be over hyped, over priced and underwhelming. It is in a nice location and the food was mostly of a decent quality but service was very, very slow, and not overly hospitable, with some dishes arriving cool or cold, which spoiled the experience - when the lead man for the pub and restaurant on the day asked for feedback he lent towards being dismissive and argumentative - strangely he invited us to register this for his daily report to support the fact he himself felt the establishment was understaffed! - it was noticeable during our restaurant visit that several tables in the main area received discounts on their bill for the poor service - we declined this offer ourselves as that wasn't our purpose, we were reacting to his request for feedback, which was quite diplomatically provided - the response he gave was not too surprising as he wasn't very welcoming from the off from when we first walked through the door earlier in the day to book in for the night, with staff seeming to be ill prepared or experienced enough to deal with the numbers they had to cover, with cutlery being repeatedly dropped in the restaurant on collection, with a knife actually hitting my wife's foot! - effective customer service training in general hospitality may ease some of these issues. Additionally, simple things like non-matching cutlery, serving dishes and glasses were the norm. Our room was of a decent size but cold and with a leak in the shower which needed a towel on the floor to soak up water and stop it from spilling into the main bathroom area - shower controls were lose (all reported to maintenance). The pub has no onsite parking with an apparently over zealous warden in the area which made dropping off and collecting bags problematical - car parking was some distance away in an unsecured public car park out of sight. In closing, whilst a dog lover myself, I will mention that for a restaurant with such a rating it seemed inappropriate to allow dogs to be fed on the table (not on the floor) with biscuits and ice cream provided by the pub, without being challenged - I cant imagine the food hygiene inspectors would approve of this conduct. Sorry, but based on this experience we wont be returning or feel able to recommend.

Staff were all really friendly Areas to improve the outside area where the hot tub is, could do with potted flowers, plants etc & the seating area cushions looked rather shabby it could be because it’s Winter & would hope that Spring/Summer this would be more appealing! We were disappointed with our stay in The Aln last week and have emailed the pub with detailed feedback but have not received a response. I also emailed before arrival to check some things about the room (because the room description on hotels.com was different to the website) and I didn't get any response to that either. The check-in experience was very stressful and there was confusion as we were asked to pay for our stay when we had already paid! Despite arriving at check-in time with a queue of other people, they didn't seem to be expecting us and the poor guy who eventually showed us to our room was rushed off his feet. We also had to pay £50 "to open a tab" which wasn't used for our food/drink and took nearly a week to be refunded. The room was small and could do with a refurb. There were cobwebs, the bath had chips out of it, the paint was chipped, and we didn't find the bed comfortable although that is probably personal preference. The room does have luxury touches such as a Nespresso machine and Temple Spa toiletries, and we felt it maybe was 5 star when it first opened but certainly isn't anymore. A lick of paint and some extra lighting and storage would improve it greatly. I had to use my phone torch to put my make up on! The food and service in the pub were good for both dinner and breakfast, and we really appreciated the prosecco for my husband's birthday, however we did feel the pub was extortionately priced - £9.50 for a glass of house wine!! Overall we did not feel it was good value for money and are disappointed to have had no response to our feedback.

From start to finish our trip to The Joiners Arms was honestly fantastic. The design of the pub was quirky, clean and really well organised. Our server, who I believe was called Megan (forgive me if it’s not- she had brown tied back hair, young, dressed in all black), was welcoming, kind, friendly and genuinely just a lovely person. The food and drinks menu had so much choice, especially with being gluten free. I was so amazed at how great the food was! Both food and drinks were served really prompt, were absolutely delicious and without a doubt the best gluten free fish and chips I’ve ever had! The staff members who were working went above and beyond to make us feel cared for, welcome and ensured we had everything needed.. their customer service was brilliant, and they are a true credit to the team (again, sorry, there as another male staff member behind the bar who’s name I can’t remember!). I would recommend this place so highly to anyone wanting a homely, delicious and hearty pub meal. I will definitely return when I’m in the area! Thank you!

I’m so sad to see this lovely place closed. It had great staff and atmosphere and a fantastically good smoked haddock chowder. I wish its people all the best and I thank them for all the great visits we’ve had here. I really hope that there might be a replacement cafe of such quality. We’ll watch with interest.

Our introduction to this country pub was to a spacious, comfortable, immaculately clean bedroom, with stunning views of the fells. Next dinner and cooking of Michelin quality. A highlight was the scallop with belly pork, a brilliant dish. Next morning breakfast, again flawless in every respect from the service to the produce. Any prospective dining pub owner/chef should come here to see how it's done.

My partner & I came here on Sunday for a spot of lunch we both had Fish & Chips ( I had salad with mine instead of chips) I have to say the fish was amazing I would say 100 times better than you would get at a fish shop. The batter was so light & crispy and the fish tasted so good. The staff made us feel so welcome happy smiling faces and we did not have to wait long before our food came I would whole heartily recommend plants plus for lunch
