I was greeted by "we don't cater for gluten free diets". Fortunately my husband was not with me, I was out with a friend. After discussing the low risk of cross contamination for me, I was offered two main course options and a dessert. Food was good and well presented. We had to go to the bar to remind them to take our order, again to ask for a desert and again to ask for the bill. At no time were we offered another drink, such a shame as sales across the bar must be really poor. Why don't staff get trained in good service anymore 🫤

Despite a temporary problem in the kitchen (which was completely beyond the control of the pub), we had a wonderful lunch in great surroundings, good food, good beer and a charming barmaid/waitress. Oh, and very good value too.

We wanted a nice place for lunch for a group of 4 to combine with a trip to Air Museum. It’s not super speedy but very nice food. Lovely home made steak pie. Strawberry & apple crumble. Great choice of French cheeses. Good range of ales. Superb historic pub.

Characterful pub. Adequate accommodation. Didn’t live up to our expectations. Disappointed with breakfast as only continental was offered at an additional cost. We think full English breakfast should offered.

Stayed here for a couple of nights. Its a very old pub with some rooms at the back. Very quiet. Rooms are very nice with modern bathroom. Bed very comfortable. Private parking at back. Choice of breakfast. Good quality food. Staff very pleasant. Reasonable price. I was here to visit the nearby IWM Duxford. A couple of minor issues. The vent in the bathroom is filthy and i found hair in bathroom wall that wasnt mine. Also heater needs attachments to wall fixed. Overall clean and highly recommended.

Very welcoming pub/restaurant set in a village. Good food in a relaxed ambience. Good wine list. There is a spacious carpark. For those in need of some exercise the John Barleycorn is not far from a decommisioned church with early medieval wall-paintings still visible.

The pub itself is super and the beer well kept and tasty. Unfortunately it all goes downhill from here. Not enough staff the day we went, the poor girl taking orders was rushed off her feet. To be honest the food was not adequate for any of us. My mashed potatoes was dry and lumpy. the carrots had not been "topped", the string beans were clearly several days old and the pie tasteless with a very thin gravy. I would go back but not for the food. I really dislike writing bad reviews as it can have serious knock on effects but I must be honest.

The wait for food was much longer because we arrived early, but not overly busy and a 50 minute wait ontop of the half hour already waited. We expected the food to be slightly better than reheated in the microwave. I think an extra pair of hands wouldn't go amiss. Felt sorry for the lady behind the bar, also doing the waitressing and assisting the kitchen.

Booked a birthday treat for my partner and found this historic (1660) pub in sleepy little Duxford. Pre-arrival Andrew emailed to let us know a jazz trio would be playing on Sat evening and would we like a table which was a nice touch. Jazz not our thing so a little prediction was helpful. (We actually ate in the pub both nights and it was a lovely experience!) On arrival, I noticed it had Greene King logos, and having not had any positive experiences in GK pubs I was immediately disappointed. Turns out Andrew and his partner lease the building and have created a lovely, low-key, simple, and unique environment and experience for guests. Do not expect sparklers, fireworks, and big welcomes, the vibe is understated! All in all (and having read quite a few negative reviews) I believe you receive who you're being when dealing with landlords and if you'd like Andrew to jump to it, you'll be disappointed. Allow him to quietly and gently go about serving you and things will be fine n dandy. Altogether a very good experience and one we will repeat next year.

We have been here several times before for our annual get together and had always received a warm welcome. However, today the owner/manager was very rude to us and would not serve several others who came in to have a meal even though there were plenty of empty tables . We came here for dinner on a whim with no booking and we were pleasantly surprised! Lovely traditional looking pub, with really friendly staff who were extremely attentive and couldn’t have been more welcoming. The food was delicious (get the Barleycorn burger and the fish burger) and we honestly had no faults at all. Please ignore the negative reviews and give this place a try as in our opinion the reviews definitely did not reflect our experience. Had a really lovely meal here. Then it closed, which was disappointing. When it reopened, I was really excited to go back, but the themed menu was very limited and disappointing. Stayed for two nights. An old inn built in the 1600s with a thatched roof and loads of character. The guest accommodation (four rooms) is in an adjacent block. The staff and owner were very friendly, attentive and provided a first class service. We had meals both evenings plus breakfasts - all meals were delicious and well presented. Great value. The room had all that we needed for our stay and had a modern and bright bathroom. The room itself was small and dark - perhaps it would benefit from a makeover but on the other hand it did blend in with the other buildings. Personally we found the bed extremely hard but it might suit others.Would recommend this accommodation and restaurant to others.

I came here with my partner. His steak, although expensive, was very good. I had an "aubergine" dish which was a shaving of aubergine accompanied by a bed of lentils. Initially when asked if everything was ok, we stated it was. I then realised it is better to be honest. I left practically all of my meal, and the waiter didn't ask me about this. Another lady took our payment. I was honest with her. Our original waiter came over and stated thats how it was and I could have more aubergine next time. That wasn't the solution I was looking for. This waiter was polite but I was disappointed that my complaint wasn't dealt with and I was £12 lighter for having a few vegetables and a shaving of aubergine.

Visited this establishment with friends for Sunday lunch and ordered the roast lamb. I asked for mint sauce, but don’t know why I bothered now. It was tasteless. My first thought was I caught Covid, as you loose your taste and did not mention the mint sauce to the waiters. I just wanted to leave as soon as possible, because anxiety was starting to surface. On the way home I asked a friend if she could taste the mince sauce she had with her Lamb, she replied it was very, very weak. That cheered me up, but I was very annoyed at the Incompetence of the kitchen staff to serve up a sauce with no taste. This lunch was not cheap and anyone would expect value for money.

We went as a party of 10 to celebrate my son’s and sister’s partner’s birthdays two weeks ago. It was horrible.Despite writing them a polite email explaining the issues we faced they haven’t even had the decency to acknowledge my mail so this is clearly a business that puts customer satisfaction very low on its priority list.We arrived shortly after 1.30pm and were led to our table & told that someone would take our order presently. It took 10 minutes for someone to come and take our drinks order and then a further 10 for most of the drinks to arrive (one of our party had been overlooked). We then placed our food order and waited a 45 minutes for the few starters (most of our party didn’t order starters) and then a further 45 minutes for the first meal to arrive. Then we waited a further 10 minutes for the next meal and in total it took nearly 25 minutes from the arrival of the first dish for the last to be delivered. The waitress then brought three jugs of hot gravy which was handy seeing as most of the food was either delivered cold or had cooled down while waiting for the rest to arrive. The Fish & Chips were bony and the Roast Dinners were awful. The veg was still raw on several plates, the Yorkshires were soggy below and stone cold on top and the beef was cold, overcooked (or maybe reheated too often), tasteless and terribly tough. I reckon my wallet would have been more tender! A less appealing lump of leather would be hard to envisage. The roasties and gravy were the only enjoyable part of the whole meal. The Seafood Linguine was served cold and was basically pasta with tomato sauce with a few clams and mussels, not a hint of the promised salmon to be found!By now it was past 4pm and having wasted the best part of the afternoon we were reluctant to risk further delay and disappointment over dessert and asked for the bill.To her credit, our waitress could see that things had not gone well, to put it mildly, and offered us all a drink “on the house”. This was very kind but most of us had had enough and just wanted to get home and see what was in the fridge. The bill duly arrived for £300 and having not been offered any discount (apparently this would have been above our waitress’s powers although she would personally have liked to wipe the slate clean) we duly paid and left as quickly as possible. All in all it was the worst dining out experience I have endured in years; as I said if it had not been for the friendliness of the waitress we would probably have caused an almighty fuss but frankly we felt sorry for the poor waitrons who obviously had to carry the can for a completely incompetent kitchen and indifferent management.AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!

The first time it was one of the best steaks I'd ever had so i had to order it a second time and it was equally as good. That's enough to prove that it wasn't a fluke and when I return I will have the same. Starters are also excellent and I'd be happy to try something different here very time. Deserts are fantastic too. Good ambiance for a pub and does have that cozy pub feel with fine dining on top. Very rare to get it so right.

This place was recommended when I had suggested a meeting place in Duxford. My satnave sent me the wrong way which didn't help and the car parking spaces are very narrow in a poorly lit car park. The place is pleasant, comfortable and dog and wellies friendly. The atmosphere was friendly and not too noisy. The food selection is very nice but the evening menu not overly vegetarian or vegan friendly. Our food was really lovely, 5*, plentiful, hot and tasty, though may not win awards for presentation. What was in my opinion crazy was the cost of drinks....a pint of lemonade £4, a pint of coke which was in a smaller glass than the pint of lemonade, £3.85 and a half pint of coke for £2.50. This is more than I normally pay in London pubs. Next time it would just be the jug of tap water!

We visited today for the first time in many years, and it will be many years before we go back. Do not eat in this pub! The salads were limp and tough, the soup was nearly cold, the Cajun chicken was overdone to the point of stupidity. It could not all be eaten. Not one thing eaten was worth the effort, far less the money. But the staff tried hard and the surroundings were very ambient. This has the potential to be a great little pub/restaurant. Someone needs to overhaul the kitchen staff and a decent head chef is required. The pub is sailing on its location and a loyal village clientele. It cannot do this forever, so make some changes before you become another one of the lost pubs of England. I did not check its food hygiene rating or its toilets, to be fair, but the food was so bad that I wouldn't return if they paid me to eat.

After a small negotiation, we were told we could have the full menu after all, but when ordering we were told our starters would be served with the main course if we ate outside. So we cancelled our starters. When the main course arrived, my sausages were overcooked, the gravy served with the mash thin and watery and our guests who had the Sunday roasts were also served with watery gravy. On the plus side, the table service was really very good, all staff were polite and attentive, so the review probably deserves 3 and 1/2 stars really

Stopped for a pub lunch on the way home from holiday in Norfolk. On the whole the food was great, very tasty but a little burnt. The service on the other hand was very poor. We were made to feel very unwelcome when we asked for a table for 7. Ate in the garden but that seemed to be frowned upon too!

We were meeting two old friends who had recently moved to Cambridge. We had not seen them for several years and we wanted some where convenient for both of us. We had eaten at the John Barleycorn but our friends had not.

Beautiful historic pub; helpful, attentive and friendly staff; gluten-free options highlighted in red on a printed for me menu. The outdoor space is very nice with lots of benches but overlooks the car park and lacks any green grass.

I have been coming here for a couple of weeks every year since 2014. The rooms are a good size, perfect for sleeping in. The food is even better with the option of the classic pub menu and specials that change every week. I have been to every pub and restaurant in the area and would rate the Barleycorn with the best grub and for a good price. Steve, Mon and the staff are most welcoming and I would highly recommend staying here.

I wanted a traditional place to stay near the Imperial War Museum in Duxford and found the John Barlycorn Inn. The website showed it was a quaint picturesque pub, restaurant and inn and that is what I found. Low ceilings and lots of old wood greeted me when I walked in. It was most charming. The food was excellent, lots of varieties of ales and wine with dinner. The staff and other patrons were delightful. My room was a bit small (as they often are in Europe) but well appointed and clean.

Attended today for lunch following a flight back from Spain. Haven't been before but found that place following a quick search on TripAdvisor and seeing this was number 1 in the Duxford area.

Our first visit to the John Barleycorn to celebrate my retirement earlier in the day. My wife had the chicken supreme (gluten-free) and I had the pie of the day (chicken, bacon & Stilton a). Both meals were cooked very well, hot and very tasty. For afters my wife had the gf sticky toffee pudding, I had the apple and raisin crumble with caramel ice cream. The service was attentive and friendly- no hesitation in recommending.

The building was impressive from the outside and the interior didn't disappoint. We had chosen the venue to meet up with friends, so wanted it to be right. There were five of us and we were all pleased with our choice of food. The staff were friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back. Excellent value for money.

Called in the hope of getting food, but timed it badly - and almost all tables were reserved for later anyway. Beautiful surroundings, polite staff, good ale and an enticing menu. We'll be back to check the food!

Wanted to search out this historical beauty and wasn't disappointed. One half of the pub is rich dark red with big fireplace, second is light bright and airy. Good real ale and wine choice. Didn't eat as only a pit stop so can't comment on food. Loved the recycling of gin bottles.

I say a find, but I have been here twice before! It is a lovely old country pub, fabulously friendly staff, and a really interesting and good value menu on offer. I met up with 6 colleagues here and no problem with booking a table earlier. Quick to reply on an email booking. The meals were served within seconds of each other, with a smile. Try the fish cakes. Great.

Called in for lunch, very prompt service and ordered quite quickly. The food came out fairly quickly also. I had a sandwich which looked very unappetising. There was no colour on my plate it all looked very beige. Why not put a salad garnish to add some colour, having said that it was quite tasty. My partner had sausage and mash which also looked quite beige, why not put a carrot or another colourful veg to brighten it up, it tasted ok though. The waiter very attentive.

Well you talk about a sleepy village pub with a bit of a reputation as a yo yo pub....Not any more...! Just had one of the best Italian meals outside Italy...lie not! Simple ingredients,no frills no arty food this is simple wholesome Italian food at its best, and it's a plateful! Fabulous pasta and chicken dish matched with a cracking red wine at a very reasonable price. Great atmosphere, easy going friendly staff. I was back in the Italian countryside where I spent a lot of time near Torino and Modena when I ate here tonight...that good. Worth a visit trust me. And....you must try the Lemonchello milk drink.. It's a family secret....and ...I have only had one this good in Modena. This a little bit of good old fashioned Italian cuisine and hospitality in the Cambridgeshire Countryside and its bloody fabulous. Return we shall...

We brought our two children on a whim one early lunchtime on a Saturday in December, knowing that it was very much a gamble whether we would get a table without a reservation. As we arrived just before 12.30 they kindly fit us in before a 1.30 reservation. This gave us plenty of time to enjoy the excellent fish (accompanied by only ok tartare, curry sauce and crushed peas) and chips and burger. The children's pasta and pesto were less of a hit, appeared unseasoned, though this may be a bonus to very health conscious parents who don't give their children salt. I bet the decorations with miniature Christmas trees throughout looks even nicer at night. All in all a pleasant experience.
