The Jack In The Green Inn in East Devon

Overall the food was good quality, but served not piping hot,but when told to the waitress,were met with stony silence,no so sorry, collected plates and left,at least we had a nice cheerful waitress taking our dessert order, on that it really wasn't a real rum baba,more a sponge with little flavour very disappointing.

Magnificent lunch here today, including a celeriac, mushroom and leek pie with blue cheese mash; and succulent and butter-tender loin of wild venison with hasselback potatoes, red cabbage and celeriac. Three courses with wine for under £100. We will be back!

We’ve dined at the Jack for several years, and have always had exceptional food, but sadly last night it wasn’t great. Starters were lovely, but the chicken in 3 of our main meals was overdone and dry, and the steak that one of our party ordered was cut into strips, and was swimming in a sauce, which would’ve been best served on the side in a jug, not the best. We also felt that the staff were a little abrupt/short, especially when ordering drinks, when we asked about lagers, the waitress just told us to look in the drinks menu. I guess we’d wrongly assumed she/they would’ve known. It didn’t feel as if a lot of care was taken when placing our food either, my main meal was plonked heavily in front of me. Overall, an ok experience, but not one we intend to repeat I shouldn’t think, which is a real shame, given the many times we have visited over 2 decades or more.

Surprisingly large establishment providing many covers, food was good with a mix of a la carte and pub-classics; traditional menus overall. Amuse bouche and bread provided Plenty of parking, amusing illustrations, retro soundtrack.

Fantastic Sunday lunch, the food was amazing. Definitely be back. The staff were so lovely and attentive. The meat was high quality and omg the roast potatoes were out of this world!! Would highly recommend, we took two friends for their birthday.

Had another fantastic roast here today, the food is incredible and I eat out at alot of a la carte restaurants ! Come try it, you won't be disappointed 😉

We had a very pleasant family dinner here. A friendly welcome and shown to our allocated table. Drinks served and we all chose starters. I enjoyed a smoked salmon and shrimp salad followed by a delicious fish pie with a selection of fresh vegetables. Only two of us had room left for dessert. We all had one of our best meals of 2024at a very reasonable price. Quality of the food and presentation outstanding with excellent table service. We would unreservedly recommend this restaurant where everyone has a passion for service and quality. Rare to find these days.

Great food and excellent service

Popped in on the off chance of getting a table. The staff were excellent and found one in the front room. Not overly hungry but fancied something light with a pint. The Dart's Farm burger and a pint of draft Guinness certainly did the job.

Visited for a Sunday lunch and was hugely impressed. A roast is not easy to get wrong but difficult to take to a higher level. The Jack’s lunch was exceptional with everything excellently cooked. The beef, chicken and deserts were fantastic as was the service. Very impressed - thank you.

Cant wait for this to be our local! The staff and food are second to none. Sunday early evening we called in for something to eat and left speechless! Pea and mint soup/crab and prawn linguine to start - 5* Sunday roast lamb/haddock fish cake for main - 5* Couldn't fault 'The Jack' and cant wait to go back to try some more of the menu

Fantastic food for slightly more but worth the extra cost

We went for a Sunday roast and this was perhaps the best roast I've had in many years. The meat was cooked to perfection, there was a good selection of vegetables that still had crunch to them and the presentation was fantastic. On top of that the service was exceptional! I was too full for dessert but the pork terrine starter I had was so yummy. The loos were clean, and for me the 80s music was an absolute winner, but perhaps that wouldn't be everyone's choice. I highly recommend this pub, and if I'm ever within 20 miles of the place I'll be back.

We come here as often as we can as the food and staff are excellent. Yesterday we tried the tasting menu with wine as a change and we were really happy. It was still good size portions and the pairing of wine excellent. The staff explained each course and wine so a really great experience. The food is always amazing and staff really friendly. This is one of my favourite places to eat.

First time at this great place after recommendation from colleague. We really enjoyed the evening good service, nice atmosphere and surroundings and fabulous food. We will be back.

We had a fabulous family celebration here last week . The staff were attentive and friendly . The food was fantastic! Top marks to the chefs .Best meal ive had in a long time . They made it extra special by bringing out a birthday plate with sweets and a candle to blow out. A lovely touch for my daughters 21st . Thank you for a perfect evening . The braised beef cheek was to die for!

Excellent Food and Customer Service

10 years ago I had one of the best meals I’ve ever had. I had an opportunity to go for dinner with my partner and was looking forward to going again. My partner’s Risotto starter was just an unattractive stodgy mess but the mains we atrocious. My fish was hideously over cooked, the sauce had been so diluted by the veg that it was one of the blandest things I’ve ever eaten. I had one mouthful and refused to eat it. My partners pork belly was even worse. The presentation was shocking. A huge bowl of rice with barely any sauce and again, massively over cooked, dry pork. When we said we aren’t eating it we were told that 7 people had ordered it at lunch time. I fail to see what bearing that has on anything but I don’t expect to pay for food that I can cook better at home. We left and went to another restaurant. 45 minutes of travelling each way and what was still a significant bill for 2 starters and a few glasses of wine. When people think that the food is so poor they don’t want to order anything else, you really ought to do something more. Not paying for mains was a given. Wasted time and a poor experience shouldn’t be so overlooked. If you’ve heard the great things of the past, unfortunately it’s not the case any more. Real shame

Well done the Jack. We had a brilliant afternoon with great food and stunning Yellow Hammer. So well organised and a great atmo. Returned for lunch today and the food was stunning. Grilled goats cheese, duck confit, chicken breast. All superb lovely service and delicious Otter Ale.

We visited on Saturday evening. We booked a table for 8.30pm. It wasn't full at this time and was a more relaxed atmosphere. The food was amazing. My husband had the venison, and I the duck. Both were cooked perfectly 👌 Starters were very good, chicken terrine and a mackerel one. Desserts were amazing, too. Friendly, efficient service. Definitely recommend 👌

I called into the Jack of green just before Christmas for a light lunch unfortunately it was very busy with Christmas party bookings still I ordered mutton pudding with capers which came with five assorted vegetables also fresh bread and butter on the table the only downside to popping in with Christmas parties was it took over an hour for my lunch still I did enjoy it it was worth the wait 😎

Wonderful warm welcome - sensational food, flavours and portion’s absolutely brilliant. Wonderful wine selection and attentive and efficient staff - absolutely amazing experience- could not recommend higher.

A beautiful setting and excellent food. The owners and staff are very attentive and cater for every requirement. We attended for a family 90th birthday and our group included all age groups. The youngest was thrilled with a tour of the kitchen and received a cool book which she is over the moon with. Really could not ask for better service. Whilst the website (at time of visit) makes no mention of catering for vegan or vegetarians they do have a dedicated menu. We only found this out through contacting the restaurant so if you have dietary requirement do get in touch as we would have gone elsewhere based purely on the website. Mentioned this to the owners and they take have taken onboard the comment. All in all, a great dining experience.

Haven't been here for a while but my kids remembered the Jack does THE best french fries in the world! So kids menu for them with fries. Yep, their fries are still fantastic. I had pork belly from the specials menu and my word.. I've had some great pork belly but this was another level. Superb.

Visited The Jack in the Green for Sunday lunch whilst staying nearby. Can’t fault the service or the food. The best roast dinner we’ve ever been out for! The pub itself is warm and well decorated, spacious and clean. The staff are very professional and polite but friendly. Will definitely be going back when we are in the area again.

Love this place, but the Turkey lunch we had on 22nd December was very disappointing, hardly any turkey and it was swimming in gravy.

Expensive but food pretty good ... The menu needs more variety

Wonderful food and attentive staff. Forgot to take photos 😞 but I had the pate, which was the smoothist pate I've ever had, followed by Roast beef and cheese & biscuits. I will certainly be returning and the £15 voucher received on the way out was a lovely insensitive.

One of the best UK restaurants I have eaten at this year. Outstanding food, interesting menu, lovely staff, cosy venue. Presented beautifully. About £40 a head for three courses plus a few bonus tasters. If there's better food for the same money in England, I've not found it yet!

Service was great, food was outstanding and the cocktails superb!!! The food really was the star of the show, absolutely superb.

My advice would be don't go in the winter the pub was cold & there appeared to be little to no heating on. When we quarried this we were told that it was a very cold day, the only radiator there was not working ,with only one small electric fire. Not at all welcoming considering the prices charged, the meal was good but it is not some where we would go to again.

I just wanted to say what a lovely place this is. I'm in the area for a family event and happened to stop here, just to kill abit of time, and I'm glad I did. I had the delicious carrot and lentil soup to start, and for main I had their fish pie. The food was absolutely lovely. The service, second to none! I well and truly landed on my feet coming here. Should I visit this region of the country again I will be delighted if I have the opportunity to come here again. Thank you.

This was a first visit but certainly wont be the last. The Pub is quite large but very inviting. It was tastefully decorated for the Christmas period. A friendly welcome and a relaxed atmosphere. The food and and service are top notch. Locally sourced produce meant out mains of Steak, Trio of Lamb and Burgers were as good as you will get any where. Mouth watering...and great value. Plenty of parking. Whats not to love about this place. Well done the Jack in the Green see you again soon.

Bit disappointed. Service slow and roast chicken was an overcooked chicken breast with some bang average spuds and over garlicky broccoli. Chocolate brownie just from morrisons....

I really cannot fault the food in this restaurant we have been twice one for evening dinner second for Sunday lunch and the food was excellent. But I am afraid there is no atmosphere whatsoever service was by young girls who want to get you served and cleared as quick as possible . It's such a shame but won't be coming again no experience you do need a host and someone taking an interest in your customers !!!!!

Excellent from the easy parking, friendly welcome, drinks on comfortable and elegant leather sofas while ordering the meal. Excellent quality of service and food down to a selection of petit fours with coffee. Top class highly recommended.

We where going to a funeral up the road and not knowing the area arrived very early and in need of a coffee. The welcome was lovely we enjoyed our coffee then asked what was the soup of the day as we thought that would be a good idea before heading to the funeral. BUT when we asked about the soup Morgan gave us the menus and said that the kitchen opened at 12 and she would get out order in so we would have time for a meal rather than a snack. Brilliant one fish and chips and sausages and mash we left very happy people. A BIG thank you to Morgan and the chef.

Well worth going to. Very good food. Great choice. And as always, would I go again? Yes!!!

Treated by my wife for a birthday lunch this week. Ate in the restaurant mid week. As good a meal as we have had anywhere. Both Venison and duck as mains were delicious. Reasonably priced given the high standard. . £120 for 2 of us with 3 courses including drinks. Service was very good and attentive with atmosphere perfect for a special occasion. We will be back.

We went here last week for my dad's 60th birthday and our experience was outstanding. From the moment we arrived we received a warm and friendly welcome and the food was amazing. Big thank you for making my dad's birthday meal so special 😊

We have been here a few times in the past and recently visited twice, every time we have been very happy with the food which is always very well presented and very tasty, a wide selection of food choices and the service has been very good Definitely recommend

Went to this pub as it’s within walking distance. Sat outside as a nice evening. Don’t go out much at all as always tired due to getting over bowel cancer. Had a few drinks plus food. The food is very good but very expensive. Prawn cocktail very small for £9.50 and pudding £8.50 but that’s why this place is a treat place not an every day place. We got there just after 6 and left at 8.45 and for a Friday night saw hardly anyone go in or out, think that says it all regards the pricing. Anyway we finished and we always play a game of guessing the price. When we got the bill was abit more than we guessed but thought never mind and my husband can’t see properly without glasses so he paid the bill without me checking. When we got home I re- checked it and we had been over charged for 2 drinks we didn’t have. I had 2 but was charged for 3 and he had 4 but charged for 5! We therefore paid £10.50 more than we should have. He phoned straight away to ask to speak to Miranda the manager but she was too busy apparently, when it was dead and I think that’s extremely unprofessional to not even take our number to get back to us. My husband went up the next day to explain and she acknowledged one drink , mine, was incorrect and said he could have a free drink instead , but alas wouldn’t admit the other drink was wrong, which it was! I was counting drinks for us both and they added £10.50 in for 2 drinks we didn’t have. I’m very angry and upset she wouldn’t admit their wrong doing and personally will never go there again, you spoilt my night out!

Service great, didn’t have to wait long between courses, complimentary bread was delicious. Food tasty, I had the chicken , thought it could have been sliced rather that have a huge chicken breast ( and it was large) plonked in middle of plate. Shared a fondant chocolate tart dessert also delicious.

Excellent lunch!! We chose from the Specials menu : the crispy chilli beef was delicious, and portion size was good. The sticky chicken salad was very tasty, loads of meat, and I loved the watermelon in it - made it really fresh and light! The pub itself is very spacious and well-laid out, and I love all the very witty pictures on the walls! Staff were all very warm and friendly and service was spot-on. Will certainly return again!

Having relocated to East Devon from Oxfordshire some 10 years ago we have struggled to find the same consistency of quality 'eateries' we were accustomed to. Numerous people have recommended 'the Jack' over our time living here so, after 10 years we decided to give it a try. The occasion was my wife's birthday so we opted for Sunday lunch and what a delightful experience it turned out to be. Beautifully, tasteful and unfussy decor with lots of space around tables was an immediate positive impression with a smiley welcome from staff who were all well informed regarding foods and wine. Absolutely gorgeous/delicious soup as a starter with oodles of wonderful home made bread followed by the very best Sunday lunch We have had in way over 10 years. All came at a very reasonable price, including an impressive large and varied wine list. Also some really interesting and varied group of friendly, amicable fellow diners who reciprocated our joys of being there. Thank you Jack in the Green. What a gem you are!

Omg, this place is amazing. We popped in for a quick bar meal rather cook at home. Quality food, cooked well and priced accordingly. Some excellent wines with service to boot. The efficiency of some of the staff made the dinner almost rushed and the service a bit cold, sorry ladies. And the fish pie was lots of watery mash and a distinct lack of fish; so disappointing as a long time ago I had several fab meals here.

Took my mother in law here for a birthday lunch. Delighted I chose this restaurant as I don’t know the area around East Devon well. Food was very very good with a wide range from pub classics like fish and chips to more imaginative dishes such as cod and black olive gnocchi and so perfect for a group with differing tastes. Service was faultless. Warm, hospitable and thoughtful - to the extent a waitress picked up on a conversation about the birthday and arranged for a charming surprise which bowled over my mother in law. Thank you
