Our family Sunday lunch yesterday was a disappointing experience. Although the staff tending us were working hard to please us, it was clear by the appalling service that there weren’t enough of them. We waited over an hour for our lunch and the vegetables and gravy were slow to arrive after being given our plates with our meat choices. The gravy for the two vegetarians arrived when most of us were half way through our meal. We were given the menu for desserts and made our choices. After half an hour of waiting for someone to take our dessert order, we decided to abandon the idea as it seemed hopeless. We paid and left. Such a shame as the food was good and the desserts did look enticing as we saw them arrive at other tables.

We used to go to the Holy Hill Inn years ago when we lived in catterick but haven't been for a while as we moved to Darlington......we picked our granddaughter up (who's 3) for the weekend and thought it would be nice to go again for a bite to eat. When we arrived there was a group of lads in the lower bar area enjoying a drink after they'd presumably finished work. The top area of the bar was quiet, so we chose to sit there. The menu wasn't as extensive as it used to be, but we had a look at what was available. We chose the camembert to share, and I went for the beef baguette and my husband chose the cheese and onion one. Both came with salad, chips and coleslaw. For the granddaughter we chose pizza, chips and salad. While we were looking at the menu, the lads in the lower bar were in good spirits. Unfortunately, the language coming from them was very colourful. For example, in one sentence there was f******, b****** and c***! This wasn't isolated, and there was no attempt from the staff to ask them to mind their language as there was a small child present. I took the granddaughter with me to order the food to make it clear to them that a 3 year old was present. This didn't stop them, and the expletives continued. When I ordered the food I asked if the kids pizza could come with our starters. Not a problem. So our starter arrived, but no sign of the pizza. It did eventually arrive nearly 10 minutes later, with the waitress saying that the oven had turned itself off! Or maybe the chef had forgotten? Our camembert starter wasn't hot, but warm. This might be because either the oven hadn't been turned back on or (more likely) because of the big dollop of cold Branston Pickle that had been dumped in the middle of the melted cheese. There was no mention of the dollop on the menu, and as neither of us liked pickle we spent the next ten minutes (while waiting for the pizza) scooping what we could out of the cheese. Why present it like this? There was a huge bowl on the side anyway, so we could choose whether to have pickle or not! Anyway, our baguettes arrived. Mine was crispy, and maybe over baked a little. My husband's was bordering on burnt - a very dark brown in colour, and way too crispy. They weren't fresh, but the ones you can buy from the supermarket and bake at home in the oven. The beef was okay, nothing special. My husband's was melted cheddar with a touch of onion. The chips were nice - proper homemade chips. The salad was average, with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. The coleslaw was alright, but probably purchased in. Not once were we asked how our food was, not even when we went up to pay. The language continued from the group of lads by the bar, and none of the three female staff seemed to bother about it. This pub has certainly gone down hill - the food was very disappointing - calling it mediocre at best would be an insult to anything else that was mediocre. The staff didn't seem to care and lacked any kind of customer service skills. If they would have taken a few seconds to ask us how things were we would have told them. Just under £50 including two rounds of soft drinks was probably £20 too much. If you do decide to visit, don't take your family - instead put your best Adidas top on and go with your mates. Don't bother ordering any food as clearly nobody knows how to work the oven

Visited here whilst on holiday after reading the reviews. Went on a Sunday for a roast… very disappointed! The beef was as tough as old boots-overcooked, dry and cut too thick. veg was under cooked.. mash lumpy n dry, roast potatoes were as if they’d been microwaved and were undercooked in the middle, Yorkshire was rock hard and burnt . The gravy was tasty though! The whole meal was Luke warm and the plates were cold. We also saw another table with a family who complained and sent their roasts back twice.. they ended up leaving without eating the meal. Hence why we didn’t say anything at the time as we thought it obviously hasn’t made much difference sending it back to the kitchen. Will not be returning.

Myself and fiance had a meal here one afternoon, as we were staying just 10 mins away in the flowery dell lodges. The staff were very welcoming. We sat in the bar area next to the fire, we decided to have starters. I had soup ( very tasty tomato) and fiance had chicken starter.. well it was very filling!! Then we both had a vegetarian meal.. we were told it would be a bit wait by the owner as they were short staff, of which we was in no hurry and was very happy to sit n chill with our drinks. The pub is a very relaxing place , it was great to see few locals coming in for drinks and sitting chatting to one another, we could stayed all day!!.. we would definitely visit this place again if we return to the area.

Disappointed with our visit since its changed hands. Menu's that we're placed on the table looked like they spent the previous evening on the bar floor. This didn't give us any confidence from the start. Barmaid looked like she had just fallen out of bed. Food was below average. At the end of the day if they are prepared to give out soiled paper menus what's the rest of the establishment like? Wouldn't return in a hurry I'm afraid if at all.

All food was exceptional and the lasses loved the lasagna and said it was the best they had ever had and they are experts on thier lasagna s. Beef was tender. Drinks lush and the waiter/waitress friendly and happy. 10 out of 10. Will 💯 percent recommend

We decided to try this pub as we have always driven passed whilst staying in the area, we booked a table for Saturday night. We were shown to our table and drinks were ordered. We ordered our meal about 15 minutes later although the place was completely empty, the server said she would be back. We ordered the meal and this was served around 20 minutes later. The steak that we ordered was average but the meal was ok apart from a large amount of fat on the meat. Unfortunately at no point during the meal did we get asked if our food was ok, or if we wanted another drink and both glasses were empty. But that didn’t stop us asking about the Sunday lunch when paying the bill, the waitress told us that they do get booked up but it was fairly empty for the following day. My husband said we would call in a bit (he really wanted check if I was happy with the place as it was my birthday the following day), we decided that this was worth a second chance and called about 30 minutes after we left, he was told that the restaurant was booked solid until Wednesday, we found this very difficult to believe after what we had been told so I called around 1 hour later to be told the same thing. On the Sunday, my husband called again and low and behold they could fit us in! We arrive and the place was empty, the meal we had was beef dinner and pork dinner, the meat is like a boil in the bag meat, mash potatoes are bland and the Yorkshire puddings burnt and tasteless, the place remained empty right up until we left an hour later, so either they had a mass cancellation or their staff say they are fully booked when they aren’t.The place itself is a little mis matched with no atmosphere, less than average food and not great service. Not a place I would return to a third time.

Visited here with a friend that recommended the Holly Hill. Must admit the portion sizes are large and good value. Very good Fish & Chips with nice crispy batter and fresh chips. My partner had the Pie which was also very tasty and the meat was very tender and fresh vegetables.

There were only two of us and we were placed on a table tucked behind the front door. I was facing out, which wasn't too bad, but my poor niece was facing me and the wall and completely cut off from the rest of the room. Shame as the food and service was fine, but I wouldn't return as a party of two for that reason - a lot of money to be staring at a wall, while the lively atmosphere of this busy restaurant is all behind you. We had the afternoon tea, which was satisfactory.

My wife and I had a meal here last week. I have to say that it exceeded all expectations. The food was just right and the service was fantastic. I couldn't fault it in any way. I had a fillet steak which was one of the most tender ever. I even spoke to the manager at the end just to say how much we enjoyed our experience. It is a pity that this restaurant is so far from home.

Noticing this place has recently changed hands and as Richmond locals of nearly 30 years, whilst walking past I decided to pop in with a friend. The interior looked like well presented so we thought we could pop in for for a drink at the bar which was surprisingly empty for the time of night and decide to perhaps eat after that.We spoke to the matradee on entering only to be told she would "see what she could do"and that if we could have a drink at the bar based on 'conditions' only if we were "quiet about it" having never encountered this level of condescension and pre emptive judgement in my life, my friend and I were utterly bewildered. We thanked her for in jest allowing us to spend our own money in such a place but due to her vacuous nature this joke went straight over her head and she seemed genuinely surprised when we turned down the condition based opportunity she thought she was kindly allowing us to have.Maybe they think by copying a famous London venue's name they are somehow instantly reputable but I'm afraid such arrogance should not be rewarded.

The location is simply fabulous. At the top of Swaledale with views all around. Set up for walkers - so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Mixing with fellow walkers meant a very sociable stay. Room was good size and comfortable. Restaurant bar and lounge were of high quality and brought a high enjoyable stay. Matt and Dave are great hosts. Thoroughly recommended.

No beer on draught, no food available. The only drink on tap was from yorkshire water. Don't know how the landlord makes a living, rumour is he has funds hidden in a barrel of Wensleydale Gold.

We visited 20th October 2024 for a meal for our sons birthday. We always go for special occassions however the meals were not as good as normal . Myself and daughter In law chose the bottomless Chinese my Husband and son chose trio parmos and my other son chose the Barney rubble mixed grill . Our table was booked for 6.30 we sat for 20 minutes and I had to ask Bar staff if we were to place our order at the bar to which she said I will come to your table . Long story short we waited and waited when the food finally arrived the trio parmos were extreamly dry and very hard unedible really . Very dissapointing experence .
