Once found, there was plenty of parking and the welcome was warm. On deciding to eat in the pub, the food was very hit and miss. Burger was fine, fish was way overcooked (as were the vegetables, in the microwave). There's a big sign outside advertising Theakstons' beer - but it is not available - that's not acceptable! Upon checking out after a single night's stay for two, as had been booked, I was presented with an inordinate bill, for 3 nights' stay. When I remonstrated, as the check-out date was two days hence on the 'system' , there was a lot of telephone conversation with 'someone', but I produced a copy of the booking with the cost shown and that is what I eventually did pay. The pub would benefit from a decent chef, a properly recorded booking and ordering system and beer, as advertised.

We stopped off for an early evening meal. My wife had a cup of tea and steak pie. The milk in her tea had slightly turned and the steak was very very salty. Quite basic pub food but good value. Not very busy considering the time of day which surprised us but was a blessing as we were very hungry so no delays encountered. We were slightly disappointed when we explained about the issue of the milk and the saltiness of the meat (my wife had to leave half as it was just too salty) the hosts seemed remarkably I bothered about the feedback. Not sure we would return based on the lack of concern over our experience it's a shame because it could have easily been a better experience had they showed more interest in our feedback. We weren't complaining as such, more pointing out issues so they knew for the sake of their own business.

Conveniently located a short walk out of Richmond town centre with a large car park and attached pub and dining area. My stay was far from 'luxurious' though. My room was adequate - though there were chips out of the ensuite shower tray and the small drain was nearly blocked meaning the water backed up several centimetres and so close to the edge of the rim I had to stop and let it drain. There was a mini-fridge (6 cans of pop / 'pint of milk' max) and an extra heater (needed as outside wall room and 6C outside, no central heating on). The bed was comfortable with 4 pillows. I was given a key for the side door for accessing the accommodation; the key jammed in the lock. The server/manager made it work for them. My suggestion to apply 'WD-40' was met with a smile, if silence. The food....was late and cold. 5 guests ordered English breakfasts on the Sunday morning and the first took 30 minutes to appear; mine nearly 40 minutes. Apparently they had a failed freezer. My meal was barely warm; other guests commented on the same about the coffee (true). I returned for lunch and was 'squeezed in' without booking into an empty dinning area at ~12:30. I ordered at the counter as nobody bothered to come and take my order beyond my drink; I could hear a lot of chatting in the kitchen through the partition wall. My meal (Roast Beef Dinner) was lukewarm, and arrived in 15 minutes. No staff at any time asked me how my food was or my accommodation experience - even during paying. When I asked the lunch server if they did temperature checks on their food I was told literally: "Yes, we do." .....silence. I indicated that the food was cold. ....silence....*blink* I indicated that I assess health care facilities - I have two hospital wards this week.....silence. As I had paid already, I walked out, leaving no tip. Shucks-to-you-too.

We used this pub regularly in the past and food was always excellent. How disappointing on our return! Our friends ordered fish and chips, a short while later the waiter returned to our table (we were the only ones eating in the bar as we had dogs with us) and told us they had ran out of fish. So they chose the ham, egg and chips and the steak casserole. Well what we got was varying between ok and inedible! The ham was chunks of fatty meat which looked like raw gammon, some of it I was unable to cut with the knife. The chips on all our meals were half black and burnt and half golden. My husband had the hunters chicken and apart from the chips he was quite happy with his meal. The steak casserole was so overdone it was tough and crispy. Needless to say the dogs had a good feed with the bits we couldn’t eat. Dessert was no better as we ordered sticky toffee pudding. It tasted like no sticky toffee pudding I’ve ever had - and not in a good way! They were small round sponges which had been microwaved as the top was crisp and the rest was very hot. It tasted more like a syrup sponge and would suggest it wasn’t made on the premises. So all in all I’m giving a two star review as the waiter was friendly and welcoming but we won’t return in a hurry!

The location is good, the pub is pleasant enough, but the food was disappointing. My husband’s chips were inedible and my ham and eggs were not good, it was described on the menu as hand carved ham, it was more like under cooked gammon steak. The meals were not expensive, but we did not enjoy them. I don’t think that we will return. On the plus side the pub is open on Mondays, when many places are closed and there is a good car park

Just outside Richmond town Centre but very close, just up a hill across the river. The adjoining pub had some nice views of the castle and area. The staff were very friendly and accommodated us on an early breakfast. The room was comfortable for us and the two kids. Wasn’t noisy despite being connected to the pub on a Saturday night. Would definitely recommend this place again if we were staying in/near Richmond.

Lovely atmosphere outdoors, beautiful scenery, relaxing and quaint style, servers were friendly, helpful and warm, and food was delicious. The broad variety on the menu was great and I recommend the crispy, scrumptious chicken goujons and also the divine loaded potato skins. Loved the lemonade - very flavourful and fizzy! A next step would be having better seating options outside as I found the picnic bench stiff and not very comfy, so perhaps cushions or couches could be used (just a suggestion). Attentive staff always helps and the eatery was easily accessible which is good. Overall a lovely experience.

Was in the area today so me and my daughter decided to have a nice meal as a treat we don’t often get a chance to go out together and it looked idyllic. When we went in the lass was so welcoming and friendly we got our drinks straightaway and knew what we wanted ordered as soon as our drinks came out. We were the only people in the restaurant. After about 1/2 hour the lady came out said sorry for the delay they had no burger buns the supplier didn’t leave any and one of the staff members had gone out the get some. Surely the kitchen would check the ingredients before making the meal? I don’t understand why they didn’t say at the beginning they didn’t have blah blah blah and my daughter could have had an alternative. Anyway about 15 mins later could hear people talking in the bar area like EVERY word as the bar runs through the bar and the restaurant and heard a girl say the garage didn’t have any buns I had to go to Lidl. We were still waiting and at this point I went to the bar to say cancel the food however it was being brought out. My lasagna looked homemade however cutting into it and having a mouthful was completely dry it tasted like a dry beef burger but there was hardly any sauce in it. I’m presuming it had been left on the hot plate for too long. My daughters burger on initial inspection looked like one you get from the fair in the bread bun - only difference is the price as in you pay £3 for a cheeseburger that looks like that as opposed to £14. On opening the bun the burgers looked like a couple of Birds Eye frozen ones she took a bite out of it and didn’t eat it. The price of the burger was taken off the bill which they did as a goodwill gesture we don’t ask for that, however though they offered a replacement lasagne which is fair enough I said no thanks as I had been put off it. So I still got charged for that. I was more annoyed that I still ended up paying £18 and that money could have been spent elsewhere on a meal so I was out of pocket paying for something I didn’t eat and didn’t have enough money to go to another place to get something for us both to eat as we were hungry. I had been annoyed hearing the staff talk about us and the attitude of one of the staff, a young girl was terrible. I told her we could hear what was being said other side of bar and repeated it back to her she looked very sheepish and apologised. It’s a little gem of a place in a lovely location and fabulous views too. A lovely place to sit and have a pint. Unfortunately on this instance I wouldn’t be recommending the food, of course it may have been a one off and the staff were having a bad day but treating customers like they’re idiots isn’t acceptable. No manager about when I asked to speak to them. I can’t complain about the drinks or the initial service we received going in there, reading reviews many people have had a much better experience in there than we did. Just a shame I can’t leave a better review.

Went to their website from Google maps. No way to check availability (and pricing only says "from" £55) so called and booked. That was easy and service was pleasant, but realised later it did seem to be available on other sites with different pricing (I think without breakfast perhaps). After booking we had to arrange an early appointment which meant we wouldn't be able to get breakfast anyway. When we arrived service was very friendly and welcoming. They offered to do an early breakfast. Even though we said we didn't want to inconvenience anyone, they insisted it was no problem. Sadly that didn't happen as in the morning all the doors to the pub/dining area were locked and we couldn't find/raise anyone. We left a message on the number for out of hours in the room, but never got a reply. Room was comfortable enough. Included a fridge with milk. Shower drain was blocked, otherwise fine for a night. Lovely view of Richmond and the castle from the garden and partially from the room. Didn't fancy the food on offer that night so can't comment on that.

Walked in on a Thursday evening at around 6 pm to get table for 5 for food. ( 2 adults / 3 kids). There were 3 staff behind the bar….took a good few minutes for someone to come over to us…. Apparently they were too busy for us….and it would be about an hour before they could get us a table for food. I couldn’t see round the corner into the restaurant area but it looked and sounded VERY quiet! The carpark was quiet.🤔 I’ve not experienced such apathy and lack of interest in our custom in quite a while….seemed like the staff didn’t want to be busy! We drove past a couple of hours later having spent c£100 elsewhere on food!

After a tour overseas we returned to Caterick in June 89 and we would ride our bike to Holly Hill inn for the Old Perculier - it was the best in the country back then. So this was a nostalgic return to a happy place. Owner let us camper van it in their car park. We awoke early to use the loos by the waterfall. No Theakstons but the ale was exquisite. Called for Sunday roast this lunchtime at this clean and tidy refurbished establishment. There is nothing much original about the interior unfortunately but no doubt functional. The large dining room where we were seated would have benefitted from the log burner being lit, not only for the ambience, but it was on the cool side. A roast beef and a pork dinner was ordered with an extra side of cauliflower cheese and pigs in blankets. Pork was ok, beef was tough, as mentioned to the staff, carrots and peas needed work, mash, roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, cauliflower cheese and the gravy were decent.

But after getting drink. It took a while for our order to be taken. Then 20 minutes later. They came back to tell us there was not steak pie left. So had to order something else. From entering to getting our food took over a hour for us to get our food. Which with a basic menu you would think it would be all fresh and piping hot. The chilli was cold in the middle and dry. Which says microwave. The children’s lasagna had been microwaved way too long and clingfilm stuck all over the bottom of the dish. Overall the service was slow. The food is well over priced. And for basic food extremely poor.

Had pork with real crackling and plenty of it, only downside was the gravy was already poured on making our delicious homemade yorkies soggy, fresh vegetables. The WORST Sunday lunch we have ever experienced. Met here with family as a half way point as we had ate here many years before and really enjoyed it. Starters- chicken pate came with fruit on top but all of this fruit was frozen so couldn’t be eaten. Brie wedges were fine but weren’t heated enough to be melted on the inside. Main- Mash potato had hard cold lumps ?frozen so we sent all plates back and we were told the chef was replacing our meals- this was not the case. The meals were returned obviously re heated and not replaced, the meat still had our sauces on and Yorkshire puddings either cut open or missing. Mash potato was still inedible. The beef extremely tough and chicken leg still pink. The chef then did come and apologise for the mash potato and quality of the Yorkshire puddings ( still raw inside) and said they were using new ovens and the potatoes weren’t great due to time of year- due to this they would take the mash off the menu and give new potatoes only for the rest of Sunday service. We then misheard as we believed they said they would be taking the main meals off the bill which we though was reasonable however they only took one meal off. We didn’t understand this as two of the meals were 3/4 uneaten ( veg only) and the other two only 1/2 eaten. Staff did offer for us to wait and discuss this with the chef when he wasn’t busy however we didn’t wish to wait longer as had a long distance to travel home. Such a shame and completely ruined our family get together the only way we could describe the vast majority of the food was disgusting.

Stayed for 2 nights at the Holly Hill Inn. Check in was quick and efficient. The rooms were very clean and plenty of storage space. Lovely basket of toiletries in the bathroom everything you could think of. Bed enormous and comfy. Tea and coffee facilities in your room, even a mini fridge with a little bottle of fresh milk in it. Shower piping hot. Fantastic views from the bedroom window looking over to Richmond. Spent the first night in the pub and had evening meal which was delicious. Too much but very tasty. Very relaxed atmosphere, staff at the pub very friendly. They phoned a taxi for us to get into Richmond as it is about a mile away. Would have walked into Richmond if wasn’t for the enormous hill and is in a rural area. Breakfast was lovely. Various juices, fruit and cereals on offer. A full English breakfast just enough to fill you on a rainy day. Second day went into Richmond. It is a lovely town with some really quaint shops and cafes. We came back to freshen up to have an evening meal in Richmond. This is where the but comes in! We got back around 9.40 pm to have some drinks in the bar and we found it in darkness. My husband knocked on the front door asking if we could come in and have a drink. Landlord ( I think) said “ no” as they had closed the pub and shut the door in his face. We tried to order a taxi back into Richmond ( got the number from the card in the room) but they were busy so we had no option to go to bed. What got us is the landlord was stood at the bar with a full pint on the bar! So why couldn’t he just let us have a few drinks. We were residents staying at his pub and we would have spent a decent amount of money for drinks. We had breakfast the last morning. The landlord did apologise about the pub being closed. He said after 8 pm they hadn’t had any people coming in and to save money decided to close. He asked our friends what breakfast they would like. My friend said poached egg on toast and just asked if she could have butter this time (as she didn’t have it the first morning but didn’t say anything). The landlord was a bit funny and replied something like ‘You don’t have to be like that!’ and went outside. We really didn’t know what he meant by this. We checked out and paid for our meals that we had on the first night. Overall Holly Hill Inn is a lovely place to stay. Location is fabulous. The bar staff are really friendly and helpful. I would have given the pub 5 stars but felt the hospitality had lapsed by the end of our stay.

A mixed stay - and if I'm honest, you could do better in Richmond. So on the plus side.... the rooms, including the bathroom were well sized, mine had a lovely view over Richmond, they were spotless and a great selection of toiletries in the en suite. We had dinner in the pub and the young guy serving us was lovely - helpful, friendly and couldn't do enough. The food was decent pub grub and my pie was delicious. However, the showers are terrible and don't work properly. I had a shower before dinner, it was barely a dribble and was too hot to shower in. It eventually re-set itself, so I figured it was a one-off. I grabbed a shower before breakfast and again, barely a dribble. And then stopped working again. Having to rinse shower gel off with a mug filled from the tap isn't what I pay over £80 a room for..... I complained to the lady on reception, whose response was that the rooms were great value so I had no cause for complaint. And in the same breath then told me that they'd had problems with the showers and they knew the bedrooms needed work. The other couple who were staying heard me complain and said they'd had exactly the same issue. Bizarrely I then got an email later in the day attaching a video to prove that my shower was working fine, so clearly I've completely imagined having to rinse myself clean with a mug! 😆 probably the worst customer service I've ever had from a hotel of any size - jaw dropping! So, please please please save your money and go choose one of the many other B&Bs in Richmond which have en suites that work and decent customer service who don't accuse their guests of lying!

We stayed for a night and had a very enjoyable stay. Great pub, nice breakfast, the room was large and spotlessly clean. The staff were all extremely welcoming and provided great service. Highly recommended and would definitely stay again.

Really disappointing Sunday lunch. For the main - the veg were both undercooked but also really dried out, the mash potato was really claggy, the gravy tasted like Bisto with added salt and the meat portion really small. For the pudding - the raspberry pavlova...

Been using this pub as a stop off from north to south for many years. Used to live in catterick. Won’t be bothering again. 1:30 on a bank holiday, two tables taken but wouldn’t even do us a sandwich. Extremely poor effort guys.

Excellent place. Clearly this last year has new management as this was a very good experience for 10 of us for lunch en route to our long weekend in Leyburn. Cosy log fire. Welcoming hand pulled cask (theakstons) pulled properly. Food excellent so to the service. Kerb side from road hides a super set up from the back and inside.
