The venue is excellent, but the overall experience fell short of our expectations. The waitress was average, nothing special, and could have provided more information about the menu and other items. The cocktails were good, but the food was a letdown. I ordered the roast, and the chicken was dry and overcooked. The potatoes were instead of being roasted were deep-fried, likely cooked with the chips. My wife’s fish was cooked well, but it was very thin and lacked the freshness we expect from a fish dish. The prices are reasonable, but the food is just average pub fare served in an excellent environment. The food really needs to be improved, as going to an Ivy restaurant should be a better experience than eating at a typical pub.

We visited The Ivy, Exeter, for a Cream Tea, kindly given to us as a voucher. We have visited this Ivy before and was always quite impressed . Very disappointed this time. Just scones, no other items. The scones were small and dry with a tiny portion of cream and jam. The tea was good. We have had Cream Teas in many different venues including Fortnum and Masons, The Dorchester, The Athanaeum, Claridges and The Savoy, together with many National Trust Cafes - this was definitely the worst we have experienced! So disappointing when we had previously been big fans. I can only think as it was purchased with a voucher that we definitely had the "economy version"!

Went to The Ivy for lunch with my sister. Greeted well. Showed to our table drinks and meal order taken fine by friendly staff. Ordered a fritter which was so greasy we couldn’t eat it. Table cleared but not cleaned…..drips of food and cocktail sticks left on the table. Main was fine/avarage. As we were walking out the girl on the reception was on her phone and barely managed to say goodbye. All in all it was an ok visit. Staff training needed.

£200 is excessive for a lunch. These are top London prices for very mediocre fare. Probably the worst steak I have ever been served in 60 years. Tough, grey, unappetising. Staff, as always, pleasant but untrained resulting in a poor experience. Never again. Desert was best part of meal. Starter very greasy (zucchini).

Visited today for a birthday tea - have been before and loved it however today I was embarrassed that I had recommended this. 1. No vegetarian options for afternoon tea - never experienced this in London, high end Devon and Cornwall or USA. My poor veggie friend was asked ‘do you just want all cucumber’ other places at least manage a cheese or egg option 2. Tea did not arrive with the food - around 25 mins in fact so whilst eating we were thirsty 3. Cramped tables to the extent that we conversed with both sides of our table 4. Unbalanced - 3 small sandwiches per head with far too much sweet stuff, we just couldn’t face anymore especially with no tea to wash it down 5.Hard to catch the waitress’ eye even to pay the bill then service charge- I’m generally a good cash tipper but £17.50 for 3 afternoon tea stands and slow delivery of 3 pots of tea seemed excessive 6. No enforcement of a dress code, many people clearly dressed to enjoy a high end lunch or tea but people also in hoodies and jeans Other far nicer places in Devon for a special occasion, this has just turned to chain hype. I see most dinner reviews are positive- maybe it’s all a bit much with shoppers and daytime custom.

We picked The Ivy for part of a friends Hen Party, thinking it was somewhere special to celebrate. It was very poor. A large hair was found in the bride to be’s starter, which actually made her physically sick, 3 of us had to wait nearly 10 mins for our vegetables to accompany our main course, which by then had gone cold. We had to wait 45 minutes before our drinks turned up! Finally in the second round of drinks that equally took 45 minutes to prepare, the bride had a dead fly floating in her drink. By now we were so unimpressed we asked for the bill and left, we didn’t bother with deserts!! They didn’t charge for the starter and replaced the fly infested gin and tonic. We expressed our dissatisfaction to the staff and said it simply wasn’t good enough, especially as they knew we were on a hen weekend. There were 6 of us in the party. Just as we were going the Manager asked a member of staff to give us a free glass of champagne, which we didn’t drink and gave to other diners. Too little, too late. There are lots of other lovely restaurants within Exeter, which has far better service and not as highly priced. I shall not come back!!

I have been reluctant to give this review as it is a while since we ate here but friends we have spoken to about our experience have persuaded me otherwise. During a stopover on the way home from Cornwall, we booked an evening meal at The Ivy Exeter after recommendation from friends for quality and consistency. After ordering a bottle of Veuve Cliquot, we decided to order the double cheese soufflé but without the pine nuts as described on the menu, having been assured they would not be on the plate, my friend having a nut allergy. This to be followed by sea bream for me and shepherd’s pie for Jane. After about a 10 minute wait the champagne arrived and a glass poured for each of us, then the waiter took the bottle away as the table was too small to take it. After a further wait the soufflés arrived and seemed very nice but within 5 minutes Jane started to feel very Ill so went to the bathroom. In the meantime the 2nd course arrived Jane returned to the table, took a sip of champagne but had to leave for the bathroom again not touching her meal. After a further wait of about 10 minutes I asked a passing waiter to top our glasses up ( 2nd glass) and after about 5 minutes he returned with 2 fresh glasses and told me that our bottle had been “thrown away” and would we accept a complementary glass in recompense, as Jane was now feeling desperate to get away I asked for the bill so we could get back to our hotel and get medical care if necessary. On our return, I emailed The Ivy and related our experience and problems and was assured an investigation would take place and I would be informed of the outcome. I am still waiting.

We very rarely get an evening out due to little ones and wanted to go somewhere special. Sadly this wasn't it and we wished we had gone somewhere else. The service was appalling despite there being many members of staff on. The food was very average and very overpriced. I usually love desserts over starters and had been looking forward to trying one but by the time we got to dessert we just wanted to leave and did not want to give the company any more of our hard earned money. We won't be back and we won't be recommending you. Many other wonderful restaurants in Exeter, I have no idea why this place is often fully booked over a week or two in advance.

Lovely waitress called Chloe - very attentive, knowledgeable, friendly. Choices from their Graduation menu or the main menu and we were able to pick from either ( 4 of us) Food was well presented and very tasty- wine glasses were topped up when required- sadly no room for dessert !! Inside decor typical of the Ivy chain - nicely set out tables ( personally I would not choose to sit outside ) and room to move without disturbing other diners. Great experience all round ⭐️

I had such a special evening here for Mother’s Day. I came with my mum, boyfriend and his mum. We were greeted warmly by staff on arrival and made to feel very welcome by all. A gentleman who I think may have been Portuguese? I didn’t catch his name but he was such a delight and made us all laugh. The staff also said I looked like Cameron Diaz which was a very nice compliment (I don’t see it but I’ll definitely take it😍). The food was wonderful, especially the cheese soufflé starter. The cocktails were also of a very high quality. We will definitely be returning soon, thank you The Ivy for giving us a lovely Mother’s Day dinner.

Visited for a friend’s 30th birthday, in great anticipation since we had all wanted to visit the Ivy Exeter since it opened, some time ago now. Two of our party had been to the Ivy Asia, St Paul’s London and expected wonderful things including service, food, drinks and a great setting. We got a wonderful setting, first impressions were just as spectacular as expected. Sadly, our drinks order was slow to take place and then the drinks were slow to arrive. Service was below average with waitresses piling plates on the table in front of us (fine if you’re at your local spoons but not what you expect from the Ivy) as well as then dropping a knife on me! We asked for more tap water at least twice and this was ignored. My friend accidentally ordered the wrong ice tea, we asked if it could be changed and it arrived as the wrong ice tea. We ordered G&Ts, the waitress arrived and asked “who ordered the tonic waters”. The food was good, but not particularly overwhelming as you’d expect from the Ivy. And a final note, why have a dress code but allow people to dine who have blatantly ignored this and worn a hoodie… A service charge added, no, sorry. When asked why we listed the above. Not the expected standard for the Ivy.

My first visit to The Ivy in Exeter. I did really like the decor and the space, it feels nice. What I found problematic were the following: 1. We were asked if we had any allergies pretty much the minute we were greeted at the door - not a great way to start, and then again 2 minutes later by our table server. I know restaurants have to be super careful in this area, but there are ways of doing it without repetition or causing irritation. 2. The dim but pretty lighting makes it all but impossible to read the menus without the aid of a phone torch. 3. Service was slightly annoying, being asked the same questions by different servers and then at the end, not being able to attract attention to get our bill. 4. My meal was average and overpriced for what it was: Ivy burger and chips. 5. I ordered a bottle of local beer which came with a nicely chilled glass tankard which was too heavy to pick up & hold comfortably so I asked for it to be replaced with a lighter tumbler and it was. 6. The range of desserts on the a la carte menu are all overpriced by £2-£3 so we decided not to order one. 7. A 12.5% service charge is added to the bill. We paid it but reluctantly - I didn't think the service was really good enough to warrant that amount and I really don't like being asked how my meal is about 3 minutes after I've started eating it or at any time during the course of it - an irritating habit adopted by most restaurants these days, as it interrupts conversation. A better time to ask would be when the server comes to take the plates. If you're paying quite a lot for something, it should be excellent in every respect. Sadly The Ivy isn't so I won't be recommending it or returning at any point.

Step back in time to a very smart, sophisticated restaurant and service. My wife and I were given a gift card for lunch at The Ivy by our son and daughter-in-law. We opted for the Ivy Classics [2 courses for £19.17]. I had mushroom soup and the thinly grilled steak [£4.95 extra] with mushroom sauce and my wife had the duck liver pate and sea bream. All were excellent but the bream was swimming [excuse the pun!] in oil. My wife has an intolerance to too much oil! We did not complain at the time but she wishes she had because her stomach was very unsettled for the rest of the day. The ambiance is calm and collected, the service superb and the food is exquisite.

After a really poor meal at the Ivy Covent Garden we came to the Ivy in Exeter and what a difference everything was spot on food, decor, staff friendliness, Exeter and Cardiff could teach Covent Garden a thing or two, I highly recommend eating here.

Absolutely heaving when we went during the Christmas market. You know what you're going to get, not fine dining, but at the price, with free coffee refills you can't beat it. Nice surroundings in an old chapel.
